  1. Latest ATI Omega Driver for Win98 is a modified Catalyst 4.2, so it won't support HD2K and HD3K. I thought as much but when I saw that page and cards supported I hoped for the best. Back to the ti4200. y not grab a cheap 9800XT?
  2. Suppose I should introduce myself, hello I am candle. I am a professional PC tech and currently opening my own shop.
  3. the issue here is cache size, the netburst gained its biggest help from L2 cache size, best advice look for a prescott P4 3.2 because the cache helps alot especially in new programs.
  4. Hmm parental controls are a possibility there where some third party tools that work on Win2k. That should do the trick you can add that specfic URL to the parental control block, and set the password to bypass the block the same as the password your AD user's use to logon
  5. It should be able to use all 4 cores fine, it limits it based on sockets not cores. XP Home is licensed for one CPU but sees 6 core's fine, and I ran Win2k on a Phenom 9650 of mine just fine and saw all 4 cores in device manager
  6. I know its a little old, but here is an idea of cards that will work in that slot with win98 drivers Radeon 9700, Radeon 9500, Radeon 9000 anything Radeon 8xxx and older GeforceFX 5800, GeforceFX 5600, GeforceFX 5500, Geforce FX 5200, Geforce Ti 4600 non SE, Ti 4400, Ti 4200 not AGP 8x card, any Geforce4MX, or Geforce3 or older have proper AGP2x support. As for upgrades for it, 440bx supports up to 1gb of Ram, and if you can find a powerleap PL-iP3/T this allows you to run up to a 1.4ghz Celeron Tutalin Processor on that 440bx. The 1.4ghz Celeron has 256k L2 and 100mhz bus, think of it as if Coppermine when to 1.4 lol. Then get 1gb of PC-100 and a Radeon 9700pro and play FarCry at medium Another good option to look for is a Radeon 9700TX, its a Radeon 9700 non pro but made for AGP 2/4 mode instead of AGP 2/4/8 and runs more stable in a 2x slot. This is a Dell OEM card but works fine, I used to have one
  7. Well im going with access because a highschool project I did involved book keeping using access's database and to auto fill recipts for accounts ect. ITs because im familiar with access. As for why not OpenOffice, I find it to preform slower than MS Office thanks to its reliance on Java, which Java is also adds another security hole. As for the raid setup, I understand the risks of an angry employee or fire ect, I did purchase a 400gb External for monthly backups. 80gb because its going to store things like an access database with tables and account info, that wont even use 80gb, the set of 2tb drives is for things like AV tools, Service packs, OS disk backups, and client data backups. As for CPU choice, I wanted to go with pure AM3 over AM2+ due to DDR2 and AM2+ stuff being EOL while AM3 and DDR3 arn't its incase something in the machine breaks i can get the parts new without paying twice the cost. As for foxit, I know its faster, but I'm also aware 90% of users won't know what foxit is, and im also aware if adobe updates PDF foxit doesnt get the update for a few weeks or months, Im going to use what a customer is comfortable with. I will preload OpenOffice on referb box's i sell simply so they have an office suite, and install it upon request for machines im working on, for minimal cost. The old dell is an OptiPlex GX-150 but has the i815 A2 stepping chipset, not all GX-150's had them. Im using the included Riva TNT2 AGP card, as Im not gonna drop alot of money on this old pc.
  8. Well i broke down instead and bought AMD Athlon II x2 245 Gigabye GA-880-UD3H 4gb DDR3 1333 2x80gb Western Digital for Raid 1 (for books, accounts ect) 2x2tb Western Digital for Raid 1 (for main server storage and customer data backups) Basic ATX Case Lite-On DVD-RW Antec EW 500W Windows 7 Professional Office 2010 Professional My grandparents loaned me 20k they cashed in a CD. Im going to use internal raid for backups. Im also considering an exteranal drive as well for this need. As for connection this will also deal with my sales ect, so this is the only bussiness machine for now. I will look into quickbooks of course, is there any good books out there to learn quickbooks with. I was considering using access to keep books on lol. Now I did buy a key card for office 2010 pro also that allows me to run 2 copies of office 2010 pro, which I will also put on this dell, which i bought another 512mb of ram for and a Tutalin Celeron 1.4 which runs fine, I couldn't find a tutalin Pentium III sadly, and I bought a copy of Windows XP Pro upgrade off of craiglist that will make this job easier of course. Now I also bought a D-Link 8 Port Switch and am taking my spare wireless router from home to go with this. I am opening an actual location. Am signing up with AT&T Bussiness DSL and Telephone which comes with 2 phone lines and 6mb DSL. This will of course be used for doing windows updates, software updates like Java, Acrobat Ready and Virus Detection files. Here is a list of the software I intend to use, incase anyone is wondering, we used these 3 programs where i worked for all tasks Malware Byte's AntiMalware ComboFix Cleanup Also we installed Microsoft Security Essentials if they didnt already have a paid anti virus program. I have now also gotten my hands on Windows 95A, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000Pro, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista 32bit, and Windows 7 32bit and 64bit, so only need to find a few more cheaply.
  9. nope. 98SE runs fine just ME lags, but i installed 98SE and all is good. As for my ME disk its Windows ME Upgrade, I used my 98 upgrade disk to do a clean install. For 98SE i simply inserted my Windows 3.1 disk lol.
  10. Ok I bought a 20 dollar Dell PC. Pentium 3 1.0, 512mb PC133, Intel 815 IGP, 20gb HD (swaping in a 120gb Drive), CD-RW drive. Now it has a Windows 2000 CoA so I can install 2k back on to it and intend to do so. What i need to know is this will be used to keep track of my customers accounts, my book keeping, and as the sales terminal. This is for my computer store im putting together. What are some good cheap or free software just for this, and what tweaks ect can I do to 2000 to make the system more secure from outside contact? But it will be on the shops network for obvious reasons.
  11. Not a bad idea, I will look there, but last time i wanted to buy a Windows 95 disk they where asking 60 bucks for them, and that seems a little much for a reinstall disk lol
  12. Ok I'm opening a computer store, signed my lease this morning. Now I worked in a shop for the last 4 years and decided to move into my own, as I didn't like the way we treated customers there. Now we had a set of system disks, for Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows NT4, Windows 2000, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Pro, MCE 2005, Vista 32bit, Vista 64bit, Windows 7 all versions. Now I have personal copies of 98SE, ME, XP Home, XP Pro, MCE 2005, Vista 32bit and Vista 64bit. But NT 4.0, 2000, and 98FE are well hard to come by. But Where can i find a copy of 98FE, NT 4.0 and 2000 cheaply, I need them only as reinstall Media, I don't need key's, just disks so if they have there COA but forget there media i can work on the system. Any ideas? And I talked to the OEM Distributor i signed up with I can only get Windows 7 and Server 2008, so getting a set of older disks for this is out of the question. As for any confusion, this is not for pirating, anyone that works in a shop knows what im talking about and why these kind of disk's are needed. I worked on quite a few older box's working there, I even got the great displeasure of troubleshooting a Windows 3.1 system a church used for its media program that wouldn't work on 95 or newer. So these old disks while not urgent will most likly crop up, and telling a customer I can't fix it because they don't have the original disk and just the key code means i loose bussiness.
  13. no IRQ conflicts, checked that first. No abnormal IRQ conflicts. VGA and ATA controllers are assigned to unique IRQ's like normal. I'm just going to install 98 on here.
  14. No, because you've got the same results with plain vanilla ME on the 10GB HDD. It totally beats me. the only thing that might affect that is the 10gb is a 4200RPM Quantum drive while the Western Digital is a 7200. The Quantum is ATA33 while this is ATA100
  15. HD is running normal, and has DMA enabled which is default, and the drive does support DMA mode lol. The controller is the 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller, and the primary and secondary PIO are intel aswell not generic. Though floopy disk A is running in combatabilty mode which is very odd considering i have my floopy drive disabled as it's broke, and in bios i have the floppy shutoff lol. Could it be my 80gb is multi partitioned with 20gb FAT32 and the other 60gb is NTFS for running XP on. Also running 512mb with 8mb sent to video so 502mb of system ram
  16. lags like crazy, didnt ghost 98, as it's not critical to anything lol, but ME lags like nuts but 98SE like i said ran fine, thats 100% clean no drivers, no nothing. Lag continues with installing drivers. Lags on such things as opening the windows start bar, opening the documents folder or my computer. It eludes reason to me. and that was with the 10gb reformated and ME installed with the ME disk.
  17. no Western Digital ATA100 80gb. I installed the Intelchipset inf untilitly, so the proper 845g drivers are loaded. Which I will add hunting down drivers for this Deminsion 2400 wasnt easy, im using HP sound card drives, an Abit USB2.0 driver, intels one IGP driver and chipset driver lol. now oddly i tried 98SE out with my 10gb Hard Drive and 98SE simply flies, so this doesnt make alot of sense to me. I might just install 98SE if i cant solve this, but im one of the weirdo's that liked ME
  18. Ok so this i am totally unable to explain. Me worked fine on my P3, it also ran great years ago on an XP1900+ but on this P4 2.0 it lags, kinda like im tring to use it again on a Pentium1. Anyone know the issue here? Installed the ME Service Pack, KernalEX, MP10, and Revolution Pack 9, it speed up a little with these but still lags if i do anything. The only other programs installed are Firefox2 and winrar so far.
  19. You know im loving this, got my Dell 2400 installed with Windows ME for some games that have issues with XP, eating CPU to 100% but only in 2k and XP lol. But I have a second desktop that im actully tring to sell, it uses 2k, mainly because I'm selling it and the key is already on the case. But is there a similar thing out there for 2k, i like the ease of use with this on my ME/XP box and just wondering if anyone made something simiar for 2k Also this isnt to fool anyone into thinking its more than 2k, its advertised as 2k, its just ive noticed people are attracted to shiny
