  1. Yea I agree with you, I kinda figured the reason it's not working for him is because something happened between steps 1-3 :)

If I was going to deploy XP i would do it either 1 or 2 ways.  1 way make an image on a PC install all of the drivers, sys prep then roll out the image through various ways onto the same machine type.  Some ways are like Acronis, Ghost, clonezilla FOG.  Or  2 PXE boot to WDS and install XP the old way like the way 2003 server WDS worked.   Add some drivers to the source such as NIC and HDD controller drivers.

WIM is unnecessary for XP installs or deployments.  Hardware independent WIMs is a nightmare for mass deployments requiring you to go to every machine and set up hardware this is counter to the whole reason of making images anyways.  You make the images so you don't have to do that.

I have installed XP WIMs before like from XP for Leagcy PCs and Windows XP embeded uses WIMs but thse WIMs don't have issues like OPs issue.......

  2. OK but I can think of zero reason why you would go through all of the hassle to do this and not use WINPE to connect to WDS.  OP mentioned nothing about not using WDS or using WDS  He didn't say he was storing his image on a thumb drive or burning it to a cd or DVD.   But anyways because XP has a pretty hard time booting on modern hardware without SATA or scsi controller drivers.  means even if u can get a hardware independent WIM to install you may not even be able to boot from it.  So this seems like a huge waste of time to me.  You can always use WDS and install XP the old way over WDS and u don't even need WIMS for that,

  3. I really should resist the urge to respond to this.  But 9 years ago I was 29 and that is way past the prime of most of the methods I was pointing out.   things like Ghost were standards back then.  People had already started shifting to windows 7 at the time.   I was working for a federal credit union at the time supporting over thousands of employees.  I used to remote control PCs on the other side of the planet and restore back ups from 100s of 1000s of miles away.  We were using PXE boot to boot to ghost recovery servers and windows installation services then.  We never stored user data on the computers, all user data was stored on network drives on a NAS which were raid volumes that were mapped.  so ya when you don't store your data on a workstation it's also better anyways.  I have no idea what you are talking about.  Even back in 2005 or so way before this thread things like BART PE or windows preinstallation environment were a thing.  I was making bart PE disks back then and there were things like dream pack and winternals admin pack that were reseting passwords on XP computers.  I used to have to use those CDs from time to time when I worked at at a government contracter to reset peoples windows passwords and fix registry and viruses.  No offense but even dual booting operating systems before 2005 was a thing.  Programs like  Partician Magic did things like this for you and added custom bootloaders.  There were free programs like XOSL that could do it too.  windows 2k came with dual bootloaders out of the box and Linus already had Grub.

  4. This is an interesting read but seems way more complicated than what normally is just dual booting 98 and XP. In the end thats all we are doing here folks but under the guise that it's much more than that when it isn't.   To me if you are really worried about data loss you run RAID so when a hardware failure occurs you don't lose your data.  This dual boot thing does nothing to protect vs that.

It's nice to be able to boot into another OS to fix another but we can do that with another XP. 2k, 98 linux.  We can boot with recovery CDs like bart PE.  We can just use Symantec Ghost and store .gho backups on another partition.  We are just dual booting 98 and XP here, only we are not even using 98 because its crippled with no drivers.  What if what we need to fix said XP machineand the fiels we need is on the internet. We know 98 browser support is terrible and there is no mention of even having network support on the 98 OS.Ya it's not as great when u think about it.

  5. If you’re running Windows 8.1, you already have Internet Explorer 11, so there’s nothing you need to install. If you're running Windows 8.0,  Internet Explorer 11 is not supported.

11 comes with 8.1 out of the box.  Question is why are you running 8.0 and trying to install 11.  Why are you running a highly vulnerable OS like 8.0 no service pack then trying to run a highly vulnerable browser like internet xploder.  This is dumb i'm sorry.

  6. ok i have IE 11 on my win 7 computer right now and I have IE 11 on my win 8 tablet.  I get updates for them from WU.  I don't use IE 11 tho I use any other browser except Internet Xploder for the last 20 years.

  7. Theres people that still run 98 and DOS.  Same goes for people that run XP.  But I wouldn't say its hardware that holds vista back in longevity it's the point that there's nothing particularly special about vista.

I'll make the argument the reason the 98/DOS will never die is because of legacy hardware and software that some people may still find useful will only run on that platform.

The argument for XP is similar.

The argument for Vista is the only reason to run vista was for x64 since XP x64 isn't that mature.  And if that's the reasoning 7x64 and so on can do anything vista x64 can do and better.  So theres no real specialized or important reason to use vista.  Vista is like windows ME is to 98se.    98se>ME  7x64>vista  XP>2000 imo  People hatted the UAC of XP as their reasoning to like 2000 better.  But outside of UAC i cannot think of a sane reasoning 2000 is better besides simplicty.  But we can make the argument you could NLITE and rip XP down to the point that its even smaller than 2k and more functional.  So whatever.

  8. I thought that Trillian was just a skin.  You could use Trillian as a AIM client, it worked with Yahoo, and MSN.  Basically I thought Trillain was just a IM aggregator.  So it wouldn't make a difference, Trillian just connected to AOLs servers as if it was AIM itself.  Trillian was like Pidgin, the universal chat client.   ICQ probably still works :P

  9. This is the wrong forum section to post in but because no one can probably give u a better answer I will try and give you some advice.   You have really only 2 options.  Both of them are not very good since you know that your file is gone.  Just like I do.  And you should of made back ups.   You can try looking for a TMP file version of the file in your user folder temp files and pray that theres a copy of your file in there that is undamaged.  You can try installing pirform Recova and pray that it can somhow find an old deleted recoverable version of your file.  Other than that there is nothing.  If I gota explain to you how you would go about finding TMP files or where that folder is I am not going to do it.

Microsoft will try to act like there is a solution to this kinda problem but all solutions lead to making a new presentation.  Make sure that you make copys of your current presentation and rename the copys so that you have back ups.  If you find a TMP version make a copy of it and rename the copy etc.  try to open the copys in case that maybe the originals were just resting on a bad sector of the HDD or something,

  10. OK I may have mislead slightly.  After I retested this.  You have to use kernel EX and select windows 2000 Sp4 to install.  But it natively works on 98 with office 97 once installed without Kernel EX.  I believe this is like version 1.0 basically of the 2007 compatibility pack.  It works on windows 2000 and windows 98 once you install it with Kernel EX compatibility mode but like I said kernel EX isn't needed after that.

  11. I have a rare version of Office 2007 converterpack that will install on windows 98 and allow office 97 to open docx files.  If you want let me know.  Anyways back to what I was saying ABI word is probably the best you can get on such an old machine like 600 MHZ cpu becasue it is so light weight and basically up to date standards.  I kinda wonder if the windows 2000XP old cigaretes wrapper could be modified to run on 98 opening up newer possibility.    I had been thinking a lot about ways you could get a modern web browser working on 9x and thought that our best hope is probably a browser that runs on Java like lobo or jxbrowser.

  12. My experience has been the same as everyone else crappy software and proprietary ink that costs more than the printers are worth that lock you into years of butt rape by the manufactures of the printers.  This is not for just HP deskjets but other manufacture Deskjets.  However Laserjets to me from HP have always been great.  I will only use laserjets from HP.

Like I said in another thread.  HP postscript is a standard protocol.  You do not always need the right printer driver for a printer.  At least that is true for network printers.  You can a lot of times just get away with a generic PCL driver and it will work fine for basic printing.

  13. Ya Kernel EX does that when you choose the option during setup to globally apply it to everything.  Always uncheck that.  Then it only effects programs you specifically want to run with kernelEX and not everything by default.  I remember it saying something about that there being no reason to un select global system settings or whatever its called during setup.  Thats pretty comical.  Trust me.

Oh I forgot to mention, you can get cute PDF + older version of ghost script "i think its 8.6 not sure" if you want to print PDFs that works really well.  As far as web browsers are concerned I feel like it's a possibility to to backport a webkit based browser but it's not going to be perfect and without SSE2 support on older computers it's always going to be a challenge to get anything multimedia related these days to run.

If you really want to impress your friends. Install this supplicant to add a standard TCP/IP port like newer versions of windows.  Then Install the driver for like the most basic HP laser JET PCL driver.  Most printers have Laserjet Enumeration for compatibility purposes.  I print to a Brother network printer that has that.

  14.

Ok sumatra PDF, older version works with kernel EX.  I cannot give you the specific build but I know for absolute certain it works I used it.  Older builds of Foxit reader work without kernel EX.  That is as advanced as you will get with PDF readers.

Decent office utility that will work is ABI word.  Check for version.  I think Word 97-SR2 is included in 98s SP3 or something but I don't know if that runs on ME.  You maybe able to just select that and nothing else.

The battery issue maybe related to ACPI is not correctly installed on the laptop.  IDK about ME but I am pretty sure 98se has a battery meter if ACPI sys driver is installed correctly.

As far as brightness is concerned there should be adjustments with the video driver or LCD.  like ATI or Nvidia have that built into the drivers.  the LCD is hardware based.  I don't think your going to find third party brightness and color controls.

Why not just use 98se to ME then you can have the best of both worlds.  I have done installs like 98se + 98se2Me + 98se SP3 + Kenel EX + Revolutions Pack and everything worked properly.

  15. Fell like it's worth mentioning here that theres an add on for firefox called No Script.  https://noscript.net/

And to be totally obvious about this peice of software is that It hardens Firefox attack serfice so hard that you cannot even view most web pages properly until u set up whitelists.  Like if you only use firefox and no script it is impossible to get a virus browsing a web page.  That means the only way your getting a virus is to download somthing and click it.  That is pretty much your own stupidity at that point. For not scanning the file for virus.  You could get a virus through email, but probably not webmail.  And only from an attachment again you are clicking things.

Addblock Plus + Noscript + HTTPs Everywhere + maybe ghostery.  You are secure.  Very.

  16. Becasue I don't wan't to use something like Dragon naturally speaking.  I have a copy of that but I wanted to be able to use Microsoft speech engine, and build my own.  Doesn't matter, it's never going to happen, unless someone like BWC starts using XP and decides to do it.  Right now theres no one like that in the XP community.
