  1. Startup created during win95 installation - therefore on the Sony. The startup does not have CD support. I have no devices attached. There is a directory on the D: drive hence the cd rom is E: This is reaching ludicrous proportions and whilst I have responded to your efforts by staying with it. I think enough is enough. I have checked the RAM but the battery is failing after 11 years and this might be the problem with Windows 95? I am giving up. Thanks again for all your efforts.
  2. Did exactly what you indicated and reinstalled the setup.exe from the C: drive. No change. The message is the same. In view of your comments about the installation disk I tried creating a startup floppy on the Sony but it does not have CD support so I cannot progress. The instruction (line 5) did show the CD drive as E: with the setup.exe file. Not sure what is using D: It is recognised and has a directory. Not seen that with the other instruction I have followed previously.
  3. I have a lot of very old programs and as I have retired I wanted to get back to them hence the win 95. I will try to get win 98 but the cost of 95 was £6 (via eBay) and the other one goes back to when I had it installed originally. Best price I can see for win 98SE is about £17 - much of that is postage as they are mostly from USA. Thanks again for all the effort. It was certainly a learning experience.
  4. New 95CD fails. I think this is the end of the line!
  5. I have ordered a Windows 95 CD. Least I could do after everyone's efforts. I will try it and post the results here.
  6. Would be happy to test win98 but do not have a CD or key. Just another piece of info in case it is relevant the FIX95.CPU makes no difference. If I don't use it I can still get into safe mode.
  7. Yes Windows Protection error. Disabling CD Rom as you suggest makes no difference. I eliminated hardware as my original XP works perfectly on reinstall. I wonder if the Win95 CD is faulty. Is there somewhere to download a copy so I can test that? Otherwise it seems there is no other solution?
  8. I have completed your list but it makes no difference. I was not able to fathom the xcopy instruction to copy files from the cd rom to the hard drive so I copied from WIN98 folder on the CD. I never had a problem with the CD Rom prior to installing Win95 so the Win98 seems to have no effect. My problem is with the CD Rom after install. That is why I thought I needed some instructions in the config and autoexec files to recognise the OAKCDROM driver?
  9. Very sorry. I have formatted HDD. Opened WIN95 Folder but cannot fathom or find the line for Format to Fat 32. There is no format.exe so I assume there is a line of instruction?
  10. Driver downloaded and copied to C: I cannot get the entries right for autoexec and config files so it is not loaded. Any help on that? I have tried various internet suggested entries.
  11. Sorry I overlooked - hard drive is 32gb and I have removed the partition so it is one drive. Yes there is a floppy. When I check version it says 95B which I assume is OSR2? Fix95CPU installs all files with no errors and says Win95 will now load. I installed Fix95CPU during installation when I was asked to reboot. I have also tried it after the install just to check. It crashes immediately after the Fix95DPU install but on next restart it loads in safe mode. I had not realised the problem installing the original CD Rom drivers but I originally tried without them anyway. I also wondered about the 95 install CD being damaged but there are no recorded errors during installation so I am not sure how I find out? I will try another reinstall using What I have gleaned from you all. I hope I have now covered all your questions?
  12. You are tenacious! Just to reassure you I am working hard at my end - within my knowledge limits. To answer your latest questions I have a CD not a set of floppies. I have tried to add lines to the config.sys and autoexec.bat based on searches to try to get the CD Rom loaded but have not found any that load it. The CD Rom is - Matshita UJDA 730 and I copied the drivers from the XP installation via a floppy into the C drive of Win 95. It seems to recognise one of them but keeps telling me the CD Rom is not turned on. Before loading 95 I formatted the drive with Dos 6.22 (3 floppies) and then ran format C: /s which I gather installs fat 16 used by 95B. This did not work. I have also tried installing from dos 6.22. In case that affects anything? I also tried installing using manual rather than typical and choosing virtually no drivers. The results to all this are exactly the same error message. I even cleaned the installation CD! Incidentally XP installation works perfectly with no sign of any errors. My last posting seems to be missing - I discovered that the processor speed is 1.3ghz which I thought should not cause a problem?
  13. I am using Windows 95 installation disk original - not a copy. BTW? - what is this? CDMKE comes up on my device manager in win95 safe mode as not properly installed - no idea why. mkecd seems to relate to specific make of CD rom. Mine is Matshita. I have reinstalled XP on the Sony and just noticed that the processor is 1.3ghz. Surely that should not need your FIX95CPU? If that is true what else could cause the error message. I have tried all the options in - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/136337 to cover other problems but nothing works. Have we reached the end of the line?
  14. I noticed there are 2 bootlogs and I have checked the fails on the other one (prv). CDMKE.SYS fails - several items under that heading . No other failures. Very limited options in bios but I have disabled the dcrom at startup. No effect. I noticed the font but cannot find it on a search in the fonts so I don't know why it is trying to load it. In safe mode my cdrom is not recognised and all my efforts to correct that have failed. I thought if I had a cd I could try loading some drivers from the Sony install cds which have all the drivers. Any other thoughts? If not I will have to give up which I find very frustating. In that case I thank everyone who has tried to help me.
  15. Thank you for your patience and for staying with my problem. I have downloaded and extracted form the link you gave and reinstalled FIX95CPU. The result is the same the files are copied and the message tells me win95 will now load. But I get the same error message and can only load in safe mode. I have now copied the Bootlog - here it is. 16. Windows protection error gives nothing but one line saying Windows Protection Error - Restart computer When I select Bootlog startup it simply goes into the same Windows protection error so I cannot get a log. The DOS problem was with the 95B startup download (top of page 1 of this topic) which I solved - I just needed to extract the files from Windows. As a test I reinstalled the original XP onto the Sony and that loads fine so it does not seem to be a hardware problem. In safe mode the CD Rom is not recognised and the process for correcting this seems to be rocket science. I wondered if I could manually load the drivers from the original XP CD but they are too big for a floppy?
  17. I have realised I needed to extract 95B download and have now reinstalled correctly. I have the same problem. One of my devices shows an error - PCMCIA controller. Cannot update driver from safe mode. Just in case it is relevant.
  18. RAM 256. The error message is the same - Windows Protection error. A logged boot results in the same error message so I get no results. I could try reinstalling but my 95 version is B and the 95B download will not work in dos. So I have to install using the first 95 download and then try to amend it from safe mode. This seems suspect?
  19. Sony PCG 9G3M. What I cannot understand is that the laptop loads in safe mode presumably using the same processor speed as a normal load yet it will not load in normal mode. Seems weird to my simple mind. It seems to suggest something in the programs or installation. I have installed the Fix 95 CPU and the VMM... follow up. Both seem to load OK. I established that my Win 95 CD is the B version. I could not use the floppy in dos so I installed the original version and then used the floppy in safe mode to reinstall Win 95 and then reinstalled the fixes. This made no difference. Your confidence in finding the answer is very reassuring. Thank you again.
  20. Thank you for replying. I am not sure what you need. It is an old (12 years) Sony laptop PC. I assume the processor speed is too high for win 95 hence the fix.
  21. I managed to install from floppy the program to make win95 run. No errors and it confirms windows will now run. It runs in safe mode but I still get the same error message when trying to load normally. What am I doing wrong
