Thank you. I have read these and most of the other references to this problem that I found on the net. I don't have a disk to try the recovery console. I'm trying to get one from the tech guy at my office. What seems abundantly UNclear is that no one knows why this happens or how to avoid it. Gotta love computers, huh? Since this is my second go around with this issue - and second computer - I'd love to find out if I've done anything to bring it on or if it's just my "luck".

Hi. I'm running xp pro in my laptop. Ironically, my 'old' laptop crashed a few months ago and hung up at the same place. When our tech guy gave it back, several things weren't working - cd drive, couldn't use flash to back up, etc. He sent me a 'new' laptop. I spent yesterday importing my backed up Outlook files to the "new" laptop. All was well until I moved the computer to another outlet and BOOM! It wouldn't start up, just froze, and when I tried to start in Safe Mode, it got stuck at mup.sys. I've been reading about this and it seems there is no answer. Does anyone have any insight? I'm getting yet another computer but I fear the same thing happening. could I be doing something to cause this? Any help is appreciated.
