  1. I don't have much experience with OS/2, but what I certainly can tell you is that you got the wrong area to post your thread. Anyway, welcome aboard !
  2. ) And thats ownage to me! Well, I don't know if I've been smoking pot or something, but honestly I've been searching for the past time and I couldn't find anything about this jack. Actually, anything about any of the laptop's jacks. I'm not the kind of guy to quickly post in a forum for plain simple questions as I don't have the patience to wait for a reply, but this time I got owned. Anyway, guess that jack's for the docking station judging from the pin assignments, so this gives me two options : 1.Either I make a adaptor for just the video pins OR 2.Find a docking station. (which is preferable, but not so likely to happen as ebay doesn't seem to have one and amazon, if I remember, doesn't work for my country) Alas, thanks for the links, I'll bookmark them !
  3. Quite a rarity I think, considering the low production numbers it had. Anyway, I'm atempting to bring this grandpa to a useful state (replace battery, fit a new HDD, etc) and while studying it, this jack came to my attention : It looks like a DVI jack but it sure isn't. Anyway, from the scraps of documentation I've found on the net, the laptop should be having a video-out connector. That would be really cool as staring into a monochrome LCD takes away what little fun there still is in the likes of DOOM I. Does anyone recognise this connector type and tell me what its for ? Thanks.
  4. Don't quote me on this, but I think that on some flash anims/youtube videos, it might happen that flash would chew a ton of GDI resources, causing the lag. There's a experimental project here ("GDI Heap Extender") which you could try. Its odd though because I'm also running flash 9 on really new hardware and I don't have problems.
  5. I wonder if you could ever change the url coded in that function to point to a comunity-made repository maybe (?)
  6. Thanks a ton guys! Since eidenk mentioned vcache, I was almost certain that that was the problem. I tried a different method of managing RAM, using HIMEMX, MaxPhysPage=4800 and MaxFileCache=65535. Since doing these amendments, I also discovered that by installing the Intel chipset drivers, I would break the video driver. Anyway, with sound, video, network and USB via unofficial patch, I don't think I have to worry about the Intel drivers. I'll see if I'll run into anymore memory problems (right now I'm using 1152mb out of 2GB RAM).
  7. As the title says, I'm unable to make this graphics card work. Its a Geforce 6200 (no suffix), 256mb manufactured by Gigabyte, running on AGP. What I tried so far were the stock drivers (76.45), the 81.98 drivers and the unofficial 82.69 drivers. After installation, I end up with 640x480, 16 colors. NvCplDaemon, nwiz and NvMediaCenter fail to load in the tray/background at startup (no error, they simply don't show). I am able to chose from 16 colors-16bit color mode and resolutions up until 1024x768, but they don't work. I do a reboot. After that, I get a errorbox with "There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware." Oh and it also happens that when the progress box with the drumrolls anim appears, it stalls at the end. I have to End Task "Windows Setup" and after that the unresponsive Rundll32. It loads the shell, but still no working drivers. Other stuff : -unofficial 82.69 drivers throw a "unable to find X" box after reboot. I manually enter the path to the unpacked files and it only complains about a version conflict. They don't work nonetheless. -stock driver happened to either give the errorbox mentioned above or block me in a loop of Unhandled Exception BSODs right after the Win98 load screen. Does anyone have any idea about what could be wrong ? I also used Driver Cleaner before attempting to install another video driver. PS: it says that the entire 256mb VRAM is integrated, so no Turbo Cache here, and the Gigabyte-assigned name is GV-N62256DP2-RH if it helps.
  8. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but on Win7, it doesn't work. (first it complains about not being able to run fullscreen and after that it crashes because of a .PIF file)
  9. Excluding the G31 chipset, I think I've settled for MSI's P4M900M3-L board which looks pretty decent. (I'll have to ditch the DDR400s unfortunately) Next thing is to find a suitable GeForce and pray that all will work in the end. (I'd also have to check the shop's return policy) EDIT: Upgrade proposal : mobo -> MSI P4M900M3-L video -> Asus Geforce 7300GT (256mb) RAM -> 1GB Kingmax (667Mhz) I'll probably try to expand the RAM in the future, but these are the specs I'm running for now. If anyone has any comments/advice/warnings, please tell.
  10. No chance in hell to find anything on AGP. Its either Nvidia FX5500 or ATi's HD series. That's all I've found, either on the net or locally. Given the situation, I'm willing to risk using PCI-E. Although I'd gladly follow your mobo recommendations , I'm afraid that 4core/dual-VSTA shares the same fate as with my AGP cards. Its nowhere to be found. Alas, what I did manage to find is a ton of mother boards with Intel ICH7 (which, unofficially, it seems that it can be made to work) coupled with a Intel G31 chipset. I'd risk going for such a board, but I couldn't find anything about this Intel G31 (it seems to be something, multimedia-related; that's all I could find). What do you guys know about this G31 ? Is it vital and if yes, can it be made to run (un/officially) ? Thanks again for your help!
  11. Well, in "Compatible hardware with Windows 9x", it is stated that Also I recall reading through some threads that there were unofficial drivers made for Geforce 7000-9000? series. EDIT: Oh, here it is, from the same thread as mentioned above :
  12. I have a Gigabyte GA-8IPE775 motherboard (my mobo's specs) and I want to replace it with a newer mobo on which I can run Win98SE/ME. I'm replacing this mobo because all supplies of AGP, Win98-compatible video cards with SM3.0 support (new and second-hand) have been exhausted in my town and I have to upgrade to PCI-E. All that I want to change is the graphics card (X1300-incompatible with 9x) and the motherboard. The minimum, vital specs that I need are : - 775 CPU Socket (for my P4 CPU that I don't want to change) - DDR 400 support (I recently bought a RAM upgrade and I don't want to ditch 2GBs of RAM) - PCI-e support Oh and my budget would be of maximum 100 EUR. If someone from Romania knows a big IT company that sells mobos with these specs, please tell me. I'm really exasperated because every mobo I find has only DDR II support and those with DDR 400 are either of the wrong socket or with AGP and no PCIe. Thanks in advance!
  13. Thanks jaclaz. As for the "Windows 2000 total slipstream " tutorial from vorck.com, the SOURCESS folder was created with no problem, only the iso wasn't generated. Copied the folder in a virtual machine and triggered Setup from WINNT32.EXE (I386 folder). When copying files, it complained about a missing wm_setup.exe, which I expected as it was said that wmp9 won't be installed with 2K. Rebooted and at the file copying process, it started warning about missing files : -acgenral.dll -layers.dll -specf.dll -beartown.bmp (WTF?! Couldn't find the file anywhere on Google) -cmnquery.dll -dsquerry.dll -dssenh.dll -extenum.ldf -final1.inf -final2.inf -fips.sys -tltlib.inf -tltmc.inf -tltmgr.exe -irenum.inf -ldap.inf ... I checked the KBs & Co from HF against the list of KBs that shouldn't be used with the FDV files; they were all OK. What did I miss/What could have went wrong ? Is there any more information I can provide ? PS. I ran HFSLIP on Windows 7 (with Administrator privileges).
  14. Don't know if it helps, but I've heard about unofficial drivers made for on-board Intel video cards. Maybe that'll help somewhat ?
  15. Well, patience and will are key. I'll be sure to check your fileset as its indeed better to prevent than to mop-up the mess, but firstly, I'll try to compile a 2k setup as in Vorck's tutorial and then check the files. Tidying-up the registry with a modded setup will come probably at a later stage (after I decide on what to throw-away).
  16. Indeed. I've read that dlls "puke" a lot of stuff into the registry, but by physically removing them from a running installation, wouldn't that lead to the child keys becoming "dead links", thus ending as targets of any reg-cleaning program ? Oh and thanks jaclaz for the "cleaning methodology" from one of your links. I guess that a first goal would be to compile a list with the vital system files and their dependencies. After that, make a list with the rest of the dlls and sort-out those that I'd like to keep based on the functionality they provide. Check the dependency chain for the dlls that I want to keep. And finally, wipe-out what's left.
  17. The minimal XP project is pretty cool. I might be tempted into doing something similar for 2K, but the abomination that is the Registry really frightens me (to be more precise, the gory task of trimming tons of reg keys really keeps me away). If I'd have a bare-bones template of the Registry containing just enough to get you past the loading screen and dump you on the empty background, or at least infos on what major branches to keep in the Registry, that would be excellent. (I presume that from a certain "level", Windows is smart enough to generate its own keys). Anyway, I'll be checking the NT4 "implant" for incompatibilities with games & stuff. I hope that programs, who don't depend on the Windows GUI stuff won't have problems running.
  18. See if either of these help : http://www.felgall.com/doswin58.htm http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en...e2-3c8b50ac550b jaclaz Thanks for the links! Mea culpa, it seems that indeed, Folder Options covers the problem for this one. Thanks Colonel O'Neill and jaclaz for your help on this one! EDIT: Tried integrating Minlogon and the NT4 shell within 2K's Setup. Even with the .reg file included, it still BSODs at the Logon Procedure. It seems that Minlogon has to be applied manually, which also forces you to modify the shell manually, after Setup. An inconvenience, but nothing "mission-critical".
  19. Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm afraid that the KB's solution is only for "normal" files, while Folders and My Computer are a different story (no extension and you'll never get to choose with what to open them, unless changing the registry). Well, maybe in the registry, they are treated the same as any other file, but still, I don't think I'd find folders in the File Associations tab.
  20. I found out why double-clicking folders and My Computer opens Find. Its because of a registry screw-up that configures the default double-click action as "Search..." and not "Open". (when right-clicking, "Search..." was highlighted and not "Open". Does anyone know, by chance what is the name of the reg key that configures the default action on double-clicking, for folders and My Computer ?
  21. I've seen others managing to make NT4's Explorer run under XP or Vista, but as much as I struggled with Dependency Walker and RegEdit, I didn't manage to do much. So I thought on doing a radical action: completely replace Win2k's Explorer (together with its dependencies - Shell/32.dll,Comctl,Comdlg, etc) with NT4s (no SP) Explorer and dependencies. In my experiments, I realised that Winlogon depended on 2k's shell32.dll and because of it being replaced, the Logon procedure BSOD-ed. At first, I tried to also replace Winlogon, msgina and everything that was related to accounts management and login/out. The best result I obtained here was to bring to life NT4's "Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to log-in" messagebox. After that, it blabbered something about missing user account information and BSOD at the end. I also thought that instead of trying to replace the entire login mechanism, which would lead to a entire chain of broken dependencies, I thought of trying to find a way to bypass the Logon procedure and sign-in automatically as System (I'm not worried about the potential security risks. I know the risks involved, but I'm not interested in that). And so, I found XP Embedded's Minlogon which due to the fact that it throws down the garbage the entire accounts system and logs you in as System, it fitted the job perfectly. Plus it seems that it is more memory-friendly than the normal Winlogon.exe After nailing the "Logon Procedure terminated unexpectedly" BSOD, I went on to implanting NT4's shell. To my surprise, it worked ! And here is the result of my labour : As you can see, the System Applet clearly shows its NT5, not 4, in the background, you can see NT4's IE-free Explorer and also Taskmanager showing the very low memory usage of the system. I had to change all the cpl's with the NT4 versions and I also had to expand NT4's sndvol32.exe because the 2k one failed to load (vanished from start-bar). Known bugs : -keyboard dead when trying to write text and when typing a file's name for quick jump in explorer (short-keys work though -ie. CTRL+C/V/X, WinLogo+E, etc) -My Computer desktop icon links not to Explorer.exe but to NT4's Find -clicking on a folder in the right-hand window of Explorer will also open Find instead of the folder (although Find does open pointing at the folder that you tried to access) -double-click doesn't work on opening stuff, instead pops-up the context menu with "Copy files Here/Create Shortcuts Here" -deselecting a file from a selection group will paste all items selected in the current folder. -default-installed Microsoft games (minesweeper, solitaire, etc.) and Outlook are erased. Other programs are missing short-cuts on the startbar (kinda expected that to happen) -NT4 Explorer doesn't seem to use its default icons (probably it accesses a 2k-version library which contains newer icons and not the default NT4 set) Other than that, everything works perfectly fine ! (Oh, and no IE whatsoever) Comments, suggestions are welcome. EDIT: Please excuse me! I put the image without the Task Manager. Fixed.
  22. I actually downloaded the DDK from there. Thanks for the link.
  23. Wow! That's more than enough to get me started ! Thanks a ton everybody and especially eidenk for the bounty of links !
  24. Since its summer vacation and I don't have too much to do, I thought on giving it a try and learn how VxDs work and maybe try my hand on making some crude tutorial-like drivers. As far as I've managed to find out, a DDK is vital as its name suggests, but the problem is that I haven't managed to find anyone who happened by chance to upload the 98SE DDK on the "internets" . As for licenses and forum rules, I don't know how the DDK is classified as. Is it legal for it to be uploaded/downloaded, because, like with any other 9x-related stuff, M$ retired most of the stuff, so any Win98 DDK links are dead. Also, except for the DDK, are there any introductory documentations/tutorials on VxDs ? I'm asking this because although I know C++ syntax and how to code something, I have absolutely no practical experience with drivers. I don't know their code-"anatomy", I don't know nothing on this issue. A summary of my knowledge on this area would be wikipedia's article on VxDs and some general knowledge of how INFs work and their syntax, so I'm practically a "tabula rasa" . Any help on the matter is highly appreciated. Thanks!
  25. Hate to be unearthing the dead, but I reached a crossroad with two news: Good news is that the driver's dll dependencies seem to be satisfied. Bad news is that even with the Vendor ID string inserted, it still doesn't recognise the INF as related to my hardware. Just thought on asking if there's anything that can be done with this bunch of dlls and exes.
