  1. 30Apr2009 Greetings. I am hoping sooner or later to find a way to defrag the $MFT on XP boot partitions. See- http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thr...forum_id=709672 Copying all files off the partition, reformatting & copying back can "defrag" the $MFT; but then, of course, there is a boot problem. Anyone know how or have ideas about how to resolve the resulting boot problem? Any helpful replies/insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  2. 4Apr2009 Greetings. Today I started googling network connection (NWC) command line possibilities. I found a nice, simple utility called togglenic & devcon. Does anybody know anything about or have experience with devcon? I found the syntax to dis/en able my NWCs, but devcon seems to work at the HW level not the XP level. That is, enabling with devcon does not enable the NWC like choosing enable on the NWC icon. Enabling with devcon seems to simply enable the NWC that was disabled at the HW level with DevCon. In any case I am looking for command lines to open XP status/properties windows for NWCs and to dis/en able the Direct Parallel connection between two of my XP laptops. Any helpful replies/insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  3. 11March2009 Greetings. Today I found a freeware app that seems to resolve (almost) all of my WinXP popup dislikes - including the ing... popups. I am still hoping to find/hear some how/where how to control the Windows Explorer ing... popups through an ini/reg tweak. Any helpful replies/insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  4. 6March2009 Greetings. I originally posted two questions out of curiosity. So far I've not heard anything nouvelle(novel). The point is not whether CPU usage is 100% or 76%. The point is that the computers are unresponsive/unusable sometimes. Those times are when the Windows Task Manager (WTM) says CPU usage is 100%. I've kept a careful eye on active processes for years. WTM says most of the active processes have 0% CPU usage. Dual core is certainly not the ultimate answer. Using audio edit software on a movie soundtrack can keep CPU usage at 100% for a half an hour. Using video edit software on a movie file can keep CPU usage at 100% for a hours. In any case I still wonder about my original unanswered question. Any replies/insights appreciated. Thank you. 6. 25Jan2009 Greetings. One of my original questions remains unanswered Would/Does this setting affect (actual) CPU usage even when the Windows Task Manager is minimized to the Tray or not even "activated" at all? A few years ago I found a TechRepublic article "Windows XP services that can be disabled". Anyone interested (who joins TechRepublic) could (probably still) find this useful article there. My question/point is not that the TM sends CPU usage to 100%. As I said, it doesn't take much- simply compiling a script sends CPU usage to 100%. Sometimes a copy/move/delete op does as well. Almost all/any multimedia processing certainly does. Sometimes a minimized Opera browser does ... I hope I live to see the day our personal computers can really multitask without the 100% CPU usage unresponsiveness. Maybe Linux already can ... I've yet to ever try/use Linux. Any replies/insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ

  8. 23Jan2009 Greetings. I am appreciative of your/the reply. I am indifferent as to your opinion. Our HW & SW are supposed to be so powerful, but they do not impress me. It does not take much to send CPU usage to 100% on my 3 XP laptops - 1 with 1gb RAM & a Dual-mode, high-performance Mobile Intel® Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor-M at 1.8GHz | 400 MHz FSB 1 with 1gb RAM & a Intel® Celeron® M Processor 370 1 MB L2 Cache | 1.5 GHz | 400 MHz FSB; 1 dinosaur with 160mb RAM & a Pentium II 233 MHz 512 KB L2 cache. When CPU is @ 100%, the computer is mostly unresponsive. I hate trying to work on an unresponsive computer. I used to keep the Windows Task Manager (WTM) minimized in the tray, but that was not good enough for me. I now keep the WTM open all the time (mostly off screen) in the lower right corner. Now I know fairly well what will send CPU usage to 100% & obviously always what the CPU usage is; so I can wait to try to work on the computer until CPU is no longer at 100%. The WTM update speed does affect CPU usage & unacceptably so on the dinosaur laptop. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  9. 16Jan2009 Greetings. I would like to know if there is an ini file (or some thing/way) to edit the default location (& size) that the Windows's Copying.../Moving.../Deleting... popups appear? The popups appear in two consistent locations depending on whether one has used F5/F6 or Send to - in any app that uses Windows Copying/Moving/Deleting. I don't use Windows Explorer at all. I would like to change the default location (and/or size) of these popup windows. Any replies/insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  10. 17Jan2009 Greetings. Two related questions here. 1) Does the CPU Usage update speed affect CPU usage? When I set the update speed to normal, (reported) CPU usage increases materially from (reported) CPU usage with speed set to low. Could anyone confirm that/how much this setting affects (actual) CPU usage? 2) Would/Does this setting affect (actual) CPU usage even when the Windows Task Manager is minimized to the Tray or not even "activated" at all? Any replies/insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  11. 14May2008 Greeting. Formidable! Je vous remercie. IE7 was installed but is no longer. I never use IE anyway. I use Opera & sometimes Mozilla. Who knows what complications SP3 will bring. SP3 rendered one of my pcmcia WLAN card driver utilities nonfunctioning, but the manufacturer released a fix right away ... Merci encore. Regards, AEN Æ
  12. 14May2008 Greetings. Thanks for the reply/suggestion. I thought for sure you had given me the/a solution; however, unbelievably, XP still finds & reinstalls the card - even when disabled in the BIOS. Disabling the card in the BIOS was tricky because the BIOS lists 8 unlabeled IRQs; however, I indentified & disabled the miniPCI/modem combo IRQ. Have you tried this? I'm still hoping to uncover how one could remove the card from XP but not from the laptop. Any insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  13. 11May2008 Greetings. I can relate the following - I found that freeware recovery apps are not too powerful. File Recovery 2.0 impressed me in how it handled recoverying normally deleted files. I found that the DEMOS from Runtime.org: GetBackData, EASUS: ? & Virtual Labs: ? could find lots of files after XP decided to run chkdsk at a reboot & deleted all files on my external HDD. The apps with demos cost around ±$100 ... I wasn't about to shell out to try to recover any of those files ... Fortunately, I lost nothing of value ... lots of files, yes, but neither irreplaceable nor of significant value ... No freeware apps could find any files on that HDD that XP took the liberty to destroy. Some freeware apps might find some files after accidental reformatting ... or so they say. Regards, AEN Æ
  14. 11May2008 Greetings. I would like it if XP would report LAN locations as Local Area Network ... like WinME does; however, both my XPP & XPH laptops report my LAN locations as "The Internet". Why is it that cruddy, old WinME correctly reports LAN locations as LAN but XP does not? More importantly, could I do something so that XP would report LAN locations as LAN? I have three laptops - XPP, XPH & WinME. I use ethernet not with TCP/IP but rather IPX/SPX. When I use TCP/IP for etherLAN, I cannot connect to the internet with my wLAN cards with TCP/IP. If I remove the etherLAN TCP/IP, the wLANs work fine. This of course could be or is a separate question ... In any case any insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  15. 11May2008 Greetings. For various reasons I no longer use the 802.11b miniPCI card installed in my T30. I instead use a 802.11b/g pcmcia card. How can I remove the miniPCI card from WinXP without removing the card from the T30? If I "uninstall" the card, WinXP "finds" & reinstalls the card every reboot. I should not disable the XP Plug & Play service. I do not want to always have the disabled miniPCI icon in my Network Connections window ... Disabling does not remove the icon from the NWC config in WinXP. I do not want the miniPCI icon in NWC anymore because I will not use it. This is one too many NWC icons for my AutoHotKey (AHK) scripts & other configuration settings. My scripts/configs handle between one and three NWC icons. I do not want to have to remove the card. Under WinME uninstalling something from a hardware profile/config removes the item until the user reinstalls the item. WinME does not have the Plug&Play service that XP does. WinME finds the uninstalled but not removed item when Add Hardware is run; however, the user can tell WinME to not reinstall the item. XP P&P finds & installs (even if disabled) the PCI card. For the time being I have modified my AHK startup script to uninstall the PCI card every reboot (when I choose run full startup script). Any insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  16. 11May2008 Greetings. I'm still hoping for the miracle of successfully resolving this issue. Being able to once again bind IPX/SPX to adapters (without having to cleanly reinstall WinME) would successfully resolve this issue. I do not even know yet if cleanly reinstalling WinME would restore this functionality. I presume it would. It should. The 4gb HDD that came with the Toshiba that has WinME is now superfluous because I now have WinME running in the Toshiba on the 40gb HDD that was originally in my ThinkPad with XP. The ThinkPad now has a 250gb HDD ... 4gb HDD ... 10 years ago that was HUGE ... My WinME has all MS updates ... of which there are no more ... I certainly cannot un/re install any adapters that now have IPX/SPX ... not unless I'm ready with a new image file of the WinME c:\ partition to reinstall afterwards ... In any case any insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
  17. 29Apr2008 Greetings. Maybe joining/posting here at MSFN will find the/a solution to this issue. At this time I can no longer bind IPX/SPX to any adapters. I can bind/remove/rebind TCP/IP & other Protocols but not IPX/SPX ... not at all. Two & half years ago I decided to reformat the 4gb HDD in the Toshiba & cleanly reinstall WinME. I have a WinME upgrade CD & the Win98 CD that came with the Toshiba. At first I had no trouble binding IPX/SPX after the clean reinstall. Unfortunately I did not have Drive Image XML like I do now; otherwise I could have restored a fully-functioning back up image of the c:\ partition. Until this IPX/SPX binding problem WinME on the Toshiba was functioning better then ever. I have a Toshiba 4005cds with two PCMCIA slots. WinME shows a separate adapter for the bottom & the top slot for the WLAN & the Surecom ethernet card. WinME shows only one adapter for the Netgear ehternet card whether I use the top or bottom slot. I cannot now bind IPX/SPX to the WLAN card top slot but previously did for the WLAN bottom slot. Because I can use both an ethernet & the WLAN card when the WLAN card is in the bottom slot, this gives me operability. Adapters already with IPX/SPX function fine. I cannot bind IPX/SPX to the Surecom ethernet card in the bottom slot. I cannot bind IPX/SPX to my new USB»Ethernet adapter under WinME but have on my XP laptops. I cannot bind IPX/SPX to my new USB»USB adapter/cable under WinME but have on my XP laptops. It seems I cannot use WinME TCP/IP alone without IPX/SPX for my LAN. I have three laptops. I started using IPX/SPX for my LAN (after acquiring my 2nd laptop) because TCP/IP for LAN conflicted with the TCP/IP for internet through WLAN. I do not need IPX/SPX for internet connections. I now use IPX/SPX for LAN - either ethernet or WLAN. This is not a new problem for me. About a year after the WinME reinstall I could no longer (re)bind IPX/SPX to my three PCMCIA cards (2 ethernet & 1 WLAN). Now (as then) after I double click IPX/SPX, WinME returns me to the ADD/CANCEL popup without binding IPX/SPX. Somehow, I really have no idea now how, I did something & was able to bind IPX/SPX to the PCMCIA cards. I remember choosing HAVE DISK and trying different .inf files. That has not worked for me now. In any case, what is going on here? More importantly, what can I do to restore the functionality to WinME to bind IPX/SPX to adapters? I tried a WinME repair install by running setup in c:\win\options\install, but that did not restore the IPX/SPX functionality. I suppose/hope a clean reinstall would restore IPX/SPX binding functionality, but I hope to find some other, less destructive solution. The problem is NOT that IPX/SPX is not available as an option under Protocols. I tried the Microsoft fix of extracting/restoring inf files to c:\win\inf to no avail. Somewhere along the line something has happened. I don't know what & I don't know what I need to do (other than maybe another clean WinME reinstall) to restore IPX/SPX binding functionality. Any insights appreciated. Thank you. Regards, AEN Æ
