  1. Cluberti & Cptmurphy.. It is working now! I looked at one particular MS post on the "activeX" error messages and it said it might be a problem with the Java. Went to Java and downloaded latest for my W98 SE and went back. That didn't do it, but now when I right-clicked on a game and hit 'properties' tab, instead of "no address", and "Javascript void", it listed an arcade address that I put in my "Trusted site" list and then was able to open, and play, a game. Still have one problem, and that is there is no sound anymore on games. RealAudio, and movie sounds are OK, just not games....any ideas (not like you didn't do enough already...a thousand thanks!) john
  2. cptmurphy... Well, no dice. still get message. I have to ask because I just thought of it, but I do have a thing called 'Cookie Monster' that I run every so often. Is it possible I have erased a necessary cookie? Is it possible for activeX to be removed accidently and that is why nothing seems to work...I just don't have activeX anymore? I really don't know what I'm talking about here..just guessing. Any other ideas? thanks for your time!
  3. Thanks... this is the link: http://www.optonline.net/Games A few of the simpler graphic games load. but the majority will not.
  4. Thanks Cluberti.. I just tried adding the address to 'Trusted Site', but the same message came up when I ckicked a game. Then I tried right-clicking and checking 'properties' on one of the games in the list and it said Protocol: unknown protocol Type: not available Address: Javascript void(0) Would this mean anything specific to the problem?
  5. Thanks CptMurphy... I just don't get why it would happen after a year with the same settings and playing the same games. Could there be some kinda cookie problem also? Do I find that base domain name by right clicking and then going to 'properties' to get the exact address?
  6. Hello all.. Was advised to move this post from "Gamers..." board to here. OK, real novice here, so please be patient. Have W98SE, IE6, NortonAV 2004, Spybot. Never had this happen before...went on Optimum Online Cable homepage yesterday, clicked on games, then tried loading a game and got this IE message "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. Page may not display properly" and game just won't load. I went to Tools/internet options and checked the internet security for the ActiveX, and all the settings look ok, signed version enabled, unsigned disabled, etc. Called the cable co. and they said it is definitely the Norton antivirus live update (some new definition is causing prob.). Called Symantec and the tech had me shut everything down in MS Config/Startup that said Norton/Symantec. Then rebooted and tried game again...same message. Norton said it's not their stuff causing the problem. Could Spybot have done something? Is there a way to load something in the "Trusted Sites" thing, or does that have nothing to do with it? I am lost, and don't even know where to begin. My wife will kill me if she can't unwind with her "Pop and Drop" game. Hate to say it, but if you do have an answer, I'll prob. need step-by-step direction. thanks in advance for any help, John

  8. Hello all... Something recently began to occur with regularity regarding my year-old monitor. During bootup the Windows screen and all bootup text shows up fine on screen, but when bootup is complete the screen picture is all diagonally askew and will stay that way indefinitely. If I just click the monitor off and on again...the problem disappears and the screen is fine till next bootup. Does anyone have any ideas how to eliminate this annoyance? For the record, I am pretty unknowledgable about PC equipment, so please, if possible, try not to be too technical if you can help it, thanks. I have win98se and a KDS 17" monitor...don't know if you need more info than this. Thanks in advance for any and all help, jotho
  9. eidenk, or anyone else that may have a suggestion... Regarding my "I cannot get those files out of Disk Cleanup" comment: In the Disk Cleanup utility you can click on one of those 'generic boxes' you mention (in this case, the one marked 'temp. inter.files') and then click on 'view files'...then the folders and files that are listed in the clicked box will be shown. Those are the files to which I am referring. As i have attempted to explain (albeit, unclearly at first), when I do the above, I see 8 folders (with names such as 69uboluv and shi7klmb, all with properties: C/windows/temporary internet files/content.IE5) and one file marked 'index.dat' and one marked 'desktop', also having the same properties. I had upgraded to IE 6.0, and, due to my PC naivete, assumed that any files marked 'temporary internet files IE 5' could be deleted. I deleted all the above mentioned folders and files but they are now showing up repeatedly in Disk Cleanup, in the category 'Temporary Internet Files' (after I click on 'view files'). I should mention here that for convenience I use the Disk Cleanup tool solely, rather than clicking on 'Recycle Bin', and have ALL the categories checked so that I may cleanup and delete everything in one action (I hope that made sense). Now, after using said Disk Cleanup, I notice that 5 of the 8 folders mentioned are gone. But that lasts only temporarily, and at a later point the same 8 folders and two files all appear again in the 'Temp. Inter. Files category of Disk Cleanup. Although I am a novice PC user, it would appear to me these files are still required system files since they seem impervious to deletion. Now, if this is the case, how can i get these folders and files back to where they belong so that they no longer keep showing up in Disk Cleanup/Temporary Internet Files? Are these IE5 folders and files actually temporary and unnecessary, or are they required for IE 6.0 to function (I would have though that the upgrade would have changed the names of any IE5 files that are still required, so as not to confuse the user (silly me, right?). Also, a second question...through my quick-click blundering I have duplicated a folder on my C/ file tree (sorry, don't know the tech. name for this 'file tree') and when I try to right-click and delete the copy I get a refusal because it is a system file and cannot be deleted (even though there is an exact copy of it sitting right next to it). Is there a way of deleting a accidently duplicated system file without screwing things up?? Thanks all, and I hope I have been clear enough with my info...my original post was on my first day of membership in the forum, so I'm a little green yet, and my PC knowledge is very limited.
  10. EIDENK>>>> Please read my corrected post (directly above my initial post) name=jotho I gave some wrong info on 1st post
  11. Sorry...in my post just below about deleted IE5 files, I said I could not get them out of my recycle bin. I meant to say my Disk Cleanup tool (which lists recycle bin, as you know) and the files are listed in the Temporary Internet Files. This is why I could not just click 'Restore'. I cannot get those files out of Disk Cleanup...they refuse to be moved back, or deleted completely. Is there a way to transfer them (though it says they can't be moved) or should I just say the heck with it. There is also a DC67 folder (i think thats the name) that has been in Disk Cleanup for a year that I cannot get back to where it belongs. Any tips? Also, I erroneously duplicated a file folder in my C/MyComputer tree...they are 100% the same but I can't delete one of them because it is an essential file. Is there a way to do this? Sorry about the incorrect info before Once again, thanks for any help, jotho
  12. Hello all... Sadly, I am a PC newbie who thought after upgrading to IE 6.0 he could just delete any old IE files. Yes, I am embarassed. A couple of questions: 1) I deleted a bunch of files marked Temporary Internet Files/Content IE5. My recycle bin now has ten items, one of which is index.dat, one marked desktop, and eight folders with names like 69uboluv and shi7klmb. When i go to TOOLS/internet options/general/delete files I end up with only 2-3 folders and the index.dat file left in the recycle bin. I am supposing these are needed system files (although marked IE5) so, how can I get the bunch of them back to where they should be?...they seem immovable from the recycle bin. 2) In the c/program files/uninstall information there are a bunch of IE4 folders. Are all these IE folders (aside from the IE6.0 I am now using) completely necessary? Is there any way of finding which folders and files, if any, can be safely deleted? I'm pretty sure I have a bunch of unnecessary crap on my PC. 3) After running Internet Explorer repair tool I checked System Information and it said system resources 83% free. A bit later, with no other apps going, it goes down to 72%, and later into the mid sixties. Is it normal for this to happen even when not running a bunch of stuff (other than the anti-virus and zone alarm)? Is this what is called 'leaking resources'? I am using W98SE. Thanks in advance for any and all info you can provide to this fairly clueless guy. Jotho
