  1. I solved the problem. In case anyone's interested how, look here. Thanks for trying, everyone.
  2. Never mind, it's working now Thanks to Linux I managed to get it to work. Turns out it was 2829, Device Manager only reported 2828 because it was emulating an IDE controller. I enabled Sata native mode, booted Kubuntu 8.04 (installed alongside XP) and issued an lspci -v -nn command. Here's the relevant part of its output: 00:1f.1 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) IDE Controller [8086:2850] (rev 03) (prog-if 8a [Master SecP PriP]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device [103c:30d8] Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16 00:1f.2 SATA controller [0106]: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA AHCI Controller [8086:2829] (rev 03) (prog-if 01 [AHCI 1.0]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device [103c:30d8] Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 220 So I modified that registry file: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\pci#ven_8086&dev_2829&cc_0106] "Service"="iaStor" "ClassGUID"="{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor] "Type"=dword:00000001 "Start"=dword:00000000 "Group"="SCSI miniport" "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 "ImagePath"="system32\\drivers\\iaStor.sys" "tag"=dword:00000019 "DisplayName"="Intel AHCI Controller" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor\Parameters] "queuePriorityEnable"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor\Enum] "0"="PCI\\VEN_8086&DEV_2829&SUBSYS_30D8103C&REV_03\\3&B1BFB68&0&FA" "Count"=dword:00000001 "NextInstance"=dword:00000001 I added it to the registry, rebooted, enabled Sata native mode again, and this time XP started without a glitch. The "Found new hardware" popped up. When it asked for the driver for the Ahci controller I pointed it to the folder containing iaahci.inf, etc. It was not necessary to modify iaahci.inf at all. I hope someone finds this useful.
  3. James_A, thanks for the tips. I changed 0101 to 0106 but still no joy. Anything else I could try?
  4. I looked for 2828 in iaahci.inf and got 0 matches. There is this line PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2829&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller" but as you can see it's 2829. Here's what I did: - I followed step 2 of this guide, only I replaced 2821 with 2828 - I followed step 3, only I modified it with data taken from Device Manager: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase\pci#ven_8086&dev_2923&cc_0106] -- the part after the last backslash became pci#ven_8086&dev_2828&cc_0101 "Service"="iaStor" "ClassGUID"="{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor] "Type"=dword:00000001 "Start"=dword:00000000 "Group"="SCSI miniport" "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 "ImagePath"="system32\\drivers\\iaStor.sys" "tag"=dword:00000019 "DisplayName"="Intel AHCI Controller" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor\Parameters] "queuePriorityEnable"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor\Enum] "0"="PCI\\VEN_8086&DEV_2923&SUBSYS_B0051458&REV_02\\3&13c0b0c5&0&FA" -- this became "0"="PCI\\VEN_8086&DEV_2828&SUBSYS_30D8103C&REV_03\\3&B1BFB68&0&FA" "Count"=dword:00000001 "NextInstance"=dword:00000001 - I saved the .reg file, added it to the registry and rebooted - I enabled Sata native mode in my bios and rebooted again The result was the same STOP error on a BSoD Can someone please point out what I'm doing wrong?
  5. Hi. I have an ICH8M sata controller and I was wondering is this guide applies to that one too. Specifically, those numbers in iaahci.inf -- changing "2821" to "2923" -- are those the right numbers for ICH8M too? Thanks
  6. Thanks, outcastc, but neither of those is going to work for me because they both imply reinstalling xp, which I don't want to do. Any idea how to do it without reinstalling?
  7. Hi. I installed windows XP sp3 32bit a few months ago, with "Sata native mode" disabled in bios. Now I would like to install the sata drivers (and then enable "Sata native mode"), but I don't know how. My specs: HP Compaq 6720s; "Intel ICH8M 3 port Serial ATA storage controller - 2828", "Hitachi HTS542512K9SA00" 120G SATA hard drive (Device Manager says so). I found this guide but it's for ICH9. Would it work with ICH8M ? Thanks
  8. The problem was "Microsoft VM for Java". So XP Pro SP3 doesn't come with that VM installed by default? Then some other program installed it, because it was listed in "Add or remove programs". Once I unistalled that and Sun Java and reinstalled Sun Java the games work fine in Yahoo! Messenger. Thanks everyone!
  9. I checked if Java worked in IE and, to my surprise, it didn't. The same red X appeared instead of the Java applet. I unistalled and reinstalled Java, and now it works in IE. However, when someone accepts my invitation to play a game, Yahoo! Messenger crashes with a error message saying something like "the instruction at [...] referenced [...]. The memory could not be 'written'." It doesn't even get to showing that red X. By the way, I tried Yahoo! Messenger version 8.0.0.508 and the problem is exactly the same.
  10. Hi there! I installed the "recommended" version of sun java - their site says it's installed. I have Yahoo! Messenger 8.1.0.421. When I invite someone to play a game and they accept the invitation instead of the game only an image placeholder icon appears (a red X). I use K-Meleon 1.5.0 as my default web browser and java works fine there. Some people (supposedly IT specialists) told me that getting Yahoo! Games to work on laptops can be tricky, and they suggested that I uninstall and reinstall Yahoo! Messenger until the games finally work. This however doesn't seem like a proper solution to the problem. So what should I do ?
  11. That's too bad. Thanks for your help, enuffsaid
  12. yes, I use two keyboard layouts. There's another thing: the language bar's icon doesn't show which layout is active. Instead it show a keyboard. Is there any way to make it show the active layout (something like EN or FR instead if the keyboard) ?
  13. Hi everyone! Is there any way to get win2k-style keyboard layout switching (internat.exe) in xp pro? Or at least to get xp's language bar to go in the systray, not next to it ?
  14. What computer type should i choose if i have a Intel Core 2 Duo processor ? Please don't say "Automatic is your best bet" or something similar - everywhere i searched the answers were like that.
