  1. I have considered setting up a router for dialup as I don't want another box on 24/7 between the noise and power usage. I looked at few routers capable of OpenWRT with usb (to share a printer and UPS) but the cost was prohibitive after the router + serial modem + serial to usb adapter. What few serial modems are still around are very expensive (particularly the courier - yikes). I've tried several usb modems in vain to try and find one that works with OS X and is as reliable as my USR hardware modem but they all seemed to be awful. 14.4k awful and dropping out very regularly. It also looked like I'd probably have to roll my own OpenWRT with some specific kernel modules and drivers so I ended up going back to XP when Vista was released and I first hit this problem.
  2. Preface: Please - no snarky comments about getting a better connection. Living with this garbage dialup for what must be fifteen years I'm well aware how bad I need broadband. 3g is capped at a sad 3gb/mo with rather spotty coverage and satellite is expensive for a 250mb/day cap when its not rained or snowed out. No line of sight for anything else. That leaves dialup which I manage to pull down ~12gb/mo on... I'm stuck here with no viable alternatives for the foreseeable future. Moving on to the problem at hand: I am encountering frequent data corruption on every machine on my network other than the host with ICS enabled on my dialup connection. Websites are garbled characters, streaks and blocks are all over images, encrypted connections throw SSL errors out constantly and downloads fail their checksums. The internet is basically unusable on any of the machines on my network sharing the connection (an older windows xp box and my macbook pro). Everything works fine on the host machine though. Just to be clear the data corruption is only when using the internet with ICS. All other network activity such as large file transfers between computers on the network manage to complete without issue and do not fail their checksums. Without ICS the internet is just fine - no problems outside of the usual dialup factor. I've tried ICS with clean installs of both Windows 7 and Vista SP2 - both suffer the same problem. I've tested this with a 3g modem to rule out dialup/my modem (US Robotics 5610B) being the issue and it has the exact same problem with ICS. If I boot Windows XP Pro SP3 on the host machine and use it for ICS there is no data corruption and everything works fine on the networked machines. The only thing I could find searching was this thread with a few others encountering the same issue and no solution: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/235878-4...data-corruption No third party firewalls or anti-virus software. Tried it with and without the Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials - no different. Also tried using the default ip addresses/subnet that enabling ICS assigns instead of 10.x.x.x - no difference unfortunately. ipconfig /all on windows 7: http://janpingel.com/misc/files/ipconfig-w7.txt network map: http://janpingel.com/misc/files/network.png
  3. Today I recieved a rather unexpected critical stop while working away on my desktop doing the same thing I do every day of the year (ftp, ssh, txt editing, browsing, irc, im). For whatever reason it did not generate a log in event viewer as they usually tend to. There has been no recent updates or installations in the past month or so other than this and last month's automatic updates. However, I did remove kaspersky antivirus from the system the other day in preperation for getting around to moving over to Nod32. Fired up windows debugger and checked the minidump. I doubt the OS component, win32k.sys in this case, is at fault unless the most recent updates or kaspersky's uninstaller broke something. Any chance I can figure out what driver passed a bad instruction when calling win32k.sys from this dump? http://ankle.sinistrals.net/misc/files/Mini122706-01.dmp Here are the loaded modules:
  4. It was up for testing for some time but it seems to be the standard update site in sp2 now.
  5. That's what I did. Considering a format and clean install with sp2 slipstreamed has all folders display readonly as both checked and greyed out I'd say it's a display bug in sp2 with the properties dialog for sure. Every install I've done encounered it as has Yavar and Kagaku and some friends who recently upgraded also seem to have the same thing happen with all folders.
  6. Admin group is the owner, tried setting my own account as owner, same thing. Full control is set to my account and admin group.
  7. This isn't crippiling, just irritating display bug that I've come across with every SP2 slipstream installed, including the one I did without nlite. I downloaded nlite from the official site, and it doesn't seem to be anything to do with nlite as a normal install of SP2 slipstreamed is having the same problems for me. Manage to work though almost all my problems though, just need to figure out why LiteStep isn't working properly and two of my fonts don't properly display...
  8. Seems to be a SP2 bug, on all the clean installs windows is showing read only greyed out and checkmarked on all folders. All my files seem to be fine now other than any LiteStep rc files still give me access denied...
  9. No, it 'applies' the settings and then when I open properities again it's set to read-only once more.
  10. No luck setting owner of C:\ to my account...And any new file I create seems to set itself to read-only as well.
  11. I just did a clean install on both my PCs after testing a slipstreamed sp2 xp disc that was setup in nlite for unattended in vmware many times and it worked fine. That is until I did the clean installs. Afterwards on both PCs all files are read only. Including all my backed up files on another drive apparently. 25GB+ of unreplacable files and stuff that would take ages to download again on 56k so loosing everything != acceptable. I've tried booting into BartsPE and removing file attributes but it did nothing, I tried attrib -H -S -R * /s on C:\ and once again, nothing worked. Access denied for _everything_. For the love of all things holy and fluffy kittens, help! Panic attack overwhelming.
  12. I recieve the same error when installing Winamp 5.03 and my Audigy2 drivers/apps and a few other programs. They all seem to work fine though, so far. Rather irritating though during the installs to close the windows it pops up.
