  1. I've been doing some installs this weekend and experienced the same in every install.

I was thinking it was caused by the update pack used, but perhaps it is nLite after all?

(I also started with a SP3 slipstreamed disc)

  2. Hopefully you will find the cause (and thus the solution), because I have had several installations that out-of-the-blue complained that the password (which was not set!) was expired... Guess this is the reason?!

How can I check whether my current (running) installation is having this problem as well? (without waiting for this warning to appear)

  3. Seems to work just fine here (running on a new installation since 2 days; SP3 slipstreamed as well as IE7 and WMP11, all with nLite).

  4. No problem slipstreaming 5508 with 1.4.5 beta 2 here.

PS: when nLite slipstreams the SP you can already see the build number, so no need to (re)install XP to check that...

  5. Where is the 'removes components'!? :)

It pains me to see when people use it only to integrate SATA drivers.

Actually, (removing) "Windows components" is described in step 18 on page 16 (right after step 17 "Raid and sata drivers")...

  6. nLite is mentioned in the March 2008 issue of the Dutch magazine "Tips & Trucs".

In a 6 page article called "A perfect XP" with subtitle "Slipstream everything which improves XP" nLite is the tool used to slipstream XP and integrate drivers and other software.

  7. as a debug u can try reinstall wmp11 manually....and if it works please report back.

(Wo)Man, you saved my day! In fact, several days :thumbup (I already was afraid I had to do a repair or even fresh install).

After a manual reinstall using the original WMP11 executable as distributed my Microsoft, my MTP device is recognized as MP3 player!

  8. Hello,

Recently I've been working on a clean installation of XP on my PC. One of the first things I do after only Windows itself has been installed is checking whether all my peripherals still work. Somehow I managed to forget to check my Philips PSS231 MP3-player, which is a MTP device. After several evenings of tweaking the installation I finally connected the MP3 player to discover that it is recognized as a camera instead of a MP3 player...

I vaguely remember having this problem in the past, but my previous/current installation works just fine: the player is recognized as an audio device. As far as I know, I have used the same nLite settings for the new installation. One difference is that the old installation used a WMP10 add-on. I installed WMP11 later by hand. Now, I directly integrated WMP11 using booogy's add-on.

Most likely I once again made a stupid mistake and removed too much... What options do effect MTP devices?

And (FAQ :blushing: ) is possible to restore these without a complete re-install?

  9. I've started experimenting with nLite again and lost quite some time because all my new installs are lacking internet connectivity

After quite some investigation, I discovered that the DHCP client service does not start, because one of the services it depends on, NetBT (NetBios over Tcpip), is disabled.

I can resolve this by opening the Device Manager, selecting "Show hidden devices", and setting the NetBT type to "System". Then I can manually start the DHCP client and will have internet connectivity again.

I guess I selected something for removal, or disabled something, which I should not have done (I did use the DHCP compatibility option of nLite 1.3.0.4 though).

What option disables the NetBT service?

  10. Actually, I'm not sure whether I would use this functionality myself...

I think I need to individualize WMP first, before using the identifier from the current installation.

Thus, storing it in a .reg file (myself) which I manually restore will be just fine.

  11. Quite some time ago, I asked how to keep DRM data (of WMA files I bought) when reinstalling Windows XP.

Actually, after a lot of hard work it turns out to be rather simple:

    Backup/restore:

    • all files in c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM
    • registry key KEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3DA165B6-CC41-11d2-BDC6-00C04F79EC6B}

Apparently, that registry key stores the unique identifier of WMP.

So, now I can start experimenting with nLite and Ryan's update pack again :D

Any chance that retrieving the current WMP unique identifier (nLite reading it from the registry) and setting it in a nLite'd installation will be part of a future nLite release?

  12. In WMP, there is an option to backup your license to My Documents.

On the new system, re-use the utility to retsore license and plya your drm files.

That's WMP9/10 only, as I stated in my initial post.

WMP11 has no backup/restore functions, or I am unable to find them...

  13. I have been using nLite/RyanVM for quite some time, but now I really hesitate to perform another clean Windows install.

Since I've upgraded WMP to WMP11 I have bought several DRM-protected music tracks. Unlike WMP9/10, WMP11 is not able to backup/restore licenses (this did the trick for a clean install in the past). This means I would loose the licenses for all my bought tracks.

Or is there a way to save the DRM licenses for my PC after all? (I don't dare to try whether just storing everything in "C:\Document and Settings\All users\DRM" will do).

    What can I do?
