f***, I forgot Firefox, Java and Adblock don't go well together.... No chat for me..
-
Isn't that the fun of it? If we go on like this, and MS waits a little longer, this could get a VERY long thread And look at the lot following this post
-
Well, I don't really think that's neccessary. When I have my installer script working, all I have to do is download the new zip's and recompile the installer .... Takes maybe 3 minutes with LZMA compression.
-
@kC_ Don't really know what qualifies as a joke for you, but I'm pretty sure MS wouldn't "joke around" about stuff like this. So what exactly DO you mean? That it's not going to happen today? Join the discussion . We haven't really come up with a conclusion about that one yet.
-
Well I did need some sleep after all. I gave up at about 11:00. But I'm back at full strength now
-
Yes... Me struggling with the NSIS scripts. I'm getting less and less confident I'll be able to write an installer with silent switches AND the option to remove components. But I'll keep working on it. And as soon as I have something working, I'll post a link!
-
Say, a question: Just hypothetically. if it wouldn't be released today, will this thread continue untill it does?! And will there be people monitoring it 24/7? LOL
-
Did any admin get flooded by complaints / and or the suggestion that the site was down? I might have helped with that . Good that everything is back to normal again!
-
That would be very nice indeed. I'll keep my tab locked on this page...
-
I don't know if I misunderstand some of you, but seems your all still waiting for the link. While the news-message very clearly stated, "We remain on track to RTM the product in August". Not that I don't want to trust Microsoft, but I'm just not able to anymore. And since it's only the 5'th of august, I won't be surprised if it doesn't 'hits the streets' until the 30'th.... Not that I don't hope prathapml will give "THE" link that will knock the internet down for an hour or so Just not to sure of it..... Slipstreaming: http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/12-p1.php So u guys really think it'll still be today?! Cause if it is, I'll wait with me format c: to slipstream that 90 Megabytes on my well prepared and anticipated unattended setup [edit] Savest bet to reach people when the server would be down is e-mail...
-
f***, I'm gonna get some sleep, haha. I'm totally wasted, been up three days and nights, couldn't sleep tonight, thought I'd wait for SP2, but no can't do. Why don't those s*ckers just say 'a few weeks' instead of giving exact dates so that everyone is anticipating! I could have done a clean install with my (NOT YET BURNED...... BCUZ OF MS) unattended setup hours ago. I'm off to bed, cheers! The setup will have to wait...
-
Just trying to confirm my assumptions... If I slipstream SP2 in my source-files, I can get rid off all Hotfixes, DirectX and Windows Media Player 9 right?
-
So no-one has any idea as to how late we could expect it to arrive? I'm waiting .............
-
It was never my intention to still be awake at this time, but since I still am, I might as well await SP2 . See what speeds I can get. Does anyone have any info on how it will be distributed? first of all I don't suppose translations will be out tomorrow?! I use Dutch WinXP Pro with slipstreamed SP1. So I don't think it's such a good idea to slipstream an english SP2 in there Second, wil there be, for example, a mirror @ microsoft.nl? Or will it just be the international site with lot's and lot's of backup?! [edit] Haha, I just reread my post, it says posted on 6:00 AM. My pc says 05:50. Whoah! Awesome! [edit v2] Sorry to ask this question between all you guys that seem to have been anticipating this release for months, but where can I find the download when released? Can't find a thing on microsoft.com, technet or msdn ????

KiXtart-scripts instead of Batch-files
xolox replied to xolox's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Probably couldn't tell from my reply's, but I didn't intent to start a discussion about whether to use KiXtart or CMD . Anyway, thanks for the reactions everyone! And thanks to Radimus for forwarding my problem to the KiXtart admin' s! And I'll agree with GreenMachine on that: It's not the tools you use, but how you use them. So everyone just has to decide for him-/herself what tool to use, be it CMD, KiXtart, XPlode, etc. -
KiXtart-scripts instead of Batch-files
xolox replied to xolox's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Been using kixforms myself aswell. Very nice indeed. Thanks for paying attention to my problem and forwarding the info. I really like the fact that I -think- I haven't found a single member not being serious or off-topic in the MSFN forums... Really hope I'll be able to use KiXtart for Windows XP unattended setup! BTW. Just an observation: It seems that natively editing the registry from KiXtart is faster then importing *.reg's from either KiXtart or CMD. Just an impression, so don't go benchmarking and flaming me! CMD + Native to Windows + A lot is possible using command-line tools - Minor set of internal tools KiXtart + A lot of internal tools, which makes it quicker + Simple way of communicating with OS: I need only a few lines of code to write a function which shows a native 'Folder select' or 'File select' dialog + Really like the syntax - Executable needed to run scripts @prathapml: Actually, there is a GUI designer for Kixforms. This way you could easily generate a GUI for you script. And the fun thing, for me, is you don't need to use a GUI, but the possibility is there. And doing everything from a GUI would be a mayor pain in the a**. So, again: for me, this is a great compromise! Also, KiXtart was developed by a Microsoft employee, and distributed with several earlier resource kits. So it may not be as native as CMD, but it ties in with the system just as well IMHO -
NICE! Very good tip, thanks a lot for that! Would you also happen to know if there would be a way to script this without key emulation and stuff like that? I'll start looking around for this. Would never have thought of it myself... again This way I could actually make all associations permanent....

KiXtart-scripts instead of Batch-files
xolox replied to xolox's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
@Radimus: Maybe, just maybe, you can tell me if KiXtart requires a logged in account to really change system-settings like registry-stuff? I'm still wondering if I'll be able to use KiXtart for the scripts that will be run at T-13. ----------------------------------- I've already registered for an account at KiXtart.org's forum, but things aint working, so I have no place to ask... My mail to info@kixtart.nl: They said no info was found on any of the two logins I registered But they would register me a new account. Still haven't received a confirm of that registration -
Well I checked the permissions. No problems there. Since I use my own progs to manage archives and mulitmedia, and I'll be doind a clean install in a week, I'm just going to try and remove the SystemFileAssociations related to *.zip and *.mp* See what happens then! @Nois3: I had a hunch that this had to do with compatibility... Sick that there are so many ways to do this! I'm beginning to understand better and better why Windows is so slow compared to Linux. I mean, I use Regmon a lot, and by only opening a context-menu of a file, I generate a list of, hell, I don't know, about 200 reads from the registry. The whole context-menu is composed of regkey's spread over the registry. Nice that everything updates inmediately, but wouldn't it be way more efficient to make a cache for stuff like this? I don't think the registry is cached in the memory, or maybe only parts, but it still means 100/150 reads for my harddrive to open a context-menu I want to see in less then 1 second. Just my humble opinion! I'm no coder, so I might not see the effects on the whole picture!

I can't seem to find HKU\SID, but what you're saying about the others makes sense. Still don't understand the advantage of using two places to store everything though. And about [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts]. I know it's only the extensions themselves, and an assocation with info from HKCR or HKLM\Software\Classes, but why? Is this really so that users can customize file assocations without influencing other users? Wouldn't know any other reason to use that tree.
-
For example: I use WinRAR to manage my archives, and I used my own icons for each archive-type. All is good, WinRAR accepts the change! But Every restart *.zip is reset! I have the impression this is about Windows, because off all archives, only *.zip changes. The same for *.mpg/mpe/mpeg. It's only the extensions mentioned in SystemFileAssociations. Or so it seems at least! I tried unregistering the zip-dll, but it doesn't help! Any suggestions? Maybe I should just remove the problematic keys in SystemFileAssociations ( and ONLY the problematic ones of course! ) ?!

KiXtart-scripts instead of Batch-files
xolox replied to xolox's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Maybe I should have been more careful with that statement . Thanks for the info! Fact remains, though, that KiXtart has a lot more to offer to me than Batch. But what about my question? Anyone any idea's about any possible drawbacks of my setup? I'll check out the KiXtart forums too. -
KiXtart-scripts instead of Batch-files
xolox replied to xolox's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Nope, it doesn't use the same syntax, but's very easy. I've converted about 200 lines of Batch to Kix in 5 minutes . I've really grown to like it in the 2 days I use it now... Please note that KiXtart is freeform meaning as long as commands are seperated with whitespace (space, newline, tab) it's okay! For example: SetConsole("Hide") Dim $SystemDrive $SystemDrive = ExpandEnvironmentVars("%SystemDrive%") Shell($SystemDrive + "\Install\App.exe /switches") This looks like a lot of code, but it's really not! I'm 17, have done almost nthing concerning scripting / coding and have already got the hang of it in two days! The first line hides the console (Try to do that in Batch! ) Second line declares var for use and gives it a value (remember, freeform, these are actually two seperate commands), note that you CAN't use Environment Variables directly in code (only thing I don't like, but it's a minor thing) The third executes the app and waits for it. See http://www.kixtart.org/ for download, syntax-/commands-info and examples BTW. Because of the syntax, you could also write this code as: SetConsole("Hide") $SystemDrive = ExpandEnvironmentVars("%SystemDrive%") Shell $SystemDrive + "\Install\App.exe /switches" (variables don't have to be explicitly declared and most commands don't need ()) Check out http://www.kixforms.org/ It's only a beta, but it gives you a GUI for your scripts! I've already seen text-editors and stuff -
I've been working on putting together my own unattended cd, with integrated Registry-tweaks, services-settings, programs, etc. Been working with Batch-scripts for 4 years now, and I know there's a lot you can do with them, but I like to do stuff straight to the point. And then I found KixTart ( http://www.kixtart.org ). So I've been busy converting and simplifying my Batch-scripts to KiXtart-scripts. But I was wondering, first off all, why I found only 3 posts related to KiXtart in this forum, because it seems to me as a way more powerful language than Batch. You can do everything you can do in batch, and way more. And it was designed to be used for login-scripting purposes (though it's much more powerful since the last version), so wouldn't that fit with an unattended setup? Second, I think it should work, but I'm not sure . KiXtart needs only one 236 KB executable. So I thought I'd just launch "kix32.exe script.kix" from my first batch. Anything nasty I overlooked? I mean, KiXtart was designed to manage login-scripts, so I don't really think it needs priveleges to do the the stuff I want it to..Still I'm not sure, and it like to know what I'm doing before I test the cd with Virtual PC (takes a lot of time and diskspace)

Well, actually, I've been running Windows XP on a 500 MHz pc for 1 full year. Of course, now I've got 1,4 GHz and 512 MB-ram, but at that time it was 500 MHz and 128 MB-ram. And believe me, everything ran fine. Of course, not with a clean install, but disabling the services I didn't need ( http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/customREG.htm for an easy way of doing it) and disabling themes. So it might be worth a try (IMHO). Windows XP is WAY more stable than ME. I tried to install it on a pc lately, and what a hell man! Crash after crash, and that might be just my experience, but I know for sure that XP is more stable. Good luck making your choice!
