KernelEx 4.0 Final 2 testing
All works okay so far.
Windows actually starts up faster to the desktop and general Windows operation is faster.
I expect this is partly as a result of the KernelEx DLL delayed loading.
I played YoFrankie using the Blender Game Engine for a while and went through my normal apps.
New app working:

Prior to KernelEx 4.0 Final 2, Scribus would fail to finish loading with an error.
Currently, there is an invalid page fault in MSCTF.DLL (Microsoft Text Services) during Scribus startup (non-fatal).
And also when it closes, it has a number of application errors (at least four for me):
- invalid page fault in QT-MT3.DLL
- invalid page fault in <unknown> (sometimes QT-MT3.DLL)
- invalid page fault in <unknown> (sometimes QT-MT3.DLL)
- invalid page fault in <unknown>
I have not done any real testing in Scribus since I've only just got it to actually load to the GUI...
Requires GhostScript 8.6x or newer (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ghostscript/) and GDI+.
According to the Scribus Software Requirements:
Windows 98 and ME are not supported at all as there are many functions in Scribus which depend on features available only on Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

This development version is actually more stable (and much faster) on 9x/KEx than 1.3.3.13 (stable
*irony*).GSWIN32C windows pop up briefly during Scribus startup and occasionally when certain tasks are performed.
For example, selecting Help, About Scribus, pops up a GSWIN32C window for a moment.
When closing, it has an invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL, sometimes followed with an invalid page fault in MSVCR80.DLL (Visual Studio 2005).
The first time a new install of Scribus is run, it builds a font cache (slow).
In 1.3.3.x, it did this everytime
(probably a Windows 9x issue)However, in 1.3.5.1, it only does it the first time and then just checks for any changed fonts thereafter.
Both versions appear usable in Windows 9x with KernelEx 4.0 Final 2

No, I've had the same problem installing Java 6 update 15.
I can get it to install using the same workaround I used for Java 6 update 14.
...Blender 2.48a is working with KernelEx - for all those 3D rendering and animation buffs out there!Blender requires Python 2.5.x which is 9x compatible anyway.
It also requires the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.
When the redist install is run, it will fail, but it has already copied the following files into %windir%\SYSTEM32.
msvcm90.dll
msvcp90.dll
msvcr90.dll
Simply copy these three files into %windir%\SYSTEM.
I've now got the current Blender 2.49a with avifix working with KernelEx 4.0 Final.
Blender 2.49a (and higher) now requires Python 2.6.x which is not supposed to work in Windows 9x.
However, both Blender and Python installed with no drama and Blender is working beautifully!

This is a board problem. It has nothing to do with Firefox.
What do you mean a board problem? I don't have the issue on IE6 on Windows 98 SE, or FF 3.5.2 on Vista x64.
Every two days or so I have to login again to this board on my home computer. It's a known board glitch.Likewise here, I have no problem with IE6 on Windows 98SE. Nothing wrong with the board.

According to this page:
Starting July 2006, Microsoft discontinued the support for Windows 98/ME. As announced some time ago on Product lifecycle information page on www.avira.com, we do not offer new versions and updates for Windows 98/ME virus protection any longer.
I'm guessing that the 'updates' part of their statement means just that...

On one occasion, after several minutes of switching between tabs, the icons, tabs and other smaller graphics became corrupted. Icons on the Desktop were masked against random bits of web page graphics.
On this same occasion, there was noticible sluggishness even when the apps were closed.
However, I have not been able to reproduce this after a restart.
Generally stable. No problems with restarts. Haven't tried a shutdown.
While testing Beta 0 refresh, I've again seen the identical problem above, also in Firefox, although 3.5.2 now.
This time, there was only one tab while listing a large number of files on sourceforge.net.
No apparent issues in Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and other apps.
I have done some shutdowns now, and have once seen a really cool shutdown crash!
With Beta 0 refresh, Windows 98SE seems faster - perhaps my imagination?

Under Win98SE / KernelEx 4 Final I CAN NOT run "Print Peview" - I get error message that printer IS NOT found. If I run "Print" printer IS found, but instead of images and formatted text I get just PLAIN text.

In brief:
- Print Preview command doesn't work at all: "Printer is not found" error message pops up instead.
- Print command works, but the output is Plain text without any formatting, graphics and images.

I agree, Windows Me thumbnailer is not good...
More than a couple of screens of thumbnails and it would tend to crash Explorer.
In comparison, Tihiy's GDI thumbnails ROCK!

The Market Share browser versions trends is showing that IE7 usage has dropped faster than IE6 since May leaving IE6 as the most common browser!?

(but I wouldn't take just one set of stats as final...)This month, Internet Explorer 8 will be released to corporates (via Windows Server Update Services unless blocked), so I would expect IE8 usage to increase somewhat (albeit artificially induced).

And it seems to be working well here as I never experienced the error reported by RetroOS.
Btw I don't need to uncheck the "use new plugin" in the Java control panel to have it to work properly in Opera at least.
I dunno about IE yet because my botched installs and messed-up java registry keys have not been fixed as far as the IE plugin goes. The update 14 installer run from the jdk installer also wrote all the nearly 300 CLSID keys the IE plugin uses to make them point at my manual update 15 installation. I did run a registry search and replace in the classes_root key to correct all those paths but this had the weird result that if I now go with IE on a page that contains an applet, then the only thing that does happen is that two instances of java.exe succesivelly execute from the update 14 directory and pop up briefly on screen, lol.
Yeah, that's exactly what happens in Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Firefox 3.5.1 if you don't disable:
Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in (requires browser restart)
Obviously Opera works without disabling this setting.
It must work with processes differently to the other two browsers...

What settings do you have in compatibility tab for JRE installer?
None. If I set it to Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2, I get the following error:
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.

Also nice test results with a new install. It shows that the only dependancy is KernelEx.
It makes me wonder if perhaps the Error 1723 during install is only on my system...

Today, Adobe released new versions of Flash Player 9 and 10.
9.0.246.0 works perfectly under Opera 10 Beta 2 but I have some problem with Firefox 2.0.0.22 pre and SeaMonkey 1.1.17 (without KernelEx of course).
10.0.32.18 refused to install (complaining about older operating system) despite of registry trick and setting KernelEx 4.0 Final in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode for it.
Unpack with 7-Zip then simply overwrite the old flash files with those ones. Runs fine in Opera 9.64. Thanks for the security update head-up
Btw it's an NSIS installer and there is a problem with running the newest NSIS installers It would seem. See just above about foobar2000 for another example.

There are two reg files to create. One to enable the Windows NT version key, and the other to remove it after install.
Both ActiveX and Plugin Flash Player 10 will install correctly.
I have Flash Player 10.0.32.18 working correctly in both Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Firefox 3.5.1.
I'm using the current KernelEx 4.0 Final - needed for Flash Player 10 ActiveX.

Java 6 Update 14: How I've got it working in Windows 98SE with Internet Explorer and Firefox.
I have KernelEx 4.0 Final installed, but this proceedure may work with earlier versions too.
Download the Offline installer from: http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=31620
Run the Offline installer: jre-6u14-windows-i586-s.exe
This will fail with:
Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows
Installer package. A DLL required for this install to
complete could not be run. Contact your support
Personnel or package vendor.
This however has extracted the MSI installer into:
%windir%\Application Data\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_14
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to this folder (copy and paste the above line into the Address box).
Run jre1.6.0_14.msi
You will then receive the following message:
Thank you for choosing the Java( TM ) Platform. You may continue with this
installation, but for best results we recommend running on one of the following
operating systems: Windows XP Professional (SP2), Windows XP Home (SP2),
Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Professional (SP4+), and Windows Vista.
Click on Continue.
After install, the following setting must be disabled to ensure Java applets work.
In Control Panel, Java, Advanced, Java Plug-in, uncheck:
Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in (requires browser restart)
Now you should be operational with both Internet Explorer and Firefox, Opera, and others.

I've used several 802.11g devices before.
One was a Belkin (Ralink RT256x chipset) CardBus device.
Another was a Realtek RTL8185L chipset PCI device.
Both worked.
To use the latest Ralink drivers on the Belkin, I had to manually select a compatible driver since the INFs did not have the Belkin's CardBus ID.
Both Ralink and Realtek have support for Windows 9x.

There was a problem printing. The printer could not be found.
Print with printer turned off:
Print dialog - clicked on cancel.
Print with printer turned on:
Windows/mouse slower, slower, slower, hard lock.
Printing in other apps works okay.

Well, it looks like GoldWave 5.25 is the last version that works in Windows 9x...
The newer 5.5x versions fail to start with an Abnormal program termination error...
It's a shame really since 5.5x introduces some good plugins...

That private address space limit is inherent in Windows 32-bit design (although later NT OS's provide options to expand to 3GiB with tradeoffs).

I would recommend reading the entire Chapter 28 through if you have the time.
It helps give a better understanding of how and why Windows 9x does what it does.
Obviously some of this article does not apply to early versions of Windows 95, like WDM.
