  1. Hi guys, I am resurrecting my old box with 98SE on it.

I have had this computer operating successfully with puppy linux and the wifi was able to connect to my network after ndiswrapper used the same driver.

When I installed the zd1211 wireless driver from http://www.zydas.com.tw/web_driver/ZD1211_USB/Windows/ZD1211USB_Install_4_13_0_0_ALL.zip the computer saw my wireless card successfully, but the packaged wireless tool (ZDWlan) seems to load but then closes for no reason.

Does anyone know of a replacement wifi program for 98 se?

  2. here is the offending little buggers:

besides this , my concern is why I can reboot/ system restore only to a certain prior day (not the last known good boot) and the system works. But it won't stay with that and go forward.

I have to continue to do this certain restore every time to get my system to run.

Usually when you restore to an earlier time shouldn't it continue on from there?

I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

I think I'm going to have to do a complete system restore/re-install, but I'm hoping someone with more knowledge than me has a trick or two I haven't explored to prevent me having to do that.

  3. ok.. yesterday morning I booted up as usual to find that Vista(home premium SP2) wouldn't load.

went to system repair ..it tried to repair but couldn't repair the problem.

next went to system restore.. the most recent good boot wouldn't work, so as a fluke I tried yet another earlier restore point and found that one from 4 days ago allowed the system to boot.

    Once booted I ran SFC/SCANNOW

it found corrupt files but was unable to fix them

it referred me to the CBSlog file which i attempted to read , but it's above my intelligence level.

I am posting the log file in hopes of determining a cause and solution

    and a course of action.

    Computer is a HP6303 1.6 dual core e-2140.. bios america megatrends 5.32

    4 gigs RAM memory

anyone have any ideas or guidance?

  4. There's a quick way you can enable or disable this annoying UAC 'feature' from the command line:

    Disable UAC

    C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

    Enable UAC

    C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

After you enable or disable UAC, you will have to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

  5. You probably know by now , that Windows Media Player 11 has lots of bugs that cannot be resolved by doing a system restore. You must begin anew at the 'factory original software point', to fix anything meaningful with the player.

    there is another way

HERES THE FIX TO UNINSTALL WMP11

You have to delete the registry key in local machine....regedit, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then got to software. look for Microsoft, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer.............. DELETE THE WHOLE REGISTRY KEY FOLDER then reboot, it should ask if you want to reinstall it. That's it.

It's shameful that Microsoft would make it almost impossible to fix or repair or delete WMP11 without having to reinstall Vista entirely, in order to do so.

  6. To better utilize the bandwidth of TCP connections in Vista, the Next Generation TCP/IP stack includes Compound TCP (CTCP).

CTCP more aggressively increases the send window for connections with large receive window sizes and BDPs.

CTCP attempts to maximize throughput on these types of connections by monitoring delay variations and losses.

In addition, CTCP ensures that its behavior does not negatively impact other TCP connections.

In testing performed internally at Microsoft, large file backup times were reduced by almost half for a 1Gbps connection with a 50ms RTT.

Connections with a larger BDP can have even better performance. CTCP and Receive Window Auto-Tuning work together for increased link utilization and can result in substantial performance gains for connections with large BDPs.

CTCP is enabled by default in computers running Windows Server "Longhorn" and disabled by default in computers running Windows Vista.

You can enable CTCP in Vista with the > command prompt> netsh interface tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp

You can disable CTCP with the > command prompt> netsh interface tcp set global congestionprovider=none

  7. You computer will run just fine. In addition you can use nLite to tweak and remove necessary components from your XP install. I have one Pent2 (not my primary computer  ), 350MHz and 256MB of RAM, running XP just fine. Since your have 512 RAM and faster processor, you'll be fine.
Can XP install on top of 98se? or would I just be asking for problems?

It might be possible, but I would not recommend it. You should do clean install, and you should convert your partitions to NTFS.

    Cheers ;)

Cool. Thats what I was hoping. Thanks

  8. There is no certain answer for your question.

You did not said what do you want to do with your computer. And yet more important question is why your computer is not sufficient for you, any more.

I use it for regular internet surfing - light to medium use. It's 7 years old now and starting to 'get cranky'.

It's also getting harder to find 98se compatible software.

My concern is that the box is too old and not enough memory to run XP efficiently. Is this correct?

Perhaps I'm better off buying a new computer (always  )

Can XP install on top of 98se? or would I just be asking for problems?

  9. ok, I'm trying to decide if its worth the expense to install XP on a Pent3 /566 with 512mb memory?

Or would it not be worth it , since it would operate too slowly? (I'm told)

Can XP install on top of 98se? What problems might I expect if I do this?

or am I better off staying with 98se on this box and riding it as far as it goes?

Computer is 7 years old and has been pretty good (until recently).

    Thanks.

  10. Hello. I have been having problems with my burner (BTCBCE1610IM) and decided to 'flash it' to attempt to correct the various problems I was having with it.

(yes, I had reinstalled/updated the driver from Device Manager (a few times) and (checked obvious stuff) to solve the problem before I did this)

I followed the manufacturers instructions carefully and everything seemed to go ok.

When I rebooted, ... my burner was non -responsive and my E drive (CD burner) was missing.

I tried to get Windows to recognize it through "add new hardware" nothing.

    Tried "system restore" nothing.

Anyone know a way to get the OS to recognize the burner again? or am I screwed?

Will disconnecting /reinstalling the burner help?

    thanks.

    98se Pent 3/566 Compaq Plss-sorry-O

  11. Well, I'm not sure I want to type my password into a form on some website in clear text over the internet registered to domains by proxy - the proprietor obviously wants to remain anonymous, and while I applaud that, I don't like not knowing anything about the proprietor of a web site where you VOLUNTARILY give it a password.

    Just my 2 cents...

    Registrant:
    Domains by Proxy, Inc.

    Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com)
    Domain Name: PASSWORDMETER.COM

    Domain servers in listed order:
    NS1.DREAMHOST.COM
    NS2.DREAMHOST.COM
    NS3.DREAMHOST.COM

For complete domain details go to:
    http://who.godaddy.com/whoischeck.aspx?Domain=PASSWORDMETER.COM

Well.. to think this out.. what could the proprietor of the site do with thousands and thousands of random and 'tested only' passwords , how would he know the difference , especially since he couldn't know their application , or what program they were for.??

    As i said , it's a tool (imho) can't hurt , might help.

  12. Windows XP to live until 2010... on the Eee

    Posted Apr 3rd 2008 4:52PM

    by Nilay Patel

We puzzled over Microsoft's cryptic statements at CeBIT that the Eee's "other requirements" would lead to an adjustment of the Windows 7 timeline, and it looks like our first guess was spot-on: Microsoft will be making Windows XP available for Eee-class ultraportables until 2010, and possibly later.

Demand for XP on devices like the Eee and Intel's Classmate machines has prompted MS to reconsider axing XP entirely this June: the company will now sell XP Home through at least June 2010, and for one year after the release of Windows 7 -- which means sales of XP could stretch into 2012.

There's no word on if the build of XP Home targeted at the ultraportable laptop set will be different from regular XP builds, but we doubt there'll be many changes -- it'll be awfully sad if people are still clamoring for XP more than a decade after its initial release, though.

  13. Intel unveils tiny chips tailored for mobile Internet gadgets

    Apr 2 03:42 PM US/Eastern

The world's biggest computer chip maker Intel unveiled on Wednesday a set of tiny "Atom" processors it says will give mobile devices desktop computing power.

Energy-sipping Atom chips coupled with graphics technology will be built into sleek "smart phones" and other "mobile Internet devices" (MIDs) that fit in people's pockets, according to the US company.

Atom processing combined with innovation from device manufacturers and software makers "will change the way consumers will come to know and access" the Web," Intel promised.

"Today is a historic day for Intel and the high-tech industry," Intel senior vice president Anand Chandrasekher said in a written release.

"These forthcoming MIDs, and some incredible longer-term plans our customers are sharing with us, will show how small devices can deliver a big Internet experience."

Atom chips with speeds as fast as 1.86 GHz enable quick downloading of Internet pages and playing of rich video and audio files, according to Intel.

Intel's five new chips are described as energy misers, drawing less than three watts of electricity while they work.

The processors should foster "a new class of next-generation" Internet-based portable video players and navigation devices, Intel predicts.

Gadgets embedded with Atom chips will be on the market by August, according to Intel.

  14. Hmmm... Cause for thought.

But the old adage 'too many cooks will spoil the pot' might apply.

When I first joined this site, I too was overwhelmed by the amount and various styles of update projects.

Maybe a 'sticky' overview (tutorial) explaining the differences and nuances of each, would be in order.

Also, there are some compatibility problems when using more than one project on the same machine that should be articulated too.

  15. Password Strength Checker

    http://www.passwordmeter.com/

A great and useful tool, especially for determining new passwords strength

    I suggest bookmark you it

    From the site:

This application is designed to assess the strength of password strings.

The instantaneous visual feedback provides the user a means to improve the strength of their passwords, with a hard focus on breaking the typical bad habits of faulty password formulation.

Since no official weighting system exists, we created our own formulas to assess the overall strength of a given password. Please note, that this application does not utilize the typical "days-to-crack" approach for strength determination.

We have found that particular system to be severely lacking and unreliable for real-world scenarios.

This application is neither perfect nor foolproof, and should only be utilized as a loose guide in determining methods for improving the password creation process.

  16. Creative Labs receives some serious community bashing

Things are heating up over at the Creative forum where Creative Labs have issued a statement that forbids the user Daniel_K of providing X-FI sound card drivers for Windows Vista that fixed several issues and provided Vista users with the same functionality that Windows XP users were enjoying.

Daniel_K was also told to stop distributing drivers for sound cards that would enable features that were not intended for them. The community outcry is huge. The thread was started yesterday and it reached page 26 with most forum users vowing to never buy a Creative product again siding exclusively with Daniel_K.

I think the main point that is making it extremely frustrating for most users is the fact that one guy was able to fix driver issues while the Creative driver developer team failed. A smart move if you ask me would be to hire that guy right of the forum unless there is a reason why the development took that long.

The drivers are already spreading on various torrent websites and it seems that this is going to be a public relations nightmare for Creative.
