This may sound a bit dumb but.... how would that sound card be useful without a 3.5mm jack?

Ok, I have horrible luck with integrated sound, and I want to have a sound card. Of course, I hear the horror stories about Creative's sound cards. I heard about Daniel_K and his custom drivers for Audigy cards. I also know that those cards are not sold anymore.
So, I have a couple tough decisions to make:
1) I want to avoid Creative, but all the other cards seems too pricey. The price range I'm looking at is $50-$100. I can deal with lower, but I know you get what you pay for!
2) I don't want something that is software emulated, which is another reason I want to avoid Creative, with their deceptive naming scheme. Of course, I'm not even sure if that's possible anymore, since I recently switched to Vista (or possibly 7 soon).
3) I have both PCI and PCI-e x1, but I've heard bad things about PCI-e sound cards... is any of that true?
Integrated isn't an option. I always have compatibility issues, plus it's kinda creepy actually. There static coming through my speakers from my sound card, and it sounds like somebody running down a rainy street. A little unsettling at times. Hahahaha...
Any help is very appreciated!
(Oh, and I did a forum search already, and while there are some great posts out there, they didn't really help)

I was just trying to patch up old NT4, and I can't seem to get Service Pack 6a High Encryption from Microsoft's download site. It just redirects to an error, saying the page no longer exists. I was able to get standard 6a not from Microsoft, but from a direct link to Microsoft on a 3rd party site, but that doesn't help.
I did a search on the forum, and nobody has mentioned it previously.

Are you booting off of the CD or are you booting off of a floppy disk image?
Floppy disk images shouldn't even know what type of CD it is. I'd link you to a website with working 98SE floppy boot disks, but I'm not sure if that's against the rules. Better safe than sorry.

Well, I may have confused some. It's not the program's icon I hate, it's the file type's icon I hate. They all turned into geckos.
I know how to easily change a desktop shortcut's icon... but changing a file type's icon? beyond me.

Well, I went with Irfanview.
All the others either didn't install, gave a DLL error, or best of all, gave me registry corruption.
Didn't try the last 2 mentioned after I posted... and I don't think I will. I'm content with Irfanview, though I wish it's icon wasn't so ugly.

I'm wondering if there is a program for 98SE that mimics XP's Image and Fax viewer.
Nothing special, I just want to double click a picture and be able to scroll through photos without the hassle of going back to explorer and finding the next picture. I've read about some kind of KODAK program that comes with 98, and I found some program called Imaging, but it does next to nothing, and getting it to associate with photo formats will be a long, manual process. I also did a search of the 9x and special project sections of this forum, with no luck.
I know there must be something I'm missing.

Mine's a PCI card. My motherboard does have an AGP slot, but it's a proprietary form factor, so I can't fit anything but a Rage 128 into it.
As for modding the drivers.... I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Like replacing files provided with updated versions or something?

Unlike 6 series and 7series, X1K series and X800/X850 series are totally different, so there is no reason for ATI to develop Win9x compatible driver.
Seems strange that they would release 6.2 drivers for 9x and not add cards that the drivers premiered with.

I just installed UberSkin on my system. I think it's great, but whenever I switch to a skin it cuts my Quick Launch icons in half. Everything else is normal . . . but the bottom half of Quick Launch disappears. Any thoughts here? I did a search but couldn't find anything on the issue. . .
I too found that problematic. Truth be told, I just disabled my quicklaunch, even though I use it often.

Forgive me for asking a dumb question i guess, but with those generic drives, are you saying i could buy say the X1550 , put the card in my tower and when it ask for drivers, just install the generic drivers and it will work just like that?
I'm thinking it should work just like that.... except you get no 3D acceleration like Direct3D or OpenGL.
As for buying an X1550... I'd advice against it. Right now I can't get the X1300 running on 9x's 6.2, so I'm positive the X1550 won't work.

I'm trying to remember if K-Meleon works on 98. It is the lowest resource modern browser I can recall.

Wait a min if the 6.2 drivers work with the X1300 or X1550, couldn't you just the win9x 6.2 drivers, they exist.
Nope, the 6.2 drivers for 2000/XP and 9x are not identical. X1300's are in NT5's 6.2, but absent from 9x's 6.2. As I stated before.

I've searched left and right on this forum for the last ATI drivers available for 98SE, and I keep coming up with Catalyst 6.2.
Upon checking the 98 hardware compatibility list, I don't see the X1300 listed on the first page, yet someone later on in that thread claims that an x1300 can be used on 98.
I see that 6.2 officially supports an X1300 on Windows NT5, but nowhere in 9x's Catalyst 6.2 can an X1300 be found. Figuring I could modify the Catalyst files to include X1300... So I try my hand at it and botch the drivers completely.
I suppose I could use generic drivers for it, but the whole reason of me using this card is for 3D acceleration.
Is it, or is it not, unofficially supported?

I have all devices that are connected set to static IPs in 192.168.1.0XX (it helps with gaming). The router is set to automatically assign IPs above 192.168.1.100. I did not set the IP on the 98 machine to a static IP... and unfortunately I will not be able to check it either, for I have reformatted it again. This time, just for giggles, I installed ME. Oddly enough, ME is working!
EDIT: I realized my post may not be clear... I now have Windows ME on the computer, and it is able to connect to the network and the internet.
Double EDIT: Oh, I may add... I really don't want to have WinME on the computer. Windows 98 has so many wonderful projects that I just can't pass them up.

Reformatted again, installed Win98 with all default settings... nothing removed.
...Yet it still won't connnect. This is making me think that either the mobo is finally going, or the adapter is dead (though why would it connect if it was dead?).

Well, a few days ago I booted my old 98SE machine up. I just purchased a KVM switch, so I was going to hook it up and play around. It booted fine, no errors... but couldn't get online. It couldn't see the wireless at all. Figuring I did something stupid long ago, I reinstalled 98SE. After the install, I put in my backup zip disk, install drivers from all the saved driver EXEs, and it can see everything again. I restart a few times after installing video drivers, and it once again can't see the wireless network. I ended up botching the NIC driver install, so I format and start clean again. This time, I install the motherboard INFs first, and only the wireless. Now it can see and connect to the wireless........ but it still cannot access the internet like every other device on the network. I've never had trouble from this computer before.
I upgraded to IE6 SP1, the USB network device has it's drivers installed correctly... yet nothing.
I've used the wireless device on other computers, so I know that's good. I've used this computer countless times, so I suppose it could be hardware failure, but... I feel as though I'm missing something. Is there a setting that I'm just not getting? I customized the 98 install a little, unchecking stuff like Outlook Express and MSN, AT&T and AOL install. So I'm wondering if I removed something needed.
I have a small wireless network on a Linksys WRT54G, unmodded. It's WEP encrypted, not WPA, because of DSes and a Wii. I know my hex key by heart, so I know I'm not getting that wrong. It only has 10 devices on it total.
Any clues?

Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro 128MB- Purchased 2004, died 2006.... a month after the warranty expired.
Just one day it would not let the computer pass BIOS. Not even so much as a beep code.
Had to replace it with a FX series 5900XT... still sad about that. I have it's corpse still, hoping someday I can revive it with a ROM flash or something.
I still use the 5900XT too...... sheesh, I need a new PC.

Ok, I've installed Windows 98 and SE many times now, yet there is one thing I can never figure out.
I know you can copy the Win98 folder on the CD to the HDD, and direct the "insert disk" prompt to that HDD folder instead of inserting the CD... but is there a way to make it so windows automatically goes to that folder and doesn't prompt to insert the CD?
On some installs I've done, there is a PREINSTALL folder that you can copy Win98 to... others, there is an I386 folder that does the same... but sometimes there is neither.
Of course, I may be confusing some things, but hopefully someone gets what I'm saying.

Discrete sound card

I guess I technically never said I would be hooking standard PC speakers to it. I just thought that would be assumed... anyhow, that sound card wouldn't work, unfortunately. Not only it is expensive in it's base form, but I would need an adapter as bonestonne said, further distancing the setup from my original budget.
I suppose sound cards really are a dead end. I just want something cheap, that won't burden my processor, and is stable with no static and crackling...
