  1. To get VirtualBox 1.6.2 to run on Windows 2000, do the following:

Open the MSI in Orca and go to LaunchCondition, then edit out the “NOT VersionNT=500 and” and then save the file. It will then go ahead and install.

The limited testing I did with a pre-existing hard drive from a VirtualBox Linux installation, it appears to work just fine. USB didn’t want to work, but this could be because I didn’t install the OS from scratch and install the Vbox additions from this version. (The Hard Drive I used had it installed from a higher version and the mouse was going across between the host and guest without issue.)

Will this work with higher versions, I don’t know. Will depend if there are dlls used that are XP specific. Before the Orca mod, it came up saying it only runs on XP and above.

Just in case anyone has an interest in running VirtualBox on 2K.

I will try a fresh OS install and see if the USB works with the proper VBoxadditions installed.

Edit Update: Fresh install and 1.6.2 VBox additions didn't make any difference on the USB access. I remember having to tweak things in Linux to get it to work with this version.

  2. I just recently acquired Office 2000 Pro and suddenly found that I couldn't update it. In my searching, I discovered that I was not alone. It seems that Microsoft no longer keeps this file available for download. The file missing is O2ksr1aDL.exe.

I did find it at the following link and it scanned clean and worked.

    http://www.4shared.com/account/file/42744856/bfcf9c41/O2KSR1aDL.html

These are other links I found and are still active:

    http://affordableitguy.com/downloads/O2KSR1aDl.exe

    and

    ftp://ftp.uni-rostock.de/pub/tools/microsoft/ServicePacks/Office9/us/SR1/O2KSR1aDL.EXE

Just thought this might help someone else trying to find it.

Thought I might include the file size: 51.3 MB (53816506 bytes)

  3. Notebook cRaZyLaNd! Part 1: Windows 2000

    Computer Name: IMAGETEST06 (Windows 2000 SP2)

    - Compaq Armada 1592DMT

    - Intel Pentium MMX

    - 64MB RAM

    - 3GB HDD (IBM-DYKA-23240)

    - 3Com 10/100 PCMCIA NIC

With those specs in mind, I now open this thread up to anyone. What can I possibly do with this PC? How can I make it faster or more up to date? You be the judge!

First things I see, is more memory and larger hard drive. From a quick Google, found this for memory: Link_to_memory

Then I found this for information on hard drives: Link_to_hard_drive_info

As for the OS, you might want to consider using 98se rather than 2K. I think it would perform better, but it's your game, not mine. Enjoy yourself with it, what ever you do. Good luck, from a 2K fan that has pretty much switched to the Penguin. Still play with 98 a bit, sooo....

  4. With a few modifcations Windows 9X can handle 4KB Sector Hard Drives. This allows Partitions up to 16TiB. DOS can handle 16KB Sectors and up to 64TiB Partitions.
Which of the Win98-compatible partition-related software Partition Magic v8.01 Build 1274, Paragon Partition Manager v9.0.4156, Partition Table Doctor v3.5, Acronis Disk Director v10 build 2089 or Ghost v11.0.2 can handle 4kb sector size? System Commander can't according to their docu.

I doubt that any of them can handle 4KB Logical Sector Drives. I upgraded my RFDISK and RFORMAT to support up to 16KB Logical Sectors.

Fortunately 4KB Logical Sector Drives are not likely to appear for some time.

The so called "Advanced Format" Drives from Western Digital use a 4KB Physical Sector internally but are still 512 Byte Logical Sector Drives.

These drives can be used with any software, but will not perform optimally if not aligned properly. Western Digital's Align Utility, or using the jumper on the Drive, only facilitate alignment. They only work for XP and above.

To use "Advanced Format" Drives with Windows 98 you can use any Partitioner, but will need a customized Formatter. I plan to add an alignment option to my RFORMAT Program to facilitate alignment.

I know this is a 98 forum. But, your comment "They only work for XP and above." begs the question... how about 2K? Just wondering, as it is one of my oses, that I intend to keep and use for those instances I need Windows. Maybe, I should start laying up some drives if 2K will have issues. Thanks in advance.

  5. Just tried the test file and it worked, so it appears to be working properly. Thanks for the heads up though.

Beware! I have Symantec 9.0 (copyright is 2004) and it APPEARS to still update its virus definitions. However, in reality, new definitions (manually or updates via LiveUpdate) SILENTLY break it! Check with the EICAR test signature file, don't assume that because all appears well, that it actually is!

    Joe.

PS. I wonder is KernelEx will solve the Avast 5 problem (I'm staying with 4.8 for the time being)?

If you want an AV application that still runs on 98 and still has current definition files, go find Norton AntiVirus 2002, and then periodically download the Symantec Intelligent Updater package.

    Hello:

As I understand it, Norton Antivirus 2002 is no longer supported with new definition updates. It appears that Norton AV 2003 is the earliest version that is still receiving updates, and it seems that it doesn't support Windows 98/ME. (See: http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95 .)

    Cheers,

    Jerry

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. It still updates or at least gives the indication that it does. I know it states that it doesn't, but it still does. In fact upon completion of the update it it mentions that if you have older products you still need to use a different updater. Just thought I would pass it on, since it is being discussed.

  6. If I remember correctly, 98 wants to be the first thing on the hard drive, so it will need to be on there first.

You can use your live CD of Ubuntu or download GParted Live from SourceForge, and use GParted to partition your disk. Make your first partition for 98 and format it FAT 32. You can do the rest or wait until you install Ubuntu. Then install your 98 and make sure it is working OK before going any further. Once you have it working OK, I would back it up somehow using ghost, clonezilla or something. That way, you are only a few minutes away from a recovery.

In theory, the rest should be easy. Hope this helps.

  8. I will get it all together here in a few days and get it posted. I have spent last few days reinstalling OS and all software on my business computer. It had started acting up and I figured I had better address it before I lost a bunch of data. I am going to be busy for rest of year, so it may take a week or so before I get all the settings pulled together and into a decent format.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I wasn't ignoring the posting of the data.

Once again, thanks for all the helpful posts around here.

  9. This is coming from my new Windows 98 SE machine.

First off thanks for the help provided here, it has been very valuable.

Should I post my BIOS settings, etc. for my install on an ASUS A8V-E SE and other things, such as memory etc?

    Thanks again everyone.

  10. Try to install in non-ACPI mode, and see whether this solves your issue.

See: this post and KB186111. Bear in mind that a space between the "/p" and the "i" is mandatory.

In case it solves your problem, you might, or might nor, also want to disable APM, as well.

If so, this post tells how to do it.

Thanks a million. The ACPI was the problem. I used the registry hack pointed out in the post referenced above. Now to make an image, so I can move onward with the knowledge I can reinstall in minutes.

So, if anyone else is using the ASUS A8V-e SE motherboard (that I pointed out as being available on ebay the other day) install with the /p i option or do a normal install and follow the Registry Hack described in the post referenced above.

Thanks again and I will post if I run into any other surprises.

  11. In my infinite wisdom, I managed to hose my install. With a new install and only installing the VIA 4 in 1 drivers I get the same results. Here is the hardware:

    ASUS A8V-E SE

    AMD Athlon 3800 (2.2Gig)

    256 meg memeory

    EVGA e-GeForce 6500 with 256 memory

I have turned off everything I can think of in the BIOS to minimize possible conflicts, such as sound and the on board SATA. Also turned off the serial port.

If I can get it to work without having to do the step by step boot, I would like to keep it around and evaluate if I want to head back or not. If not, I guess it can become another Win2K box with Linux.

    Thanks for the help.

  12. Here is some more data. The following is from the BOOTLOG done one step at a time:

[000F25DA] Loading PNP drivers of NVIDIA GeForce 6200 (PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0160&SUBSYS_C3563842&REV_A1\001000)

It would appear that NVidia is the culprit, as the top portion of the code above is the same as the failed boot log down to and including the last "Dynamic load success NVCOR.VXD" at which point the failed boot log ceases. I will google and look around for anything dealing with Nvidia and 98 timing issues.

If someone already knows the answer please post. Thanks.

  13. NOTE, there are three (3) posts describing this. Sorry for the length of it all.

OK, finally got all the hardware and got it all put together. The 98se install got to a point where I was getting drivers ironed out, etc. The problem that has me baffled is as follows:

Will not boot, it either hangs or reboots and comes up to the safe mode, etc selection screen.

It will boot, if I step through the start up and answer everything Yes.

So... it would appear to me that something is having a timing conflict/race condition that doesn't happen when I step through the start up.

Any ideas or thoughts? The only things I see in a BOOTLOG that raises my eyebrows is as follows:

    [0002E899] Dynamic load device nvmini.vxd

    [0002E89A] Dynamic init device NVMINI

    [0002E89B] Dynamic load device NVCORE.VXD

    [0002E8A2] Dynamic init device NVCORE

    [0002E8A3] Dynamic init success NVCORE

    [0002E8A3] Dynamic load success NVCORE.VXD

    [0002E8A3] Dynamic init success NVMINI

    [0002E8A3] Dynamic load success nvmini.vxd

    [0002E8A4] Dynamic load device NVCORE.VXD

    [0002E8A8] Dynamic init device NVCORE

    [0002E8A8] Dynamic init success NVCORE

    [0002E8A8] Dynamic load success NVCORE.VXD

which appears at the end, and I'm questioning the twice loading of NVCORE.VXD, and the following that appears about midway

    [0002E881] Starting Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0)

    [0002E881] Started Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0)

    [0002E881] Enumerating Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0)

    [0002E882] Enumerated Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0)

    [0002E882] Starting Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0)

    [0002E882] Started Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0)

    [0002E882] Enumerating Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0)

    [0002E882] Enumerated Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0)

    Any thoughts from anyone?

    Thanks in advance.

  14. OK, after watching this Forum for a spell, I have decided to set up a 98SE machine, that will probably be a triple boot with 2K and Ubuntu. In deciding to do this I came across MANY sellers of new ASUS A8V-E SE motherboards on Ebay. This board has all the needed 98 drivers. The drawback is that it uses the AMD 939 pin Athlon. Those can be found on Ebay too. I happened to find some new OEMs there, so I will have a new old system when everything gets here.

Just thought I would post this in case any one was looking for hardware that easily handles 98. For a date reference, today is October 10, 2009.

  15. ASUS M3N72-D motherboard

    Windows 2000

The DVD supplied with the board will come up saying it does not support NT5.0 (Windows 2000).

However, you can use Windows Explorer and get the on board stuff to work. I had to try a few different times to get there, but it will work. Here is the what I did:

    1.) Install Windows 2000

2.) Use Windows Explorer to get to the DVD. Now go into Drivers\Audio\driver then double click setup.exe. This will start the wizard, then when it gets to the discovered hardware, I canceled. Then on the reboot, when it comes up with discovered new hardware, go ahead click next. However, choose the option to select from a list, then select the Realtek and the one option it will show. That will get the sound working.

3.) Now get to Drivers\Chipset\1524_XP32\Display then double click setup.exe. If I remember correctly ( I didn't take good enough notes.) there are several options presented as to what to install. If I am correct, only install the video drivers.

4.) After the reboot, go to Drivers\Chipset\1524_XP32 and double click setup.exe. This setup will have several options. Only select the Ethernet to install and let it search the CD/DVD for the files needed. (I wished that I had taken better notes. You may have to install the 2 bus drivers, but I don't remember for sure. So don't do it unless your ethernet doesn't work.)

I had to re-install the OS several times to get it all to work. It appears that the trick is to use the Realtek and NVidia drivers and not let the ASUS setup programs have any thing to do with it.

    Hardware specs:

ASUS M3N72-D motherboard with 3 gig ram, junk drives I had laying around.

AMD Sempron 1250 a single core 45 Watt processor

I built this system to be mothballed. I want to use Win2K until I am either done working or I can't get hardware to work with it. I have moved almost entirely to Linux, but have software that requires Windows. So, I figured I had better build before hardware became to big of an issue. This system is going to be put up and drug out when my current desktop croaks (which I don't anticipate to be any time soon).

A side note, Intel's D945GCLF motherboard with 1 gig ram and the single core Atom Processor appears to work with Win2K. I haven't tested much, just got it to install and was able to install the drivers. I may play with it a bit before it gets set up as a penquin server. If I do, I will post an update.

  16.

Do you mean concerning current and upcoming hardware?

Yes current, and upcoming. When it comes time to retire the current desktop, I don't want to have to be searching the dark crannies of the hardware universe to put a system together that will run 2K. My thought is that it would be cheaper and easier to acquire said hardware, and drivers, before compatibility becomes to big of an issue.

    Thanks.

  17. Has anyone found any hardware issues with Windows 2000 Pro yet?

I am guessing that if one doesn't get exotic with hardware selection then there won't be any issues. I want to stay with 2K for as long as possible and am wondering if I need to be considering new hardware sooner rather than later.

Really I am almost entirely on the penquin, but have some apps that are not available and need the dual boot option. The apps run OK in a virtual machine, but with heavy items they just run better natively.

Thanks in advance for all your input.
