  1. Hi, thanks for ur tip. I just edited my Q, because i only mentioned in the topic, that i am searching for a WLAN-USB-Stick, not a normal USB-Flash-Stick. Sorry, Bjoern
  2. Hi, i managed to have my other USB-Hardware to work under DOS. Now i am looking for an _WLAN_ USB-Stick with DOS-Support. Has any Vendor sold such a piece? Thanks, B.Poller edited on 2009-01-14: _WLAN_ USB-Stick instead of USB-Stick
  3. Hi there, i wanna build my own Win2k Proffessional NAS-System. For the special usage, i wanna 1) make the os as small as possible 2) make it "embedded", so it is a save way to use a CF-Card as "Harddisk" Therefor any tips to limit write-access or possible unneeded files or directories would be perfect. Does anyone know some websites for that topic? I would prefer Win2k Pro as OS, because i have a licece free here. Thanks, B.Poller
  4. Closed because Project now takes Win2k as OS ________________________________________________________ Hi, as part of my two Win98 Projects (WinThin98, WinP2P98) i am thinkin of making a specialised NAS "Distrbution" (LOL) with WLAN connection. I will use a small Win98SE version (98lite micro install, no IE, ~65-80 MB, if the micro install dont kill any network tools) on CF-2-IDE or Disk-On-Module. CPU-Speed ~233 MHz Geode RAM could be up to 256/512 MB Data Storage on USB 2.0 Stick or HDD TightVNC for remote control But i am not sure what tools are already outthere, which i can use to make a better NAS instead of simple Win Network Sharing. Any tips? Thanks, B.Poller
  5. Ok, thanks to all of u. I will try that incl. BIOS (NO halt on any error). Perfect forum, B.Poller
  6. Hi, i wanna encrypt one of my Harddisks (or an USB Stick) on the fly. The OS would be Win98SE. Is there an up2date software out there? Thanx, B.Poller
  7. Hi, before i install and try, maybe one of ur guys already done this. I wanna use a Win98 PC as a kind of server in my home-network. Because i wanna control this PC via TightVNC remotly, i plan this PC to be monitor-, keyboard- and mice-less after installation. Q 1: Anyone know Problems with Win98 and no monitor, no keyb. and no mice (accept from not being really "useable" LOL) Q 2: Anyone know if i am able to use keyboard and mice if connected remotly to this PC (remember it has no devices, so the drivers havent been loaded)? Q 3: If i have to install keyb. and mice, are there device-dummies outthere? I mean, KVM switches do emulate connected devices, are there such mini-adapters directly for PS/2 or USB sold outthere in the world? Thanks, B.Poller
  8. Thanks guys, seems that i give opera a try. IE is deleted from my Win98 then. Cause i want to convert old ThinClients (mostly 300 MHz Geode CPU) to WLAN Win98 ThinWin's, CPU Speed and sometimes RAM is limited (not all accept 256 MB Modules), I think FireFox really need to be configured for that environment. Will try that later sometimes. Extra Thanks: Off-by-One Tip I need Flash support for that ThinWin's but for other projects or really limited Ex-ThinClients, thanks for that browser. I never heard of it before and that one is REALLY small. Bye, B.Poller
  9. I think i have read abou some ThinClients, which would use their own local browser fpr surfing the web. True? Do they have more colors (Hi-Color config on thinclient) then, even when using the NT TS having only 256? Thanx, B.Poller
  10. Hi, i am working on my german Win98-ThinWin Project. Getting my Win98SE down to 60-80 MB with all updates and Tools, i am asking myself, which browser would run fastest with less ressources needed. IE is good too. Security is not my priority, cause system would be stored on write-protected CF-FlashCard and loaded to RAM every boot. Candidates: - IE 6.0SP1 (cause their are execellent fellows out their, getting us all the updates we need) - latest FireFox - latest Opera Is their any comparison / test out their in the web not older then 2006, where these browsers where tested under Win98SE ? At the end, a XP-comparison would give me that info too. I am interested in: - System slowdown / CPU needed - RAM usage - Space neede for full install (i could measure that myself, but its not a must ;-)=) So, the low CPU-usage, minimu-Ram-usage and tiny install-space needed browser would be my perfect choice. Any tips? Thanx, B.Poller
  11. Hi, i planned to install a Win NT 4.0 Terminal-Server at home, so my kids could surf via ThinClients and let me save some money (less power consumtion). Now i saw a board message somewhere else that told me, that NT4.0 TS AND Win2k Server only use 256 Colors for clients. Is that true? How is it, if the clients have their own browser, could they use more colors? Cant believe, that i only can use 256 Colors with this professional ThinClients. Most companies use the internet, but i cant believe they only have 256 colors.... Please help me. Thanx and a happy New Year, Bjoern
  12. Hi, i am searching for an update pack for Win98 FE (GERMAN). I am not sure, if ur Pack will work with the FE-Version. Does it? Thanks & Danke, Bjoern
  13. Hi, i got my NT 4.0 Terminal Server (english) Edition. I already have the SP6 and the PostSP6-Update Rollup, but there are almost 30 Security-Updates/Hotfixes which came out later. I didn´t found any unofficial UpdatePacks. It could be, that the Terminal Server Edition is to rare. So does anyone have or know an UpdatePack for NT 4.0 Terminal Server english ? If there is no UpdatePack: How can i pack the Updates together myself or make them not reboot everytime, but only have ONE little final Reboot ? Btw: I would like to install IE 6.0 SP 1 for the RDP-clients. Any chance to find an unoffical UpdateService for NT 4.0 Version (like for Win98) to keep it save? Many questions, but would be nice if someone has a solution . I would like to use the Server for private at home and change the PCs of my kids (only surfin and chatin) with ThinClients to save energy costs. Thx , Bjoern
  14. Question closed: ----------------- Because there is no NT 4.0 NetworkCard Driver for the build in NetCard, i stopped trying to install NT 4.0 Terminal Server. Thx for all ur help, i will use the infos on the PC i will try next. Bjoern ************************************************************* Hi, i have a Compaq IPAQ Legacy-Less PC with only USB (no PS2, serial, parallel). I connected a PS2-Keyboard and Logitech PS2 Standard Mouse via an USB-to-PS/2-Adapter I installed Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server (english) with SP6 and Post SP RollUp. The keyboard worked perfectly with the adapter, but i had no mouse support. I tried some USB drivers, but the first dell driver showed errors and the second dell driver freezed my keyboard. Before continueing trying, it would be perfect, if someone could name me a working driver for my Logitech Mouse. I didnt understand, which of all the drivers would be correct for mouse support. I dont need mass storage support, so just the a plain mouse/keyboard USB driver would be perfect. Thx for ur help, Bjoern
  15. Hi, i installed the MS Remote Desktop V6 on my Win98. Login to my Win NT Terminal Server works great. But i want to login automaticly with the Remote Desktop in the Autostart Menu using this Win98 as ThinClient. 1) I faced the problem, that i couldnt save my password. 2) Secondly i didnt find a checkbox for automatic login. Anyone a tip for solving my probs? Thx, Bjoern
  16. Yesterday i tried out my "new" Win NT 4.0 Terminal Server (English Version) on MS Virtual PC 2007. Facing no problems so far, i wanted to try a thin client. I looked for some free/open source software. But i found that the Linux based clients were to difficult to install (for just testing) and finally i wanted to have a WLAN-ThinClient. So i went to a friend with a 98lite prof licence (we used a german Win98SE, so i could not use winimize or the other free tools). We prepared a Win98SE install on Virtual PC 2007: * Win98SE german 98lite 4.7 Prof. SLEEK install (with some Win95 files, e.g. Shell) * disabled everything except audio/video compression and audio support * we got a Win98SE with no IE (size of WinDir ~60 MB) * i installed German inoffical ServicePack 2.1d (now about 86 MB) * i deleted the mdm*.* files of the /[windir]/inf directory (~80 MB) * i installed the MS RDP Client V6 * i disabled the waste box, pagefile While using Virtual PC 2007, i couldnt install a WLAN-Card. But it should not be a prob for a real system. The system worked perfectly (with 80MB in size). I could easily login to my WinNT4 Terminal Server and use the IE 6.0 SP1 remotly. Now i want to set this "Fat" Thin Client on diet. I only need the REMOTE DESKTOP and maybe some Printer support (as far there are drivers, after seeing HP "deleting" their Win98 drivers from homepage). ******************* I am askin me, if anyone of u know such a project already, because that would save time by tryin my own or i could use some ideas of such a project. Main target is a slim WinThin OS with WLAN support. Also a website with tips for deleting unneeded Win98-files by hand would be cool. ******************* If anybody know a easy-to-install Linux based ThinOS with WLAN Support, i would happy o hear from that. I would like to the PCs from my kids with some low-power legacy PCs, because they mainly use them only for chatting and youtube. Maybe my NT Server is strong enough for my wife too (playing mostly some web-based games).
  17. Hi, is Copy2GB language "sensitive"? I have a German Win98SE + WinME. Can I use this great Patch/Tool or is it only for the English version? Thx , Bjoern
  18. Hi folks, i have a GERMAN NT 4,0 Terminal Server Version. So far, i have the TS-SP 6 (6a not for TS available) and the PostSP6-Rollup. Does anyone know a Site which lists all Patches and Fixes, that are not included? Best would be with german Patches, but english would be ok too, so i could search for the german ones. Thx, Bjoern
  19. Hi folks, i have a Dell XPS M1710 Notebook with that MediaDirect Button which loads a kind of MediaCenter only OS instead of my XP MCE 2005 SP2 i normally boot. Has anyone of u extracted this "OS" from the hidden / unreadable Partition? Or is there something on my Install CDs i didnt find? I will use Linux on my Laptop, so i wanna use the XP licence on my Media-Mini-PC. This one isnt from Dell, so i hope MediaDirect is no Dell BIOS-Locked software. Thx for help, Bjoern
  20. I just got NT 4.0 Terminal Server at eBay to play with. My kids all use their PCs to surf and chat over DSL (cause newer games dont run on their mashines). I wanna test, if just using Thinclients for them (around 20 EUR / ~28 $) from eBay could save us a lot of power. Those Thinclients use 25W instead of 145W on their Compaq Desktops. So, also i dont know if NT 4.0 TS will be supoorted, i can say: YES, i use NT 4.0 and am interested . Bye, Bjoern
  21. Hi, i am installing a tiny Win98SE on my ThinClient. After that, this Mini-PC gets a WebCam and will be used to view our shop entrance. We could save pics on our server or send streams. Does anyone know a freeware / opensource tool, which can put the pics or streams as background on XP? Target PC would be a XP MCE 2005 SP2. Thanks , Bjoern
  22. Hi folks, i got a cheap NT 4.0 Terminal Server OS. Just wanna try getting my IBM ThinClient a Server to boot from. I know, there is a possibility to use XP, but on my Testing-Mashines, i only use Win98SE and Win2k (no XP licences for that). So i wanna try that Terminal Server OS just for surfing with ThinClients at the moment. I already got those 2 UpdatePacks for TS: SP6 and a PostSP6 from MS. Now i am searching for a website (english or german, maybe dutch) focusing on NT4 TS (hopin i am not the only one). Any tips for that? Thx, Bjoern
  23. Thanks for ur tips. I have used goolge already, but only found tips for getting a pirate site which isnt really free . From ur choices, Freewebs seems to be just what i looked for. 2 thumps up , Bjoern
  24. Buon Giorno jaclaz, grazie mille . I will look at that tool tomorrow, but seems just what i needed. Perfect, thanks for the other tips too. Ciao , Bjöern
  25. Hi there , i just joined this site, because i have started some new own Win98SE-Projects. My project for today is getting my VIA-800MHz ThinClient (with 512MB SDRAM and 4xUSB2.0+2xUSB1.1) a Win98SE on CF Card. I tested a normal Win98SE install with a 2.5" HDD and it worked. Lucky to have a ThinClient with normal AWARD BIOS. But to minimize sound (without HDD, there is NO sound, totally fanless) and the power needed, i wish to put a Win98SE Install on one of my used 512MB CF-2-IDE-Cards. First have to say: I would install all Software needed on a HDD and finally copy the data to the CF Card, cause i know, there are limits in write access (in the 100.000 or millions, depending on the date of manufactoring and type). So there are 2 ways for me: ---------------------------- 1.) If i could stop any write access, it would be possible to use the complete RAM. With that version, i would install a Win98 SE Third Edition XP-Look-alike (incl. unofficial ServicePack, Revolution Pack 7 and self-made german 982ME, and...). As far as i found, there is a complicated way to have ONLY the REGISTRY in a RAMDISK (someone mentioned a english translated article of the german ct magazin with Win98 on CDROM here in the forum). or 2.) I have a selfmade embedded Win98SE on a CF Card which boots itself from a RAMDISK (so it must be smaller, leaving enough memory for the system). I planned a Boot-Menue, so u could boot from CF card to install new software and after reboot, the standard boot option would copy that install into RAM-DISK and boot from there. Before i found the Revolution Pack 7 to support german, i preferred that way But also there, i would like to minimize write access and especially caches (cause all is in RAMDISK). I would do the following things so far: Unneccessary Disk Access --------------------------- - Disable PageMapping - Disable Caches of Browsers and other programs - Disable Temp Directories of Browsers - Disable Recycling Bin (waste box or what its called in ur version) Unneccessary Memory Usage ----------------------------- - Test which caches in memory are unnessarry or to big with a RAM-DISK Win98SE Slimfast my Win98SE -------------------------- - First blow it up with all new patches, 982ME, Java - then set it on diet with 98Lite full version (i would buy, cause all Minimize sites i found dont work with german version), i would stay with IE 6SP1 so far, because the german unofficial SP supports actual Patches (July 2007), but could change to opera. TARGETS: ----------- I would like to use that FormerThinClient for surfing, downloading, even as juke-box. It only needs about 24 watt. All files (downloads, music or so) would be saved on USB 2.0 Stick (the faster ones with high write/read access). QUESTION: ======= Any tips for stopping "unneccessary" DiskAccess? Memory Usage? Manually SlimFast Win98SE? Is there a tool, which records all disk access made by the system (i could optimize access before installing on CF card) ? Whats the difference between drvspave and dblspace (because i would compress the RAM-DISK)? Which one is newer or better? THANKS for reading so far and maybe u have a tip or be interested know (a car pc would be almost the same). Stay tuned, Bjoern P.S.: Anyone german, austrian, german-talking swiss there? Some tools are needed in the german version. Maybe we could share our experiences.
