I give up. I've uninstalled this pack now since I could not actually get it to load or save any Office 2007 files...
It uses MS XML 5 which I believe is incompatible with Windows 98SE...
Some say it works for loading Office 2007 files... I just could not get it to work...
BTW, it is interesting to note that Office 2007 Excel, PowerPoint, and Word files are actually PKZIP containers with a different file ending.
If they are renamed to a .zip ending then you can extract the .xml files inside - Cool aye?
Even after deinstalling I still have my Excel startup error...
All the Pack files are gone, so it must have modified some registry setting...
If anyone else has actually got this pack working, at least to load Office 2007 files, then please post how you did it!

Also, does DOS support channel symbol as *nix (VER | FIND/I "dos 7.10")?
...
Bankis, to answer your question: yes.
Many DOS commands and piping concepts are similar to Unix/Linux.
For Windows 98SE, you would use:
ver|find "4.10.2222""
The errorlevel return code is 0 for a match.
For example:
ver|find "4.10.2222"
if errorlevel 1 goto not_98se
[98SE stuff here]
goto finish
:not_98se
[Some message e.g. You need Windows 98SE to run this!]

soporific, what did you do to get the DirectX August 2007 install working?
I assume that you at least added the two missing 9x Cabs from December 2006 release.
I found that the DirectX updates released since 2006 (with the two Cabs added) do not seem to install additional Managed DirectX (.NET) files...
The same install on XP will copy quite a number of files that do not appear to copy on 9x...
My question is whether there is any gain to 9x by installing post-2006 DirectX updates?
If there is, then the November DirectX update is now available.

Just a backup in case the main list I constantly edit becomes corrupt.
Hey galahs, why don't you just keep your edit text in two local text files and update those.
Just edit your first two posts and copy all text to the local file.
Then you can edit it offline and just copy and paste it into the edit windows!
Might be worth a go...

Hi soporific, nice to hear October AP is rolling in!
I think you're right to do some extra testing this time round since including RP7 is a notable change in AP.
Have you considered re-including .NET Framework 2.0 - or more to the point, found a reliable slient install method?
I've had it installed since it was released by MS and have installed the updates 922481 (MS06-033 917283) and 922770 (MS06-056).
Currently I cannot get .NET 2.0 update 928365 (MS07-040 931212) to install though...
AP would be complete with .NET 2.0...
BTW, I assume that your .NET FW 1.1 includes Service Pack 1 867460 (885055)?
What about post 1.1 SP1 updates 925168 and 928366 (MS07-040 931212)?
I have these two Post 1.1 SP1 updates installed.

Must be something to do with IE6 (or what ever version it thinks its seeing from the register)!
Have uninstalled flash and reinstalled several times but still it does not work.
Will only take me to adobe site --redirect--??
Charlie
It does appear to be an IE6 problem.
I've accessed the toyota.com site okay in IE7 in Windows XP.
It also accesses fine in Firefox 2.0.0.8 in Windows 98SE.
All of these running Flash 9.0.47.0.

Okay,
For those who wanted this thread stickified, It's been done!
Thanks MDGx
See this stickified list thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=95815
galahs, I know I mentioned having a KernelEx section, but I think you're right about keeping it in the KernelEx thread.
Since KernelEx is an ongoing experiment and has certain side effects, it really is not suitable for a mainstream software list like this.
Thanks for all your work on this list!

Having a problem with the site TOYOTA.COM and Flash Player, after installing Auto Patcher...
I've just tried the same site and get the same message and redirect.
I had already installed the latest (9.0.47.0) Flash Player from Adobe before I installed the update of Auto-Patcher that has 9.0.47.0 of Flash Player.
charly, Could you get into the site before installing Auto-Patcher?

Re: your "out of Memory" errors, you will need to apply the "Environment Space Fix" --- have you already tried to apply this? It is available from the full main menu -- the option letter is "F" (for Friedrich Engels).
The "Out of memory" errors only happened with the MSPAINT update. Your in-script environment fix works fine for everything else...
Just not MSPAINT. I think this update needs a complete overhaul and update of some of the 'updated' files.
I did not want to make the CONFIG.SYS environment changes just for the MSPAINT update...
27 October Update: The MSPAINT update also puts a copy of MSPAINT.EXE in the root of C: with the name "Accessories" like the folder it's in...

Hi,
I've used versions of Skype from 2.0 up to current 3.5 in Windows 98SE.
Aside from video that is unstable, the only problems I had was when I used it on 56k dial-up.
Since I moved to DSL, I've had no issues unless I load up a large app at the same time as using Skype.
In this case, Windows 98SE's not-so-good multi-tasking makes the sound choppy for a moment.

I've installed the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack on Windows 98SE with Office XP.
Two problems:
Excel gives a startup error:
Run-Time error '49':
Bad DLL calling convention
It seems to work okay after pressing the 'End' button.
Outlook and the Outlook Control Panel applet crashes.
I don't use Outlook so I'm not sure if this was caused by the Pack or whether it's been like this for a while...
Other than that, it seems to work okay so far.
Oh, and I also installed the Sun ODF Plugin 1.1 for Microsoft Office although I have not really tested it yet...
Update 29 October:
It appears that the Outlook crash is related to Tihiy's Revolutions Pack 7. Tihiy is looking into it.
See this post.
Update 30 October:
Tihiy has fixed the Outlook crash problem in Revolutions Pack 7.

Has anyone tested Sun Java 1.6.0_03 on Windows 9x? (Yes, it does work)
The installer claims that it is best on a newer OS but does not claim it will not work!
I've been running it for about a week.
It appears faster and more stable than 1.5.0_13.
No problems so far with IE6 and Firefox...
Anyone else had experience with Java 6 on 9x?

Hey, everyone lets of steam now and then!
At least you've apologised in a noble fashion.
You're very spirited and probably good to have around as a contributor.
When I saw you edited out your 'rants', I also edited out the quotes of them...
There's no need to throw in the towel just because you perhaps upset a few people.
Afterall, we're all human here anyway.
Please re-consider "leaving" MSFN since the Windows 9x community needs all the support it can get since Microsoft have swept it under the digital carpet!
Just take a revised perspective on things and look at it from a constructive angle!

MDGx, nice to see you around again.
It's amazing how everything seems to slow down when you're not posting.
You must be the motivator as well as the moderator!
Good to see those 9x updates rolling on.

Microsoft will be supporting security updates on Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 until at least 13 July 2010 through Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 support.
See the MS Windows 2000 Pro Support Lifecycle page: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3071.
If you don't believe me then see the Notes box on the IE6 Support Lifecycle page: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=2073
Any webpage that takes you to a MS IE7 download page or says that it "requires" Windows XP or IE7 or whatever is just plain bad scripting and needs correcting!

Great work galahs on the category sections!
One suggestion though is that you put the last update date clearly at the top of the first two posts.
This way people can easily see when you last updated them!
I know that the last edit date/time is at the bottom of the post, but it would be so much clearer added to the top.
Also, I made a typo in my list (that I'll correct):
Symantec LiveUpdate 3.0.0.177 - current 3.0 - 3.1+ - free - ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_...3.0/lusetup.exeSymantec Event Library 11.6.8.1 - current 11 - 12+ - free - ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_...t11/sevinst.exe
It should have been (changes in red):
Symantec LiveUpdate 3.0.0.177 - current 3.0 - not 3.1+ - free - ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_...3.0/lusetup.exe
Symantec Event Library 11.6.8.1 - current 11 - not 12+ - free - ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_...t11/sevinst.exe
Can you correct your list too.
There's still some items in my list that would be good for others to see in your master list.
Another section you may want to add is software that only works with Xeno86's Kernel Update Project installed.
See Xeno86's thread for a growing list of software that works now with KernelEx.
The Kernel Update Project is still experimental so "use at your own risk" applies.
BTW, I had not thought of actually installing Sun Java 1.6.0_03... Seems to work without any problems! The installer only says that it is best on the listed OSs but not that it will not work on older ones...
That was also a very nice surprise for me!
Galahs, thank you warmly for excellent thread!
Hey rainyd, I'm still using Java 1.6.0_03 without any problems!
It actually seems faster than 1.5.0_13 that I had installed and now removed...
Sometimes one has to ignore the "must have" OS information on websites and actually try the software!
I've been using Skype right up to current version 3.5.0.239 without any problems.
I've even been able to get the video test window to work sometimes...
I use video Skype under Windows XP...
That sums up this excellent thread!
Let's pool all the information on all software that still works (or does not work) in Windows 98SE (or Windows Me for that matter).
To all software testers, tinkerers, tweakers, average joes, what do you know?

Once again, soporific, you have released a superlative update pack!
Some nice core updates.
The install since August 2007 release went mostly without a hitch...
I did however have two issues.
1. 98KRNLUP update looped - It ran okay when I manually ran the update after Auto-Patcher.
2. MSPAINT update had errors:
This update spawns it's own DOS session that does not benefit from your enviroment 'out of space' fix...
After Auto-Patcher, I ran msconfig to reduce startup environment variables, and ran MSPaint update without errors.
However...
It appears that this update has actually back-dated MS Paint and some of my filters...
MSPAINT.EXE - 5.00.1740.1 -> 5.00.1523.1
BMPMP32.FLT - 2000.10.02.0 -> 99120800
PCDIMP32.FLT - 2003.1100.5510 -> 98110900
PCXIMP32.FLT - 2000.10.02.0 -> 99120800
TGAIMP32.FLT - 2000.10.02.0 -> 96091600
TIFFIM32.FLT - 2000.10.25.0 -> 98112600
Aside from MSPAINT.EXE, the *.FLT files' dates mostly matched their versions.
I will probably restore these files from backup soon...

Even moderators need holidays!
That might explain why the latest unofficial 9x IE6 and OE6 updates haven't shown up?
They've probably already been compiled, but haven't been posted anywhere...
Afterall, MDGx is the updates collector man!

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME

Cool update MDGx. But...
I have your 98MP10 installed, and when I installed WMP9URP9X, it back-dated the following two files:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMDMLOG.DLL v10 > v9
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WMDMPS.DLL v10 > v9
Also it added v9 of WMPBAND.DLL into \WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
98MP10 installed v10 of WMPBAND.DLL into \Program Files\Windows Media Player.
I had to reinstall 98MP10 to update those two back-dated files...
