However I think you might be on to something..I didn't mention that I changed my monitor about a month ago. My old Compaq 17" went bye bye ( tried it in a different computer 0) so I an using another 17" MGC monitor. H770 (generic)
Do you think it could have a bearing on the problem? I never realized that it might.
suggest how to disable? i think go into device mangler
and disable in this profile VGA and do what you suggested?is that the way? advise - Mikey

Rainy Shadow - mentioned the MsgSrv32 problem about 1/2 way through this mess of a post.
I also mentioned it to submix who noted it.
He had me use the registry delete /refind method (Tthiy's trick)
When I did that on the first re-boot , it MSG.. appeared (again) near the end - I closed and rebooted..it ..finished and returned to it's 'normal' state with everything, but the sound working.
I don't know hardly anything about DOS - so I don't know where to find the drivers
and how to change them - sorry
What info can I post (in a codebox) so you can view the PCI slots and if there is expansion. ??

Hey RS, the problem is that most of the IRQs say they can't be changed.OK, in summary:Try to change the IRQ using any additional programs included with the drivers for the sound and network card.
Try to move the cards to other PCI slots.
Don't bother with the BIOS setup, since it affects all these devices at once.

Also , in checking every one of them, there seems to be no conflicts listed.
I am focusing on the MSGSRV32 - thats where the problem seems to stem from
apparently there is a Micro$oft patch - Q245583 but you have to 'ask' them for it,
and it's no longer available from their site
any ideas or experience with solving MSGSRV32 problems??..or am I heading in the wrong direction?

Did you disable your Parallel (printer) port in the BIOS? And when you did, you still don’t get the IRQ 7 back for PCI?port 5 seems to be overcrowded (the problem) but how to change this??

@RS - I guess I missed your prior sage advice. I will go back and review.
Still having sound driver/ port/printer problems. All the other 'startup problems' are gone. I'm sure it's just a few minor tweaks, but I'm not sure what to do, and I don't want to f**k things up, more than I have.
edit1) in BIOS parallel port settings 4 choices > Compatible>EPP>ECP>Bi-Directional (default is ECP)
what (if any) change should I do?

edit3) the Soundcard.. the Network card & SMBus controller ... all stay on the same port and cannot be seperated, although they can be moved (together) the BIOS gives me 3/5/11 as only options
I think that finding a way to unlink them might solve the problem(s) anyone know how to do that / guide me??

A bit to late maybe, but I would start to set your BIOS right.
Do you still use your Serial and parallel ports? Can you disable the MPU-401 on your soundcard (jumper) or in your driver when you start up?

Are there any specific patches or service paks that address startup /hanging issues with 98se.??
I have an early Pent 4 running 98se. I have intermittent problem with the computer hanging half way to start.
Lately it's become more pronounced. I then reboot in safe mode,then do a complete scandisk and defrag.
The problem seems to go away (for awhile or...day/month/week).
I always defrag usually daily before shut down and scandisk at least once a week.
I run various anti-virus and anti-spyware programs as well.
I am behind a password protected router.
Any suggestions or comments would be welcome.

Hi there, you've had lots of replies to this, which is good, but as you can see, i'm replying to your first post, because i'm not happy with the course of the help you've received. One of the likely scenarios to answer the question: "what is wrong with my machine" is that you have a "very damaged windows" (which is one of the replies you got) but this was never followed up. You've tested the hardware, and if all the results are clean and the computer is not behaving as intended, you have a Screwed Operating System that Needs Re-Installing. In my experience, you can waste WEEKS of your life trying to fix a problem that can be solved in less than one hour. And that is re-installing the OS. It only takes one incompatible system event to crash Windows 98 or make it behave in an excruciating manner.
So, please, more info on the state of the OS ... how old is it? When was it installed? How much change has it seen? Ie how many programs have been installed and uninstalled (a few, many?) -- but we only need this if you have a good reason why you'd prefer to not to re-install.
As you are probably painfully aware, a week is far too long to be trying to fix Windows. Get good at re-installing the OS and you will live longer due to less stress.
Thanks for the sage advice! In my case, I have no program disk, so it's either buy 89se or upgrade to another OS. Otherwise I would have F DISK long ago.
Also , it started up as (I thought) a small problem, and as things went on it kinda took on a life iof its own
Feel free to read through all this mess and contribute any other thoughts , If you wish.

Submix is working on the Aida32 report as we speak.

I have installed the upgrade drive ..773? in the past with no problems
but now it doesn't make a difference towards solving this.
I'm on DSL Ethernet LAN
The machine came with a modem which was used for about the first 6 months... it was a POS from PacBell
it's possible the modem needs to be there now?
There is an upgrade (diamond) modem driver on the Compaq 7585 page .
Mikey edit: it seems the system doesn't recognize the sound card , or that it's even there.

Thx submix.. Yeah, I've been to both sites, to no avail.
I done clean re-installs.
I tried Add-Hardware (let windows find driver)
I've deleted thru Device Manager then let it re-install.
I tried Multimedia through Settings>Control Panel.
The proper control screen (imho) shows up, but it' 'greyed out'.
Same with Volume controls.
It says No Sound Device enabled, yet there seems to be no conflicts,
Device manager says: working correctly.
Like I said (above) during boot - it says "please Enable ESS Alegro, Game and Wdm through WIndows Applet - WTF?
Is it a port issue? since it appears that my network card and Allegro are on the same port 5??
I fixed all the other conflicts, so it's down to this.
Any other suggestions?

Can I change the ports to a specific range or number, and if, which & what??
I would prefer to do it manually, but Tiny's creation seem worth a try , if i can't figure it out.
But, I'm going to wait, until you or submix give me some confirmation on this..
Any ideas on the other minor issues i raised , (above) ??

No wonder you're not getting any sound. IRQ 5 is being claimed by Intel SMBus Controller, you Ethernet card, and your sound card all at once.
I'd recommend leaving the sound card at IRQ 5 for DOS compatibility, and moving the network card to a free IRQ.
Enlighten me, how to fix the problem - I haven't done it before?

motherboard resources still yellow , I can 'turn it off' by checking the 'not in this profile' box
during start up SOMETIMES is has a line : 'This computer requires windows', but it boots past it with no prob.
If I try to START>RUN> SCANDISK, it opens a DOS screen(on top of Windows) and locks up the system.
I can access scandisk from PROPERTIES>TOOL> FILECHECKER - just fine.
When pressed the, MyComputer icon still freezes the system. I can get around it, by going through My Pictures or my Documents - and go up folder levels.

I did a clean re-install of my media player (dbPOWERamp) ,and ESS audio (from the Compaq site) but neither made a difference.

ok...whew. We are mostly out of the woods. The startup problem appears to be gone.
I deleted / and had windows re-install all the drivers. - per instruction, and it went mostly as you explained it would.
BUT:
Some yellow exclamation points !!!! - in device manager
1)Direct memory Controller - now there is 2 (identical)listed. 1 good... & 1 yellow checked -how do I delete bad one from coming back,??
2)The 82801aa ultra ata controller (and primary / secondary) all have yellow !
however in sleuthing on the Intel site, I learned that these have been replaced with an Application Accelerator (which I already installed a while ago. (conflict?) and how do I delete 82801aa entries , to keep it from coming back?
3)Motherboard Resources - Yellow ! tried a couple of times delete/let windows find driver , and it keeps coming back ---> !! Tried updating driver to no avail. hmmm??
Under Performance tab in PROPERTIES:
All drives are shown..using DOS compatibility mode...??

Yes, the 'forcedmode" box is still checked in msconfig > advanced
I'm on a LAN ethernet USB w/ router
Yes, the mscongfig stuff was 'reset' per instruction
other than that..
we're close, but it still locks up sometimes going into Windows functions. - when normally booted. Maybe the above items solved, will end this prob.

ok, followed your instructions exactly, submix.
1) swapfile is now reporting correctly
2) the 'startup' freeze appears to be gone...it hesitates, and stalls, at the freeze point, for about 30 seconds , then finishes booting. I think that part of the problem is solved.
3) Now that it boots up normally - a problem still remains, that if I click on My Computer or other windows file,(like- My Documents) ,the computer locks up. the mouse can move , but can't click on anything.
Only a hard reboot will unlock it.
Then it restarts ...goes through scandisk..the boots in safe mode.
Once safe bootedup ,I exit/restart, and then it seems to boots up normally.
Both Config.sys and Autoexec are empty, and the lines on system.ini are deleted per instruction exactly.. Now each has a .txt file (backup, i assume)
Several of you have spent too much time on this matter.
If i had realized that it was a complicated problem, things would have been handled differently (more forthcoming with specs)...etc)
If, after all this, submix, ...or someone/anyone wants to finish up solving this, it would be appreciated.

OK, I apologize - for the snafus.
I thought I had xxxx out the key code,apparently I missed 1 place.
As for the 'codebox' looong post. I followed instructions, but it didn't seem to work the second time in the post. Someone joked, that I triggered a bug - gecko in the software.
I haven't downloaded any patches or tricks etc ,in days.
I look back and see that I have been taking instructions for more than 1 person.
I put ; in front of the lines, which I understood would negate the line without removing it altogether.
Maybe I misunderstood.
You are right, as to my configsys fetish - From now on , I will make all changes, that you instruct, from the windows files.
You have been more than patient with me, and I appreciate all your time spent.
I have printed out the last few pages of this post and will now begin to implement.

Hey RS..where to start... no I don't play DOS games or any other for that matter.
I didn't 'force' the MSG.. to close , it forced ME to close and stop the drivers installation. as i said , upon reboot it seemed to complete to 'normal ' (meaning everything working , except the sound)
I have extra PCI slots in my computer .
can only choose 3/5/11/ in BIOS
I have the D-link CD that came with the network card.
The rest of what you are saying is over my head. Honestly, I'm just not smart enough yet to grasp what you are trying to tell me what to do, and i don't want to f**k things up.
