  1. AAAAARRRRGHHHHH!

This is the error message I get no matter which browser I've used:

    Secure Connection Failed

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

(Yeah, like how? I can't access the website!)

I'm trying to watch movies or videos online at various sites. I did not used to get this at the same sites several years ago.

All right, now- the laptop I am using also has a broken hard drive so I am using Puppy Linux stashed in the RAM. It is a cheap broken "throwaway" laptop, it has nothing of value on it, and I only want to use it for this purpose. Therefore I am not worried about viruses or the like.

Is there a way, say using "about:config" or the equivalent, to deal with this? If so, a huge thank you in advance!

    Thak you.

  2. Even the folks here, at Puppy Linux, and SCUMMVM, well, if not for them it would be a COMPLETE disaster. Right now on that ancient Sony using K-Mellon I can watch Youtube videos directly, in MP4- something not possible before. There are other things as well.

There is a SWF game called "Norby" which for some weird reason needs 1.2 GB RAM to run- can't be done, even with that "boost RAM" trick I see everywhere (it never works). But in Puppy Linux mode after boosting the equivalent of Virtual RAM it works. And again, while slow, as long as it's in XP mode one CAN do everything at Deviantart.com courtesy of the browsers here. If anyone knows of a way to boost the speed using it via WINE in Puppy Linux mode or a non-demanding browser capable of handling Deviantart.com it would be appreciated.

  3. In Deviantart.com the main culprit for it being so sloooowwwwwwww is something called "static.parastorage.com." Problem is, without it the site acts as if on an older browser. You cannot Comment, Reply, the site is a weird mess, etc.

I contacted the Deviantart staff about the fact Notes are not working. They said I'm using an outdated browser. I told them I was using Firefox 100. The reply to that? Firefox 100 is indeed outdated as now it's...Firefox 102. Ooooo, didn't know my version was so ancient.

I'm convinced. There really is a weird conspiracy to make the Internet a miserable frustrating experience. Or maybe it's "Idiocracy," which in turn was based on a 1951 short story called "The Marching Morons." I honestly don't know any longer, but the Internet did work much better in 2010 than now.

  4. I'm not sure how extensively I've gone into this here- memory isn't too good these days as it's been a TERRIBLE time- but the main problem older hardware has lately for me is the stupid and ugly Wix Deviantart.com site design.

Long story short: It all used to work nicely, even with older browsers and devices. Desktop/Mobile, etc. all right there.

But now? For people who seem to have liberal leanings they do not seem to care how this crummy new site design leaves poor people out in the cold and requires yet more hardware to end up in Third World landfills. If not for the people here at MSFN and their modified browsers an old Sony I have would have no way of handling that site, and even so it is rather slow- but still 10001% better than not at all!

    Even with eMatrix...

But thanks to eMatrix I have singled out the problem. It is something called "static.parastorage.com." This is what makes everything work so slooooowwwwwwlyyy there. Problem is, without it any browser acts as an older one: Messed-up screen, inability to Comment and Reply, etc.

What- if anything- is to be done about this?

And where are the new browser posts? I can't find them and my links no longer work, they have been moved.

    Thank you.

  5. How would I go about changing the BIOS? I've seen downloaded files that are supposed to do that, but I prefer to trust this site.

Its BIOS is X55A.413 according to DXDIAG. Its processor is Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU B980 @ 2.4 GHz (2 CPUs).

So far I've gotten Windows XP running with Virtualbox. The big accomplishment there, if you want to call it that, is the game "Tanktics" now works- well, I like it.

The idea here is to get a game called "Delores Thimbleweed Park" running. For some reason that DOS-style game has the most outrageous specs I've ever run into myself- even the acid trip game "The Sparkle: Evo 2" doesn't have anything like it.

I'll never understand why people program games with engines needing such high specs when it is not necessary. All they are doing is reducing their potential customer base, and judging by the comments Steam still has quite a few Windows 7 users. Maybe you know?

  6. Hello.

I'm trying to get Windows 10 64-Bit running on Virtualbox on a Windows 8 64-Bit ASUS X55A laptop.

Problem is, all I get are the 32-Bit options, including Windows 10. This Virtualbox is the most recent.

I've tried a number of things but have yet to get those options. I HAVE successfully gotten XP 32-Bit running, so I have that part down.

Online advice includes activating some sort of "Virtual Hardware" option in the BIOS/UEFI (or something like that), but that option is nowhere to be found.

Can anyone help me with this? I do NOT want to actually make Windows 10 the host Operating System here!

    Thanks.

  7. Although the Puppy Linux problem is still there- running the modified browsers with WINE takes much too long with Deviantart.com- it works well within tolerable limits in XP mode on that ancient Sony.

So the people here managed to overcome the stupidity and inefficient actions of people out to complicate things for older hardware. This proves that with good software old hardware need not be obsolete.

That is a real accomplishment. Thanks from anyone with older hardware unable to "upgrade," and keep up the good work.

  8. Sorry about leaving that out- that Sony is Windows XP Home Edition. It also has 32MB video RAM, although SwiftShader may add to that, given how often it solves "C0000005" error messages.

Funny thing- I downloaded Beetlebug 3 and tried to run it. Failure, not uncommon with that Sony. Dropped in SwiftShader, game worked but was too clumsy to play well due to not-so-good frame rate. Set it to "windowed" mode as usual (default was "fullscreen"), shut it down, then on a hunch tried again without SwiftShader- game works great. It crashes in fullscreen mode clearly, and without SwiftShader there would have been no way to get it running- I could not find a way to manually set it.

It has been a bad week. My mother died from covid. Yesterday I had to make the funeral arrangements, and the medical bills may wipe me out. I'm not really able to concentrate too well, I guess. How could I have left out something that basic?

  9. Sorry for the delay, but I was quarantined with covid, then occupied with trying to keep everything together here- not to mention static with a hospital, and how I was essentially told a relative was dead when she wasn't. Then it got...weird. I've been rather busy...

Well, the title isn't quite accurate- one game, "Elementals: The Magic Key" does work.

In order to get that game working one must use SwiftShader 2.1. Once that's dropped into the game folder it works nicely.

A similar-looking game, "Mystery of Mortlake Mansion," gives the same error messages as "Elementals" if SwiftShader is not there, but it does not work- the icon appears on the bottom bar, you can get the frame, but the only other thing is that all icons on the desktop shimmer. That's it.

The other games from this company also need SwiftShader, but there is a problem: images are out of alignment, apparently down and left. Random clicking indicates the games work, but they are "hidden object" games so they are unplayable. These games include "Farmscapes," "Fishdom," "Gardenscapes 1 & 2," and "Gardenscapes Mansion Makeover." The latter three have a dog that reminds me of one I used to have.

Using SwiftShader with the Dell or the mighty ASUS- both of which can properly handle "Gardenscapes" by itself without any help- creates the same problem. If there is an answer with 3D-Analyze I do not know what it is.

I will attach images to show what I mean.

Sony: 2001 VAIO, Pentium 3 800MHz processor, 16/24 Bit Color, DirectX 9 installed according to DXDIAG (note that SwiftShader handles this when used), 1024h x 768v resolution (same as Dell), Intel Integrated chip. Last known drivers installed.

As you can see some things are properly placed, but the first one should have many more things in it. It seems as though XML files determine where things will be placed. Altering the numbers (there are hundreds) only affects a few items, like on the title screen. Notice how the title screen when loading looks normal, but when the bar is complete how everything shifts. The house should have images of rooms in the windows, but as you can see...again, down and left.

Any help here? This is literally one of the only competent sites I know of.

By the by- where is the "My Browser Builds" thread?

    Experimental Features
    ---------------------

Note: There is a PET file which will install a form of OpenGL in Puppy Linux but it makes things run HOPELESSLY slow. If there is another way to do this I do not know of it.

Overall, the above does not look very promising. However, even at my level of skill I've found ways to get a number of things running that never would run: with 3D-Analyze, SwiftShader 2.0/2.1, ScummVM (which needs SwiftShader 2.1), and Puppy Linux roughly two dozen games and an app run.

So you never know. It's worth a try.

  11. I'm afraid I'm not sure what to think or do here? If it's just a file can I download it directly? Where exactly do I put it- in the browser folder with the EXE file? Does it work on a Pentium 3 (no SSE2 instruction set!) device? Is there a particular version needed?

  12. On 9/3/2021 at 7:26 PM, j7n said:

For me WebGL works fine at reasonable resolutions and simple games like the sci-fi racing in New Moon 28 and nVidia GT 610, with webgl.disable-angle true. As long as the display driver has good OpenGL it should work.

Why would you expect satisfactory experience of 3D without harware acceleration, translating opengl to direct3d while running JavaScript on an old CPU? Intel 8xx and 9xx Graphics had awful performance with native full-screen 3D games.

That's the whole point I've been trying to make- hardware acceleration DOES exist and DOES work on that old Sony!

The curious part is that it is not always there. For example, it absolutely is there for "Bejeweled 1-2" and "Plants Vs. Zombies." But for others it isn't. The checkbox in any of the Firefox browsers is always checked by default for "hardware acceleration."

I'm simply looking to get WebGL games working, I know it would be slow. That's not the point, just getting it running is.

There are ample 3D games that work nicely on that old laptop.

What I want to know is how to return browsers using WebGL to normal. My tinkering messed it up somewhat, how to get it back to default- and how to absolutely get a browser to actually use SwiftShader?

  13. Well, I tinkered around some with the ABOUT:CONFIG settings on Palemoon 28 and a version of Firefox 45 ESR along with SwiftShader 2.1 and 3.0 and did end up with, shall we say, curious results.
First I tried using 3D-Analyze but this did absolutely nothing one way or the other. It seems to be a dead end, neither positive nor negative.
    Then SwiftShader.
SwiftShader was originally meant to help people with computers that did not have proper graphics chips or cards. Version 2.1 has three files: "d3d8.dll," d3d9.dll," and "SwiftShader.ini;" you simply copy these three files into the game or program folder where the EXE file is.
What SwiftShader does is act as a sort of graphics card. It intercepts a game's rendering calls and handles them itself- since it's software-based this can slow things down but it can get many things working, usually within acceptable levels. A partial list of things it has gotten running on the 2001 Sony includes the SCUMMVM app (so "Foxtail," "LOOM," and "MYST" are covered), "Deepica" and the "Plumeboom" games, "Elementals the Magic Key," the three "Sprill" games, "Farm Frenzy," "Ancient Wonderland," "Fiber Twig Midnight Puzzle," Steam's "Inherit the Earth," and "Wizard's Spell Deadly Curse." Obviously it's not a cure-all but it can and has covered DirectX 8 and 9 problems as well as OpenGL.

    Seeing this line in ABOUT:CONFIG

    webgl.renderer-string-override

I changed it from a blank to the location of the SwiftShader "d3d9.dll" file which was placed in the browser's folder.

    C:\Users\GusCE6\Downloads\00_New Browsers\palemoon-28.10.3a1.win32-git-20210626-c9bf62e0b-uxp-a0461e377-xpmod-sse\palemoon\d3d9.dll

SO- open up the file for the offline WebGL game "HexGL" racing game, and try it out.
It worked- sort of. It was all there except the actual track (this game is floating in the sky above the clouds), which seemed to be hovering far overhead- so you were in effect on an invisible track. The track was there, you just couldn't see it. The clouds and buildings seemed to be where they belong. I figured that was the result of the game not playing entirely nice with SwiftShader.
And that was not an illogical assumption. The Playrix "Gardenscape" games, among the others, only work on the Sony with SwiftShader but most of the objects are down to the lower left corner so they are unplayable- only "Elementals the Magic Key" works properly. So why not here?
Then it got interesting. Very interesting.
Doing this with the same browser in the same way on the Sony had absolutely no effect whatsoever. It was still "WEBGL NOT SUPPORTED." Hmmm- curious. This happened both in XP and Puppy Linux 5.2.5 Lucid modes.
The "SwiftShader.ini" file gives you a number of settings, including the ability to disable rendering altogether- you'd get a blank screen. But no setting change had any effect with the ASUS. Becoming suspicious, I replaced the "d3d9.dll" file with the 3.0 version which, being a Demo, has the SWIFTSHADER logo in the corner- nothing. So I removed the SwiftShader files altogether.
Nothing changed. Nothing whatsoever. The game still had that same weird problem. SwiftShader never did anything apparently, rather it was the act of simply pointing the rendering elsewhere that did it.
Changing the ABOUT:CONFIG settings back to normal did nothing, and restarting the computer now after the title screen and the controls screen all you get is a blank screen. No sounds, it never gets to the game.
So try an earlier version of Firefox 45 ESR, it works fine- try the one I tested it's back to that weird track-in-the-skies-high-above effect. Palemoon 28 still has the blank screen never reaches the game because I haven't tried an earlier or later version yet.

Note that I tried "Colorzzle" on Armor Games with Palemoon 28 and it seems to work normally. That offline racing game still does not work, though. That is strange since it works with any browser not tinkered around with.

I use these browsers for testing, and the ASUS is mighty hard to foul up. I also have everything backed up, so a hard reset is no big deal. Since it is a Dual-Boot system I can go into Puppy Linux mode if need be, and on the ASUS 90+% of Windows programs and games will run courtesy of WINE.

All right- how do you get things back to normal with a given browser for WebGL, and how do you actually get them to use SwiftShader? If rendering is the problem and the Sony's hardware is not blacklisted then at least in theory it should work.

Technical Specifications for 2001 Sony: Intel Integrated Chip, Pentium 3 Processor 800MHz, 16/24 Bit Color, 1024h x 768h resolution, DXDIAG claims DirectX 9 installed and the spinning cube tests all work, so there it is I guess.

  14. Is it true that WebGL needs a 64-Bit system to work? If so, then that's the problem and barring some technical wizardry one that cannot be solved.

I tried a downloaded WebGL program on the somewhat superior 2002 Dell, which has a GeForce2 Go graphics chip and a Pentium 4 processor. The WebGL game fails to work on it, too. It is another XP device. It, like the Sony, is 32-Bit. Only the ASUS is 64-Bit and only the ASUS can run it. An equivalent Flash game- "Ion Drift Racer"- works fine on the Sony and does not require nearly as much power.

Once people begin to realize that cross-browser compatibility and browser upgrades (i.e. changes) can cause a game to fail they will miss Flash with its single standard and the fact that after years, or even two decades, you could count on it working.

Your computer is Pentium3 + Intel 815 chipset. This means that it only support DirectX7.0 \ OpenGL1.2

Official minimum system requirements to run a webGL is much higher. You demand to much from 20 year old computer.

Your old video card has hardware support of DirectX 9.0b \ OpenGL 2.0 and have 4 pixel shader. This things are minimum necessary to do this job.

GusCe6 video card is built-in Intel from year 2000 and does not have such advanced functions.

Well, DirectX 9.0c games DO work on it. And if push comes to shove one can try SwiftShader 2.1, which has gotten other programs running (it enables DirectX 9 and OpenGL 2.0). It intercepts calls and in effect acts as a sort of alternate video card. You could also try 3D-Analyze for something. Assuming you are right about that being the problem would trying to run a browser in this way enable it to work?

But this irritates me in more ways than you can guess. Obviously the ASUS can handle anything the Internet cares to throw at it, but poor people are out of luck- again. When Flash-SWF was the standard for this sort of thing (e.g. "Colorzzle" demo) there was no problem for people stuck with older devices- the ONLY SWF game that has ever failed to run on that Sony is "Norby," and that could be a RAM issue (although "Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows" SWF runs just fine, as do "Plants vs. Zombies" and "Cubis Creatures").

All because of Steve Jobs' sour grapes.

  16. Whenever trying a WebGL game like "Colorzzle" online with a browser like "Basilisk 52" on the XP Sony I always get an error message stating that the browser cannot handle WebGL.

However, on the ASUS the same exact browser does. As do others.

Is it the limited hardware (e.g. SSE2), or the fact that neither XP nor Puppy Linux 5.2.5 Lucid can handle it? If so, is there a safe way to get it running?

    Thank you.

  17. I have tried Deviantart again with Basilisk 52, this time with Windows XP.  This library has wifi that DOES allow use of XP.

Still slow, but well within tolerable levels. There is no doubt that extension that filters out unwanted servers and aspects is a big help.

The problem is clearly that in Puppy Linux mode "heavy" websites that are very demanding- as well as demanding SWF files offline- causes trouble. However, while in XP mode the Deviantart problem is solved. The people here are actually doing something to prevent waste and more pollution by keeping older systems going, and I want to be one of them.

Someone here has suggested that the old laptop can in fact handle 512 MB RAM. I do not know if he is right, but if he is right then it will absolutely be a huge help. In fact, if it turns out that he is right and a laptop the manufacturer itself- Sony- is wrong and it can be boosted beyond the normal 256 MB limit then this website should have a listing of devices and their true upper limits. If this person is right then he must be given full credit for the idea.

    Thank you all here.

  18. I have tried that plugin to filter out unwanted sites and the results on Deviantart.com have been very disappointing so far- except for one thing. This was with Basilisk 52 SSE and Firefox 45 ESR SSE.

I do not know what "static.parastorage.com" is used for, but it is absolutely the problem. You cannot filter out any aspect of it, and if you simply exclude it you cannot Reply, Comment, Journal, or Literature- which means you're better off using Palemoon 27. That server ONLY seems to do something once you are logged in, which would explain why things seem to work better with offline testing.

I cannot test one aspect because when you scroll down it tries to scroll back up- endlessly.

When that server is involved it makes everything hopelessly slow on old hardware.

UPDATE: If you could leave out the static.parastorage.com's CSS files it loads much faster but it scrolls back up by itself. You can block this site, but blocking its elements will cause trouble. If not for the self-scrolling it would work.

The way I see it there are two options, assuming I can ever get started on this sort of thing:

    1) Cook up a non-proxy browser that acts like Opera Mini able to handle these things- not easy I'd imagine.

    2) Modify Palemoon 27 juuuussssst enough to deal with Deviantart.

  20. Once I gain any any talent in recompiling browsers (ain't going to happen if I don't get some starter instructions and help) there are a number of things I'd like to try:

    1) Don't woryy about the ASUS and working on browsers. I can assure you that will be NO problem, not for a laptop that can run "World of Tanks" with library wifi on best settings- on a USB stick.

    2) My goal is to make old hardware useful again. THE main thing for most people would be a good browser able to do things on the Internet.

    3) One obvious thing to try would be a browser that acts like Opera Mini but is not a proxy browser. In this case it would also simply filter out anything the user wants to filter out, and this would include a document- say an XLM document- you would add things to, say "google analytics," whatever. My version would also include something like "*qualtrics.com" so if ANYTHING includes that last part it will be excluded- so making a dynamic random sequence will not work. It would not show anything animated, no videos, etc. UNLESS you click on it. A tag with "MP4" would appear telling you about such a thing, ideally if such a stream could be shunted through a standalone media player old devices could do it.

NOTE: This is not just a theory. Several years ago, using the ever-reliable ASUS, I isolated the streaming URL of "The Rockford Files"- MP4 AVC H.264 240p- plugged the url into the TCPMP Player on the crummy Windows CE netbook with its available 42MB RAM...and it worked perfectly. In that way the Sony could do better.

    4) Again, a way to get audio-only. On Twitch TV some streams do not go below 720p, once or twice I saw 1080p; there is NO POSSIBLE WAY that will ever work on an old laptop- for 1080p even the ASUS has trouble at that site- but audio-only? In theory at least should work. Twitch Radio vs. Nothing At All, not a difficult choice, no?

    5) My best bet is to first start working on simple modifications- getting my feet wet. By the way, it seems I was wrong, Palemoon 28 does not work fully with Deviantart, unless I am doing something wrong.

    Repeating myself:

I have tried that on Basilisk 52(?) on the ASUS.

Of course the ASUS itself can tackle anything Deviantart throws at it with a yawn, but using that add-on shows great promise. I have already seen that eliminating half+ of what is involved does NOT affect the site itself. On the Sony, assuming that add-on works in both XP and Puppy Linux modes (a big "if"), then that may well do it.

    Thank you! :)
