  1. spacesurfer, It would be easier just to take the files off the disk and replace one file then having to go digging up all the dos drivers I need and recreating a new boot disk. I am gonna see if this ultraiso thing works. I dont know if it will, because I did a smilar thing with Alcohol 120 and had no luck.
  2. I have a ghost boot cd that someone made and I want to see the files that are on this disk. The person no longer works for my company and deleted the files after making the boot disk. Is there anyway I can view them? I need to see these files because there was a special way that the disk was made and fies that where used to create it. I can not create another one via ghost wizard, so please do not sugguest that.
  3. I have been giving family and freinds help with there computers and networks for sometime now (past 5 years). I dont ever charge them. Just reacently family friends of ours passed me on to some of their family members...no prob. I worked on ther computer for a few hours (virus adware/spyware and window updates). I didnt charge them even though they wanted to give me $$. I told the no prob, Merry X-mas. Now the person I just help out just passed me along to another family member and I am starting to see a patern develope here. My question is what do I charge for my time? Do I charge by the hour or the type of work I do. I dont know even if I want this patern to continue. Granted most peoples pc probs are usually some virsus or spyware issue that can be fixed in a decent amount of time. I just dont want to be someones techie that calls me anytime they have an issue with their comp. I just wanted to find out if any of you do any consulting with home users and what you charge. Also any tips you may have for me as I walk into the home tech support realm. dimegrind
  4. I need to reformat my hd and I want to back up my Outlook files. What do I need to do for this? Does outlook have a Back up feature?
  5. I am the only account on my pc running XP Home. When I use to turn on my computer it would take me right to my desktop. Now it takes me to the login screen with the icon button that I have to hit for it to boot to my desktop. This just started happening and I dont know why. I liked it the way it use to be. Is there anyway I can just have the computer boot to the desktop again and bypass the login screen? I do not have my account password protected incase you are wondering. Thanks
  6. here is a perfect example. The links next to "By Brand" I can click them all, but when I click on the "more" link I get nothing. I go to the same page in firefox and it works. I think it is because of the javascript code....not sure though.
  7. In a nut shell some links work others dont and I dont know why.
  8. I am running XP pro sp2 w/the latest updates. For some reason or another some links do not work in IE. I think it is just links that are generated from code, because other links from the same site will work. For instance Microsoft's site the home link in the top right above the search bar didn't work but other links did. I downloaded fire fox and went to the sites i had trouble with and had no probs. I ran adaware, spybot, Norton anti-virus and found nothing. So I have eliminated spyware/viruses from being the cause. I even went to Microsoft and got the latest IE updates for sp2. I set the security opens to default as well as low to see if that would help, but nothing. Any ideas. I know i can continue to use firefox, but I want IE to work. I hate things that don't work on my computer, if i use them or not or there is another program i can use.
  9. But can you buy a bootable HDD? or you just buy a regular external and install an OS?
  10. Its it possible to buy a Bootable External HDD? Or do you have to buy software to make your own?
  11. Got it working!!!!! I uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP....works fine so far
  12. Still nothing. I switched ports, I have uninstalled both nics and reinstalled one at a time and test each solo. It doesn't seem to be the router and I cant see it being the cable (as far as dchp is concerned) because I can get there (router) with a static ip. Is there any chance it would be my mobo? I dont think dhcp has anything to do with my mobo though.
  13. If you are running a domain network you can, through active directory and GPO's.
  14. Worst comes to worst is you dont have a spearate OS on the d partion you can back it up and then delete it and recreate it.
  15. I have a few win2k machines on my network as well as XP. There are 2 user accounts, both have admin permissions. My question is, can you access one machine from another without entering in the others username and password everytime? What I am asking is can I store the username and password somewhere so that everytime I access the other machine (with a different user account) I wont be promted to enter the username and password everytime?
  16. I can communicate between 2 w2k machines and netbios is not enabled.
  17. No firewalls and I am not running SP2.
  18. I have a small home network running both win2k and XP. I am mainly on the 2k machine, and the other day I tried to get on to my XP via the network by using \\computername\c$ and was unable to get to the hdd. I got a "network name can not be found." Does Xp not allow you to do that?
  19. Set to automatic Bledd I already have 2 nic a netgear, which is the one im using and a on board lan which gives me the same probs. With the static Spidy I can access everything I need, but every so often I lose connection to the network (my computer only) for no reason.
  20. Yeah I did that, and that didnt work.
  21. I have no other network to plug into. This is a small office network, so it is no different then a home network, DHCP comes from the router and all the other computers on the network receive an ip addy. I have reset the router many many many times in the last six months, and since the other computer do receive a dynamic ip I dont think the router is to blame. I think my prob is a hardware issue on my machine. Any ideas.
  22. I can only get a network conection through a static ip and no a dynamic ip. I have an onboard land as well as netgear nic card and neither take a dynamic ip. Not only that but every so often I lose my network connection. My computer is the only one on the network that will lose the connection as well. What is the deal with that?
  23. Hey guys, I have any interview today and I was wondering if you could help me out. I know that I will be tested on my IT knowledge, can you supply me with some questions (along with the answers(don't have time to research)) that I should be expecting. Thanks
  24. I am running WinXP Pro, which I just install a week ago. I played music for the first time and its all crackily. Its not the speakers tried them on another comp. I have a had pro on this machine before but I switch back to 2k where I had no sound probs, but now im back with xp pro and probs. The sound probs did occur when I had pro on the machine before. I am not sure what the prob is. I went to the site of my sound card and they do not offer a driver for XP. I went into decive manager and all is good. So what is the deal. My sc is a Montego II
