  1. MadGutts is correct but you need to keep in mind that fibers from MDF are wood fibers and have similar physical properties as asbestos but has it's own carcinogenic and allergic properties. I don't know what substances are added to MDF to get it to bind other than possibly the lignin getting heated with moisture present to cause the fibers to bind. So the binders I can't comment on. Cancer from wood dust can happen. There is one rare type of nasal cancer that you can get from breathing a lot of fine wood 'flour' and dust over a long period of time. Allergic reactions to wood can be caused by your own personal allergies, wood species, how and what you come in contact with (dust or dissolved chemicals from the wood/ inhaled, ingested or contact with the skin) or how violently you react to getting a large splinter under your fingernail. Another hazard of fine wood powder is its flamambility or explosiveness, but you need the right conditions. There is a lot more to this OT topic and if you want more, go where Bashrat points.

    And like MadGutts says "wear a dust mask".

  2. From someone who is not in the industry and knows little of the inner workings of computers. From my perspective, hacking started out as something illegal, then cracking came along and now hacking is writing code or manipulating systems in a positive way. Cracking is any of the illegal stuff. Besides, it's easier for people like me to understand. Hacker=someone who makes computers do cool stuff/ as opposed to he works in VB, C++, Fortran or whatever. Cracker=jerk who gets his jollies from messing up someone else's stuff.

  3. I have had this happen while I have been holding the mouse. In my case, I think, it is due to the ball on the mouse moving fractionally and fooling the computer into thinking that the ball is rolling. So if you move your mouse and it stops the behavior, then you may be getting the same behavior. Time for a new mouse in that case.

  4. @KernelOverlord I owe you a thanks. The Linux stuff is cool but I have been having a problem with my computer behaving oddly. I had installed a new HDD and the computer had been acting buggy. I thought the problem was a incompatibility. But in the test run with knoppix, I had similar problems but much more clear. So an incompatibility probably wasn't the problem. I hadn't intended to use Linux to that end but the behavior was so odd that I haven't been doing anything with Windows except accessing the web. The only thing I could think of that was any different was I had dusted out my tower. I went back and blew the case out again and concentrated on the PS/2 connections because everything that was odd could be done with the keyboard or mouse. So far no problems.

    @Jeremy I owe you a thanks also for starting this thread 'Who Has The Cleanest/Most Organized System'. Obviously, I lose hands down. Now to work on the Organized part.

  5. @SiMoNsAyS I'll check that out and see the differences.

    @KernelOverlord Sure, why not. I have so many free proggys (and I have donated to some) burned to disks and I bet I haven't looked at 1 in 20. I see them and think 'Oooo, need to check that out' (see my first comment?)

    All this reminds me of the first lap-top computer I ever saw. Booted from a floppy and you had to install each program off a floppy as you wanted to use it. Turn the computer off and all was gone.

    @albator 7 seconds. They don't have an emoticon giving the raspberry. You'll just have to imagine it. :yes:

    <Wanders off to find 3.7 and Mepis>

  6. @KernelOverlord DL'ed DSL, very cool

    @SiMoNsAyS DSL is a version of knoppix!

    And I burned it to disk, chucked it into the computer, started it up and it ran from the disk. Used no HDD. :)

    Takes me on a tangent. I have had problems with my computer acting weird. Progs openning on their own, text being inserted on it's own (same letter or space repeatedly), mouse passing over a hyperlink and the link openning up, etc. All seem to be keyboard or mouse related, especially if there are multiple windows open. Did everything I could think of to remedy and nothing. So, what brings this up is when I ran DSL, I could hardly use the keyboard and the mouse didn't function well. I went into knoppix to set up keyboard and because the mouse and keyboard aren't functioning well, I couldn't. Bad MOBO?

  7. @Jeremy If it does everything you need. Great.

    @Wedge1 Nice

    @KernelOverlord Cool

    There has got to be advantages to having things 'stripped down' to suit your needs. It may apply to using an older system, a particular use (music, video, graphics, etc), controlling functionality of a network and who gets to do what.....

    Anything running in the background that you don't need could be crippled but why have it there if you don't need it? All the little bits and pieces have got to slow down a computer no matter what you maybe fortunate to have. With all the stuff Windows has integrated, it has got to slow it down. If you prefer proggys that are more stand alone or more useful then cripple Windows and set it up the way you want. My $.02 worth and will gladly take corrections.

  8. Well, BIOS is flashed, used MaxBlast3 to do a low level full format of HDD's (3 hours), did memory scan and all was well, contacted keyboard manufacturer about the keyboard and they replied within 2 days!!! and the conversation with them is just starting but I doubt the keyboard is the problem. Windows identified it as an 84 key model when it is in reality a 126 key model and the weird thing is that all the keys function the way they are supposed to, well not completely sure. What the heck is an 'Fn' button for? ( I'll google it)

    I'm down to thinking there must be a bad contact somewhere or the MOBO is fritzing.

    4th OS install and it's starting to wear a little thin. (Wouldn't be any fun at all if I didn't get to use nLite at the same time)

    Thanks for any help.

  9. Week and a half ago HD did the click of death. Lost a little info but nothing important. Got a new HD, Maxtor 120 GB, 7200 rpm and installed it and installed XP Home. The install of XP Home was off original disk, no SP1, no other progs and one visit to msfn.

    Weird behavior started but thought it was just due to using a new HD and XP with nothing updated in it. I wanted my system a little more secure and installed an XP CD with SP2 slipstreamed. Weird behavior continued. Hmmm. Installed nLited XPSP2 and progs. Each install was on a deleted and reformated HD.

    Problems: (1) Sometimes the text indicator (marker where you are about to type next) would suddenly go ballistic and start automatically inserting spaces or 3's or whatever, nonstop unless I hit the back key which is the only thing so far to stop it. (2)Beeping. Sometimes I would get an occasional beep. Other times the computer would freeze and have a continuous beep and then the problem quit, and sometimes the computer would freeze, beep continuously and then the computer would shut down. (3) Programs spontaniously open and most seem to have been programs that I had open recently. Or I would get a multitude of the same program opening (Text editor to be specific on more than one occasion). (4) Keyboard or mouse functions spontaniously activating, e.g. highlighting text, opening web page as mouse passes over hyperlink, Alt 'x' functions etc. (5) ZoneAlarm is not always recalling previous settings (after each boot, it might ask if it's ok for IE to access the internet) and I am sure there are other oddities I am not recalling at the moment.

    Googled the heck out of the problem. I see some very slight matches but they refer to specific virii ( sp?, that word is just to weird on its own ) or Windows glitches and I have run several progs to detect for umpteen things. Run progs to check ram chips, defrag, checkdisk, Spybot, Ad-Aware and on and on. Nada, nothing, zilch.

    <shudder> Checked BIOS and it is dated 2001 and there is a newer version dated 2002. <shudder> Could it be that the BIOS is just not handling the new HD? I have read the manual on the HD and it says there could be a problem with HD's over 137 GB.

    But outside of that, all is great!! :thumbup

  10. My hard drive crashed, click of death. Got new one, installed Win XP Home to create a new nLite CD (didn't get that far), I wanted to pop in to msfn.org to see what had happened over the past couple of days.

    First sight I was taken to was msn, from there I went straight to msfn.org and nowhere else. I didn't have any updates, hotfixes, firewall etc.... While at msfn.org, windows informed me that longhorn.nu wanted to put a cookie on my coputer, I declined as it was not a website I was visiting. Left the web, checked my cache (because I was curious about longhorn.nu) and found stuff from msn, msfn.org and several pages from longhorn.nu, which I had never visited. The pages were blank with the exception of two which held 5kb of script.

    Now my curiosity was up. I installed Ad-aware and ran it. 8 instances of the Alexa virus. Ran a couple of other progs to check for other stuff and nothing else showed up. Don't know where it came from but there you are. :hello:

    Oh, and you don't need to tell me about doing stupid noob stuff, I know all about it. :whistle:

  11. @Jaclaz

    Wow. Nice proggy. Thanks

    @prathapml

    Hmmm. On this go-around, I went xphome, slipped SP2 on ver 98.4. I didn't sellect to remove firewire, so that didn't show up this time. Had other glitches but I will check the forum first and then post my problems that I think SP2 was partly responsible for. On an aside, I am curious about your name 'prathapml'. How did you get it, make it up, stands for something? :)

  12. I stumbled on this site. Everyone here is lightyears ahead of me on what they know about MS, computers and everything to do with them. I read numerous posts and decided to join. I had a little treppidation upon entering. I felt like a lamb in a lions den. I should have had no worries. The broad handedness of the help and friendliness from anyone who is present, be they new or forum leaders, is a very pleasant change of pace from daily life. I must say that the more knowlegable(sp? on anything I have written) are very generous with their time. The number of posts a person makes here should be an indicator of how much they help and participate. So, congratulations prathapml. :) and well said.
