  1. -remove the lower 80mm fan that's in the back, and put tape over the grill so that air cannot enter the case through there.

-remove the fan from the side of the case, put tape over that area.

-remove the fan from the hard drive cage.

look into Nexus or Noctua 80mm fans, they're quieter and will offer better performance.

it will be balanced out through air pressure, so having less fans wont be necessarily bad.

but with replacing the fans, you'll want to replace your CPU heatsink to a newer one that can work better in lower airflow situations.

what type of CPU do you have?

That sounds like a good plan... do you know if they make a panel that will close off unused fan slots? not that there's anything wrong with tape, I just figure if they make something to close them off it would work better....

I'm running two Intel Xeon Processos one with a Swiftech Heatsink and the other with the stock heatsink, unfortunelly the way the DH-800 mobo is laid out it doesn't allow enough room to install two Swiftech heatsinks.

  2. Hoping you guys can help me out with a boot issue... I have an SLI 3124 SATA card with one 500GB sata drive that I use for storage attached to my computer.

It works fine once the computer is up and running but if that Sata cable is plugged into that card the system will give an error when booting up saying WindowsRoot\System32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt .... If I simply disconnect the Sata cable from the card and boot up everything is fine and windows loads properly. Ive made sure that my primary boot drive is boot device one in the bios setup, Ive also tried manually selecting to boot from my primary dirve when the Sata cable is connected but it still doesn't work....

  3. I have been using 5 of these fans in my case for about the past two years. While this was fine when the computer was in a different room, now that its in the same room that I spend the majority of my time in, I dont want the fans so loud....

I'm looking at getting some quieter fans maybe these Do you think that this would still provide enough air flow?

  4. Thanks, I acutally tried this, but still can't get it to work. The monitor still goes black. Is there any other registry key that needs to be changed? How about something to reset the enable VGA mode so maybe that will work?

OK, u could try the basevideo approach as well. I would however, uninstall your graphics card drivers.

Then i would go ahead with a tool such as http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

I havent tried driver sweeper, i was actually searching for driver.net something which worked very well.

Basically run such a tool get rid of all system dll exe sys files, inf files referring to your graphics card, all registry settings.

To get rid of all nvidia/ati what not registry entries, use a tool as Regseeker and search for everything gfx related and delete.

System reboot, and reinstall drivers. Also possibly check out omegadrivers and try those, tho i would prefer WHQL certified drivers myself.

I ended up on using Find in the winternals registry editor and searched for Video - I was able to find the correct numbers to change. SO now it works in Enable VGA Mode - once in that mode I removed the video card from the divice manager restarted in "normal" mode, and walah!

    NEXT ISSUE:

Who would of guessed that the WildCat VP 880 Pro video card that I was just using with a 24'' CRT at 1920.1200 Resolution, wouln't be able to display 1680x1050??????? I just figured that I was running a 24inch monitor at the right resolution that it would have no prob. displaying a smaller monitors resolution. Does anyone know of any drivers for the Wildcat card that will force it to run 1680x1050?

  5. No luck in safe mode either, and unfortunelly the 24' CRT no longer works :( .... some good news though is I was able to boot up using Winternals ERD commander, anyone know how to change the resolution in the registry?

Yes. on my system its HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\

or just f3 it and search for DefaultSettings.VRefresh and check its under same folder

DO NOT go to other currentcontrolset folder then standard, dont go to the CurrentControlSet001 or CurrentControlSet002

just CurrentControlSet folder. The other will auto update and the other is safe mode i think it was.

Thanks, I acutally tried this, but still can't get it to work. The monitor still goes black. Is there any other registry key that needs to be changed? How about something to reset the enable VGA mode so maybe that will work?

  6. No luck in safe mode either, and unfortunelly the 24' CRT no longer works :( .... some good news though is I was able to boot up using Winternals ERD commander, anyone know how to change the resolution in the registry?

  7. I just switched out my 24inch CRT monitor to a 20inch LCD, now when I start up windows the monitor enters power save mode then says that its unable to display the current resoluiton. Ive tried using the Enable VGA Mode option but the screen just goes black... Do I have any other options here? I have tried hooking the monitor up with the DVI and VGA cables but still get the same results....

  8. yes I saw that before, but the values are different.

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms795746.aspx

    The values mean:

0xC0000005 - access denied (something running in kernel tried to do something that was disallowed, usually attempt to read or write from an address range that is invalid or protected).

0x00000399 - The address where the exception occurred, this is at byte 921 in process space. This is definitely near the beginning of process space, so it's either a module trying to load in an invalid location, or a loaded module trying to modify kernel table structures (protected). This is either a REALLY bad driver, or it's malicious.

0xF898962c - The address of the exception record, not useful without a dump to view the exception record. However, knowing this is a 0xc0000005, it's likely just going to give a memory read or write failure.

0xF8989328 - The address of the context record, also not useful without a dump to view the context record. This might give up the driver, or assembly code, that caused the failure. But again, not really useful.

If you're having trouble even in safe mode, I'd have to suspect either malicious activity, or a base-level driver causing the violation. Anything on the box change recently that you're aware of that would perhaps explain this starting?

It wont even boot to safe mode, I get the same stop error. UGH yeah the power went out the other day, then this started. I ran spin rite on all of the drives and it didn't find anything so that partially rules out HDD failure....

  9. Hi guys,

I have networked drive that I connect to at work, can you guys recommend a good free program to monitor the speed of that drive. For example if I where to transfer a file to it the data on the transfer, or if I were to open a file from the networked drive on my pc what the transfer rate of that is etc.... I know its probably affected by how many users are connected, are there any free programs out there that will grab that info as well?

  10. How do I find out if I can use any different video card drivers with my card, other than the ones that are on the mfg's website?

I have a Wildcat VP 880 Pro, and my graphics card does some strange things when running Maya 8.5 - I have tried to tweek all the settings I could find and still no help, I also have the latest 3d labs drivers for my card. Since none of those are working I am wondering if there are other drivers that would function with my card, that might work?

  11. just a note can you list your current spec.....we can try and avoid making you buy a whole new setup if we know what you currently have

    Current Setup:

    Iwill DH-800 mobo

    Dual 2.8 GHz Xeon Noconas

    3.0 GB of RAM

    3d Labs VP880 Pro

    :thumbup BUMP

    Sorry :)

Right what speed does your RAM operate at??

    PC3200 (200MHz)

  12. The movie will not play in safe mode either, I can load up quick time but as soon as I do file open and select the movie the computer crashes -

As for defrag, I use diskeeper 10 server enterprise so that pretty much takes care of that.

I have two mini dump files that I tried to upload but it would not let me due to the file extension and even changing the extension to .jpg I got this error when try to add them The requested file upload failed because suitable permissions have not been enabled on the 'uploads' directory. Please contact the board administrator and inform them of this error.

At this point, it's possible it's hardware (although I am not convinced, because it does work sometimes from some locations) - I'd say the only surefire way to figure this out is to reinstall the OS, install the latest drivers for your hardware, and install ONLY quicktime. At this point I'd be very interested to see what happens from the local disk, and the same file copied to an external disk as well.

Alright I finally got around to reinstalling XP pro with the latest updates and lastest ver. of quicktime.... Same thing happens. here is the error report:

    BCCode : f4 BCP1 : 00000003 BCP2 : 897FADA0 BCP3 : 897FAF14

    BCP4 : 80604418 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

  13. Hi guys, I need a reliable raid card. I have 2 WD 74GB Raptors in RAID 0 and now I want to add some more storage. I'm probably going to end up getting a 500GB wd Sata drive, what do you guys think about this one: WD Caviar® SE16 7200 RPM

So my Iwill dh800 only had 2 built in Sata ports, which are currently being used by my raptors. So I need a sata card to expand my ports. I was thinking about this one ( [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115023] but after reading the reviews I don't know. What do you guys think? I'm not going to be using the card for a RAID just the Sata ports, I will continue to use my onboard sata ports for my raptors. So format my raptors now and then reinstall still using my onboard sata ports, when the new drive and raid card comes I can just install them...no need to reinstall my OS, right?

  14. not quite true...

The Kentsfield CPUs are more of a 'because we can' product from Intel. Fine to great on CPU-intensive tasks that are SMP-friendly and fit wholly into the on-chip cache (L2).

But with the same or slower memory bandwidth between those 4 cores and the main system ram (as compared to the E series duals), the cores on a Quad are spending a lot of time in wait state for data and instructions.

I'd save a few hundred bucks on the CPU, buy a pair of E6600s, and find a good dual cpu mobo (giving you quad cores in two chips) if you want/need that kind of potential performance and/or bragging rights.

Lets say that money is no object, then what 2 processors would you go with?

  15. Hi guys I'm looking into building a new system, and I just started to think about the processors.... I'm not sure what type of mobo I will get yet but what are the best processors currently out there? Right now I have dual Xeon Noccona processors - Are the Intel® Core™2 Quad Processors the newest thing? I do a lot of video work and After effects.... And just to sum up I'm just looking for what the newest processors are?
