  1. I need to monitor a USB port so that I can find out the types of device plugged in (make and model if possible) and the data that is passed to, and from, the port. This needs to be be hidden from the user and run as a service in XP pro (not because I am using it for illegal means - quite the opposite - its to track a suspected theif (which is legal in the UK)). It needs to be freeware or failing that then the best known commercial solution. thanks in advance for any help. I hope someone can help By the way I have looked on Google but the only ones I can see are really bloated apps with no stealth capability and more suited to diagnostics than investigating user activities thanks
  2. WOW ! Thank you very much indeed. I hadnt expectd such a comprehensive list thanks
  3. I would take the advice of those above, if I were you OP. I put 2008 on 3 servers so far that are low end specs 32bit - not on any approved list - They were all dell servers admittedly, but all the same I had expected good results. first off none of them would utilise the graphics card properly. Also I had problems with other basic board drivers - intel chipset drivers etc. If you are desperate to get 2008 on there then you have to think of the hardware as an investment because otherwise its gonna be a disappointment. I am just ordering a new server myself.
  4. You need to understand about permissions on shared files. You dont say if youre running the server as a domain controller or for some reason as a mere member in a peer-peer relationship with other computers. I would guess from your question its not a domain controller. The easiest simplest way, but by no means the best, is going to be to make users with the same names and passwords on the host computer (the one hosting the shares) as those that are on the computers accessing the shares - then right click the shared folder - hit the security tab and drop in the names of those with rights to access - also after doing this ensure that in the permissions on the shared folder tab that these names are visible after this go to the computer from where the shares are going to be accessed - right click "my computer" then map a drive to the share
  5. HI could anyone tell me what the fastest CPU I can use in a Optiplex GX240 please I just took a 2.8Ghz cpu from a Optiplex gx270 and would like to know if it will work in my gx240 which currently has a 1.6Ghz processor in it. Thanks !
  6. Actually in the USA this is no longer the case. In the USA they have just made laws to make copyright offenses a federal criminal matter. i believe Australia and the UK are making plans to do the same
  7. A lot of people ask this in forums its because your password probably doesnt meet the complexity rules Try using a password with at least one uppercase letter and a number that is 8 characters long like this AbR17x65
  8. Sorry i hope this is what you were looking for. If I understand correctly you want to edit a WIM file? But when you try to install it doesnt list one of your edits? I think this will help - maybe you missed outsomething http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/...eployments.html Please forgive me if I didnt understand
  9. You dont need a logon script you just need to look at terminal services management in the admin tools on control panel and in the client settings i know its a simple procedure because I done that using a win2k server Oh wait - are you running Term Services in administrator mode or in applications mode ?
  10. Its unwise to rename a domain controller but if you do then you should run dcpromo I think This deals with the issue here but I think it would have been better to demote the server to a member server and then promote it back to a DC http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782761.aspx This may go some way to addressing your problems but IMHO I think you should now entirely demote the server and repromote it then demote your clients back to non AD clients and re-enrol them into the newly promoted server
  11. Hi there it occurs to me that you could use the MAC addresses to kep out as many of the computers as possible and include as many as you want but also you could use your router to filter the two kinds of traffic to different servers
  12. I have hit this problem that I need to resolve. I have Acronis True Image and have scheduled a backup procedure using that. However we are limited on drive space so to clear some of the logs that Microsoft Exchange leaves behind, I do a backup with NTbackup = this automatically deletes the restore logs from Exchange and therefore frees up some space (those logs are crucial to exchange and can only be deleted by "exchange aware" software Heres the crunch though: If I schedule NTbackup to run then after that is finished the Acronis is run on a schedule(about 2 hours later) then Acronis stops with an error saying that It cannot read from the drive to be backed up. This only happens if NTbackup is scheduled and doesnt matter if NT backup runs or not I then have to delete the acronis schedule, and reschedule it - then do a reboot Is there any way to get around this? I must have NTbackup sceduled unless theres a way that acronis can safely delete the exchange restore logs I have heard about people who say NTBackup is killed by Acronis, but I cant find it the other way around - also acronis support is ridiculous on this subject and suggest they have fixed all problems to do with VSS and that this is not their problem but a NTBackup or a Win 2k3 problem
  13. that is because windows server recognises http://matrix.com as being different to http://www.matrix.com in DNS just write a record so now all requests to www.matrix.com will be forwarded to 10.2.8.91
  14. How to manually extend the evaluation period When the initial 60-day evaluation period nears its end, you can run the Slmgr.vbs script to reset the evaluation period. To do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, and then click Command Prompt. 2. Type slmgr.vbs -dli, and then press ENTER to check the current status of your evaluation period. 3. To reset the evaluation period, type slmgr.vbs ?rearm, and then press ENTER. 4. Restart the computer.
  15. I cant get win2k8 to change the monitor refresh rate. I have used two monitors - a sony trinitron multiscan 200sf and a compaq p910. I even tried a utility called refresh force after searching MSFN threads for similar topics. The monitor just will not go above 60hz and when I used refresh force it couldnt query the monitor under win 2k8 - yet when I load win 2003 back onto the server that is ok so I know its not a hardware problem. If anyone has any ideas on this or knows of utilities or a fix I would be grateful for your input - Many thanks
  16. Its easier if you look at a diagram really Diagram of my network http://i34.tinypic.com/1z2khaq.jpg Basically mine is a 2Mb cable modem connection with a sonicwall TZ170 Firewall behind it Attatched to that is the family members desktops with a AD windows 2000 server and a Nas Drive for backup storage and software downloads Behind the TZ170 I have a Firebox 2 which I converted to DD-WRT using this method http://www.ls-net.com/m0n0wall-watchguard/ off of this I have a LAN hub that has my NAS Raid array drives and a couple of test servers (when I am experimenting with setups etc and teaching myself new things) one running SUSE Enterprise Linux and the other on Win 2008 - then I have an Optiplex desktop and a few odd bits like KVM switches etc I dont like wireless connections as I find them unreliable and insecure
  17. Then switch it off! If you think that's a security risk then you need to look at this picture http://obligement.free.fr/images/windows_firewall.jpg buy a decent hardware firewall - maybe a wired sonicwall tz170 pick one up for a hundred or so second hand
  18. Maybe your drivers for the Lan card arent installed? what errors do you get? Obviously the hardware is working but you have either misconfigured, failed to configure, or forgotten to configure, the software or else some software is not installed. Have luck with that
  19. Microsoft Shared Computer toolkit is just the exact solution you need. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...ss/default.mspx please take a look here - it describes the EXACT scenario you want to address - its a microsoft PDF and its where I got the above link. This document is well worth the read http://download.microsoft.com/documents/uk...d-computers.pdf
  20. OK thanks for the info. I was under the impression that I would be able to boot into windows itself from an image on the network. Perhaps a smaller version than the standard XP pro. I realise I can do installations across the network to client machine with disk drives but maybe I was mistaken or confused when I thought booting to the XP GUI, without resorting to Terminal Services, was possible. Good links though - thanks geek !
  21. h there. Please can someone take pity on a simpleton (me), and help me out. I have a specific problem. I want to create a diskless desktop client which boots XP from the LAN using PXE. my problem at the moment is very simple I dont understand what kind of disk image it would be that gets served to the desktop. Is it simply a standard ISO image or do I need special software ? Once I know the answer to the above I can proceed to try and get my client machine to boot up. Does anyone know of a simple guide that would walk me through the entire procedure ? I can find precious little on the web that gives this type of info to relatively inexperienced techies, and even when I searched the forums here I may have overlooked something but cant find the very basics of this question discussed. I see a lot of people have managed to do it but they dont seem to do a step-by-step howto. I have Windows Server 2008 if thats any help to know, and I do have a lot of experience in setting up servers but just not in this particular area of booting windows. thanks very much (in advance) for any help. It is appreciated.
  22. Hi there, I thought it would only be polite to make my first post here. This looks like a extremely knowledgeable community. It will be a priviledge to post here and hopefully I will be able to actually answer a few people when they have problems. I have a few questions about booting windows and network installations etc. someone I know told me, you guys know everything about booting windows and it really looks like you do. So I decided to register and get into the spirit of the place. Amazing site here it really is - a stack of news and high quality info - Thanks for havin me here !
