been using firefox for a long time now, and i've heard opera is nice too
either of these are what i would advise for any 98 user
i only use ie for the odd site which won't cooperate with the other browser
(and windows update, such as it is now)
ie6 is really old now, ie7 should have been out years ago
i browse with a lot off windows open at once and have been using tabbed browser shells because of this since i first discovered them (myie - myie2 (now maxthon) - firefox )
truth is if i had as many ies open as i have tabs open in firefox most of the time the OS would grind to a halt

it's worth noting that QuickTime Alternative + RealPlay Alternative install the xp version of mpc and not the 98me build so it's probably best to drop the newest version from the sourceforge site over the one they install
link - http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303
ps. i think the included one is out of date anyway since the release of 6.4.9.0

they are bitmaps in EXPLORER.EXE and BROWSEUI.DLL

i need some recommendations about DVDR DVDRW/RAM software on 98se.
which (if any) would you recommend ?
i'm thinking of buying a (bare) drive.
doesn't need to be drag and drop with the RW ones.

i noticed , but at least it's a start if nothing else
(and there might be a few programmers drifting around who would take a look )0 -

are there any mirrors of this pack ?, i've tried rapidshare but i keep getting 'invalid session' repeatedly (with both IE and firefox)

well one good reason would be related to which OS (or OSs) someone else might actually legally own (ahem )

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
recently i've been mucking around with ffdshow and you need this C++ Redistributable for some of the latest compiles going around, so i downloaded & installed it and afaik (so far) it works just fine on 98SE.
this is the non-beta version release date 4/10/2006
just thought i'd mention it as no one else has (afaik) . . .

IMHO:
It is probably very difficult to implement necessary API code into 9x system files to make QTM7 run properly under 98SE/ME.
As far as I know QTM7 depends in part on WMP10 new APIs for HD-WMD/HD-WMV video/audio + AC3 [Dolby Digital]surround sound. And these WMP10 APIs can be used [unfortunately] only on XP [and likely on 2003 + Vista].
And in turn, HD/DD APIs from WMP10 depend on XP/2003/Vista core + system files and DX 9.0c APIs [like DirectSound, NetShow], which are specific only to XP/2003/Vista.
i believe there may be some other options

http://www.elecard.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?t=573(May 5, 2005) You may have noticed that Apple's QuickTime Player 7 is available for download. As of this writing, the player is only available for Mac OS X, and the latest QuickTime files are only viewable on that platform. That is, unless you are using an FFmpeg-derived multimedia application. Thanks to dedicated multimedia hackers from the FFmpeg and x264 projects, FFmpeg's libavcodec can already decode the next-generation (buzzword alert!) H.264 video codec data inside the latest Apple QuickTime files. Along with the free, open source FAAD AAC decoding library (for the audio track) and a competent QuickTime file demuxer, open source software is already equipped to handle the newest multimedia files on the internet. The Elecard MP4 Demultiplexer is a DirectShow filter that provides demultiplexing MPEG-4 (Intermedia Format (MP4)), 3GPP2, Quick Time 7.0 streams with MPEG-4, H.263, AVC/H.264 video streams and AAC, AMR, MP3 audio streams.0 -

avarage computers don't 'live' five years lol
theoretically soild modern state electronics have an infinite lifespan
there are companys around with systems which were built before windows was even thought of,
my Amigas and Atari ST are around 24-25 years old and my earliest Nintendo console 19
my current TV was 'born' in 1976 (sony's first remote controlled trinitron i believe)
making it 30 years old this year.
i feel sorry for the younger generation sometimes,
some are more than a little brain washed into being ever the constant consumers methinks . . .
on Firefox, traditionally open source projects usually try to support as many OS platforms as possible,
ans (as the end users) we should encourage 9X platform support (alongside NT5) as much as possible imo

if you download wmp10, extract it with say 7-zip (or something)
you can use the 9 series default skin (9SeriesD.wmz) in wmp9 on 98se in skin mode.
this skin has the darker blue XP coloring.
the only other difference internally between it and the 9x default one is the copyright info.
btw one of the best skins for wmp9 on 98se imo is this one -
http://theskinsfactory.com/sfadmin/files/W...r%20Edition.wmz
which has two colour modes, is 'official microsoft' and despite the name is aimed at 98se (xp gets the 'enhanced' version of this same skin)
a lot of wmp9 skins have some problems with transparency on 98se in my experience.

here http://www.crashcoursesoftware.com/
click 'download software'
try 'Custom Logon Interface'
also i believe you might be able to set separate logon wallpapers and
screen savers in the registry which could be interesting to fiddle with

everybody likes some new functionality right ?
i've discovered that if you install the MS paint filter pack from MDGxs site (GRPHFLTS.EXE)
TGA thumbnails will start to work !
very cool if you work with various game engines (Quake, HL etc)
where this image format is used for textures & skins

thanks, but thats the most common answer out on the web but it doesn't work in 98SE,
you get a 'Missing entry:Options_RunDLL' error
in 98 (& 95 i think) i have a hunch its called through explorer.exe
though parts are also contained in SHDOC401.DLL & BROWSEUI.DLL
3 CLSIDs are referenced through the registry when the dialog is opened
{EF8AD2D1-AE36-11D1-B2D2-006097DF8C11} Global Folder Settings (BROWSEUI.DLL)
{6D5313C0-8C62-11D1-B2CD-006097DF8C11} Folder Options Property Page Extension (SHDOC401.DLL)
{B091E540-83E3-11CF-A713-0020AFD79762} File Types Page (SHDOC401.DLL)

You can run both versions of java at once.
wouldn't that cause conflicts ?

i have a few disjointed 98SE questions so feel free to jump in if you can help in any way
1. does PLUSTAB.DLL (which produces the 'Effects' tab in 'Display Properties') and is 24kb contain any more functionality beyond manipulating registry entries? i want to know if i could safely remove it.
2. does anyone understand the function/use of the 'Mask' regstery key you can use in places like
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions
and could they share what they know ? (any info or links very much appreciated)
3. My right click 'New' menu has stopped adding new items to itself when it should, the ShellNew keys are there (where needed) the file types show up in TweakUI, just not on the right click 'New' menu, if fact it seems the menu won't show anything beyond the 'default set' (text doc, wordpad doc, bmp, wave sound, MS data link) i'm sure i've read about this problem before and there's a way to fix it but i can't remember what it is. sound familiar ?
4. anyone know of any guides to installing Suns java on a 98SE machine instead on MSs,
is this a good idea ? (it's more up to date) and will it work OK in both IE and Firefox ?
5. about user.exe and user32.dll,
on a 98SE machine (where the owner doesn't have WinMe) 4.90.3001 from the ME280800.EXE update can be used in place of the 98SE ones and i've seen this recommended a few times (i think MDGx did once).
what advantages/disadvantages (if any) are there in using these files with a standard 98se (plus SP 2.1a) install as opposed to the 4.10.2231 Win98se versions from 291362usa8.exe (which i've seen Gape saying contains at least 9 different bug-fixes) beyond the shutdown screen not showing up ?
do the WinMe files contain the same fixes as the 291362 files ?
i think i vaguely remember something said about LFNs :s as well . . .
6. the great lost shortcutting syntax mystery of windows 98
two secrets have been lost to the mists of time, do you know the answer ?
A. how do you create a shortcut (or command line) to "Folder Options" in windows 98SE ?
i'm sure i used to know, but i can't remember i think it might be called through explorer.exe (but that's just a hunch)
finding this out would possibly allow the total hiding of the setting menu on the start menu without losing functionality and/or the possible creation of a 'Folder Options' shortcut or even a Control Panel entry.
B. how do you link to system folders inside Webview .htt files without using external scripting ?
(putting a simple link into the webview to open a system folder like my computer or the contol panel when clicked)
i'm almost 100% sure this used to work, the problem is all the answers that are 'out there' don't actually work.
there are simple webviews up on Virtual Plastic (without .vbs or .wsh files to help) which rely on specific syntaxes but the links in them just don't seem to work anymore, i believe it's possible the fuctionality may have been removed from 98SE in a security update.
needless to say if a working syntax could be cornered it would be possible to easily jazz up the existing webview with something resembleing common tasks or at least common places.
as i understand it this fuctionality is in WinMe, and i believe MDGx rewrote some webview .htts specifically to work in 98SE2ME, i would really like a look at the 98SE2ME htts MDGx if you read this if that would be alright, just to try out the shortcuttting syntax used in those files on vanilla 98SE.
thanks for reading,
once again ANY help, links, tips, info at all related to these questions will be hugely appreciated.
miko.

might be an idea to remove them both and extract a new copy via sfc.exe in case of viruses or something (kinda weird to end up with two)

press CTRL NUMPAD + in Details view
theres a tip . . .
0 -
try unchecking 'Always show keyboard indicators' in the 'General' tab of Tweak UI
i believe unchecked is the default state in win2k
i think the 'boxes' might be able to be altered with "FocusBorderHeight" and "FocusBorderWidth" (dword values) @
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop (the default is 0x00000001)
i tried a value of 0x00000000, but it didn't work (for me, on 98se)

seconded
an unoffical SP2 for IE6 (and the equivalent for 5.5) 98SE is whats required (imo)
