The Time Zone update microsoft released has broken one of my applications. I am configuring a script to uninstall the update, delete the registry keys and import back the old ones(because uninstalling the update doesnt remove the registry keys). This part is done.
Now I need a way to block that update without using sus or wsus AND without manually going the Windows update site and checking the box "dont show this update again"
I already have my internal computers which gets updates from our WSUS server and declining the updates work fine for the internals. I have customers that use my application too and I cannot manage them in any way shape for form. My only hope is to script something and have them run it as a local administrator
Because of the skillset of my users, I dont want to have to walk them through anything, it needs to be entirely automated.
Everything else works.. I just need to know how to block this update using a vbs, batch, some other command line, wmi.. anything that can be automated.. even a registry hack..
Any ideas.. I just need to get this update to NOT install again after I remove it.

I know this sounds silly and really doesnt make much sense because you would think MS would have gotten away from this by now but....
do you have the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service disabled and/or not running on the Domain Controller?
You will run into many group policy, active directory problems if this service is disabled on the DC

Even if groups had been used.. if there are no group policies applied adn you are just moving users from OU to OU then group membership is a non factor
The only problem you should run into are if group policies are applied

Here is what I use.
It is a script which runs on.. really any machine which will remotely log off/ shutdown/restart all computers in an OU which you specify. Then just schedule this once on whatever computer and it will do its task

1) Terminal Services is a benefit because.. for example you have many remote users who want to be able to do work remotely. Running network operations over a vpn or even just an internet connection can be daunting sometimes. Terminal Service allows you to give desktop access and 10/100/1000mb whatever access to your network services. It is a cost savings when it comes to hardware also. Terminal Services can be ran on just about any hardware and any OS.
2) Terminal Services IS RDP in the essence that RDP is a protocol that Terminal Server client(remote desktop client) uses to access the server. An example would be Internet explorer/Firefox is the application you use to access http services off a server.
3) Not sure what you are asking about here. Windows activation, licensing.... please explain
4) I guess to answer the question. Terminal services can only do as much as RDP allows since Terminal Services uses the RDP protocol to access the server
I guess the bottom line is RDP is a protocol and Terminal Services is the application that utilized RDP

Yes, Load it on a webserver and make that page your desktop.. similar to the way you set like say google.com as your desktop.. just call the url.. BUT.. it has to be on a webserver and you have to call it via a url

Here is the script I use. It will map printers and network drives based on Active Directory group membership. You dont even need to touch the script itself.. it runs based on the contents of a csv file

yeah alot of it depends on what is more specific for your company. My company spans multiple sites so I just go location - department - typeNumber
so det-sales-wk01

As an admin of a surfcontrol webfilter I can only say this.. If your admin spends a lot of time fine tuning the webfilter.. your chances are not very good. If your admin installed it and let it run, SurfControl does not categorize very many proxies and there are a ton of them available. Atleast once a week I find a new proxy that someone is using and I will block that.. It all depends on the upkeep of the filter categorizations but proxy is the best way...

I used to use serve-u and it still is a good program, however it cost money to use it and filezilla works just as good if not better and it is free..
If you have a valid copy of serve-u then I would just use that though... no sense in wasting money. They are both equally good to me.

1) make sure the account shows up in active directory users and computers
2) make sure your computer is pointing to your Active directory DNS server as its primary dns server.

I have never heard of Windows Venus.. maybe you are thinking Windows Neptune. This was a development drop due to technology, time and money constraints..

Or are you talking the future from now and mean Windows Vienna(formerly known as blackcomb)

If the server is behind a NAT connection. there needs to be 1 to 1 ip map. Not sure what you are using for VM but you need to find a way translate the address through the NAT'd connection.
why not just bridge the connection in the VM software. the only thing you are gaining by NAT'ing the connection is logical seperation of the 2 networks.. if there is no reason for this then I would just setup a bridged nic configuration in the VM

The support itself is not supported in windows however most well known server nic's have support for teaming NIC's. Broadcom Netxtreem II's can do it as I have it done on my exchange server. I am sure Intel has something similar.

The only way to truly segregate the storage device from the internet is to do so physically. You would probably be OK with an up-to-date server with good security policies and effective NTFS permissions.3 id also like to have a some type of a dedicated storage server that only can be connected to by people on the network, and it also can not connect to the internet (can people on the network connect to this wirelessly ??)Actually.. if you disable windows file and print sharing on the adapter connected to the internet, then really they will have to use an exploit of some sort to access files on the server from the internet side. Minor input but yeah.. the only way to TRULY segregate it is on a separate server.

It can be run on wmsde, HOWEVER, keep in mind wmsde has a 2gb database file limit. Sure it could take a while to get up there.. but in my instance.. if you are buying Project Server, you are trying to collaborate alot of documents and dont really want to be restricted. It is all gonna depend on how big you/your company is planning on getting and how extensively you plan on using it.

Project server allows you to collaborate multiple projects together into 1 interface and allows other people to see the projects and timelines without opening up multiple project files. It allows you to schedule time with all the different users. Basically put.. It takes all the resource allocation and time tables from all the projects you submit to it and puts them into one big interface so you can see your resource allocation, projects and what not..
It integrates very well into sharepoint as to the fact that sharepoint is required for the installation. It takes advantage of how sharepoint pulls together information and usernames and authentication.
Basically Project Server is a Microsoft Project front end to Sharepoint.

not exactly "cart based" but I think this is close to what you are looking for

I have been using it since version 3.0

Other than giving you another way to map a network drive. One thing I have found and that I recently ran into was a bad switch which was causing hicups in the network which was causing network drive disconnections.... just a thought

Fizban is correct. you would have to create an outlook form to accomplish this.
just google outlook forms and you will find a wealth of information on how to create/use them.

Exchange Server Public Folders? are you using Exchange Server?

You could use either the dsadd utility in windows 2003 or you could use csvde from windows 2000/2003. Either one should do what you want it to do.

Block windows update KB931836
in Windows XP
Posted
If it were only that easy.
I was looking for a real answer. I already know what you have stated. It is not a program I wrote, it is a software package we purchased.
If you really must know, there is a fix for it but they dont distribute it for free unless you purchase their maintenance agreement, which, besides my best efforts, my company decided NOT to go with since they didn't see the necessity for it. Now I am in the process of attempting to get my budget extended by the powers to be. This is not something that just happens over night because this is going to cost 10's of thousands of dollars(which is why they felt they didnt need to renew) so i need help with a solution here.
I know how to fix the problem, I just need to know who to stop it from happening again until I can get the money to get the upgrade to stop all the nonsense I am going through now. All of the basics have been covered. I basically need help with a check box now
So seriously, I really dont want to hear "its your companies fault for not updating" or "well you should simply call them up for a fix" because I actually came out with my fix before the vendor did and I posted it on some forums and helped others out many others with it well before the vendor could.
So now that you know everything. My question is still the same. How can I disable an update without wsus, or having my users having to do anything other than click on a file and run it.
Sorry if I sound rude but I am just stressed with this issue because I have hunderds of people calling my support desk and they cant even tell me where the start button is, let alone walking then through fixing the application.
Thanks for any help in advance.
