  1. Good morning guys and gals, We have a server that is running MS SQL Server 2000. We need to change the name of the machine that it is running on. If change the name from let's say NM001 to NM005, will that affect the way that the server starts or logs onto the system? Thanks in advance as usual!
  2. Nevermind, found my own problem. In case anyone has a problem with this in the future, essentially the problem is that terminal services by default selects "application server" mode, which requires CALs for access. If you uninstall and reinstall in the "remote administration mode," you get the 2 freebie connections with XP remote desktop, before utilizing the per-device or per-seat licensing for remote access.
  3. Outstanding! A thousand thank you's!
  4. Hey guys and gals, I am trying to remote into a Win2K3 server through Remote Desktop Connection. Everywhere I read says that RDC is indendent of Terminal Server Licensing, yet when I try to connect, I get the message: "The remote session was disconnected because there are no Terminal Server License Servers available to provide a license." Everywhere on Technet I read that no license is needed and it should be automatic to login. I don't need Terminal services, all I need is to be able to login remotely for management. Anyone have any ideas why I get this message and how I can get remote desktop connection to work? Does remote desktop connection work if I uninstall Terminal Services? What's strange is for the past 6 months or so it worked fine, then all of a sudden today it has issues letting in. Thanks in advance as always!
  5. Hey guys and gals, Does anyone know if there is a setting or method for disabling the right-click feature in Windows XP? I have a policy set that locks down a system, but right-click is still available. It won't do any damage b/c the policy is strapped down pretty good, but the user can still goto Start -> Programs -> Startup and delete a necessary app file. How can I get around this? Can I set something in the registry RUN command to start every time the machine reboots without using the startup folder? Thanks in advance as always!
  6. Good morning guys and gals, I am trying to setup an RSA/ACE webAgent/Host to run as single sign on for a web app. I installed RCA/Host version 4.1 and webAgent 5.2. When I lock down my default website, the RSA login screen comes on and works great. The problem is that when the default screen that is protected comes on (which also asks for a local login to the server), that screen says invalid username. Not a big deal, as they can re-enter their user/pass data, but I am trying to set it up so that once they login to RSA, the application can use the data from the RSA authentication. I figure we can set the local users to the password used for their token pin (each user is assigned a 6-number pin which they have to know). The RSA cards have a 6-digit number that changes each minute. So in other words, Fred wants to login to mysite.com 1. He enters his initial pin (123456) then enters whatever is on his token card. 2. The RSA Webagent authenticates and lets him pass to mysite.com What I would like to do is extract the initial pin from the web FORM to use as the password field. (i.e. Fred's password in the local windows account would be 123456). Any ideas how this can be done or how the password can be extracted from the RSA Web Access page? Thanks in advance!
  7. That's the thing, when going in there, any changes made to user enviro affects the administrator as well. There is KB article in MS on how to make a backup copy for the pol file, then logon as user, then go back as admin and copy over the policy with the backup, so that the options do not apply to admin, but that does not work if I want the original policy to not invoke control panel (or any msc or mmc snaps). In NT, we used to do this, but in XP there is no such separation. There's gotta be a way to do this, but no luck yet...
  8. I have a need to secure a single XP PC so that the 'administrator' can do anything but the 'user' can only run 2 programs and have limited access to the PC. In NT I'd use a policy but I can't find it in XP. I have tried the software control but it doesent stop system commands (change desktop/screensaver/other stuff that users do to mod/break their PC's). The main lock I want to use is the 'Allow certain apps for users' but permit the admin to have carte-blanche. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
  9. No luck. Just the basic local security stuff. It's possible to disable the task manager portion of the ctrl/alt/del combo, but then I would not be able to administer the machine in case I needed to stop or start and app. Is the only way to disable to change it through 3rd party software?
  10. Hey guys and gals, I am trying to lockdown an XP system and would like for a standard user to logon automatically when the machine boots into Windows. I would like to start an application, and disable the CTRL+ALT+DEL key so that users cannot interrupt the application. Is there a way that I can do this via Windows registry or various MMC snaps? Can I change CTRL+ALT+DEL to ALT+F5+BACKSPACE, for example? Thanks in advance as usual!
  11. Hey guys (and gals), I have a Win2K3 server running AD in post-2K mode. I created a new sysprep image that I want to store using powerquest. In order to do that, I need to login to a share on the server to run the PQ program and copy my image. When I try to get DHCP and map my drive to my server, command completes as normal. As soon as I browse, I get ACCESS DENIED. I took a look in the shares on the server, and there I was! Had a mapped connection and the server saw me, just would not let me browse. All permission and security look normal. Anyone ever saw this or have any ideas how to get around it? Thanks in advance!
  12. Hello, I apologize if this topic has been addressed in previous topics, but I could not find anything in the search of the forum. I just setup a brand new domain in AD (new tree in a new forest). I go and try to create a user, and I get hit with 'Windows cannot create the user b/c the password does not meet the complexity requirements." I goto the security for the domain and disable anything to do with the user complexity in the GPO. Still the same problem! This is my first at bat with Win2K3 and AD, but with my previous Win2K server, I created users no problem! Is there a change for the Server 2003 version? Is there some default setting in AD that I am overlooking? Thanks in advance for any input!
