I have wasted too much time and effort in attempts at creating a computer capable of running Windows XP.
Does anyone here know if and where a complete machine alrady running XP, or guaranteed to run XP, may be obtained?
I experience more problems than acceptable on attempts at getting the desired result with the ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 motherboard. I actually haven't been able to make the motherboard run properly at all. I found it impossible to use a wired mouse - making it impossible to get further into the process of creating a useful system. Anyone know how to obtain better and more useful results? I believe my age is contributing to my problems. Just putting all the wires to the motherboard in place - and the right place as well, is much more difficult than before. I wish I just could buy a machine that would respond properly to installation of XP from a CD. The joy of partitoning or formatting of disks, without refusing to accept unformatted disks I have several used SSD's that are not accepted - I don't know why I don't have any of the disk utility programs that I used to have.
You could just buy from ebay/craigslist type of site? I mean if building one isn't an option.

i guess that's what I'll do too, even though the parts are not something I can reuse. I might to play around with some very very light distros

Not really wanted to start a new thread, I'll ask here, almost 3 years after the previous write up.
What are you doing with your rig once it finally dies or you stop running XP? I just inherited a laptop from the Vista days and I put XP on it. Runs great, but eventually it will die. I'm just looking to plan ahead a bit and know what I'll do with it.

I've been playing with a laptop and XP Pro. I wish I had done a POS thing before though.

Very alpha, like it's always been since its early roots dating back to the nineties trying to mimick Windows 95.
Yeah I watched a couple videos about it, from Druaga1 and ExplainingComputers. No the most up to date, but both very illustrative in their on ways. Linked here in case anyone else wants spend a couple minutes on that.

I'm pretending to be someone working for the IT of a company and I asked about an extension of the support period for Windows Embedded POSReady. They told me to call that number (UK), so if someone wants to call Microsoft and ask them, feel free to call them out of curiosity. I'll call them as soon as I'll have time.
A for effort for sure. Well done.

After a fresh install I'm still hunting down some drivers. Thankfully wifi worked after installing the driver, so everything else has been easier once I got internet access working on it. https://i.imgur.com/Uz5s3PD.png

That's why I recommend using both. I haven't used any version of Windows as my main OS since December 2005. I have Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 8.1 all running in VMs (I use VirtualBox). One of the advantages of doing this is that I don't have to use Windows 8.1 any more than necessary, which is good because I don't like using it. I'd much rather use Windows XP. I also don't have to worry about looking for newer hardware that is still compatible with Windows XP since I'm not trying to run it on "bare metal".

That's a good solution. I run Arch as my main system, but if I was still on XP or needed to use it, I could very well do that. I have an old machine I might turning into an XP machine just for fun as a side project and see where it leads me.

maybe the way i do things is just different but I don't have to do TLS, I just go to ctrl panel and set automatic updates to notify me but dont download or install. and that always works. The only time i have problems with windows updates on XP is when I installed Office hotfixes. auto updates don't use TLS. then again i use addon in nlite to update windows installs.
Yeah I think this is for when you go seeking the updates instead of letting them come to you.. I also used WSUS one time and it also worked great.

Are you trying to install from a USB? If so, try WinToFlash.
Also give this thread a read, the third to last comment helped me get over this exact problem. Thread here: https://wintoflash.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46

Glad to see you accomplished your purpose with USP4.
For the record though, in case anyone else has issues:I actually just finished working with a fresh XP SP3 install and Windows Update. Despite reports to the contrary WU still works with IE6.
Install the three packages listed as "Needed for Windows Update" listed here. Then enable TLS in IE6 Internet Options. Now WU should work properly.
Can confirm it works. Thanks!

Businesses take forever and a day to implement anything new (or different), so I don't think they'll switch just like that. Regular folks could go to Apple but the entry barrier is high ($$$). And Linux is amazing, but most normal folks don't even know what it is, and it does take a lot more personal involvement to have a system that works as users intend it to (how to install apps, some apps might not have a native linux app, finding alternatives, etc.). For the regular user I think ChromeOS (in chromebooks) is a much bigger thread to Microsoft than Apple or any of the many Linux distros. In education Chromebooks are already huge and Microsoft is trying to get into that market again with what will be Windows Lite (I think?).
