The Department of Homeland Security has advised that PC owners uninstall Apple's QuickTime for Windows, after two vulnerabilities were discovered in its code. Because Apple is no longer updating the Windows version of the software, the DHS says "the only mitigation" is to remove the software entirely, or else risk "loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data, as well as damage to system resources or business assets."

Another vote for PaleMoon. Using it is like remembering the Firefox (pre-Australis mainly) that used to be innovative and fun to use.
I began using PM instead of FF when extensions I was using were disabled by the new FF signing enforcement. What is more, PaleMoon has some of its own extensions, which open up the interface to yet more tweaking and optimising.

Thank you for posting the direct links. I had suffered a day of "page not available" on the MS site for this patch.
I have been reinstalling Vista x64, waiting twice over ten hours in WU with nothing but the CPU meter at 100% the whole while. I had already updated the Update Agent.
Not entirely sure that KB3139852 + reboot did it for me. The wait for the updates to appear on a clean SP2 install was still over two hours. Then I was presented with a list of 175 updates! All went smoothly after that.

Cheapest software of all is Open DNS. Also, siting the computer for the kids' use in a public place within the family environment will be better than any number of Net Narnies or Spies.
Some people, myself included, would suggest that the home computer is not the only one your child will have an opportunity to access "adult" or disturbing material on. Whaddya' do about that?
Is blocking software the right approach at all? Could you defeat such software, or know someone who knows a way to defeat it (a handy, online message board, for example)? I'm certain I could find a way if I were determined enough.
This brings up the less compact alternative (than a 'pay-fee, click-setup' software approach) of finding time for discussions with your child, sharing and listening to them, educating yourself and them about online risks.
Our Internet access is increasingly being censored/monitored by our governments. Training your children to accept restrictions imposed from above at an early age steps into the same pattern.

If you visit the TrueCrypt homepage you will be greeted not with information about the best cross-platform open-source crypto software available, but a warning to avoid it as it has "unfixed security issues".
What happened? Did the page get hacked by a national security agency, irritated that its citizens have avoided scrutiny of sensitive files by locking them in a password-protected container? Did the developers of TrueCrypt receive an insight into a backdoor or flaw in the encryption software that made it inadvisable to continue with the project? Were they leant on by the same security agencies and then served with a gagging order?
The website offers downloads to TrueCrypt 7.2 now. This also has a warning within it, and will decrypt existing containers but not encrypt new ones. The website suggests migrating to Bit Locker on Windows (sic.) as a way of protecting files from now on.
Whatever has gone on here, it looks like TrueCrypt has some rough times ahead, and is possibly dead in the water.

Oh yes, I remember Zardoz: "The gun is good; the penis is evil". Not one of John Boorman's best, but an interesting distopia. Soylent Green is fantastic, but could hardly be said to be 'underrated'. Plenty of people have seen it.
The movie I keep returning to whenever forgotten sci-fi films are discussed is They Live, directed by John Carpenter. "A drifter discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth. Superbly metaphorical for the present day, it is one of those cult films you rant about long after everyone else has moved on to extolling the special effects in Gravity.

I use Arch Linux with XFCE4.
That information panel/clock you have on the right of your desktop is very handy. Does it show/hide on mouseover? I also have XFCE4 (two weeks and counting) running on Ubuntu 12.04 and love it to bits, but haven't seen that panel anywhere previously.

Win 7 Ultimate, 64-bit.
I upgraded to IE 11 and upon reboot my 'clock' gadget had disappeared from the desktop. It's the standard MS gadget (unsupported now, so I know I am on my own here).
Although the clock was useful, I don't feel like reverting to IE10 as the security features in IE11 are a bigger advantage, even though I only use it for sites which do not display correctly in Firefox.

Many of the things which probably irritate you about XP (the balloon tips, for example) can be tethered by registry edits/ group policy changes. A tried and tested shortcut to doing this is XP Anti-Spy.

Interesting result. The first time I tried it, I was taken to an entirely unrelated download with Unavailable, like you. The second time, I got the correct file OK. Rapidshare's usually more reliable than this.

I solved this issue.
Having tried just about all the options for removing this accursed arrow, I found that the replacement icon overlay itself is the problem. It does not contain all possible icon sizes, and setting it to total transparency borks some graphics setups. I'm not the only one reporting a black square over shortcuts. Whether it's a reg. import linking to the file or programs like Ultimate Windows Tweaker or Yamicsoft Windows 7 Manager, that black square still appears.

It's an icon overlay with 1% opacity (essentially it looks the same as 100% transparent) in all the possible icon sizes. If you are using software to remove the icon arrow, put the new empty.ico in the folder to overwrite the old one and procede as normal.
Will Microsoft make ditching the shortcut arrow easier in Windows 8? Don't hold your breath...

Indigo Rose has AutoRun MAXor, if you have more money for the full bells-whistles program, AutoPlay Media Studio.
Both use a very intuitive drag-drop system. You can go under the hood and add scripting for more involved installs (such as interrogating the Registry for Winversion, 32/64-bit).

When I use the method explained above, I haven't any problem even if I change the size icons on the Desktop! The arrows are removed from the shorcut icons!
As I said in my reply to you, The empty.ico file inside the Ultimate Windows Tweaker folder shows as a black box on my system. Thus, pasting a link for this to appear in place of the system's shortcut arrow is why I see a black box over any shortcut icon. This much I've established, although the graphics complexities of why it is black in some icon sizes and transparent in others is beyond me at the moment.
You are using Win 7, x86, is that right? Perhaps the registry entries you gave work only in 32-bit systems. I'm using 64-bit Win 7, and those registry entries do nothing in mine.

I have temporarily restored the shortcut arrows on this rig. Big and gangly though they are, the arrows are better than looking at a gaping maw of black square sitting over nearly half an icon.
Still hoping that someone else has found a successful way to remove arrows from shortcut icons.

"29"="empty.ico,0"I have neither of these reg keys, and neither is created with the Ultimate Windows Tweaker "remove arrows on shortcuts" tweak. No reference whatever to "empty.ico" in the registry!
I am convinced the issue is something within the graphics rendering of transparency on icons at a certain resolution. I should point out that I have Aero switched on, and at 110% text size, but the effect of the black square persists in Vista Basic theme (haven't tried rebooting with that set, though). If I revert to 100% text size (default) shortcut icons magically become normal. Upon reboot, the black square is back.
The empty.ico file inside the Ultimate Windows Tweaker folder appears on my system as a black box, nothing else, if viewed in Tile view or smaller. Once we reach "Medium Icons" it becomes a proper transparent icon. then reverting to Tiles shows it still as transparent.
I'd love to know more about this problem - especially because, as I said, this SP1 install is on identical hardware with practically identical programs.

It happens when we use a registry file incorrect to remove the shorcut arrow!
I didn't use a registry file to do this. I used "The Ultimate Windows Tweaker" from The Windows Club (freeware) which gave no issues before.
Can you be specific about the registry entry I should check?

I've had this issue before on another computer; then it cleared with some unknown action I performed. This is a new install (went 'clean install' for SP1 as it bluescreened as update) on exactly the same hardware that performed normally previously. As in the example picture, all shortcut icons (internet and file) have a black square superimposed over the lower left side.
What I am running:
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit with ATI HD 5450 graphics card, 1920 x 1024 resolution.
What I have tried so far:
Installed an updated graphics driver (catalyst driver without CCC the second time), tried new screen resolutions, removed system generated shortcut icon arrow and added it back, deleted the icon cache and rebuilt it.
Interestingly, the black square appears in List, Details, Small icon (in these three there's no picture, just a plain black square), Tile and Medium icon. In Large and Extra Large the icon is normal. If I then return to Tile after viewing Large, the icon has been repaired.

Yes, please! I seem to be regularly installing Vista in various VirtualBox and VMWare machines. The update process on a VM is slightly more interminable than non-virtualised, so anything that can hasten the process early on is invaluable.
And BTW, many thanks for maintaining this repository on Mega!
