So far Opera 10.5 is only in MSI format. Granted it's early yet, but it seems extremely likely that Opera itself will still work fine on 98SE as it always has. Most likely just the MSI is incompatible with 98SE. Encourage Opera to be proper and release a non-MSI distribution or allow third-parties to release a 98SE-compatible release (taken out of the MSI wrapper) so the Opera 10.5 will be available for 98SE. Isn't that implying violation of EULAs? Office XP's activation is no problem if you use the software within the EULA, and if you want to all-out pirate, there's ways around it. Reasonable. I would recommend Netscape 4.8 instead however. Cool. I'm partial to Avast! Antivirus myself.

I never had too much trouble installing RealPlayer itself if you're very careful to play with the association settings and other installation settings. Version 8 isn't a bad choice.

I thought it would be a good idea to have some important software, sorted by Category. I have added some of my own software and have used some from various lists. Each software has a comment on how it works and my like of it, so that's the big difference between this and other lists. Revisions: 1.0 Original. 1.0.1 Fixed errors, updates in Opera section. 1.1 Added Virus & Spyware section. Web Browsers: Firefox is a popular web browser. Upsides of firefox include it is very popular, it is well-supported by websites, it has a good interface, and it is very extensible. Downsides include System Memory/Resource usage, lack of support by v3 for 98se without hacks, and being light on features by default. Overall, it's a good choice for 98SE systems, but older systems might want to consider something else. Kernelex is required to support v3 or v3.1 beta on 9x. http://www.getfirefox.com Opera is a lightweight web browsers with lots of features. The main downsides are lack of support for some websites, and minimal expandability. Opera runs on all 9x versions, and the latest version works fairly well on 9x. It includes a web browser, mail program, irc client, and even a web page editor. The downside is that SeaMonkey can be rather bloated. The latest version supports 9x fully, but the next version is not likely to. K-Lite Codec Pack is not compatible (unfortunately) with 98se past version 2.88, despite the guide's declaration. I also have not been able to get GIMP versions past 2.2 on 98se. I did some fiddling but Kernelex was of no help. My test was the latest version, 2.6.x. GIMP is still great, but 2.2 is the limit for 98se. VLC is not compatible with 98se past 0.8.x AFAIK. And may I suggest X-setup Pro, a TweakUI-like but far more sophisticated tool; version 9.1, the latest version, is supposed to work with 98se if the box is properly configured and upgraded. WMP10 is of course hackable into 98se, as is Firefox 3 and OpenOffice.org 3, perhaps that should be mentioned. For web design, Kompozer is a great package, that works even on 95, and thus on 98se as well. GXexplorer is a handy explorer shell for 95 and later. CONTEXT Programmers editor is a nice editor, as is emacs, which is compatible with 95 and later, and is of course a unix holdover. The VIM editor is also very nice, and offers a 32-bit DOS version (good for DOS mode editing sessions!) and a GUI Win32 version, both compatible with 98se, and the DOS version runs well in a DOS window. Abiword is a nice lightweight word processor. I downloaded and installed Firefox 3.1 on Kernelex 0.3.6 Win98se modded with Auto-Patcher and 98SP3. Firefox 3.1 installs fine once you tell setup you have XP in the INI file for Kernelex but the program has two problems. Both are font-related issues and both are solvable by removing compatibility.ini from Firefox 3.1's profile folder before you start Firefox. You must do this every time you start firefox, so make a batch file and use that instead . I also do not know if this had anything to do with my fix but I found it while using Profile Manager at each startup (the /profilemanager option), which can be added to a shortcut or batch file if necessary. Finally, I do not know if this method applies to or is needed on Firefox 3.0.x. Overall it is important for many to use the latest version of the Firefox browser, and although running 3.1 on 98se is mostly for kicks now, in the future (assuming the trick still works on 3.1 final) this will be important to run the latest web apps.

I've installed the 98SP3 Beta 3 and the Auto-Patcher for 98SE. I now wonder what to install next. Are there any unofficial fixes or updates that have not been included in the auto-patcher and/or 98SP3? I'm fairly sure I installed all official packages. I also want to know about the best place to find PCI128 drivers... that's what my VM uses. I'm happy to download some fun stuff. Great work guys.

Any support for the 780G in Win98SE? I mean like basic level stuff? Does VESA work with the third-party drivers, does NDIS work, does SATA work or is it possible to use PATA? Stuff like that.
