  1. Someone suggested using a different shell to lower mem usage, unfortunately the suggested shell still has quite the memory footprint. An alternative is using blackbox (for windows: bb4win) as your shell, of which there exists a lightweight version: bblean. The version I used for a while is a mod of bblean called bbclean, which adds a couple of cool must-have features. Have a look at some screenshots if you're interested.
  2. Facts I've discovered (I own a Dell Inspiron 9300 with a Sigmatel sound chip): 1) It's not RyanVMs updatepack (I didn't use it and I still get the bsod) 2) It's not BTS (hey maat ) fault either, because I dont use his DriverPack (no offence). I did the following: Using the winnt.sif method I copied the drivers manually into $OEM$\$1\... Then I got the bluescreen portcls.sys error. I had only installed ONE sound driver: Realtek AC'97 3.75 (non-HD). That means it can't be ANYTHING else other than the Realtek drivers. They are just not meant to be slipstreamed. I don't know if installing the Realtek drivers after the setup would work, I'm too 'scared' to try now, I've been trying to get my winxp to install ALL day now so I don't want to do it over again by trying if they actually work. I'm sticking with my Sigmatel drivers...
  3. Okay I think that worked! Others can use this method too now

I'm going to test if this works, I'll keep you updated.
  5. Sorry for not replying sooner, I tried to copy the \dell folder onto the cd aswel, see if it helped, but to no avail: winxp used dells (older) drivers instead of the integrated ones. It happened during the text setup (while it was copying files so it could boot with the real setup next time) Thanks to your help I found txtsetup.sif [sourceDiskNames.x86] ... 3=%cdname%,%cdtagfilei%,,\Dell 4=%cdname%,%cdtagfilei%,,\Dell\addon 5=%cdname%,%cdtagfilei%,,\Dell\onboard Is it enough to just remove these lines? PS I'll include the original txtsetup.sif file so you can have a look at it (you don't need to, but I would appreciate it ). TXTSETUP.zip
  6. First I'll tell you what I've done so far: 1) Copy the entire contents of the Dell WinXP Home OEM cd in C:\winxphome 2) Check to see if the folder \svcpack exists, if so delete it (not found) 3) Check svcpack.in_ for any references to any updates (non references found) 4) Start nLite, integrate RyanVM and latest hotfixes, and unattended install info 5) Slipstream WMP10 (with the app provided in this forum) 6) Slipstream my custom bts driverpack with method 1 (cab method) 7) Create the image and burn nLite also deleted this folder from my UWXP root: \dell \dell\addon (dell's WiFi drivers) \dell\onboard (dell's chipset drivers) That folder contained the wifi and chipset drivers, but I didn't need them for my xp cd since I integrated more recent ones with BTS driverbase. Then the winxp setup returns an error: it couldn't copy setupwld.exe, which I was able to find in \dell\addon, along with a lot of other files. It couldn't copy them because I deleted these folders, because I integrated newer versions of these drivers anyway. I checked winnt.sif and svcpack.inf for any references to the \dell folder, to stop them from installing, but I couldn't find them. Is there an other place that might contain the references to install the drivers located in \dell ? Because I need to delete those references in order to be able to install windows Laurent
  7. Heh, your an Australian . I'm not an Australian, I'm a Belgian, but I'm pretty darn close to being an aussie, I lived in your country for 5 years (age 8-13, I'm 18 now though). I must say it's one of the best countries I've ever been too, you should consider yourself lucky to be allowed to live there. Anyway, back on (semi)topic: If you do any webdeveloping, you'll IMMEDIATLY know why webdevs prefer FireFox. Check out my site: http://users.skynet.be/sorber/laso/, it's currently under construction, but did you know I have to put 1,5x my effort in making it look the *SAME* way in IE6 as in FireFox? IE6 always requires special attention. And it doesn't really matter if it's been around longer, the fact of the matter is IE6 has 84 high security risk vulnerabilities, compared to FireFoxes 21 less critical vulnerabilities. Only Opera seems safe enough to use, but imo it's a resource hog (it's bloody fast though )
  8. I'm a webdeveloper and I can assure you, you don't want to support IE6. IE7 is unlikely to be better either, read the following to find out why. Get FireFox. This is no fanboy ranting, but the honest truth: ° FireFox has 21 less critical vulnerabilities, compared to IE6's 84 Highly critical vulnerabilities. ° FireFox will always be safer than IE6 for the simple reason that more people use Internet Explorer, which makes IE the bigger target for hackers. ° FireFox displays pages correctly, as they are coded. IE puts a load of garbage on your screen because it tries to 'interpret' what the webdeveloper wanted to see on his screen. FireFox will display what you code, not some garbled up version of what it thinks you want. ° FireFox is not only safer because it's targetted less, it's also safer because it was written from scratch, unlike IE which was once written, then patched, then patched again, and got some more patches later on... IE is one big steaming pile of patches. There's always Opera too, and I must say Opera 8 is really fast indeed. Unfortunatly Opera went down the same road as IE: it started copying IE's HTML-display bugs to make pages look more like they look in IE ...
