  1. Yup, I also mentioned a week ago about turning off JS, in your other thread at: And again, as I said there, there may be times a website will need JS inorder to function something at a particular place so just have JS handy for toggling. Yeah, Noscript is great, I've had the one for Firefox for years working fine (although I've switched back to Opera a couple years ago). Glad you got things going again.
  2. On my slower 98se systems (AMD K6-III 400, 256MB and AMD K6-III+ 600, 384MB), my main browser is KMelion 1.5.4, because it feels fast, doesn't hog memory too much, and is perhaps a little more updated than the other obsolete browsers aforementioned. I do get those stop script errors and they indeed are a pain in the neck/arse. A good percentage of that is obviously from Javascript conflicts, so all I have to do is press F7 to disable/enable JS. For example, I have a bum time getting this msfn forum to load when JS is enabled, so I turn it off when I'm here. It's [almost] smooth sailing after that. Of course without JS on particular websites, JS turned off will disable things like dropdown menu animations, login scripts, buttons, and whatnot. Here at the MSFN board, turning off JS does make things smoother, but some of the menus don't retract, etc. I am ok with that. Right now I am logged in here and writing this with JS off. But Images is turned on because the Reply button is an image, don't know where to click it when it's invisible (maybe webdesigner should've added something like an ALT string to that Reply graphic). When the need arises, I turn on JS here. So all I do is turn off or on JS in KM at particular times at a "problem" website and see what happens. Sometimes there is not anything you can do, so in that case, I will just have to try a different brand browser. But for overall speed I use KM, not to mention with Popups, Images, Animation, Flash and Ads (and the occasional JS) all turned off. I am on dialup most times and all those things off helps get the site downloaded faster. I guess the question is why KMelion dropped 98se support for later version and/or why they could not update 1.5.x to update Javascript. I don't much about JS to comprehend that.
  3. Oops, yeah, Article ID: 182624 is what I meant to link. Great info you found though, thanks. Haven't read everything yet, just here to drop you a line. So oh well, it was worth a try if the Jumbo is not going to work in 98se, supposedly. I will still try to copy 95's Backup to 98se and see what happens, haven't had a chance yet. These were great archival drives for their time, I used them to backup office data stuff. But 40 and 120mb are pretty slim nowadays anyway, it is just an experiment in curiousness. Yes, unfortunately these were the floppy attachment type, not scsi, but I suppose their inexpensive was their attraction to potential buyers vs the relatively more expensive scsi. If nothing else I can always transfer it to my 95 box(s). Yes, I also have the original dos apps for them, though I wonder if those had any release updates. Oh, just remembered my uncle also gave me his old tape backup, heh, can't recall the brand/model, but it is a parallel port model. I will return here if I have anything new to report / comment.
  4. Hey, I have a couple of tape backup drives from the early 1990's, namely a 40MB drive by Mountain and a Jumbo 120MB by Colorado Memory Systems. I do not have the exact model numbers onhand atm. I am talking about for DC-2000, DC-2120 highspeed streaming mini data cartridges. So do these work in 98SE? I am trying to get them to work in a new install of 98SE, in a computer of about the same era (early 90's). It's slow, but it works. Took like 2-3 hours to install it, due to an external parallel port CD drive to do the install, not to mention only a 428MB boot drive to install it to ( a slave drive is also 428mb). Anyway, the Colorado 120MB was originally installed in it and for some reason, 98SE will recognize it during one session, but in a next session (after reboots), it doesn't, then in another session, it does. Quite random. This is seen in Device Manager and senses the device as "Colorado QIC-40". As far as I recall I was able to run this Jumbo 120 in Win 95. However having said that I discovered a few tidbits: 1. QIC-40 not supported in 98SE: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/124730 ( It looks like the Mountain device is not supported, I'm ok with that ) 2. The Backup program (msbackup.exe) in 98SE is now supported/written by Seagate, as opposed to written by Colorado in the 95 version. How ironic since I have a Colorado device. 3. Looking in Device Manager Properties of the "Colorado QIC-40", I cannot assign a drive letter, whether or not point #1 applies. 4. And due to points #2 and #3, I have found that this Seagate MSBackup version requires something called Seagate Direct Tape Access (DTA) inorder to do such mundane tasks as assigning a drive letter. And doing some googling, I found this was a commercial (purchased) software. WTF? Why wasn't Colorado's version good enough to port over to 98SE? Did Colorado go defunct by then? So my questions are now: 1. Can I copy Win95's MSBackup to 98SE and see if that works? 2. Where do I find this DTA? At the moment I don't care if it's legal or not. I've read somewhere that the last version is 4.01 (unless there's later ones). 3. Any 3rd party backup software I can use instead? I did not find a list of tape software in that "Last software for 98SE" sticky thread. Any comments / info appreciated, thanks.
  5. I also use dialup (56k). I also have 10-15 Mbps fiber optic but I only have that available at my other home but I am not there most of the week (work/home situation). But I've actually been on dialup for the longest time, since the mid 1980's and only got broadband (the fiber optic) for the first time in late 2007. Anyway, some other things on the dialup to think about, if you haven't already: 1. Check modem port settings and be sure that "Use FIFO buffers" is checked and that Receive Buffer and Transmit are all the way on High, if available for your internal modem and PC. 2. How old is the phone wiring in your house? If it still uses the old 4-wire "POTS", that can contribute to the dialup slowness. Normally you can connect up to 40-44 kbps on a POTS. 3. Check with your phone service company, maybe they can help "clean" your line (i.e. the line from your house to them), perhaps help filter out line noise, make it DATA line capable (if that still exists), etc. No idea if you have to pay. Or they could add on a new line with newer wiring for your home so you don't use the POTS, if not already done so. 4. A TCP optimizer program (like SG TCP Optimizer.exe by Speedguide.net, etc) might help umm, optimize, your dialup/TCP settings. You have to be careful with these though, you need to know what you're doing. 5. Use a program that monitors your dialup download/upload. Kinda helps you get an idea how fast/slow you're going. I was using VitalSigns NetMedic years ago, though not installed at the moment. It was a great utility, imho. 6. Of course be sure to update your modem drivers, as aforementioned. A fast CPU, fast video and more RAM also helps "speed" up dialup, not necessarily the connection rate, but how fast data is going through your PC. 7. I use the K-Meleon browser (version 1.5.4) on 98SE. It is pretty streamlined and less bloaty than Firefox and Opera (and more updated than IE6). For a quicker dialup session, I can block popups, images, image animation, flash, advertisement, java, JS, etc. Normally I block those first 5. Images have the most bandwidth and the most on a normal website, so I turn it off and will only turn it on (toggle images with F9 key) if I need to look at a graphic, etc. I too am still using 98(SE) and 2kPro, though I'm still learning on all required (wanted) updates for 2kPro. I have read that the unofficial SP5 is unstable because it uses beta files. I have never seen that one at RyanVM, so that is intriguing. I am only up to SP4, and have not used MS auto-updates nor UR1 yet (might be one reason why current versions of VLC Videolan doesn't work!). I am actually use the 2kPro for my home theater PC (Pentium III system connected via DVI to a projector, and 5.1 surround) and it works great. Nice to see movies, TV and Windows desktop on a 100 inch diagonal screen. I think it's pretty stable. I chose 2kPro because 98SE was limiting for this HTPC setup. I did not choose XP only because I would have to buy another copy of it (and new activation key, etc). For my 98SE, I am using Soporific's Autopatcher. Nice work there, makes 98SE more stable and up to date as possible. Also using the aforementioned RP9. I also use Win 7, Win 3.11, Win ME, MSDOS and XP-Home (which is my main O/S, 98SE is 2nd). And still use my Commodore 64's too. Defender is still there I believe, just has not been updated since 2006-2007, unless you do move on to Security Essentials. I installed Defender on a client's XP laptop last month. Seems fine, but again, no new updates, afaik.
  6. Hmm, I have read that uSP5 uses Microsoft beta files, so it is not going to be particularly stable. I think I will skip it (or read more about it first). I have also seen some Autopatcher 2000 files circulating around the Internet, so I am confused if it is legitimate and which one would be the latest and best to install, if it exists. I think I will have to do some manual installation myself. I have not even begun using the Microsoft Automatic Updates yet and as well as UR1. I have also seen there are 50 or so post-UR1 patches as well. Just wanted to see if there was a good 2k autopatcher so that I could install everything as unattended as possible ( much like Soporific's 98SE autopatcher). :/
  7. Just wondering what other patches/updates I need for 2kpro. I only have 2k with sp4, which is basically all that installed from the disc. I briefly read about UR1 but not sure if I need it. I think I can get these at MGDX's site? Do I need to use Windows Update if I manage to get everything from it by downloading mirrored patches?

Considering the B4200 is only emulating PCL6 anyway, you're probably fine with the inbox driver. Would be worth installing Windows 7 and trying these older printers out, to see if they will print using a compatible inbox driver or a generic one. Well, I hope the "B4200 ms" will work, I haven't hooked it up yet. I also have an Oki B4350. When I added the "B4350 ms" driver in W7, the printer gave an error every time I tried to print. After I did a Windows Update, the "B4350 pcl ms" driver showed up and that one worked. Oh, the only other issue I might have is that I am using a parallel-to-usb printer adapter (there's another thread I started here somewhere about it), but again I haven't begun using it yet (too busy atm, so doing some research first). Also, is there another way I can find these stock drivers other than through Windows Update? Does MS have a website for them? Sometimes trying to run WU can be an inconvenience, especially if I don't have the laptop near an internet portal.

Yeah I guess I'll have to contact Samsung support. I bought the printer 8-10 years ago. Still works perfectly and runs on 9x/XP. I have a few more "old" printers I'm trying to find W7 drivers on. These include 3 Panasonic KX-P10xx's (1092i, and older models), a StarMicronics NX-1000II, a Sharp JX-9460PS laser and a Okidata B-4200 laser. The Panasonic and Star dotmatrix printers I could probably use an alternative driver (haven't checked yet). The B-4200 has a W7 driver (via Win Update), but it is not PCL driver (only "MS"). And the Sharp I could probably use an alternative (HP Laserjet III driver, haven't checked yet, if there is one).

Anyone know if the Samsung ML-5050G laser printer is supported in Win7? I Cannot find anything at Samsung websites nor is it available on Windows Update.
  11. Hi, I just got a Windows 7 laptop and these new laptops obviously don't really carry a D-sub parallel printer port anymore these days, since everything is now USB to keep a compact formfactor. I have a bunch of old printers that only have Centronics/parallel ports that I'd like to use with the laptop. Does anyone know, or have tried, if those USB-to-IEEE1284(36pin Centronics interface)printer adapters work in Windows7? There are a bunch on eBay you can buy (in new condition), some as low as $2.00 or $3.00 USD (including shipping). I've read they work up to Vista, but I've seen a couple other sellers saying theirs work in Win7. I've already contacted one of the sellers and they said it doesn't work in Win7. Hmmm, you would think that this type of interface should be Plug and Play, no matter which manufacturer. Note, there are also USB-to-parallel(25pin D-sub interface) adapters, but if possible I'd rather use the one with the Centronics connector so as to directly connect to the printer with the Centronics port. Here is an example eBay search list if you don't know what this adapter is: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=usb+to+1284&_sacat=See-All-Categories
  12. Charles, why don't you try eBay? There are plenty of AGP 2x cards there, used, refurb or sometimes new. Here is one link, currently about 60-70 different cards: http://computers.shop.ebay.com/Graphics-Video-TV-Cards-/27386/i.html?_nkw=AGP+2X&_dmpt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&_trksid=p3286.c0.m301 I have bought a couple of old cards there in the last 1-2 years, one was a fanless Geforce2MX AGP (has a DVI port I needed) and a Matrox Millenium PCI card. Both are currently running in rigs. I don't know your location, so use the correct eBay for your country. And use eBay's "Buy It Now" if you don't want to bid. I think an AGP 2X Geforce2MX should meet your needs (and maybe later models perhaps), though you'll need to once again check specs. Here's another link (Dell forums): http://en.community.dell.com/what-do-i-buy/f/3510/t/18830932.aspx Are there any other specific reasons you want to upgrade video other than just trying to max out potential video card specs for the T500?
  13. What is the Dell model number of the computer? And does it have an AGP slot or only PCI? With the 440BX chipset, it is most likely you are limited to the earliest Geforce series of videocards. Here is a Google search list I did for you: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=440bx+best+video+card&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= I have a 98SE setup on a Hewlett Packard 1.0 GHz Pentium III, with 384-512MB PC133 and i815 chipset. The best videocard I have (which I got for free) is a Geforce Fx-5950 Ultra. This is an 8x AGP card, but it runs fine in the 4x AGP slot on that HP motherboard. You just have to make sure the powersupply is strong enough to run the videocard.
  14. I don't know about nVidia's stuff, but I still have and use my Elsa Revelator 3D LCD shutter glasses, purchased around 1998. Still works great and running on 98SE. Since I use nVidia cards with it, I have it running nVidia's 3D stereo vision drivers (from the early to mid 2000's). This is necessary since the original Revelator drivers are obsolete, plus the Elsa company doesn't exist anymore, so it is fortunate that the Revelator is compatible with nVidia's stereo driver using universal lcd glasses specifications. I've played Half-Life, Quake 2, Quake3, Serious Sam, etc, with it. Just make sure you run your monitor's vertical sync refresh rate at 85Hz or better to get a decent output that doesn't hurt your eyes and brain, since any shutter glasses does the left/right shutter flipping at half the vsync. I try to run mine at 100Hz or faster. You'll just have to check if those drivers you're looking for have one for 98SE. I haven't checked myself.
  15. I have not tried that in 98SE yet, but I did in XP and it still does not work, for DVD, afaik. I press Ctrl-F1 in GOM to see what codecs are being used and it only shows "Video overlay" for video, but nothing for audio. I cannot even use video brightness, contrast and saturation in the GOM control panel box. The two audio volume sliders do work though, lmao. I think you should try, so maybe you can see what is going on (unless it will work for you). Yes, all these A/V effects work for individual Mpeg, Avi, etc files, it's just not working in DVD. There's too many config variables involved and the GOM Wizard is too limited. I did discover that if I checkmark the MPEG2 codec , it makes it worse. And if I tweak more things that I don't know about, it freezes and sometimes makes my XP laptop crash & reboot. Anyway, the perfect DVD software player I've found is the latest version of VLC running inside my XP. Graphic equalizer, video effects work in there. But if I run GOM in the same XP system, none of those effects tweaks work. Sure, the movie is playing, that's it, just can't tweak the A/V. Intervideo WinDVD also works (brightness, hue, etc), but the one in 98SE does not have equalizer or video sharpening. Perhaps it is also the DVD movies I have been using to test it, they are too new (GI Joe:Cobra & Terminator4:Salvation) and may have newer codecs?? I will try with older movies. Basically all I ask for is a 98SE DVD player that can play DVD with working audio graphic equalizer and video effects, especially "sharpen". I have also tried Media Player Classic, which seems to have "sharpen" and equalizer, but the video effects there are grayed out. And you can forget about asking in the GOMLab forum, it's a virtual ghost town there.
  16. Does anyone here use GOM Player in 98SE? When I play a DVD movie in GOM Player, the video effects (sharpen, etc) and audio effects (graphic equalizer mainly), do not work. Does this have anything to do with codecs or is my 98SE broke or infected somewhere? The movies play fine, but it would be nice to use those effects. I do have ffdshow installed (whatever the last version for 98se) and I am able to use the audio equalizer in there while playing DVD, but it would be nice to use the stuff in GOM! I am able to run movies in VLC also and the equalizer works in there, but the last 98se version of it does not have video "sharpen" (later VLC version do).
  17. Have you tried Goldwave or Audacity? Those are little more sophisticated when it comes to audio recording/manipulation than Sound Recorder. Otherwise you can go more complex, like using DAW programs, which I use, but then that is what you don't want. There are many more software recorders out there, one's I've forgot, that are just more obscure... or pricey. As far as mics, you can also try Mic-In, but its quality is less (read: a higher noise floor) than what you can get through Line-In (via an external mixer as aforementioned), or via a USB/FW digital mixer with multiple XLR's/Phone inputs, e.g. M-Audio, Tascam, E-mu, etc. Maybe take 2 cheap mics you can Y-connect into the Mic-In. Granted, this can change the impedance of the connection though. You can also try a USB microphone. A romp through Musiciansfriend.com or Samash.com or Americanmusical.com, etc, might be worth taking too. I'll do a little bit of Googling or get someone that can help you find that perfect tool.
  18. It's just a matter of function. They aren't meant for simultaneous keypresses, except when you use the usual dual key combination with Alt, Ctrl, Shift, etc. I had the same problem with an HP multimedia keyboard that came with a Pentium3 Vectra system around 2001. I couldn't use combo actions in 3D FPS games like forward+strafe+jump keys at the same time. The keyboard would make a beep and the action would freeze for a second, ad infinitum, until you let go of the keys (in this case, Quake2). I'm sure you know that would be highly annoying. I'd call it a form of lag kill, nobody to blame but me, lol. So I went back to a tried and true keyboard I had before which worked, an early 1990's pre-Windows pre-multimedia type. Imho, even if you did find the right ME drivers I linked to above, it would probably not make the problem go away. This is essentially a hardwired design, on the circuit board, no software overrides. Still, you can try installing the driver to be certain. I'm sure things have gotten better because a lot of people (like gamers, I'd suspect) probably whined about it over the years. I'd check that video, but I'm on dialup atm, so no way I'm going to try, heh. Anyway, hopefully you find/buy another one. What keyboard were you using before for gaming?
  19. You can do whatever you want, just be aware there are already dozens (if not hundreds) of sites dedicated to Win 9x. Here's a good example: http://www.mdgx.com/ (MDGx is a regular here too). There is nothing wrong, and it doesn't matter, having Vista as your profile's O/S. Mine says XP , but I dink around with other platforms (and I could change it to another OS if I wanted).
  20. Wow, I can't even find that exact model# at Logitech site. It must be OEM or old, like late 1990's or so. What else is on that label (or anywhere else). Is there a manufactur date/year?I did not get any search hits for Y-SU61. The closest I can get to finding ME drivers at Logitech is to search for "deluxe keyboard". You'll get hits like iTouch driver/software and/or model Y-SU45. Yes, they still offer WinME drivers. I didn't try downloading any so I hope it's not a broken download/link. There might be drivers somewhere else other than at Logitech.com, but I didn't look long enough. I don't know exactly what yours looks like, of course. Is it a 104-key legacy Deluxe keyboard? Count how many keys there are. You can start here: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/404/&amp...en&legacy=1 Anyway, install them at your own risk if it isn't the correct software. I'm sure you can always revert back to the default ME keyboard drivers. As far as a 'deficiency', I am guessing things have since gotten better. There are gaming keyboards out there now, but I don't have one. Your keyboard is older, but not as old as the generic AT-style 101's. As far as I know, yours is just a Windows keyboard model (hence the Windows logo key), but it is not an Internet multimedia keyboard as I assumed earlier (i.e. audio, off/on, web keys). Of course, as a last resort, find an older keyboard as I suggested (don't you have one in the closet or basement?) or buy a current gamer (or non-gamer) keyboard. Some are pretty inexpensive. Let me know how it goes.
  21. Please find out the model# of that Logitech keyboard. It's probably marked on a label underneath. If this is one of those Internet keyboards, with all the fancy additional keys for audio, off/on, and programmable website links, then could that be the problem? Have you used this keyboard for gaming on other O/S platforms and had no stuck keys?? Find a regular pre-Internet 101-key P/S2 keyboard and see if that works for you. Those use a different chip/circuitry where the keyboard "matrix" doesn't create stuck key issues. Heck, even an older AT-style keyboard should work (those with the big original DIN connector), just get a P/S2 adapter (or maybe a DIN-to-USB one, if they exist). I use an AT keyboard (with PS2 adapter) for 3D gaming and I don't get stuck keys at all, even like 3 or 4 keys all down simultaneously. Can't remember about the even older XT keyboards though (i.e. those without F11/F12), if they work with gaming, it's been a decade since I checked (although I still have a few, just in the closet).
  22. UPDATE on DVDFab: Well, it looks like they finally edited their download webpage, http://dvdfab.com/download.htm , and deleted the "98/ME" in the O/S requirement box. It was there like 1 or 2 weeks ago. I have not tried the latest DVDFab stable version yet (v6.0.7.0), because I am redoing my 98SE box. I had an unfortunate harddisk issue and I didn't have a backup. Anyway, from what I gather, 98/ME support was probably dropped/broken when version 6.x was started earlier this year, but someone probably just forgot to change the system requirements to reflect that. Ironically, DVDFab version 5.1.1.0, back in November 2008, restored 98/Me functionality: There is also a DVDFab 6.1.x beta, but I doubt that, and later stable versions, will fully work with 98/Me. Someone will probably have to change the list in this thread to say that DVDFab will only work from version 5.x and earlier (I don't know about early DVDFab 6.x versions though).
  23. One reason I like DVDFab is the eval/free version has the movie decoding and burning both functioning. Version 5.x works fine, but it doesn't have burning. I don't have 5.2.3.2 (I will have to find it), but I'm assuming that doesn't have burning either (in the free version). Plus the fact every new DVDFab version can decode newer movie securities. Anyway, I hope Infrarecorder can burn decoded movies, as I haven't tried it yet. Oh, I just realized that soporific's Autopatcher98 has Infrarecorder (0.44 I think), just never tried it, heh. I knew there was something vaguely familiar about the name "Infrarecorder".
  24. I don't understand, did they take away 9x support? I can't even find that mentioned at infrarecorder.org and their changelogs . Great to hear! Did you go all the way through a process and, say, try to copy a DVD movie and then burn the copy to disc without a messed up Windows? I will try to download it this weekend when I have broadband available and then I'll return here to say if it did work or not for me.
