  2. I get some kind of 80's smooth jazz when I call in, and it seems like thats what I get every time. I even got it for a few seconds when I called in this morning.
  3. Does she ever have any problems checking her email on her cheap computer? If not then I'd call it a deal.
  4. Firewall off, services installed, thats why I came here. Like I said, goes to the internet, can access the router firmware, but the computers on the network cannot ping the laptop, and the laptop cannot ping any other computer on the network. Also, when I go to change the computer name, the workgroup box is gray. I have also tried running a winsock fix, installed the latest drivers for both network cards, all settings at default.
  5. I am having an odd problem with a Toshiba laptop. Ethernet or wireless, I can get an IP adress, ping the router, and even go online, but the machine WILL NOT acess the others on the network. It assigns a standard IP adress (192.168.4.115), but when I try to access another computer on the network (\\192.168.4.101), can't connect. When I try to ping the other computer from the laptop, 100% loss, same if I ping the laptop from the desktop.
  6. I will probably never own another Dell, but I own an Inspiron 1100 laptop, and it runs great, no complaints. As for the desktops, once again I'll never own one, but I have no complaints with them either. I run a computer repair shop in the Dallas area, and I have to say that Dell is the easiest machine to work on. The service tag makes it effortless to find all the drivers you need.
  7. I just had to do my daily call to the Microsoft activation center, and I started to wonder, does anybody out there know their hold playlist?
  8. I'm running IE7B2, and today I upgraded my internet from a 4mb line to an 8mb line. When I use Newsbin to download from easynews I get the full 8mb (1.1MB), but when I download with IE I can only get about 300KB. Is there some kind of setting somewhere that is capping my connection through IE?
  9. Ya, I gave MS a call today and they wanted $35 to talk to somebody that wasnt reading out of a manual.
  10. When I try to install IE7 on my fresh install of MCE05 I get the following error: Why did it not validate? You have encountered an unknown error. Please contact your local product support team for further assistance with this issue. I've never had this problem before, what would make this happen?
  11. I've had this problem too, the way i've found to fix it is to rename the file to uxtheme0.dll, and then add the new file.
  12. Does anyone still have the info on how to create a custom GUI setup screen for windows xp? I've been searching all night, and I remember seeing the info here, but can not find it anywhere. And also, I've had a hard time finding info on how to create custom login screens. Its true that the internet is full of usefull information, but unfortunatley its full of complete worthlessness too.
  13. Well, I dont think we can share ISOs here, but what you can try to do is download SP2 from microsoft, save it to something like C:\sp2\SP2.exe, then go to the run dialog and run c:\sp2\sp2.exe /u: /x:c:\sp2\files After that, burn a cd with the i386 folder in it. That sould solve your problem. Or possibly, just put youre first cd back in...
  14. Ya, I saw on another board someone had posted with a question and suggestion, but said that it only worked on 2K. He said that when you try to do this in XP it automaticly re-loads everything. 1. Load everything on your master image system, including all applications and what not. Setup the NTFS permissions and such as well. 2. Replace the IDE controller drivers with the Standard Dual channel PCI IDE Controller, and reboot so this driver is in place, instead of the system specific drivers. **This step is important** 3. Finally open Device manager and under System Devices Uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System. Do Not Restart when asked. Uninstall the few remaining devices that you can uninstall without restarting. 4. Shutdown the system and make a ghost image of this. Any other suggestions?
  15. I dont know, I've had WDS out of the box, and Maxtors out of the box... WDS all crashed, Maxtors have all be running for about 3 years each now...
  16. I dont know how, but a friend of mine made a Windows XP Ghost image that could ghost onto any system. Problem is that he didnt sysprep it and I didnt like most of the programs on the image. I would ask him how, but I've had a hard time getting to him. Anyway, does anyone know how to make a universal XP or 2K image?
  17. Ya, when I fix computers I refuse to install anything lower than 2K. And if they dont want to isntall an NTOS, then I'm gone. But I would say the worst os next to the 9x series would be XP Home
  18. Eh, no new news to me... It seems pretty logical considering if you look at Windows XP SP1 cd the files on the 2003 cd look exactly the same... But that makes me wonder... What do you think would happen if you took the files that defines 2003 as an advanced server and migrated them over to an xp installation cd? Think you would unlock the secret XP server systems? Or just end up with disks that have errors on them?
  19. Ah, good old WD... I think 6 weeks is a long life for a western digital... Should have gone maxtor... Anyway, I say run it in SATA mode, and make a new windows xp cd instead of using your dell restore disk. The dell restore disks have all your drives on them, but theyre also packed with spyware.
  20. Ok, well, if you really want to run the isntall from hdd then there is a way I just thaught of. Try gettng the HDD, and putting dos as the bootable OS on it. Then have an autoexec.bat file set to auto run i386\winnt.exe and that should work. Only problem is that thats going to take a long a** time to write the winnt.exe unattended file. But running from hard drive wouldnt really help your speed that much. It should only increase by a few mbps, and would only help you in txtsetup mode. Same with network install, but the advantage of a network install is that you save yourself from media. But to install from the network like you were talking about I'm pretty sure you would need 2K/3 server.
  21. Over the network with RIS I'm pretty sure you're going to have 2k/2k3 server. But ya, its easy to install from hard drive, theres just one problem I've come across. If you have a hard drive to use just for installations then you can do a fresh install of windows, and make a ghost image on that drive. Problem is that if you try to ghost to a computer with a different motherboard, its going to blue screen.
  22. What FS are you using on all you're drives? No idea why but that could have something to do with it... Also have you had the same problems plugging the devices into USB1.1 ports?
  23. I've got a pda. and for the last 2 months its been sitting on the table in my livingroom. So I finally plugged it in after all this time because of my girlfriend's nagging, and discovered the usefulness of AvantGo. I started messing around, noticed that when I go to google, it goes to http://www.google.com/palm, and mapquest has a "Save to PDA" option that saves your directions to AvantGo, which then uploads them to your pda when you sync. I was thinking it would be extremley usefull if msfn got the AvantGo feature to upload their news automaticly to PDAs.
