Not sure if this is exactly the answer you're looking for, but in Windows XP (probably Windows 2000 as well) there is a registry key for all of your mounted storage media devices at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices If you want to start from scratch, you can safely delete everything in the right panel except the (Default) and upon a reboot have Windows re-detect your devices and give each a letter accordingly to its hierarchy in the system.
