  1. Well, ReactOS is an NT clone.

Wine & Linux are not so mutch compatible with drivers.

The unique way would be E/OS LX, but "is based on parts of linux, freebsd, reactos and wine sources" so it just could help.

Anyway my idea have a different approach that allows you to have a fully functional system since 0.0.0.0.0.1

  2. What is the Tango Desktop Project?

The Tango Desktop Project exists to create a consistent user experience for free and Open Source software with graphical user interfaces.

While the look and feel of an application is determined by many components the initial work has been done on unifying the look of the individual icon sets.

Tango defines a standard icon style guidelines document that applications and desktop enviroments can adhere to. Work has started on creating a new base icon theme based on a standard icon naming specification. In addition, we provide transition utilities to create icon themes for existing GNOME and KDE desktops.

Eventually, the Tango Desktop initiative aims to provide:

    * A specified default native look.

    * A subsystem to help standardize toolkits on a common look and feel.

    * A complete, standard set of application, mimetype, and stock icons to build upon a style guide.

    * Cross-desktop humane interface guidelines.

Check it out --> Official website

    Tango Icon Gallery :w00t:

...hope to see some kind of 'pack' that change 9x into a tango-style desktop !!! :thumbup

  3. note that RP contains original Windows ME files
that's the reason i asked XP theme in uSP !

Anyway i'm pretty sure that XP icons are patented, so i think another way is to get a cool XP-like patent-free icon set. Here are some links (personal use is free for all)...

DRL WindowsXP Visual Style (cooool !!!) download it now

    Fast Icon's

    Yahir Vite's

    ...more @ InterfaceLIFT

And from Wesley Parish' editorial @ OSViews:

MS Win98 users... I've got good news for you. ReactOS' cmd.exe works in Win98, and it's a lot better than command.com. So if you are tired of mucking around with the Windows command line but still need to use it, download the ReactOS LiveCD and copy cmd.exe to the C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND directory. You'll be glad you did.
    ReactOS Nightly :w00t:

Finally, already suggested: Windows Explorer Patch (256 color TrayIcons)

  4. What tweaks do you consider to be useful for everybody?

    Optimize Swap File Performance

Optimize the DefaultRcvWindow & DefaultTTL Settings

    Speed Up ISP Logon Time

    Faster Modem Dialing

Change the Size of the Virtual Disk Cache

    and mutch more !

Do you know WinBoost, Window Power Tools tweaks ?

There are many interesting settings for everyone !

What about adding a registry clean before/after the installation ??

  5. MPC, vlc, BSPlayer, K-Lite Codec Pack, ffdshow, LAME etc. Where can you stop?

BSPlayer & K-Lite Codec Pack are not open sourced.

MPC & FFDSHOW are more in MicroSoft vein (more vfw) than VLC.

If you decide to put FFDSHOW you don't need anything other (for audio too).

(sorry i edited while you were answering...)

About NTFS: already discussed, and if i remember well... it's (almost) impossible.

Anyway here is an open source implementation: NTFS driver yes.gif

I suggest to take in some consideration OpenBFS wacko.gif

    Cosmetic: Open source Icons/boots/walls whistling.gif

Another thing: do you think it's usefull (it possible) to 'update' DOS utils ? (format, fdisk, etc)
