  1. Hi. I have a couple of mobile clients on my network. Windows Server 2003 SBE is the Server OS, clients are XP SP2, Outlook 2003. In the office, everything works fine, however when they are mobile and connect up over the VPN (the standard VPN client built into Windows), everything works except for Outlook. Drives, printers, accounting software, it's all fine. But Outlook hangs on the "Trying to connect" on the lower right.
  2. I've recently come across a problem with one of the comptuers in my domain. The client computer runs Windows 2000. Server is 2003 SBE, ISA 2004. When the user goes to browse the internet, you HAVE to enter the "http://www." in order to go anywhere. For example, if they type in "dcecu.org" they get a "page cannot be displayed" error, but if they go to "http://www.dcecu.org" it works fine. It's not an issue for the "dot com" domains seeing as they just hit CTRL+ENTER and go...but the other domains are an issue. Anybody have any ideas??
  3. I have no clue...I'm going to try a re-install when I get time... I can't even copy to shared folders from a client PC. It's weird as heck.
  4. What happened that broke Exchange? Did you do any hardware work that may have caused a problem? You could try re-installing Exchange and that may do it. I had the exact problem a few weeks ago. I was replacing a set of Raid 5 drives which contained the Exchange databases. Stupid me just made a backup of the partition and then restored the backup after I replaced the drives. Exchange doesn't like that. If you replace the drive that Exchange is on, you need to move the databases off the drive, using the utility in Exchange, and then move them back. Hindsight is 20/20...
  5. I am experimenting with some Server 2003 SBE stuff. I have enabled the FTP server for transfering files back and forth. I had it working at one time, but now I'm having a problem uploading files just out of the blue. I've check the permissions, and everything looks ok. Here's the error I get: An error occured while copying files to the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to put files on the server. Details: 200 Type set to I 227 Entering Passive Mode ([server IP address], 23,12). 550 Access is denied All the permissions look fine. I've even given my personal username "full access," along with the group that I belong to. Any other things I should look for? I've even went as far as re-installing the OS from scratch. Thanks for any help.
  6. I'd also prefer to build my own, but otherwise, I'd say Gateway.
  7. I'll try the registry trick and see if that works. There are a few other programs (any MS Office programs for example) that won't load, so I may end up doing a re-format just to save time if I can't get anywhere with modifying registry permissions.
  8. well, nothing used to happen, but I don't know anymore. You may be blocked from downloading updates from Microsoft now that they've started authenticating Windows systems. If you're a business, I would take care to purchase legal lisences of software. Although chances are slim, you are much more likely to receive a software audit, especially if you have lots of computers. If MS takes any action at all, they're going to go after the big guys, not the home users that have 1 pirated copy of Windows. It's not worth their time. The cat and mouse game continues...
  9. I use a combination of 4 different programs. Ad Aware, Spybot, PestPatrol and Microsoft. Each program has a different way of looking for and removing spyware and between the 4 of them, I usually have good luck in removing most spyware. Panda online scan also works good. The nice thing about PestPatrol and MS is that they run in the background and prevent stuff from being installed. The latest version of ZA Pro is also cool with the spyware protection added. Another one to add to my mix of anti-spyware weapons!
  10. MS Update is really handy. It's much easier than going to Windows Update, then Office Update and whatever....
  11. Yeah, you should be ok. But you can't legally use it on both laptops. If you have purchased a retail copy of XP Pro, you can install it on whatever system you want, as many times as you want, as long as you don't have more than one copy installed at a time. If you purchased a laptop with XP Pro pre-installed, you could not use that copy anywhere else. That is an OEM copy and "bound" to the hardware it was sold with.
  12. Anybody ever have a problem when you go to "Add or Remove Programs" and it's completely blank...no programs listed? There no disk activity or excess CPU activity, so I know that it's not like it's still trying to read the registry. Any ideas? Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 1 (I know, I know...haven't updated it yet...but it's not my computer ) I had a problem with the c:\windows\system32\config\system file being corrupt, so I went to the recovery console and copied one from c:\windows\repair\system.bak That got me back into Windows, I re-created the user profile and restored all his settings, but now the Add/Remove programs entry is blank. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. I've searched high and low and what I've found only applies to Win9x.
  13. Will this cause any Exchange issues? I wouldn't think it would if it's a full disk backup, it should restore the folders and files exactly the same. But my experience with Exchange has been that sometimes it can be quite fussy about things like that.
  14. Hello all. I've been a lurker for a while, but thought I'd make a post. Good source of information here.
  15. I have a question on Raid5 on Windows 2000 SBE. I have to replace some hard drives. There are currently (3) 9GB SCSI drives in a RAID5 configuration, configured as Drive D:\. I am upgrading to (3) 73GB SCSI drives. My question is, do I just run like a full Windows Backup and back up the D:\ drive, replace the drives, format them, configure them for RAID5 and restore the backup? Or can I just replace the drives one at a time and let them populate themselves? My concern is that this is the drive that the user folders are, along with the Exchange Server install. Thanks for any assistance.
