Is anybody else experiencing this on Windows 8.0? Actually, how do I disable this? That's the critical part.

8 is faster than 8.1 on most hardware, especially on low-end hardware. Also, the UI is better for usage as a main PC.

Just try manually patching the Media Centre files, that should fix it.

UPDATE: I've left Vista on it, and dual booted with Linux Mint 18.

In addition to what @dencorso said above, you may also need to enable TLS 1.0 in Internet Explorer options as the WU website no longer accepts SSL 2.0/3.0 secure connections.
Internet Options > Advanced tab > Security section (scroll to the very bottom) > check Use TLS 1.0. For improved security, it's also good to uncheck Use SSL 3.0 and especially Use SSL 2.0 - unless you need to visit any specific websites not capable of anything better. I'd recommend unchecking both and turning them back on only if some site actually stops working after that.
I did enable it, it won't load in IE8

"Are old people really obsolete?"
No. They still function quite well, thank you.
And, yes, some of us take certain medicines to prevent "viruses" and keep certain protections to prevent "trojans".
Currently, the XP Updates (medicine/protections) have been archived across the WWW, intact, taken directly from MS. If you wish to have them all (just in case you need them, like "medicine"), ask and we'll give a link to a Downloader that will get them for you (your very own copy).
If you still know where to get all the updates in a downloader- then please send me the link, as lately my windows update on XP has not worked, and that is on SP3 from Microsoft.

I am working on a '07 era custom build that is designed for vista, it essentially has the same specs as the original Mac Pro, and I am thinking of upgrading it, and I would like to know what the best OS for it is, preferably windows or linux, but I would be willing to hackintosh it if it would expand it's usability until sometime in the early 2020's (around 2021-2023). Any suggestions would be helpful. The current OS is listed below:
Windows Vista Ultimate x86
Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 9, as a part of the updating.

My step-cousins needed a PC to play some old games on, so I am fixing a Windows 95 era PC with a Pentium 1 133 MHZ.
What OS should I put on it? It can run Win98 SE, it has 64 MB of RAM.

I am upgrading my Dell Latitude D800 from Windows 2000 pro to Windows 7 Ultimate. Any suggestions? It will be on the internet, and might replace my Late-2011 MacBook pro.

I don't recommend to install Win ME on a pentium 1 machine.
Minimum hardware requirements:
Pentium 150MHz, 32 MB Ram, 320 MB HDD
Recommended:
Pentium 2, 64 MB Ram, 2 GB HDD
I think you'll have no fun. Probably your machine will be unbearably slow! Not to mention you intend to install programs like OpenOffice 3.x, Opera 11.xx or Firefox 9 ...
Ten maybe fifteen years back I had a Pentium 1 (200MHz). Win 95 ran well on it, but not 98SE. It was much to slow. Leave your 98SE on your pentium 1, if it runs fine.
my ME disk is hacked to run on a 133mhz

Socket 5 or 7? Either way you should be able to do a cheap cpu upgrade.
socket 7

It's really a matter of preference. How fast is your Pentium 1? 150MHz is the minimum it calls for and unless you use a switch to install it, it actually will not install on anything less than it which is surprising because XP would install on a 100MHz processor. I tried it once and it took almost 4 hours to install. lol
But either way, I was never a fan of Me just because it didn't treat me too well. But as I said, it's a preference thing. If it's more stable on your computer, by all means, run Windows Me. I just felt like Windows Me was a bit of a crap shoot because sometimes it would work alright and then on other machines it would be just horrific.
the pentium 1 is 133 mhz

My old desktop runs 98 SE but should I upgrade to ME? ME is more stable on it than 98 SE is.

MSE For Vista Now Shows XP Nag Screens
in Windows Vista
Posted
Believe it or not, MSE can still be downloaded and installed on Vista. I've attached screenshots. Oddly enough, I haven't gotten a nag screen, even after definition updates.
Screenshot notes:
Microsoft's website still lists Vista for the download, not just 7.
The installer did, indeed work.
Just to verify that it is Vista, I've inserted a screenshot of my system specs.
And, lastly, the application running on Vista after a reboot. Not to mention, I tried this out with an older installer on an XP machine the other day and it still could fetch the newest definitions.
