  1. I have been fighting with a roaming profile issue on my Server 2008 and Windows XP network. Users will sometimes get a message stating "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off" when they log into windows. Sometimes this can be resolved by rebooting the computer and then the user will log in successfully. This has affected all of the computers on the domain at least once and so far I have been unable to solve the issue. I get the following three errors in the event viewer on the XP machines when this happens: Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1509 Date: 12/23/2008 Time: 6:56:42 AM User: <DOMAIN>\<username> Computer: DJK4VQ41 Description: Windows cannot copy file \\s1dc01\users\profile\<username>\NTUSER.DAT to location C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\NTUSER.DAT. Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator. DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1515 Date: 12/23/2008 Time: 6:56:42 AM User: <DOMAIN>\<username> Computer: DJK4VQ41 Description: Windows has backed up this user's profile. Thank you.
  2. I recently started doing some work for a company that wants to allow some of their employees to use their software remotely. They already had a server running terminal services that they never used, so we installed the software on that machine. The problem I am having with the software is that it will only print to LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3. I am trying to make a script that will share the auto created printer in their session and then map an LPT port to it. I have been unable to find a way to automatically share the printer. Any help will be appreciated or suggestions on how to do this differently.
  3. Is there any way to get around this besides using a third-party browser?
  4. I am having trouble with digital certificates and mandatory profiles. Our company has to access a website using a digital certificate. When using a normal profile we can access it with no trouble, but when we switch the profile to a mandatory we can no longer access the site. The main site will launch without trouble. We then click the logon button which then opens the "Choose a digital certificate" window. The certificate is displayed in the window and we click ok. We then get a "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage" message. If we switch back from the mandatory profile back to a normal profile it works again. How can I access this site with a mandatory profile?
  5. I have tried both the default windows port settings of 9600, 8, None, 1, None and a configuration I found on a website of 2400, 8, None, 1, Xon/Xoff. I have not found any documentation from APC on what settings to actually use. I have also tried using the PowerChute Business software, but it did not work either. Today I will try using the UPS with a different computer to see if the serial port on the server is bad.
  6. I have an APC Smart-UPS 1400XL connected to a server running Server 2003 through a serial cable. When I go to the Power Options under the UPS tab i have an error that states "The UPS service has lost communication with the UPS." I cannot figure out how to resolve this issue. I have tried two serial cables from APC (490-1524c and 490-0020b) with the same results. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
  7. I must say i agree with nmX.Memnoch. This is what i do with most of the servers i manage. Two drivers in raid 1 for the os and then the rest in raid 5 for storage. If anything happens you just need to swap the bad disk with a good one and the array will rebuild itself. Also on top of that i usually have a tape drive backup system so backups can be taken off site in case of fire/flood/etc.
  8. Yes we need terminal server; we have about a dozen thin clients we want to use and want to have some people be able to access their data while not in the office. I was actually able to find a document with the eopen information. When i go to the site and enter the information i do get the license information for windows server 2003, but not the terminal server licenses eventhough they are listed. Is there something im missing on the site?
  9. A company(company1) I do business for just aquired another company(company2). Part of the purchase of company2 included their computers and servers. Company1 wants to use these servers, but first we want to a fresh install of windows server 2003 before we switch over. The problem we have is that all the licensing is missing; either lost in paperwork somewhere or stolen by the previouse IT guy. I was able to extract the licenses for windows 2003, exchange, and office. The last thing we need is a way to get is the Terminal Server Licensing information. Is there any way to extract the license keys or transfer them to the new install of server 2003?
  10. What I have done before is have XP installed. Install a second hard disk, then just install vista to that second hard disk. Without doing anything else I am offered a selection to boot to Microsoft Windows or An earlyer version of Windows every time i turn on my comptuer.
  11. Hi Kartel, If you dont want to pay full price for vista you can either get a upgrade edition and follow these instructions: http://www.windowsitpro.com/mobile/pda/Article.cfm?ArticleID=95011&News=1 Or you could just buy a OEM editon of Vista from a place like newegg or zipzoomfly. I believe the OEM editions are cheaper than buying the upgrade editions. Hope this helps. -Andrew
  12. Hi Tom, Im going to try to answer your questions in order. 1) A per device CAL is usually used in places where you have multiple people using the same comptuer to remotely log in; like a call center. A user CAL is usually used when you have a few people that access the remote comptuer from multiple places; like a salesman. If only the bookkeeper, marketing person, and your neighbor access the server remotely a per user CAL should do fine for you. 2) If you have a router setup alerady you dont really have to put a second nic in your server. You just need to forward the correct ports(for remote desktop and any other services you are using) to your server (which should have a static ip). There should be no problem having the local computers on the same network as the router and server. 3) You will have to have login accounts and passwords for all users. There is really no way around this. A domain is supposed secure. 4) It is really easy to setup pop email in SBS 2003. First open server management and open advanced management > pop3 connector. Click the link to open the pop3 connector. Now click add and you can setup the incoming connection and set it to a mailbox (which you should create when you make the user). Now to setup the outbound you need to go to advanced managemetn > domainName (exchange) > connectors > smallBusiness smtp. Right click and go to properties. Click the button that says forward all mail through this ..... then type the smtp server in the field below. Almost done, now click on advanced tab, then outbound security. Select basic authentication and then click modify. You now need to type in the account name and password assoicated with the outgoing mail server. You only need to do this once, all the accounts will use this for the outgoing server. I hope this helps out. If you have any more questiosn just post them here. -Andrew
  13. Me and my friends want to be able to connect our networks at our houses together so we can share resources. We first have two houses with at least 5 computes each. Each of these two locations have a computer running server 2003. We want to somehow connect these two computers together so we can browse all the computers on each network for either location by computer name and be able to play network games together. After we are able to do this, we would like to allow a few other friends to be able to connect to the network and be able to share their resources too. Everyone has a cable modem with sticky ip addresses. Is there a way to do this? Please tell how to do this step by step. This picture should help out with what im tring to say:
  14. I dont want to have my second monitor as the primary, that will cause the system bar to move to my second monitor, i just want the remote desktop connection to open in full screen on my second monitor. Note: When i have both monitors set to 1024x768 i can do full screen on either monitor, but not when i have them set to different resolutions, then it defaults to the primary monitor resolution.
  15. On my primary comptuer i have two monitors attached to it. The first monitor is running at a resolution of 1600x1200 which i use for most of my work. My second monitor is at a resolution of 1024x768. I connect remotely to a few different computers and i want to be able to display them full screen on the second monitor, but when i set Remote Desktop to full screen it takes the resolution of my first monitor. How can i make my remote connection be full screen on the second monitor?
  16. I recieve this error when i try to assign someone to be the tape changer for Windows 2003 SBS: 8004d002. The only information i can find is about exchanger 2000 and it says to update to sp3. I have exchanger 2003 running on this computer right now. How can i get rid of this error so that the server can send out messages to the tape changer automatically?
  17. I have a computer with windows xp set up as a file server and as a media center. i have three hard drives, the first has windows installed on it and other apps, the second contains videos and the third is mounted into a folder on the second called music. ex. first C:\ Windows and apps second D:\ Movies third D:\Music Music I want to be able to share the D drive so i can access my movies and music on other coptuers in my house. When i enable file sharing on the drive it allows me to play all my movies, but when i try to access the files in the music folders i get this error: Media\Music\ filename or folder is not accessible. You might now have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied. On the share i have full access to everything. When i access the folder on the server itself i have no problems at all, but when i try to access it from any of my other compuers i get that error. I hope that someone out there knows the answer for this. Thanks, Andrew
