  1. I haven't made much use out of VLC, since VLC is no longer upgradable. But I have found other useful media player upgrades, such as 1. Upgrading Windows Media Player using 98MP10: Unofficial Windows Media Player 10.0 (WMP10) 2. Enabling Windows Media Player to play audio using the Bass codecs. See 3. Installing the AIMP audio player (version 2.51.330). Note, newer versions of AIMP may work if your computer uses a Pentium III or higher processor. See
  2. DC BASS Source Filter 1.2 is a Direct Show filter, permitting Direct Show media players, such as Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic, to use the Bass audio codecs. The DC BASS Source Filter is included in several modern codec packs, such as K-Lite and Vista Codec Package (packages designed for Windows XP and above). A more recent DC BASS Source Filter (i.e. "1.3") is also available, and may work if your computer uses a Pentium III or higher processor. To run, the DC BASS Source Filter requires "WINXP" compatibility under KernelEx. The entry must be made manually to the Windows Registry, for example Registry Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\KernelEx\AppSettings\Configs] Name Value (DWord): "C:\\Program Files\\DirectShow\\DC Bass Source\\DCBassSource.ax" Data Value: "WINXP" The DC BASS Source Filter is a component of the "DirectShow FilterPack (DSFP)", from which the filter can be extracted. The "DirectShow FilterPack (DSFP)" also includes Softella's Direct Show filter manager software "DSFM". This program also should be extracted. Obtain "DC BASS Source Filter 1.2" from "DirectShow FilterPack 3.33" at http://www.freewaregeeks.com/index.php?page=detail&get_id=983&category=36 . Or obtain "DC BASS Source Filter 1.2" from "DirectShow FilterPack 3.34" at http://bstdownload.com/reviews/directshow-filterpack-3/ . Or obtain "DC BASS Source Filter 1.3" from "DirectShow FilterPack" author at http://reino.degeelebosch.nl/ . Note the batch files, included in the filter pack for the "DC BASS Source Filter", are designed to register/unregister the filter in Windows XP. Modify the batch files to run in Win 98/me, as follows: Batch file entry to register the filter: %WINDIR%\system\regsvr32.exe DCBassSource.ax Batch file entry to unregister the filter: %WINDIR%\system\regsvr32.exe /U DCBassSource.ax Or else, use the Softella filter manager program to register/unregister the filter.
  3. The latest Real Player for Win9x is 10.5GOLD. Real Player uses different Codecs than Real Alternative uses, and the program's author, Real Media, does download additional Codecs, if available, and as needed. So, you might want to try Real Player 10.5, to see if it plays your newer Real Media files. Note that you should uninstall Real Alternative, if present, before installing Real Player. Also, for a clean Real Player user interface, try the Banane University skin, rather than the default skin. If Real Player 10.5 does not work, you might try a later version of Real Player, running under KernelX.
  4. Try using "CSLite" --Firefox cookies manager addon to prevent unwanted cookies in the first place. And try using Nirsoft's "Mozilla Cookies View" --Cookies Manager to delete unwanted cookies should they occur.

  6. You should run the network setup wizard on your XP computer (Open "Control Panel", then "Network and Internet Connections", then "Set up or change your home or small office network"). Depending on your configuration, you also may have to create a floppy disk, in Windows XP, from which floppy disk you can run the network setup wizard on your Windows 98SE computer. You may also have to adjust your firewall settings in XP and/or 98SE.
  7. I know. Although I've never owned a K6-III+, I've been interested in it, way back when. Then again, you failed to read the Application Note I've posted a link to properly: it contains a utility to chech that... here's the direct download link: cpuid_ex. So just download the .zip, extract the .exe, run it in a DOS Box, and we all shall know for sure! You're the only one around owning a K6-III+, so you're the only one who can do it and post the results here for all of us to know it. Is my CPU really that exotic? I guess it is like the mythical DAF car that although it was not really fast, can run backwards as fast as forward. Ok, here is the result of my K6-3+/400: H:\myTemp>cpuid_ex features = 000009b7 CPU supports CPUID: y CPU supports CPUID STD: y CPU supports CPUID EXT: y CPU supports TSC: y CPU supports CMOV: n CPU supports MMX: y CPU supports 3DNOW: y CPU supports 3DNOW_EXT: y CPU supports AMD-K6-MTRR: y CPU supports P6-MTRR: n CPU supports SSE MMX: n CPU supports SSE FPU: n Here is the result, from running cpuid_ex, for my K6-2/550: features = 000008b7 CPU supports CPUID: y CPU supports CPUID STD: y CPU supports CPUID EXT: y CPU supports TSC: y CPU supports CMOV: n CPU supports MMX: y CPU supports 3DNOW: y CPU supports 3DNOW_EXT: n CPU supports AMD-K6-MTRR: y CPU supports P6-MTRR: n CPU supports SSE MMX: n CPU supports SSE FPU: n Note the major difference between the K6-2 and K6-3 processors is that the K6-3 supports an extension of the 3DNow instruction set. (My understanding is that 3DNow provides some of the functionality of the SSE instruction set to the AMD K6 processors). So, some programs which run successfully on the K6-3 may not run successfully on the K6-2 (like GOM Player?). And, programs which run successfully on the K6-2 or K6-3 (because of 3DNow) may not run successfully on the Pentium II (no SSE) (like some versions of Flash on YouTube?).
  8. The latest MPC version is 6.4.9.1 (available in both unicode and non-unicode(win9x) versions here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/ ). To try MPC version 6.4.9.1, download and unzip MPC version 6.4.9.1 to a different folder from where you've installed your MPC version 6.4.8.4 program. You may also be able to try the unicode version of MPC 6.4.9.1 under Kernelex, again from a separate folder (you may also have to disable all or some of MPC's internal filters). When playing FLV test files in MPC, I noted the DirectShow filters, "ffdshow" and "AC3Filter" were both running. You already have ffdshow. AC3Filter ver 1.63b (for win9x), if needed for MPC and WMP, is available here: http://ac3filter.net/ .
  9. GOM Player works fine on Windows 98 without Kernel EX installed. Several programs that run successfully on Pentium III or better processors, have issues when run on K6 or Pentium II processors (with or without Kernelex). For example, it has been several years since a version of the GOM Player has run successfully on my K6-2 computer. Similarly, recent versions of Videolan(VLC) will not run on my computer, even with Kernelex installed. CyberyogiCoWindler, "As my main media player I got GOM Player 2,1,21,4846 (Unicode) to work, but I have to disable the built-in codecs ... " GOM, Media Player Classic("MPC"), and Windows Media Player("WMP") are all DirectShow media players. If you've disabled GOM Player's built-in codecs, GOM is using "ffdshow_rev1936" and other DirectShow filters, splitters, and codecs to play all media files. "A big benefit of GOM is that it also plays slightly damaged FLV files from YouTube, those refuse to play on MediaPlayer Classic." For DirectShow players, if a needed DirectShow filter/splitter or codec is missing or the wrong version, your media file will not play correctly and/or the player may crash. And, if multiple codecs are installed to play the same audio or video format, the DirectShow player generally uses the codec with the highest Window's priority or "merit" setting. MPC includes many internal DirectShow filters and codecs, which filters take priority over external filters. Thus, if a video file plays correctly in GOM, but does not play correctly in MPC, try disabling the related internal DirectShow filter in MPC to fix the problem. Also, make sure you've installed the latest version of MPC that's compatible with Windows 98 and your K6 processor (available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/Media%20Player%20Classic/6.4.9.1/mplayerc_20081005_win9x.zip/download'>http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/Media%20Player%20Classic/6.4.9.1/mplayerc_20081005_win9x.zip/download ). "I got GOM Player 2,1,21,4846 (Unicode) to work, but I ... must not change the screen ratio(?) setting because this crashes GOM as soon I play any videos." There are several DirectShow alternatives to GOM to choose from, that run on Windows 98 computers with a K6 processor-- and that won't crash when you change the screen ratio. These include perhaps a prior version of GOM Player, MPC, and WMP. Also, Winamp can play video files with DirectShow, using its DirectShow plugin (I use Winamp version 5.33 with the WINAMP5_Classified_v5.5 skin). Note that MPC's Internal DirectShow filters, compatible with Windows 98 and your K6 processor, are available for download and installation externally: (available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/ ). Use of these DirectShow filters is recommended, to spread the functionality of MPC to other media players using DirectShow (such as Winamp and WMP). These external MPC DirectShow filters do not come with an installer. To install, unzip the downloaded file(s) to folder(s) in Windows (say "C:\Program Files\DirectShow\___"). Register each of these new filters using a batch file; or use a DirectShow filter manager, such as "DSFM" (available here: http://www.softella.com/dsfm/index.en.htm ), or RadLight Filter Manager (available here: http://www.free-codecs.com/RadLight_Filter_Manager_download.htm ). "VLC 0.8.6i here makes almost no sync problems despite it jerks noticeably." To fix this problem, try VLC 0.8.6d in both computers, with Kernelex disabled in the program's Properties Compatibility tab.
  10. I've had this happen to me several times, each time for a different reason (all hardware related): Check the PS-2 cable connection(s). They may be loose or bad. Sometimes removing and replacing the mouse several times may fix the problem. And/or clean the connection(s) with an electronic spray cleaner. Replacing the mouse may fix the problem. The PS-2 port on the computer may be dirty or bad. If cleaning the port doesn't fix the problem, fix by using a USB mouse or install a PS-2 expansion board.
  11. The latest version of Winamp that I run on Windows 98SE is 5.33. Versions after 5.33 I found to be unstable and/or bloated on my very old computer equipment. Version 5.33 requires unicode, so be sure that unicows.dll can be found in the Winamp folder of your Windows 98SE computer. You indicated that your computer was run offline. If so, Winamp would not be able to download missing or addtional codecs during installation. Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a is available from http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE , as well as downloads of additional and more recent updates. Neither Service Pack 2.1 nor Service Pack 2.1a include security and other updates for Internet Explorer. Thus, also consider downloading Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 from Microsoft or mdgx.com. Also consider downloading the "Unofficial Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 SP1 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME Cumulative" 7-24-2010 update available from http://www.mdgx.com/upd98me.php . (Note Winamp 5.33 includes a built-in browser that uses the IE engine. Thus, to operate, Winamp 5.33 may or may not require a minimum version of IE also be installed). Another list of resources, including driverpacks, can be found at http://www.mdgx.com/upd98me.php .
  12. I currently use the latest version of Opera (10.61) on my 98SE computer. KernelEx 4.5 beta 2 is installed, but for Opera 10.61, I have neither disabled KernelEx, nor have I selected Windows XP SP2 or other specific compatibility mode. On versions of Opera prior to 10.60, KernelEx was disabled (in Opera's Properties Compatibility tab) to keep Opera from crashing. So, versions of Opera prior to 10.60 may have had compatibility issues with KernelEX. Thanks for pointing out that Flash in KernelEX was configured by default to run in Windows XP SP2 specific compatibility mode. My Opera browser only runs Flash with Adobe Flash Player 9x installed, whereas my Firefox 3.5 and Prism browsers only run Flash with Adobe Flash Player 10x installed. My solution was to run two versions of Flash, depending on the browser. But perhaps Opera can run Adobe Flash Player 10x after all, if my KernelEX installation is configured differently. I'm adding investigating this possibility to my "to do" list.
  13. mst3kpimp, My recollection is that "Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.1a" includes a number of 98SE tweaks, such as replacing the "defrag.exe" file from Windows 98SE with the updated "defrag.exe" from Windows ME. The "Unofficial Service Pack 3 (beta 4)" may or may not include the same tweaks. So I recommend installation of SP 2.1a first, whether or not you install SP 3(beta 4). I also recall that SP 2.1a creates or modifies the [VCache] MaxFileCache entry in the "system.ini" file. If so, by installing SP 2.1a, you won't have to modify the "system.ini" file manually. "MaxFileCache=393216" is a fairly safe setting for most 98SE computers, but may not be optimum. For example, my 98SE computer is set at "MaxFileCache=457216". When you open and then close programs on your computer, Windows 98SE will save or cache the closed programs in memory, up to the "MaxFileCache" entry (making reloading faster for these previously closed programs). If the "MaxFileCache" is absent or set too high, Windows may create such a large cache, that memory management problems may start to occur, especially for computers using more than 512MB of RAM. Memory that Windows uses for "MaxFileCache" is also used by AGP video (how much depends on the system bios settings of "AGP Aperture"). If "AGP Aperture" is set at minimum or very low in the BIOS settings (or disabled in Windows), "MaxFileCache" can be increased. If "AGP Aperture" is set at maximum or very high in the BIOS settings, "MaxFileCache" should be decreased. For computers using less than 512MB of RAM, "MaxFileCache" also should be decreased.
  14. The unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.1a was certainly a worthwhile install on my 98SE computer (running more than 512 MB of RAM). However, Service Pack 2.1a is also available from http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE , as well as downloads of additional and more recent updates. Service Pack 2.1a does not include security and other updates for Internet Explorer. Thus, also consider downloading the "Unofficial Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 SP1 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME Cumulative" 7-24-2010 update available from http://www.mdgx.com/upd98me.php . There are several discussions of 98SE's RAM limitations on this forum. View by entering "98SE RAM limitation" in the MSFN Search field.
  15. larryb123456, My previous post was a response only to disagree with this portion of what you said in post #1: "When I suggested trying the "copy and paste" of the NPSWF32.dll from the Flash folder to the plugins folder, the person helping me on the Adobe Flash forum advised me against it, saying it might make matters worse. I never tried it, since I respected this person's expertise." Note I copied three files from the Flash installation folder in "C:/Windows/System/Macromed\Flash" to each browser's plugin folder, not just the "NPSWF32.dll" file: flashplayer.xpt NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe NPSWF32.dll For my Windows 98SE computer, I'm using Flash 9.0.277.0 for Opera 10.61 and using Flash 10.0.45.2(with kernelex) for the Firefox 3.5 and Prism browsers. There were/are no issues running either Flash version, including running Flash on YouTube. So, I don't understand (and have no suggestions) why you're unable to use a Flash version newer than Flash Player 9.0.47.0.
  16. I speak from ignorance of FF3, being quite happy with FF2, but I wonder if it is the setting shown in the Tab Mix Plus add-on as Links | Open links from other applications in: | [New Window][New Tab][Current Tab] That will put something into about:config but I haven't been exploring, so can't say what. Thanks! North of Watford though its a very dynamic add-on sadly it didn't allow me to open an external link, I even tried upgrading to 3.6 from 3.5.11 to use another add-on called "Restore Open_External" and that failed :-( I have copies of the registry to compare the FF2 and FF3 installs and there's nothing there that would suggest anything either so now I am going to compare the .ini and .js files from each install i.e. the pref.js as seen in about:config to see what gives... lastly I will try the latest FF beta to see if that will help. For creating desktop shortcuts to web pages, I highly recommend the standalone version of Prism (Prism 1.0b4 available from http://prism.mozillalabs.com./ ). For more information on this Gecko-based browser, see my post 558 above.
  17. larryb123456, I recommend you copy all plugins, including Flash, to the Firefox plugin folder. On startup, Firefox first looks for plugins in its plugin folder. If a plugin is not found there, Firefox will then scan your hard drive attempting to find the plugin elsewhere. So at the very least, unnecessary scans are avoided, and performance thus is increased, by putting copies of Flash and other common plugins in the Firefox plugin folder. (Note this recommendation is for older versions of Windows run on older computers only). Even after copying all installed plugins to Firefox's plugin folder, Firefox will scan your hard drive for other plugins that were not installed. To avoid these scans, open the Firefox config file (type "about:config" in the Firefox browser's web address field). Search for the config "plugin.scan.plid.dll" and change its boolean value to false. You can also disable other plugins in Firefox 2, such as "plugin.scan.Acrobat", by changing its string value in about:config to "99" and not copying the plugin to the Firefox plugin folder. (Note, you may want to backup your Firefox profile before changing the config file. If you're uncomfortable changing the Firefox config file, with or without a profile backup, skip this config file modification). It's been a while since I've used Netscape. But it too should benefit from copying Flash to the Netscape plugin folder. Opera routinely uses the plugins from the Firefox plugins folder, so making another copy in the Opera plugins folder should not be necessary. Note also, by copying each plugin to each browser's plugin folder, you can use different versions of the plugin for different browsers. For example, you can use a different version of the Flash plugin in Firefox than the version of Flash you use in Netscape.
  18. Some DSL and cable modems are actually combo devices, combining a router and modem in the same enclosure. But your DSL modem appears to be only a simple DSL modem, designed for use only with Verizon (see http://www.westell.com/liteline-proline-model-6100/f90-610015-06-2.html ). Google "F90-610015-06" for lots of other information on this modem. Apparently, your dsl modem configuration can be viewed, but not adjusted, using Internet Explorer or other browser (for a "how to" see http://text.broadbandreports.com/forum/r20957298-Linksys-WRT54G-Westell-F9061001506-Success . Note that the Linksys router's default WEB address (http://192.168.1.1/) is the same as your Westell DSL modem's WEB address and will have to be changed prior to use. Similarly, other routers may also use http://192.168.1.1/ as their default WEB addresses, and thus their WEB addresses also would have to be changed). I currently use an old Linksys router, which I purchased used for less than $10, then modernized or updated the firmware from the Linksys website. Linksys routers are well documented and supported on the Linksys website and easily configurable (e.g. pings and port 113 were disabled by opening the router configuration menus in my browser and checking the appropriate checkbox). But other leading brand browsers may also do the job. Also, the router does not have to be the newest or high-speed (1000 mb}, unless all other devices on the network are high-speed. The GRC Shields Up "Ping Test" is important because, although your firewall may or may not block "all unsolicited in-bound packets", the better security is to remain invisible on the Internet to all unsolicited and potentially malicious probes. If your computer responds to an unsolicited probe with a ping, the prober now knows you're there and your IP address. Some software firewalls use more resources than other software firewalls, so resource use may have to be considered on older computers. But, for example, I've used Sygate firewall software on an old 286 Mhz computer, with no observable degradation in performance. And, if you're running a peer-to-peer or home network, the software firewall can be configured to allow certain traffic on the home network (such as printer or file sharing), while restricting traffic, on the same physical network, to/from the Internet. Also, software firewalls are important to prevent unwanted outgoing traffic from your computer, particularly from newly installed software, whose initial behavior after installation may or may not be welcome (such as, calling home or opening up a WEB page after installation, or attempting to update the software to a newer version, or downloading and installing additional software). Some software attempt to open a WEB page in Internet Explorer, even though IE is not my default browser. A software firewall can block IE from being used by such software.
  19. JorgeA, How quickly did SuperAntiSpyware's definition database load, and how quickly did SuperAntiSpyware scan compared to Spybot?
  20. There are two versions of MPC 6.4.9.1, one of which runs on win9x/me, the other for win2000 and above. Here is a link to the MPC author's site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/. Or download the win9x/me version directly from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/Media%20Player%20Classic/6.4.9.1/mplayerc_20081005_win9x.zip/download MPC is a directshow player, and thus uses Windows Media Player codecs to play windows media. Since the problems you are having are with playing windows media, and not some other formats, MPC thus may not correct the problem. Instead, I would recommend Videolan (VLC), which is not directshow and uses its own internal codecs to play windows media and lots of other formats as well. The last version of VLC to run on win 9x/me is vlc-0.8.6d-win32. This older version of VLC can be downloaded from http://filehippo.com/download_vlc/tech/3516/ . I would also recommend that you try to fix Windows Media Player. First run an antivirus program, if you have one installed. Then do a complete backup of your harddrive, including a backup of the Windows Registry. Then visit the Microsoft update site, to update your Windows Media Player and download and install the latest WMP security updates and codecs for WMP version 9. You may also consider downloading and installing the WMP 9 program, itself, over your existing WMP 9 (i.e. reinstall WMP 9, but do NOT uninstall your old version of WMP).
  21. Are you sure of your jumper settings? From your description, you may have set your jumpers over the two pins in the right-most column, which on my WD drive is the default position of cable select, as follows: OOOOX POWER OOOOX PLUG This will work if your master hard drive is also set to cable select, and both drives are correctly positioned on the cable (If your cable is not marked otherwise, position your master drive at the end connector of the cable. Position your slave drive at the middle connector). To set my WD drive to slave, I set my jumper as follows: OOOXO POWER OOOXO PLUG You didn't say what your master drive was. But, if it is another WD drive, jumper settings may have to be changed, depending on whether the WD drive is a single drive on the cable, or a master drive with slave attached. Here are the settings I use for a single drive: OOO0O POWER OOXXO PLUG And here are the settings I use for my WD set up as a master drive: OOXOO POWER OOXOO PLUG Note that these are jumper settings for a WD model different than yours. Thus, you should verify, for yourself, the jumper settings for specific models of both your master and slave hard drives, before making any changes.
  22. JorgeA, The unofficial SP2 does NOT include all the updates available on the MS site from Windows Update. Users of the "Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2)" should thus go to Windows Update, after installing SP2, to complete the process. (The major omissions from SP2 are updates relating to IE and WMP, but I recall there may have been 1 or 2 others). My understanding also is that some, but NOT all security updates for Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 are available through Windows Update for win9x/me. Later security updates for Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 must be downloaded and installed from those SP1 updates made available for Windows 2000. Or, much more conveniently, use Unofficial Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 Component Update (MDIE6CU) 3.2 for Windows 98 SE (http://www.mdgx.com/spx/MDIE6CU.EXE}, a cumulative compilation of all IE 6 SP1 updates.
  23. Net Framework, once installed, can be very difficult to remove, as noted by dencorso. A handy tool, and last resort for removing Net Framework, is the utility "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool". Explanation of the tool and download links can be found at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx . Also note, that included in Internet Options for Internet Explorer, Security options, is provision to enable or disable Net Framework. For the clean installs of Windows 98se I did recently, I used the "Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2)" as a timesaver, to install all the updates quickly and all at once. Then I went to Windows Update to complete the process. Since you've already downloaded all the critical updates from Windows Update, installing the unofficial SP2 is not necessary, but still recommended, since some of the tweaks in SP2 are not found in Windows Update (such as, the improved defrag, the powertoy "Tweak UI", and perhaps other updated file and configuration changes. However, all the additional tweaks in SP2 can be downloaded and installed separately, if you prefer. "Microsoft DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces (APIs) for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms" (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX). An explanation of SP3 Beta's can be found at http://www.htasoft.com/sesp30b4-en.txt . The explanation includes several caveats and cautions, such as, "This version contains patched ESDI_506.PDR, so be careful." So yes, I would stick with the stable release of SP2, or not install SP2 or SP3.
  24. JorgeA-- I don't think you should install any of the non-critical updates. In particular, applications which require Net framework to run probably require Windows XP or higher, as well as a version of Net above 1.1. You should find all the updates you need for Windows 98SE at http://www.mdgx.com/upd98me.php, especially: 1. Unofficial Daylight Savings Time Update for Windows 9x at 4-25-2010: http://www.mdgx.com/files/DST_9XME.EXE . 2. Unofficial Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 Component Update (MDIE6CU) 3.2 for Windows 98 SE installs all current MS IE 6.0 SP1 updates + security fixes at 4-23-2010: http://www.mdgx.com/spx/MDIE6CU.EXE (IMPORTANT) 3. Consider Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2) installs ALL previously released Hotfixes, Patches + Updates (free) at http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE : http://www.mdgx.com/spx/SESP21A.EXE Note the Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes all the updates you've already downloaded from Windows Update (except for IE and WMP), plus a few more (such as an updated defrag program from Windows ME). (For updates to Windows 98 FE, see http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE (98 SP2: Unofficial Windows 98 Service Pack 2 (SP2) 2.5.6 upgrades Windows 98 Standard Edition [First Edition (FE)/Gold/RTM] to Windows 98 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and installs ALL previously released Hotfixes, Patches + Updates (free)): http://www.mdgx.com/spx/98FESP2.EXE ) 4. For Windows Media Player (WMP), you have a few choices (See http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm ): a. Do nothing. b. First, if you are going to use and update WMP, install Windows Media Player 9 (for 98se) and all related security updates from the Microsoft site. You may also consider downloading and installing the WMP updated codec file. c. Next, consider installing 98MP10: Unofficial Windows Media Player 10.0 (WMP10) XP + XP SP3 WMP9 + XP SP1 IE 6.0 SP1 Killer Replacements for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME: http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98MP10.EXE Note if you install 98MP10, you should not install WMP9URP, and vice versa. d.Next, if you did not install 98MP10, consider installing WMP9URP December 2009 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME: http://www.mdgx.com/spx/MP9URP9X.EXE
  25. The Orban AAC/AACPlus plugin is the best way to play AACPlus media files in Windows Media Player or other directshow player.
