  1. found it. I added user1 to the Administrators group. This means that he has the permissions to add the computer. However, this is not secure. Is there a differnet group which this member should be in, instead of Administrator? hamish
  2. would that be something set on the client, or on the server? Hamish
  3. Hello I have a win2k server running AD and I'm trying to setup a roaming profile user to login to that from a client. The domain is TRONNET.com and the client name is ARCHIMEDES. At the moment, I'm testing, and I have the server (win2k server) and windows 2k pro client. I have successfully set this situation up with one user (profiletest), and am trying to set up a second user (user1). I have made the local user (user1) and copied the profile to a file server etc. However, during the process of following the wizard through "Network ID" on the client, in order to add user1 as a user which logs into the TRONNET.com domain (instead of just to the local computer), I get the following error: "Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error occured: Access Denied" I did read this this might be because I cannot add two different users from the same client, but I'm not sure that can be the case. In any case, I changed the client PC name and tried again, however, I got the same error. Could anyone point me in a the right direction. Regards Hamish

  5. Hello I'm currently messing around with W2k server and trying to setup active directory for a few users. Am I right in thinking that active directory is what one uses to allow users to store their applications settings on a central computer, so that no matter which PC they log in with, their settings in Word, Excel, etc will always remain the same? If so, is this fairly straight forward to setup? Otherwise, please correct me When a person logs into the active directory from teh client, I would like them to receive a small quota on the server, so that they can save documents there, and regardless of which PC they use, this share will always be mounted on their client machine. Again, how simple is this? Last question, where does user information get stored on the server? My Active Directory directory is f:\sysvol\ and in there are folders like f:\sysvol\sysvol\MYDOMAIN.com\ Is it in there that the user information is stored? Any pointers would be great. Regards Hamish
  6. Hiya I'm also looking into Exchange. Does Exchange need to be run on top of an MS server OS? eg windows 2000 server or 2003 server? Or is it a stanalone server? Hamish
  7. Hello I have a small command line programme which works off a configuration file. I would like to write a very simple GUI which can create the config file (basically, a list of commands with the user's choice of directories). Can anyone recommend a good way to start with project? Are there any GUI making GUIs out there? Cheers Hamish
  8. Hey I have been asked to partition a few windows XP computer at work. I'm using Partiition Commadner 9. Is there a risk that it could corrupt/delete/damage the files on the computer? I'm pretty sure that these programmes will all defragment and move the files to a locical order before partitions, but I just wanted to check. What is the case? Hamish
  9. Thank you very much! Does it act as a mail server as well? Do you happen to have a link to a page which explains exacly what it does, other than the MS page? Hamish
  10. Hello al! Great to post here! A client was asking me about MS exchange. Am I right in thinking that it allows people to share their Outlook contact and diary? Is this the only way that the diary can be shared? My second question is: what OS does MS Echange run on? Does it run on XP, or does it need 2000/2003 server? Thanks Hamish
