  1. hey guys... Don't know if everyone is aware, I just found out, that Spybot seems to have a new version out (1.4RD2). It can be found at: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html I ran an updated version 1.3 scan, cleaned up junk, ran Ad-aware SE cleaned up a lot more junk, then installed Spybot 1.4 and still found another 17 items. Seems to do well detectign a lot of the toolbar junk. Just thought i'd pass it on.

  3. WMP for video. Why? It's there... MusicMatch Jukebox 10 for music. It's a pretty sweet music setup. If you feel like PAYING for service (which I don't anymore), it will find an artist for you and play that artist like a radio rotation of just them OR even cooler... if you like an artist's style, you can select "Artist Match" and it will play that artist and those who sound similar. That's a pretty spiffy little feature.
  4. I'm trying to move a bunch of individual PST's witha LOT of journal notes in each individual PST to exchange. THAT isn't much of a problem. The problem comes in when there are contact names that are duplicate and these folks want to COMBINE the journal entry data from the duplicate contacts. Anyone have clue on how to do this without losing Journal data? I have had no luck with Microsoft on this one and all my googling hasn't helped. Thanks for any tips. joe
  5. Let me add to that Trojan Hunter. It often identifies the .DLL culprit. A lot of the spyware apps remove the effects of the .dll but don't show you the culprit that causes teh problem. Other than that your list is pretty solid.
  6. #1. Not a novice. I do this for a living. #2. I am not an anti-microsoft tech but there are days when I just want to go postal on them. Here's my problem: I upgraded a client from outlook express to outlook 2K. Imported all their mail, contacts, etc. Everything went fine. I sent and received a test mail... all's well. Then the client asked, "Why doesn't the name pop up when I start typing an e-mail address." "Hmmm... don't know.. it should default to that setting on", I reply. Let's check. There's no box for "Suggest names while completing To, CC, BCC" to check. It's normally under tools > options > e-mail options > Advanced e-mail options. I check the web to make sure I'm not crazy. It's supposed to be there. I'm am crazy but right. I then updated all the service packs, etc etc. Still... no box to check to "Suggest names..." Ok... I'm tired of messing with this. I install Office XP. WAHOO!!!! I now have the box to check to suggest names and it is already checked like I thought it should be. STILL NOT WORKING! Here's where it gets real fun. Now... If I type a partial part of the display name (I.E. "Joe") and click on the "Check name" icon, it immediatly resolves my display name to the proper e-mail address. Now for even MORE fun... If I then type Joe it automatically completes the e-mail address... WAHOO!!! It's WORKING!!! UNTIL.... you close outlook. As soon as you close outlook, you have the same problem all over again. Once you "Check name" it remembers to autocomplete the name until outlook is closed again. Anyone who can solve this gets a $20 and a round of beer at any favorite bar next time they're in Houston, TX. If I'm posting in the wrong place, then someone just shoot me now... cause I get tired of trying to make sure it's posted in the righ tforum only to have some wise guy point out that I should have posted in..... X. Thanks in advance for any brilliance or general humor that someone might find / add to this dismal situation.
  7. Hey guys, In the past I wrote an install script for installing all of my diagnostics tools (Ad-aware, spybot, etc.) and it has saved me a TON of time on clients machines. NOW... want to see if I can write a script that will allow me to perform a number of my normal "tune-up" related functions from a command line. Does anyone know if Ad-aware SE personal has any command line functionality? If not, do any of their products? I'd like to be able to launch a full scan from command line. Thank for any help.
  8. Don't know how they "Found their way" without knowing which machine you wanted to connect to. Thanks fo rthe thoughts guys. i will have to play around with it. I haven't had a need yet but I'm sur eit will come up.
  9. Hey gang, Quick question: I've set up Remote desktop in XP Pro on a few different users systems. I love it as it is really simply. My question is this: I had to open ports 3389-3390 in my linksys router and forward any requests on that port to a specific IP address of the computer that I want to connect too (I.E. 192.168.1.100). That's all good and fine and works great for one computer. How do you configure the ports if you have multiple machines you'd like to be able to connect too?
  10. LOL! Thanks guys for the answer. The sad thing is that I'm an old "Classic" menu guy and I totally didn't even think of the XP menu as an option. That worked. I have some excuse with that one but barely. The REALLY sad thing is not remembering or really (not finding) the "customize desktop" tab under "Desktop" I swear I looked everywhere for it. LOL. That worked as well. Thanks for the great answers guys. I love this website.
  11. Hey guys, I have a small child who is fascinate dwith my computer and I frequently find odd things he's done to it. I don't much mind as I can fix all the stuff he breaks... HOWEVER, it seems he deleted the "My Computer" icon and I can't figure out how to get it back. Obviously the shortcut for it does not have the full functions of the normal icon. Any bright ideas outside of a reinstall of the OS as I know there has to be a way. Thanks in advance for your genius. :-) Joe PS. XP Pro by the way.
  12. Thanks for the thoughts. Yes, there's a giant .PST on the server. The user has a Desktop and a laptop. She also uses laplink to sync the files when she leaves and comes back. It's running ok. I just wanted to look at what I could do to improve the speed of accessing the file. It was slow opening attachments and such. Actually it was unvelievably slow but that turned out to be a corrupt domain account. I rejoined it to the domain and now she's accessing files nice and fast again. That's what got me looking into this in the first place. I was thinking that 2 NIC's would be acheap and fast way to expand server bandwitdh. I could get a gigabit NIC and Switch but there's a little more expense involved there so the 1 NIC and load balancing or something similar seemed cheap and effective. Thanks again, Joe
  13. EXCELLENT! I can't wait to try this. Ihad just resorted to using the drive letter C and knowing that if the system drive was anything other than C, I couldn't use my little app. Most systems have a C as their root, but who wants to count on that. Thanks so much.
  14. How can you tell if such a change can be handled by your NIC? Do standard Realtek 8139C cards handle that? Would the speed of the calculations be sufficient on the NIC? Would it be wise to makes these changes on a server? Is there a noticeable difference between the performance of the calulations on the NIC verses the CPU? In other words, would your network data transfer be affected possitively or negatively by such a change? I have so many questions... lol.
  15. I was just curious. I have a user who has a large PST file. We've narrowed it down as much as possible but it still is 1.7GB. Would there be a benefit in putting dual NIC's in the server, splitting the PST into 2 sections, mapping to each NIC separately by IP to create two different drives and putting each PST in a folder that was mapped to those individual drives? IE. SERVER NIC #1 = IP 192.168.0.1 SERVER NIC #2 = IP 192.168.0.2 Mapped Drive #1 = PSTDATA on 192.168.0.1 (Y:) Mapped Drive #2 = PSTDATA on 192.168.0.2 (Z:) in the PST Data folder would be A-G.pst and H-Z.pst (or something along those lines.) Would this increase bandwidth / speed in opening the PST file? Would this decrease bandwidth load for other users? Just curious. many thanks, Joe
  16. I've created a batch file that allows me to do a silent install of a number of diagnostics utilities in win 2K and Win xp. I'm trying to re-write it for win 9x. The problem I'm having is that I don't know the root drive on all these machines. They could change. In win 2K/XP I use the command %systemdrive% to determine this. That doesn't work in win 9x and I've seen the command %windir% (if memory serves) but I've had no luck with it either. Can someone tell me how to determine the main system drive in Win9x?
  17. Good advice mentioned above. Also: You might also click on your start button and from the Run box type sfc.exe and scan for altered system files.

  19. Thanks for the info. The problem isn't the "work" as much as the part of the unknown time before as-aware opens. Ad-aware.exe only opens AFTER the downloaded update installs. So, on some slower machines or machines with slower internet connections, the ad-aware.exe files doesn't open until AFTER the kill command has executed. I THOUGHT that the /wait command made it not execute the next line until AFTER the previous line had ran. Is there a way to insure that the kill lines don't run until ad-aware.exe has launched?
  20. Guys, do you happen to know how to default the Ad-aware program to NOT automatically run the helpfile, update, and system scan after install? I'm using my program/script to kill these apps after the install but it's a pain and creates extra work that shouldn't have to be there. IF anyone knows a way to have them turned off by default that would be a GREAT help.
  21. DUDE! You rock! :-) I can't wait to get home and try this out. The script is coming along nicely. I ahev a few qerks to work through, but so far it's proving a HUGE time saver. I have a question. I was trying to delete "Ad-aware SE Personal" icon from my desktop via a DOS prompt and was having NO luck. I tried: del C:\my path\ad-awa~1.lnk del C:\my path\ad~1.link del C:\my path\ad-aware SE Personal.lnk del C:\my path\"ad-aware SE Personal.lnk" del C:\my path\'ad-aware SE Personal.lnk' and about 90 other versions and never could determine the right file name. Is there any way to make 2K or XP display the DOS name of a file? It showed me the long file name in my directory (Which of course I could not delete using.) Thanks again for such great help. joe
  22. Greetings all. Thanks for such great efforts and answers from knowledgeable people. I'm writing a script to install a group of maintenance apps (Ad-aware, Spybot, etc.). The install part is perfect now and does all I need it to do. However, I'm working on the cleanup part now. After all the apps are installed they create shortcuts all over the desktop and start menu. Is there any way to determine via a script or command what user profile the script was run under and automatically have it delete the shortcuts and folders from the startup menu? something like: Del \documents and settings\%currentuser%\desktop\ad-aware se personal
  23. Nope. The SE personal 1.5 version is the free version you can get from anywhere.
  24. Found a new (freeware) Process killing application that is compatible with: Win9X, WinME, NT, 2000 and XP. It's called Procrecon. It can be found at: http://www.webchitect.com/ProcRecon/download.html Using it, the above example of ad-aware's help menu and application termination afte r asilent install would like like: ECHO. ECHO Installing Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05 ECHO Please wait... start /wait %systemdrive%\X\aawsepersonal.exe /SILENT start /wait %systemdrive%\X\ProcRecon.exe /t "Ad-Aware SE Personal" start /wait %systemdrive%\X\ProcRecon.exe /t "Ad-Aware SE Personal edition" X = the location of your install script.
  25. As a side note, does anyone know of a good utility for killing processes in 9x?
