  1. i was just going to post that :)

and no, i don't know the meaning of the negative numbers.

(although i suspect they might wrap around the number of icons in a file, if you know what i mean)

despite the fact that the default is #0100

the syntax seems to follow #0000 for the 1st icon but #0002 for the 2nd and so on

paths are also valid, so for example having this in the "Icon" key

    C:\Program Files\PLUS!\SP\test.icl#0003

will show the third icon in the test.icl

this tool will enble you to change the zone icons (amongst other things)

    "Toolbar Control" - http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/down_app.html

so you could probably sus it out with a scan of the registry before and after like you did before,

once you've decided where your going to site the .icl and setup the icons (perhaps using the above tool),

all we really need are the correct exported registry entries right ?

to rebuild the icon cache, sometimes, tweakUI doesn't hack it,

in fact i've been told theres a bug in it and it can corrupt the icon cache,

    although i don't know if that's correct.

personlly i tend to use the "Rebuild" option in "Change Icon" from http://home.nordnet.fr/~pmdevigne/ more

    (nice little program that)

or i just delete the icon cache and log on and off to have it rebuilt.

    PS. please read this -

    http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/icn_reg.html

    whats next ?

  2. Gape,

thanks for clearing that up, i liked all that you said,

nice to see your thinking along those lines.

    - I haven't found a good patching tool.

    - Changing icons w/o modifying files doesn't look good as Petr explained above, (and there's lots of icon references on the registry).

please (if you have the time) pm me a list of patchers you've tried and i'll see if i can find an alternative you can use,

i assume you'd be looking for something free, small, redistributable with a commandline, correct ?

as for the icons i'm working on that...

like i said before, love all your work

    :thumbup

    Tihiy,

sorry if it came across like that, Fredledingue was p***ing me off,

so i was hot and bothered, i like your stuff, i just don't think personally

it should be in the SP, you should also imo (to avoid legal issues) redistribute

them as a binary patches of some kind to be applied to copys of preexisting files,

that's all i can say, once again sorry.

    :blushing:

    Fredledingue,

i'm not even going to bother,

except to say that XP sales don't concern me,

    i'm just the tea boy.

    ;)

heres the homepage of that "Trojan" -

apparently its not, it actually fights them.

  3. this might be stating the obvious but you can change the mycomp, mydoc, network and recycle bin icons from Display Properties>Effects

i change almost all mine through the registry now, the only annoying one (for me) is "Folder Options" on the start menu which is the same icon as "Windows Explorer" and is contained in EXPLORER.EXE, yes it is easier in some ways to get them to all to change at once by hacking shell32.dll & explorer (i originally used to use this method, but there are alot of icons in shell32.dll and it's a pain to do them all at once) plus you can't really distribute your work.

    Desktop Architect v2.11

is a handy tool (don't let it run at startup, and remove the non-working Display Properties extension dadesk.dll)

there are others but this oldie is a goodie.

i'll look at the affected registry entrys when i get come back and edit this post,

i want to nail this down myself as i want to export the icon set i've been working on a long time.

i'd prefer it to be a simple .reg file and an .icl (icon library)

right now i have to go for dinner....

    :)

    miko

PS i think the CLSID ones are the defaults used when the ones in "Shell Icons" have been changed (think Plus! pack themes etc) you need the defaults to be able to return it to normal.

i know how to change the "My Computer" icon in the bottom you speak of, it's one of the "internet zone icons" and has a differerent location in the registry (its related to ie)

    back soon...

  4. @ Fredledingue

post me link to the open source windows code, in fact any source code for any MS files.

    anyone ?

i haven't resorted to this before, but you, my son, are talking sh*t.

if you want open source go Linux, but what the hell, i can tell i'm dealing with a child,

more life experience, and less staring at a CRT is what you need.

Gape's in Turkey, is a new EU member state, so can't enjoy the quite the same lawlessness you can.

and "compiling updates from M$ website" is exactly what he said he was doing, and there's no "merely" about it,

as has been seen, it's dam complicated, too complicated.

BTW i work for Microsoft UK.

    (although not as a coder).

my original post wasn't a critique, i was just raising my concerns.

i said three files were unnessecery hacked in 1.6.2, which they were.

and later was inferring that Tihiy & Dr. Hoiby's should not be used,

both perfectly reasonable opinions, which some of you seem to have taken issue with.

but i guess when your dealing with some people whom bearly understand half of what your writing

you need to make things a little less complicated so please see the pic attached below.

    edited - for Petr

open the quicklaunch shortcut in notepad and you see this -

    [shell]

    Command=2

    IconFile=explorer.exe,3

    [Taskbar]

    Command=ToggleDesktop

change the IconFile line to anything you want.

start a topic in the lower forum and i'll guide you through more if you want.

  5. posting temper tantrums on the forums.

everyone has their right to an opinion, but i did not resort to name calling or deformation of anyone's character,

you may not like the look of a 'longer' posts, but i consider all the points i raised fair...

  6. well gee, when the most popular tool for doing icon and bmp replacements inside PE files is called Resource Hacker, i've been doing them myself privately with various tools since '96, and most of the people i'm talking about can check with a hex compare against the original versions, i call them a hack.

whats more, none of these files really need to be hacked to achive most of the effects wished, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons

could easily be changed with a reg file to alter almost all the system icons with no effect on resource use and 98SE can go up to 24bit color icons without the need for any file editing.

for the more advanced stuff open source software like tclock2 will allow you to change the start menu banner & start button graphics, 32bit icons and suchlike can be found in many explorer alternatives like those featured on sites like http://www.shellfront.org/ and http://www.desktopsidebar.com/ can even make your desktop look a little like Longhorn, all without altering any system files at all.

in reference to 891711 i will only refer to what i said before about it being uninstallable and therefore easily optional.

as for Dr. Hoiby's explorer hack, when you eventually start having that repeating explorer crash that you can't exit from try reverting to an unhacked version of the same explorer version.

some people still use the pack, but just drop in the original unhacked versions after install, they don't want files fiddled with by someone other than Microsoft, it's that simple, that is what they expect from a 'service pack', and it's also what Gape's site suggests as there is no mention of the fact that any system files are 'altered'.

it's just a pity that you would rather have me lie to people who already know what their dealing with rather than accept that such things should be, at least, optional addons rather than included in such a pack.

whatever you may say these files are hacked and i very much doubt a couple of Russian coders know more than the staff at the Microsoft campus and the owners of the source code, whatever loyaltys you may have to your friends i am not alone in the assumption.

i used my brother and mother simply as example users but don't try to patronise me, you have no idea who i may be, the simple fact is the distribution of hacked windows files is illegal, the redistribution of previously released MS patches is not. a fact that could very easily lead to the pack being removed from most mirrors and further action taken by Redmond.

i expect something to be better if it is an updated file supplied and supported my Microsoft and your attitude confirms my suspicions about what has happened to this projects original goals, it's now clouded in a sea of egos and i only hope Gape can see through it, as the final pack will be checked against the original Microsoft versions of the files included before posting on Slashdot begins.

    goodnight gentlemen.

  7. fair enough, but i know plenty of "customer systems" in the emulation community (DOS still has its uses) and others who thought this was a great thing, tried it and promptly done an about turn and reinstalled windows when they found out mydocs explorer and shell32 were all hacked for as they put it 'for no desernable reason', it somewhat ruins the point for me and the packs got a bad rap because of it, if you want cosmetic system hacks there's http://wint.virtualplastic.net/ & http://www.virtualplastic.net/ it's not a new thing, where as Gapes work (and stated aim) was unique and initially well received. as for your "corporate environment" & "Mission Critical systems" remarks neither is Win 98SE, why do you people want the pack full of more and more hacks ? kudos ? it's supposed to be (as far as i can see) a replacement for a MS service pack because one was never made (a noble cause), not a showcase for 1337 h4x0rs...

  8. Hi,

posted some stuff here a while ago, maybe more soon,

    anyway onto my point -

Coders like Tihiy should be encouraged, however, imo Gape's service pack would be a lot better when it hits final if it didn't contain any hacked files, as it is just now there are some that are optional and are hacked for icons and icon color support as i understand (i don't know why the icons aren't just done through registry entrys and say an .icl but i but i digress) to give you an example of why i think this should be, my brother is an IT guy who deals with alot of computers with 98se installed, my mom is responsable for a small school office which is full of 98se PCs. they are not currently using the service pack, but they would like to have the option (although i did show them it when it was at 1.6.2) the reason ? the hacks, it's that simple, they won't trust them, and, in a way, they can't trust them, not in a place of work. there are many computer users that understand things like using reshacker or experimenting with something like Me Defrag or the Me user.exe & user32.dll and suchlike and so will appreciate something like Tihiy's work. but there are many more who won't touch stuff they don't trust, and they don't trust file hacks, especially to windows system files (and i'm talking about many individual users here as well). windows 98se is still supported (and it's been extended a few times) because it still has a huge user base, a lot of whom are in small business or setups like my moms. these people don't have the money to upgrade all their software (or hardware) and so would love the easy solution to upgrades/patches Gape's pack might supply, and if it comes out like i hope it does when it hits final, i expect it to be posted at IT sites across the net and downloaded by millions.

Tihiy's stuff is cool, but should stay separate and optional (you should also get a hompage Tihiy)

all the above is just my opinion.

hope i haven't offended anyone, love all your work.

    :thumbup

    miko.

PS. 891711 is usually uninstallable from Add/Remove Programs, why not just keep that, then everyone could be happy, those that don't want it could uninstall it and use Tihiy's...

  9. im wondering if your could make an exe. so average joe could have them installed on click...

if u have other homemade program send them to my email addy on my website link below ill put them in my 98se appz section by miko etc..

i am working on a little site (learning HTML, etc) :blushing:

so hopefully will be posting any fully finished stuff there.

    exes are a possiblity,

i will probably get round to it in time.

i have no problems with anyone hosting any stuff however.

or anystuff being used anywhere else :D

    miko.

  10. some ppl can't afford to goto xp...

    amen to that,

i just checked dabs (one of the best online suppliers in uk)

and XP Home Edition with SP2 is £164.50

(thats about $383 canadian or $305 US)

i don't have a lot of money :blushing:

    my 98SE OEM cost me £60 with a £5 mouse :P

    all other software is free

(except the few games i've bought or been given)

98SE will do me for a while yet...

i'll skip 32 bit and go straight to 64

when intel and microsoft produce the right products

this way i can save up and go straight to PCI-E etc

  11. with above reg file, 2 minutes ago on WIN98SE.

    difference.png

this example shows two standard icons,

one from a program (IE6) and one from an XP extracted icon assigned to my docs,

    both show a difference/improvement in 24bit over 16,

the problem is not the setting but probably the icon format.

afaik 24bit icons are enabled and included in the 98SE plus pack as well...

  12. Second hack

Animated 640x480 boot logo (XP like) instead ugly 320x400. Cool? Oh, yes!

Now this hack is limited too - doesn't animate  .

I can write animating logo pure assembler so it won't consume conventional memory, but i need any fast&small graphical library for it.

    XP startups may be 640x480

    but they are 4bit

9X are 8bit and not that hard to make with XRX

seems alot or work for not much (2-3 sec) gain...

on icons, here's some stuff -

  13. Hi i'm kinda new around here

but i'm a big fan of Gape's 98se service pack and MDGx's site

    thank you guys :thumbup

i thought i share some stuff i haven't seen mentioned around,

    some links -

    http://wint.virtualplastic.net/

    http://www.virtualplastic.net/

    http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/

in a few posts i've seen people saying you need to go into dos and that to change some files when windows is running,

there is a much easier way (well 2 :))

one method is to use CopyLock

    tip -

the best way to use this is from a separate 'COPYLOCK' folder on the root of the drive with windows folder on it

(not a lot of files at once is a good idea too)

another even better way is to run more than one 9X install

(say one for working with, one for games) on separate partitions using AddAWins

after installing at least two you can boot between multiple 9X installs from icons on the startmenu

you can boot into one and alter the other then boot back...

tip - if you have 98SE and try this and get an memory error during the setup

try deleting smartdrv.exe from you 'approved boot disc'

    activex update locations...

and an old chestnut, placing a shortcut to REGSVR32.EXE in the WINDOWS/SendTo menu give a quick way register the odd dll or ocx

alternatively try Xteq COM Register Extension 2.1 (an .inf file for context menu entries)

right click l3codecp.inf and click 'Install'

    thats it.

you can also uninstall from the usual places

this codec is fast (which is good for slower machines)

and in my experience, wmp9 will not

automatically download an inferior version if the

'Download codecs automatically' setting is enabled.

the following bitrates are setup for encoding

and can be selected from the four 'Audio quality'

settings in WMP9 (btw WMP10 apparently doesn't do 160 kBps)

    64 kBps @ 22.050 Hz

    128 kBps @ 44.100 Hz

    160 kBps @ 44.100 Hz

    192 kBps @ 44.100 Hz

all encoding is 'joint stereo' by default,

(and cannot be changed via the GUI )

this is the same as WMP10 in XP.

album title, song name, artist, etc

can be downloaded and added to ID3 tags

    automatically.

files will be named inline with the downloaded info

and your selection of settings in WMP9 at

Tools > Options > Copy Music > Copy music to this location >

    'File Name'.

mp3s will be placed in folders named by album

in 'My Music' inside 'My Documents' by default.

however you can change this in WMP9 via

Tools > Options > Copy Music > Copy music to this location >

    'Change'.

    D.A.E.

afaik digital audio extraction can be enabled as follows :

    1. your CD-ROM and sound card should be

correctly connected with the correct lead.

    2. in 'Multimedia Properties' in the 'Control

Panel' on the 'CD Music' tab, select the correct CD-ROM

from the drop down list and tick the checkbox for

'Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device.'.

    3. in WMP9 go to Tools > Options > Devices

select your CD-ROM, then click the 'Properties' button

here you can fine tune your CD-ROM playback & copying.

for digital extraction you should probably select

    'Digital' and 'Use error correction'.

  15. these posts have been edited - i posted the folder.htt, but it was to long on the page (its only 16KB though)

    edited - updated/bug fixes feb 5 2005 'new' web.zip below.

this is a small updated commented easily understood/customized webview for WIN98SE

it requires ie6 and wmp9 and as such it uses new components/effects

    the download consists of a 16KB folder.htt & 3 tiny gifs

backup your original folder.htt in WINDOWS\WEB and drop the contents of the zip in to try it out in any folder

it has few neat extra features (well 1 maybe :P the rest is mostly tweaks/bug fixes)

and is 100% javascript and html with no external dependencies beyond those of the original

(media player, the thumbnail control etc)

its supports the following filetypes -

(most are the same as the original, any interesting additions are underlined)

    htm, html

all the image formats ie6 can (i think)

avi, mov, qt, mpe, mpeg, mpg, wmv, swf

aif, aifc, asx, au, m1v , mpa, mp3, snd, wav, wma, m3u, wpl

mid, midi, rmi (and any other wmp9 formats you'd care to add)

    txt

if you alter PARAM NAME="enableContextMenu" from VALUE="false" to VALUE="true"

you will get a right click context menu on the media player preview that will,

among other things, display file details and allow you to go full screen

btw changing the "autostart" function will lock the file,

and will restrict file renaming/moving, not recomended.

functionality is stll fine otherwise though, as the new control 'cues' the file.

    which imo is arguably better.

you can change your folder icons with Change Icon

(best used with .icl icon librarys managed with IconShop 1.20 Alpha

here is htt file and images WEB.zip

here are the mydocs, mypics & mymusic icons in an .icl icon libraryFOLDERS.zip

  16. use notepad.

i do  (well metapad anyway)

this is the webview pane (pain) i am working on the above code along with a couple of other little bits to give a text preview in the iframe,

it works great except the font is the one specified in IE under Fonts > Plain text fonts, and it looks crap next to my chosen system font Tahoma,

what i want to do is choose the font and font size,

the code is correct, but there seems to be know way to affect the formatting of the output using css or html tags, yet the innnerHTML command should convert the plain text fed to it from the iframe into HTML, it's all IE specific (which doesn't matter becuase its the webview) i think because of document.all, anyway i've reached the limits of what i know so any help from HTML gurus would be greatly appreciated.

    </HTML>

does anyone know how to apply any kind of formatting to this (preferably font size and typeface)

btw this is from the win98 webview.

i have tried all i know of css and have hit the wall any help would be greatly appreciated.

(i have altered this post to hopefully show all the new elements (and their position) in folder.htt, most existing elements are not shown)
