  1. Gave the drivers a test run last night. They are working pretty solid with a decent framerate. Seems a bit more stable though as well.

    Doesn't the forceware drivers support higher resolutions than 1024x768 under Win9x :blink:

    Of course but it's hard to set a higher resolution than what your monitor internally reports even though the monitor can support higher. The driver itself hard-caps the max resolution to what the montor itself reports.

    IE:My monitor internally reports a max of 1024x768 but can actually display up to 1152x864 and as such the driver limiting the max to 1024x768 and so not allowing you to set a custom resolution any higher. It was able to keep it set to 1152x768 using the older detonator drivers as long as I booted the system with the monitor off. However, now you can still do it but the driver resets the cap back to whatever the monitor internally reports after exiting out of a full-screen app using OGL or DX.

    It would be interesting if you can run nvidia's 7-series cards with this driver.

    I would be interested in finding out about this myself as well actually. If they do work on the higher-series cards then NVidia will end up getting a little more funding from my pocket as I would be upgrading the card at that point.. ^.^

  2. This is quite interesting considering the last offical reliease was indeed 81.98! I'll give these a try and see how they go. Hoping these drivers can be tricked like the (really) old ones to unlock higher resolutions despite my monitor internally giving a max of 1024x768 (really supports a max of 1152x864).

    EDIT:

    From what it seems, I can't "trick" these either into using 1152x864. Can only do so by booting w/ monitor off but gets capped again at 1024x768 once I open a full-screen app that changes screen resolution. Additionally attempting to use the NVidia control panel under the advanced tab fails with an exception:

    RUNDLL32 caused an exception c0000006H in module KERNEL32.DLL at 01cf:bff85742.

    All-in-all though they seem to be working and the nvidia configuration icon in the system tray works +has extra options. I prefer to configure my card using riva-tuner v2.0[Final] anyway so I just removed it. :)

    edit2: Aside from the widescreen-support I cannot quite find ANY reference to this driver version on the net. Perhaps it was a once silently-leaked beta version?

  3. Seems there is a bit of nashville in all of us as the whole OS was basically merged into win98 and IE4. What I find from reading that and the other projects is that microsoft has nowdays basically touted 'new technology' despite that it's existed for god knows how long under their sleeve. Such as from this snippet regarding project CAIRO:

    The Windows 95 user interface was based on the initial design work that was done on the Cairo user interface.[4] DCE/RPC shipped in Windows NT 3.1. X.500 shipped as part of Active Directory in Windows 2000. X.400 messaging shipped as part of Microsoft Exchange Server. Content Indexing is now a part of Internet Information Server and Windows Desktop Search.[1]

    The remaining component is the object file system, now called WinFS. It was originally planned as part of Windows Vista but development was cancelled in June 2006, with some of its technologies to be merged into other Microsoft products such as the next versions of Microsoft SQL Server codenamed "Katmai" and Windows codenamed "Vienna" under the Windows "7" Project.[5]

    Many of those features ended up in the NT line, however they were already integrated into the 9x line at once point during the project. Additionally , they had slated WInFS as being the next 'big thing' in vista despite the tech existed for 15-16 years.

    random note: On the flip-side, I do have build 5111 of Neptune sitting around. It's actually not that bad of an OS but still basically win2k at the very heart. Especially considering it's even labeled so in the system properties.

  4. Have you tried rolling back the registry as well before the time you tested that card? You can do so by going into the boot menu and hitting 'command prompt' then typing 'scanreg' to have it check and offer to view/restore an older backup.

    What it sounds like is that you may have cleaned up the drivers but there are some rogue registry entries still active that may also be shared by your other card, thus having changed that cards settings as well.

  5. Alrighty - I've figured out the true culprit for the issue :)

    Seems running both the client & server on the same PC causes a form of CPU/Process fighting regardless how little CPU the server/client uses. Issue is resolved through setting the server's process priority higher than normal such as high or realtime.

  6. Belkin Wireless G USB adapter (F5D7050): Says it works in 98SE, Belkin is a good company, right? It goes for $40.

    From my personal experience, DO NOT get that belkin adaptor. It works in win98se and can be configured for use without the bundled client (after addding the needed config fields through the registry). HOWEVER, this adaptor will fail to function after roughly 24 hours or so and thus require you to unplug then plug it back in each and everytime.

    When it fails you will only know when you suddenly lose all ability to ping outside of the adaptor (lose network connectivity). Also to note, that belkin after being plugged in for a time gets exteremely warm (might have stopped functioning due to overheating). Taking off the casing (which comes off very easily) didn't really solve the issue at all.

    This caused me to shelf the belkin I have in favor of an older Linksys B Adaptor that isn't a thumbdrive-type. Rather an adaptor connected through a usb cable which has been rock-solid stable for 24/7 use for months at a time. Since then I've lost my faith in belkin adators - used their brand cables for years but thier products in the usb adaptor line has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

  7. If that was the case I would have the same issue connecting to my dedicated server using my laptop or any other pc, however there is no issue of that even with players connecting from the outside (which I'd tested using my neighbors pc). It only happens when connecting to myself through localhost on the same PC regardless if there is anyone on it or not (though of course I only get it connecting to myself locally).

    The pc is more than powerful enough , it's just an issue connecting to myself with a client on the same PC as that running the server.

    edit in: For the heck of it - I monitored my ping to myself over localhost. Not moving and letting 20+ bots 'have fun' I end up with a ping around 34ms, no problem. Once I start moving (uploading positional/activity data) my ping (to localhost) rises up to around 230ms and above. -.-'

    edit #2:

    Well, it seems my issue with the unreal2k3 dedicated is fixed. completely scrapped the whole config file and had it autocreat a new one. Somehow that completely fixed the localhost issue (strangely enough).

    However, it seemingly doesn't fix the issue with teamspeak and such. Might be down to the software itself than just win98.

    Apologies for anyone who could have been alarmed of a possible bug/issue by this. Just been trying to figure out what was wrong for the last 3 days and was getting rather tired/fed-up with the whole situation. :(

  8. *************ISSUE RESOLVED*************

    Seems running both the client & server on the same PC causes a form of CPU/Process fighting regardless how little CPU the server/client uses. Issue is resolved through setting the server's process priority higher than normal such as high or realtime.

    *****************************************

    I had hit this brick in the road once before in the past and thought nothing of it - however, it now hits me again.

    Situation:

    Lets say I'm hosting a teamspeak server on my PC.

    Now lets say I wanted to connect to the server using either 127.0.0.1/localhost/(insert IP here)

    It will connect fine.

    ... here is the brick in the way:

    I connect fine but there is severe upload latency when connecting to it. I can hear all the speech received fine , no issue whatsoever - untill it comes to speaking myself. Then poeple complain either I'm breaking up significantly or because of my connecting everything in general is breaking up.

    Second instance of it happening:

    I've been getting into playing Unreal Tournament 2003 lately and seeing as there were no invasion servers up - I decide to host my own. Now rather than have to be there 24/7 I would host it dedicated and connect/join when I felt like it.

    Now when I connect to it through localhost everything I receive is smooth and clear. No 'game lag'/'graphic lag' or anything (running full framerate & no oddities). Even with no players and just some bots. Everything is smooth untill I actually try to move. Then I keep 'warping back' as if the server isn't really getting any of my data sent to it (mind you this is localhost showing significant connection 'lag') or very little to none. I will move.. eventually, but it often just doesn't happen very well while updating my position or actions. Lo and behold though, when I take damage or watch others actions (or even use spectator mode to just watch) everything is fine as the client is mainly just receiving and not sending. Since I have only one main PC I've been stuck with not even putting up a dedicated because of this latency issue.

    .. also to note: the ingame latency for myself starts at about 34ms then scales to around 140ms (TO MYSELF!). When anyone connects they have no noticable 'lag' at all and plays fine for them. Also plays fine if I try to connect to it using my older laptop. Only happens when connecting to the server on the same PC through localhost or any local IP.

    So , anyone else experience this issue with heavy upload latency connecting to yourself? Also, anyone know of any way to fix this or am I pretty much stuck?

  9. This might be piling onto it but...

    10 GB web space, 200 GB monthly bandwidth, 3.95 $ per month)

    Oh look! it's even more good to be true! It now says:

    500 GB web space, 2000 GB monthly bandwidth, 3.95 $ per month)

    As for hosting however, why not host yourself and not worry about advertising?

  10. This whole issue is possibly (additionally?) due to microsoft not recognizing IE6 on win98se.

    It worked untill I installed IE6 due to needing net framework to try out a couple applications. Once I'd installed IE6, I get the 'thank you / mac' reply. However, once I'd opened a standalone copy of IE5 and then used windows update in that the links to get there worked fine.

  11. I have a soundblaster digital 5.1 but using the same drivers as those for an audigy/zs in win98. Has no issue and the drivers are WDM.

    I'll see if I can fish up the install pack for it on my main desktop as I can't find a link for it anywhere on google. I'm currently at work (on break) and away from my main PC. I would VNC it but not sure how much more time I have in this wireless net I'm conviniently sitting in.

    edit: Here is the link - found it! ( http://files.ngohq.com/ngo/ngocmd.exe - 22.8mb)

    Use the gamers set , not the music set due to the music set only having inf's for 2k/xp.

  12. The wildcard in Regular Expression (used in functions like preg_match or preg_replace) would be a simple 'period'.

    Lets say you're seraching inside 'My dog is a lazy dog';

    '.' = Matches any single character

    Would match 'M'

    '.*' = Matches everything till the very end (greedy)

    Would match 'My dog is a lazy dog' (since no other match at end was indicated).

    However...

    '.*g' Would match 'My dog is a lazy dog' Since 'g' is the very last end match.

    '.*?' = Matches till it hits the first match (lazy)

    Would match 'My dog is a lazy dog' (since no other match at end was indicated).

    However...

    '.*?g' Would match 'My dog' due to 'g' being the first match of 'g'

    To further note:

    following a wildcard/match query with '*' means infinite matches till the end

    following a wildcard/match query with '?' means match till the first matching text

    following a wildcard/match query with '+' means it must match one or more times

    If this wasn't very clear - the php manual has more info regarding regular expressions.

    As well as these other sites:

  13. Perhaps try forcing these older drivers [from '93 :( ] from OmegaDrive?

    http://www.omegadrivers.net/nvidia/win9x_me.php

    Been using them [forced using the driver for the GeForce4 Ti 4200 w/agp8x] on my geforce 4000mx without any problems. The Nvidia CPanel marks my card as 'unknown' but still overclocks and performs the same. Went to these drivers due to a nagging issue with the 81.xx drivers which involved an image tearing effect despite vsync being on when setting a game directly to full screen.

  14. This should do the trick as it's also the most compatible with browser settings. Do note that it requires the use of PHP.

    http://www.zend.com/zend/tut/authentication.php

    the following entry of interest from the url would be this...

    <?php

    if ((!isset( $PHP_AUTH_USER )) || (!isset($PHP_AUTH_PW))) {

    header( 'WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="Private"' );
    header( 'HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized' );
    echo 'Authorization Required.';
    exit;

    } else {

    echo "You entered $PHP_AUTH_USER for a username.<BR>";
    echo "You entered $PHP_AUTH_PW for a password.<BR>";

    }

    How you check for valid user/pass info is up to you. You have several ways to try it in the url posted.

    ... good luck :)

  15. I'd sent an email yesterday regarding such an issue and awaiting a reply.

    following was the sent email:

    Greetings,

    According to the blogs - there is a section (noted at the bottom) regarding the removal of windows 9x/dos/etc [freeware]utilities that are slated for possible removal after and during the migration. Would it be allowable for others to then host/serve those 'legacy' utilities on another site if/when you no longer provide the utilities on the sysinternals site? Granted, there may not be alot of downloads of them to consider keeping such 'legacy' utilities around but there are still a fair amount of users who consider such utilities useful. It would be great if one could aid in keeping these utilities around through the matter of mirroring them if it's not in breach of the licensing agreement.

    I appreciate and thank you for your time,

    [name removed] (Chozo4)

    --------------

    Downloads: We will be migrating most Sysinternals tools to Microsoft.Com Downloads which has additional bandwidth for a better end-user experience. At Mark’s direction, we are not going to be migrating 100% of the tools for one of the following reasons:

    1. It only worked on Win9x or DOS – the number of downloads didn’t justify the migration. These were eventually going to be removed from Sysinternals anyway.

    2. Not compatible with XP or Vista – or had compatibility issues with other 3rd party applications and were slated for removal pre-acquisition.

    --------------

  16. I se no 'warez' or anything of the such eiden. This thread is related to hanging onto and preventing useful win9x freeware/shareware utilities provided by sysinternals from being practically lost forever.

    There is no illegal distribution of software as it was all once freely available by the comany untill the day they permanently remove it.

  17. seemingly the XMSdsk method works only To a limited extent...

    Got ahold of a matching 256mb stick for a total of 4 sticks (2x512 2x256) w/ 1.5gb ram. Installed the extra 512 mb and set ramdisk accordingly. Windows will give the 'not enough memory to load windows' error without it and once in windows , win32 fails with 'out of memory' errors.

    Interestingly enough to note: after win32 fails I get a whole host of failures ranging from exceptions in 'vmcpd.vxd' to exceptions in 'vmm.vxd' followed shortly after by explorer causing endlessly looping page faults in kernel32.dll. Though the common problem of the 'display adaptor being misconfigured' always shows up as well for the party.

    Seems this system will only go as far as 3 sticks (1256mb -> 2x512+1x256+xmsdsk workaround) before 98 hits a brick wall. Was good in writing earlier but as said before by 'tscharlii' it may be good in theory but in practice is a different story... >_<

    I will do a bit more testing later with maxphyspage and the like. Just cannot have too much downtime at once on this system as it's also my file/web server.

  18. Please post your hardware configuration.

    He did - In the bottom of post #20 :) [duplicated below]

    edit:

    Hardware used:

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7N400-L capable of holding up to 3GB Ram, manual see http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherb...Name=GA-7N400-L

    CPU : AMD Athlon XP 2600+

    Ram Modules: 2x512MB DDR 400MHz CL 3, 2x256MB DDR 400MHz CL 3, running at 333Mhz, installed for Dual Channel operation according to the motherboard manual (double sided 512MB modules in Dimm Slots 1 & 2, single sided 256MB modules in Dimm Slots 3 & 4)

    Graphics : Ati Radeon 9600XT 128MB onBoard RAM with Bios Setting AGP Aperture Size: 128MB

    Harddisk : Seagate Barracude ST3200822A 3.01 200GB

    During POST the Bios recognizes 1.5GB Ram and enables Dual Channel Technology.

    A MemTest86 3.0 test reports no errors.

    My old debian installation, which resides on the harddisk behind the 137GB limit, recognizes 1.5GB ram, as well as the Knoppix 3.4 live cdrom does.

    As for myself - Windows doesn't even give a message when it failed with over 1gb ram. It just instantly reboots which is why I'd tried the ramdisk workaround and then shared my results. However, I ditched the extra ram shortly after due to wanting to wait untill I get a 4th matching stick so I wouldn't sacrifice dual-channel mode.

    My config would be found within my signature.

  19. I know what a swapfile is and how it works :)

    My point is that if a system is not swapping, because 1gig is huge for Win98, the ramdisk is not used. This ram is just sitting there. There is no real effective difference with capping the mem with maxphyspage. It's only usefull when you run a dualboot with a os that can handle 1gig better.

    My apologies for assuming so noguru. I had admittedly rushed out the post due to having just woken up and was due to leave for work within a few minutes.

    However, instead of using the maxphyspage setting I figured at least have the ram available for use if it does come to the case whereas it actually becomes needed. I myself have come to times when it has come rather close to reaching 1gb (50mb short of it) used during a typical game of diablo 2 (using a glide wrapper) or running some games such as quake 4 on ultra high.

  20. I have "just" 384 MB ram. I use the "conservative swapfile" setting and with this amount of ram my system barely uses the swapfile. Suppose I have >1gig, what extra performance gain will a fast swapfile on a ramdrive give me?

    The method I'd mentioned is for those who experience problems with running more than 1gb of ram. Whereas they'd normally have to set maxphsypage to cap the ram no higher than 1gb (thus making as if anything over never existed). Which would be a last resort if even vcache adjustments didn't help.

    A swap file in effect is just emulated ram once your ram runs out. Which is normally a file on your hard disk. Paging to a hard disk is only as fast as the disk itself (slow) whereas ram is much faster. Putting the swap file into a ram disk is the same as using the ram itself. So we basically use the ram above 1gb to turn that emulated ram into real ram again with such a workaround through the use of a ramdisk.
