Change location of \\SERVER\USERS\ share name
hamish replied to hamish's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hiya Just to clarify. When SBS adds a new user, it creates a User home folder. By default, this location is \\server\users\%username%\. I would like to change the location to \\server\usershomefolder\%username% How can I do that? Thanks H -
Hello I have set up a new server and for one reason or another, I have changed the share name of the User home folder. It is set to \\SERVER\USERS\ by default (so a new user's home folder is \\SERVER\USERS\username). I have created my home folder at the share point: \\SERVER\USERSHOMEFOLDER\. WHen I create a new user, it tries to create a folder at \\SERVER\USERS\, instead of \\SERVER\USERSHOMEFOLDER\. Where can I change the settting so that it defaults to my new location? Thanks Hamish

Hello A client has been sold a "new" server, but I really don't think the hardware is new. Is there any way I can find out the age of the motherbaord and, most importantly, the hard drives? THansk Hamish

Hiya I have set up SBS2003 with two hard drives with the system/boot parition (C:) mirrored. If both hard drives are present, then it will boot fine. If the primary drive is missing, then it will not boot. The error I get on the screen is No Operating system found. I think that maybe the MBR on the secondary drive has not been set up correctly. Do I need to alter the boot.ini script when I have the system drive mirrored? THank you Hamish

Hello I have some email acccounts on my PC. THe emails all come onto my Exchange server and I access that server through Outlook. I have three accounts which all go into my Exchange mailbox. When I send an email, it always goes out with my default email address and signature. What I would like is to create an alias that I can select so that I can choose what the displayed sender's name and signature should be. I could type in the from address in the From field each time, but that is aweful. THere must be a way to create different accounts and then selec that account when sending. Is this possible? If you have three POP accounts, then you can choose the account when sending and it performs the same task. Can I do this without POP accounts? THanks you loads in advance Hamish

Hello I have four email accounts and I use a third party POP3 connector to grab all the emails for my 4 POP3 email accounts and store them in my Exchange mailbox. In the Outlook web access, I log into my mailbox and respond to the emails from all four accounts, as htey all appear in there. However, my from: address is always my Exchange email address (the one defined in Active Directory). Is there any way in Outlook web access that I can alter the from address, or which accounts when I reply to an email? Thanks Hamish

Hello I have found out how to do it. However, for some reason it is the standard profile settings which get used, not the domain profile settings. When a user logs on, he select log onto oca domain, not log onto local PC. Strangely, when I selected log onto local PC, I saw the firewall settings which are set on the Domain Profile. Any idea why this would happen? Hamish

Hey I had alrady looked at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...t/wfsp2wgp.mspx which is one of the links there and was confused. It seems to suggest that you manually configure the GPO on the XP client machine itself. If this is the case, then I need to do it for all my clients. I thought that I could somehow set it all up through the server. Thanks H

Hello I have a server in the office running Windows Small Business Server 2003 and a dozen Windows XP machines with SP2. I would like to centralise the windows firewall, so that all of the machines have the same ports open and I don't want any of the users to be able to change anything. The XP machines are part of a domain, and the SBS is the domain controller (domain is oca.local). I believe there is a way to use Group Policy on the SBS to dicate the firewall settings on all the client machines. Can someone please tell me how to do this? I have been into Start -> Admin Tools -> Group Policy Management Have then gone into Forrest (oca.local) -> Domains -> (oca.local) In here, I see GPOs like "SBS Client Computer" and "SBS WIndows Firewall". When I right click on each of these and press Edit, it opens up the Group Policy Object Editor. I have find the place in the editor to change the WIndows Fireall configuration, however, each of these GPOs looks the same in Group Policy Object Editor. They all have "Computer COnfiguration" and "User configuration" trees, with the name of the GPO at the very top. In the Group Policy Management, how do I know which Policys are being appliend to the client PCs? Do you know of a good webpage which gives a good overview of GPO management on a domain? Thanks in advance for your help Hamish

Exmerge: cannot enable Send As and Receive As
hamish replied to hamish's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hey I have now followed this howto: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292509/en-us which suggests making a new security group, and adding the Exmerge user to it. On my test machine, this worked like a charm, but I still get the same error on the production machine. The only difference I see is that on the test machine, I don't have Administrative Groups in the System Manager ( my Mailbox Store is in SERVER). On the production machine, the Mailbox Store is in Administrative Groups -> first administrative group -> servers -> SERVER What could be different? Thanks Hamish -
Hello I'm trying to get Exmerge working. The error I keep getting in Exmerge.log is: [19:51:25] Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d) For setting permissions, I have gone into System Manager in Exchagne. According to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322312/ , the problem is that I need to enable Send As and Receive As as permissions on the Mailbox Store. I think I have done this (I followed the instructions). If I go and look at the permissions for the Mailbox Store, I see that Send As and Receive As are both tick for the user who will run Exmerge (administrator). However, when I go into Advanced, I see that Send As and Receive As are both Deny, inherited from the Parent Object. If I go back up the tree, the next place I can change permissions is SERVER. In here, again Send As and Receive as are Allow in the permissions table, but if I go to Advanced, they are denied by the Parent Object. Would this be my problem? That is, if the parent object were denying access, then it would explain why it doesn't work? Also, what is the Parent Object in question? Thank you in advance for your help Hamish

Hey I have fixed it. It is due to my current setup. In order for it to work properly, you need to use Exchange to download your emails via a POP3 connector. I have another question: how could I set up exchange to use my Broadband providor's SMTP server, instead of using the Exhcnage server itself? Is it something to do with the "Default SMTP Virtual Server"? Thanks Hamish

Hello I have a problem with my Exchange 2003. It won't send out of office auto-replies to emails who are not in the organisation. In the Internet Message Formats, I have enabled the Allow Out of Office Responses. It currently works with people on the domain, but it will not work with other email accounts. One reason that it might be is this. At the moment, each Outlook is set up to get the POP3 emails from a different server. Outlook then saves the emails in the users Exchange Mailbox (Mailbox - Username). Would this cause the current out of office replies not to work, because Exchange doesn't know that the email has arrived (Outlook reads the email first, and puts it in the Mailbox - Username, instead of Echange getting it first). Kind regards Hamish

Hello I have just inherited a Windows 2000 server, with Exchange 2000 on it, but I'm not sure how it is set up. The thing puzzling me is this: Normally, in the Exchange data folder, I'm used to seeing files like .pub and .stm and .edb. In those files, ormally all of the mail and calendar stuff is saved. Howeve,r with this client, in the Exchange data folder, each user seems to have his own folder, and inside that, folders for Inbox, calendar, contacts etc. Each folder, especially the Inbox folder, seems to be populated with .EML files (I think they were called eml anyway). Has this been set up so that each email is an individual file? Or is it something totally different? Thanks Hamish

Hello all I've been looking into OCR software and scanning software so that i can turn my office into a paper free environment. I would like to scan my paper documents into my PC and then, ideally, have the details go straight into a searchable database so that I can always search to find the files I want. Does anyone know of some software which does this? If you don't know of some software which does the second part (database), then does anyone know of some good software just for automatically scanning lots of paper into eletronic format? Kind regards Hamish

Hello I would like to know if there is a program for Windows which can tell me which application is accessing a file. My MS Outlook file is being used by something (Outlook is closed). When I try and copy or move the Outlook.pst file, the error is: "Cannot move Outlook: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again" Are there any programs which can tell me what is using this file? Thanks Hamish

Hey Fixed! 1. Open Outlook 2. In the menu, click Go -> Folder List 3. In the left hand panel, find the Contacts link underneath "Mailbox - Lynn" 4. Right click on this Contacts link, and press Properties. 5. Go to the Outlook Address Book tab 6. Tick "Show this folder as an e-mail address book" 7. Change the name to Contacts in Exchange 8. Press Apply and OK. 9. Restart Outlook. 10. When you go into the Address Book, one of the drop down address books should be Contacts in Exchange. Hamish

Hello I maintain a small network with Exchange 2003 server and Outlook XP and 2003 clients. All of the information is stored on the Exhcange server and in Outlook the Inboxes are all in "Mailbox - Username", instead of Personal Folders. This works great for calendar sharing and emails. However, i recently discvered that when I moved my contact list from Contacts in Personal Folders to Contacts in Mailbox - Username, I can no longer access those contacts. For example, when I go to send an email, I go to Tools -> Address Book and I can choose where to find the contacts from. Among the options are Global Address Book (the users of the server) and Contacts. If I click on the contacts link, it only looks in the Contacts in Personal Folders. Thus, I cannot seem to be able to access the contacts who are stored in the Contacts in Mailbox - Username. Does anyone know how I can make Outlook look in this folder for the contacts? Many thanks Hamish

Windows 2003 Server: Fax serice not starting
hamish replied to hamish's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hey I was afraid that you were going to say that! Hamish -
Hello I'm running Windows 2003 Small Bus Server. I went into services.msc and tried to restart the fax service, but it hasn't started. In the "Status" column it just says "Starting", and I cannot stop it and try again. When I told it to restart it took ages, and eventually gave an error about not starting the required time period. How can I stop it starting and then try again? Thanks Hamish
