  1. XPpro/SP2.IE7 I installed some Microsoft updates on Jan 6th to 9th and since then I have had problem with Standby Computer will go into Standby but is not shutting down the motherboard and its fans and I measured the current drain as 28 watts Before the updated Standby turned everything off and the current drain was only 5 watts I have a secondary drive and had not installed the updates and Standby worked as expected. Then installed the updates an the problem returned. I believe there is a registry fix, but need help please. So far Microsoft UK have not helped, but did suggest that nVidia video driver could be at fault but this doesn't mkae sense as I had installed the driver on my secondary drive anyway.
  2. This is a warning. In XP/IE7 if installing Yahoo toolbar 7.09 be careful not to enable all add-ons as the result can be that problems will arise with some sites, amongst which Windows update which opens but is jammed up and cannot be used. I had to uninstall the tool bar, reset IE7 then re-install toolbar and be very selective about which add-ons are enabled. In fact I have only enabled Java Anyone else had similar difficuties?
  3. XPpro/Sp2 fully updated. I use a Router (Speedtouch 780WL) with LAN and normally get download speeds of around 9 MB/sec (Bulldog 16 MB/sec) However when coming out of Standby or Hibernation the download speed drops to 2 to 3 MB/sec I can recover by either re-booting or by re-starting my Router This has happened on 3 separate computers Anyone have any knowledge as to why this occurs and whether there is a fix
  4. I tried to install 64bit Vista RC2 (as precursor of full Vista) on physically independent slave drive "D"whilst retaining 32 bit XPpro/SP2/IE7 on my default drive "C". This apparently created a confusion as on a re-boot both drives were shown as default and neither would open normally (nor in safe mode). Tried to change this both in boot.ini and in System/Advanced/Startup & Recovery/ Edit but changes were disallowed. In the end, after I had tried everyting including wiping the default drive, I had to re-install from scatch and tried the same process with 64 bit XPpro with precisely the same result. My question is, essentially, can this be done and/or does the 64 bit version always take precednce or can't the "mbr" handle both? What am I doing wrong? I have asked Microsoft and get no sensible reply. Help
  5. I am about to take the plunge and install Vista beta 2 64 bit from the DVD kit provided by Microsoft. I have a secondary drive on which it will be installed. Now I am rather ancient (age 72) and need some of your wonderful expert knowledge - I suspect quite trivial, so sorry in advance. Here goes. 1. Can I install over an existing 32 bit XPpro/SP2 installation or is it necessary to go throuch a re-format/install process? 2. I have an Asus A8N-SLI motherboard with 64 bit AMD 4200 CPU and an Audigy 2ZS Audio card. Does the Creative software work in Vista? 3. Currently use Norton System Works 2006 for a/v control. Does ths work or is there another a/v program that is known to work. 4. Is there a site which can tell me what programs will work in this environment and those which will not? 5. I know there are some broswers which don't like IE7.0 which is bundled with Vista. I need some feebcack, please
  6. XPpro/Sp2 I had a perfectly good system until I tried updating from IE6 to IE7 beta, which I uninstalled as there were some conflicts with various software. However now I have two silly problems which may be or may not be related: 1. I use Java VM 1.5.07 to view some grahic pages, eg Nasdaq Heatmaps. Now when I open the page, the graphic does not run. I have re-installed Java and no change. 2. Messenger 7.5 now has 6 large blue question marks on the left side. Also re-downloaded. I have run a/v and anti trojan software and AdAware SE/Xoftspy and nothing untoward I have also run sfc /scannow, ErrorNuker etc in the hope of finding somethind awry, but nothing shows up I really don't want to go through a complete re-install, so can someome please guide me to a solution.
  7. Apart from Windows Media 10 and Real Player with which I have SuperPlus problems, can anyone recommend an alternative please? XPpro/SP2

    Hibernation

XP pro/SP2, A8N-SLI with AMD 64bit 4000+, nvidia 68OOGT Audigy 2 ZS platinum. I can enter Hibernation normally in Windows Task Manager and system Hibernates OK. But on re-booting BIOS setup starts normally and recovery bar runs, but then system stalls completely and I have to effect a hard turn off and reboot. I then get an announcement: The last attempt to restart the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to restart again? 1. Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot 2. Continue with restart If I, then normal boot, but notification the the System has recovered from a serious error. And Microsoft feedback suggests a driver error, If 2. Goes back to the above announcement Standby is OK I have re-installed the nVidia video driver Any help gratefully accepted.

    Hibernate

Yes, I have installed Logitech Driver for my keyboard as the default Windows keyboard driver did not permit the use of the sleep button. Also the Logitech Version has a green volume control icon across the desktop which earlier versions of Sound Blaster had, but 2 ZS does not have.
  10. For a few years I have relied on Registry Mechanic and Norton System Works to sort out 2 drives with XPpro/SP2, but I thought it worthwhille to look at other utilities. Error Doctor found 1. 8 Active X com errors 2. 2 Device diriver errors 3. 2 Windows Start-up errors 4. 20 Windows short-cut errors PC Bug Doctor found 1. 11 Invalid CLSID 2. 20 Missing Short-cuts PC onPoint found 1. 51 Registry scan errors 2. 5 Invalid Short-cuts These are sufficiently different and before paying for one or other, I really would appreciate feedback

    Hibernate

Windows XPPro/SP2 A8N-SLI Motherboard. AMD 64 4000+ Logitech Y-RF21 keyboard and software. I can hibernate from Cntrl/Alt/Del (after enabling it in Control Panel\Power Options). However, at one time, I had a Power Options panel which asked me what I wanted to do with the sleep button. This has vanished and all I can do with the keyboard sleep button is to go into "Standby" which is not quite the same thing. Anyone know how to get the sleep button options on to Power Option/Advanced?
  12. My suggestion is that you have remaining bits an pieces on the drive. My solution to problems of re-installation are solved by using a free utility "KillDisk" downloadable to a floppy and run from floppy in boot up. This fills the drive with "00" (taking quite a long time) and then there is no problem re-installing XPSP2
  13. Once, a long time ago, I had this sort of problem - it arises from the fact that bits of previous installation are still on the drive, My solution which always works is to run a free utility "KillDisk" downloadable to a floppy and run from your floppy as the first boot in BIOS setup. This fills the drive with "00" all the way through (a fairly long process!), After that you should be able to install XPSP2 with no problem
  14. Windows XPpro SP2. Problem: BT-Yahoo Browser opens satisfactorily but on some but not all searches the browser jams up and I get error message; Yahoo Browser szAppName:ybrowser, exe szAppVer:2004.2.13.1 sxModName: hungapp szModVer:0000 Offset 0000000 And Technical Message C:\DOCUME~1\NAME~1\LOCALS'1\WER3d15.dir00\ybrowser.exe.mdmp ..........................................................................\appcompat.txt Other browsers like MSN, Netscape 7.2 and Opera are unaffected. I have used Spybot 1.3, SpyKiller 2005. Adaware SE Ace Utilities, Registry First Aid and ErrorNuker and I feel that one or other has done damage, Can anyone tell me if they have had a similar experience and what to do about it.

    Twin Drives

I have two 120 GB drives on which, as a safety precaution, I have installed XP pro, fully updated and a variety of programs on both drives. I have a problem. If "C" drive becomes corrupted (not an infrequent situation) I return it to a raw state using KillDisk utility then Install from CD (In BIOS setup), but the installation insists on labelling the drive as "F" and not "C". However I found that if I deleted "D" drive, then I could format and install both "C" and "D" normally. But this, of course deleted a perfectly good installation on "D". Latterly I have found that if I physically disconnect "D" drive, then the installation goes to "C" OK. I can then reconnect "D" and identify it in System/Advanced/Systems setup/Edit and "D" is recognizes in "My Computer" Does anyone have any idea why all this nonsense occurs? I also noted during installation it is not possible to delete "C" as it has 292MB of software necessary for the system, whilst "D" is deletable. As this is the case, I thught it wise to use "D" as my default drive - ha,ha, I have tried both in BIOS setup and in System/Advanced/Systems Setup/Edit to change the default to Drive "D" but it just doesn't work and I need advice as to how to change fthe default boot up rom the primary drive "C" to the slave drive "D" System is A7N8X deluxe Rev2, AMD 3200+, 512MB PC3200 RAM and two 120GB drives with single partition. OS is XPpro fully updated
