  1. @cluberti - I did come across your link earlier today in my frenetic search for some answers, & I began to get the sense that what I wanted to accomlish was not entirely suited to be done through Registry. Well, both your helps here are a tremendous boost for me - I'm not even a jr.admin (yet), but your analogy is perfect, crahak. As a "retired" health care professional, pursuing an obsession into a possible mid-life / next-life vocation, I totally agree, so I shall pursue my WMI/Powershell resource studies with a vengeance now. Man, this field can be so humbling - I'm accustomed to turning daily miracles in the realm of carbon-based flesh, but this silicon gated-logic arena makes me take a back row seat! Also, both your replies help me to begin to distinguish between these functions done by/in Registry, vs. functions accomplished @ other layers of the OS/machine. I really look forward to understanding these as Principles, then learning how they implement in other OS's (Linux/Mac).
  2. yippee ! @crahak - Thank You so much ! As MaxXP pointed out somewhere in their thread, this works immediately, no reboot required. I copied your script to a text file & named it SysRestore_Tweak.vbs. Next I enabled System Restore on several non-adjacent partitions, rebooted because I wasn't sure if it should be done just for completeness, then clicked to execute the .vbs script. Returned to System Restore applet & - only C:\ was enabled. Then I repeated the above w/o rebooting, and the results were the same success. Now - if it's not too much to ask, WHERE the heck in Reg is this working ? & ..... I'm currently beginning my study of J. Honeycutt's Windows Registry Guide ... what scripting books or website should I begin to study, in order to understand what this script says, and what it does ? I SOOPER appreciate this 'fish', and I want to learn to fish for myself also .... Thanks again, you've made my day & my evening (my fiance' Thanks you too) .
  3. ` Hi, some time ago a similar topic was posted at http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t52848.html and a pointer was given to a MSoft article, but I don't understand yet how to use WMI or the script that was given. So I'm asking a similar question again - Would anyone have either a .reg or standalone .vbs file idea, that would disable System Restore on all but the system partition, in my case C:\ ( XP Pro sp2+, yet, not screw up the ability to enable the other partitions through the GUI ? or the ability to disable the system partition through the GUI. I typically have partitions D through O set up, so if some patient, knowledgeable person would write out such a script idea - step by step, very clearly as to what each line means - b/c I'm a script beginner, I'd be super grateful ! It's annoying to check "Enable System Restore", then have the MSoft way of doing things automatically enable ALL !!!! partitions, then have to go back through a dozen+ partitions disabling them with checkbox after checkbox. Come to think of it, maybe tonite after dinner & cognac, I'll browse through Ray Chen's " The Old New Thing " , just to see if he has a funny explanation for one more MS_pita**, & how it just HAD to be done that way on the other hand, 2 clicks on a .reg / .vbs file & DONE would be SWEET !! Thank you for your time & Help ~
  4. Greetings, I detached my Quick Launch bar & set it to Autohide on the side of the screen (XP Pro). I use a registry tweak to speed up menu unfolding in the Start Menu & Favorites, ( HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\Menu_Show_Delay ), is there such a tweak to speed up the rate at which the Quick Launch or the Task Bar will hide / display again ? TrueLaunch Bar & its free version FreeLaunch Bar will do this, so there has to be some setting it's doing in the Registry. TIA for the helps
  5. I'm grateful to both for your responses - the firmest foundation of knowledge & skill is based upon confidence & clarity - preferably from other guides who know the landscape, yet can recall when they, too, were once beginners ..... uncertain of even the most apparently basic things
  6. How about here ? The official "nLite" guide, such as it is ........... http://www.nliteos.com/guides.html
  7. I've never done the slipstreaming before, surely from the 50 people who have viewed this post, someone would have the knowledge to answer my question? Thank You
  8. I plan a learning experience by a fresh nLite creation, slipstreaming SP3 to a XP_SP2 original disc. If I 'slipstream' WMP 11 & IE 7 according to the instruction on nLite website, will WMP 9/10/whatever & IE 6 be deleted/overwritten ? & if not, why not & how could I do that? because I would not see any valuable in having them installed. Many thanks for some guidances.
  9. Thank you very very much for your very clear, step-by-step, numbered instructions & directions. I shall do this experiments as you instruct before i post again. I teach my subjects (in health field) just like this, and i so much appreciate very clear instruction in return. Bless you and others for your assistance!
  10. ok, so if i go back to microsoft original "genuine xp" disc w/ sp2, ie6, wmp 9?, does slipstreaming the newer prog. versions overwrite the older ones automagically, or does that need done mechanically? thank you .
  11. Thank you for response - i did those removals the 2nd time through, upon reading that very guide you mention ! very nice to understand what is unnecessary to keep, what can be thrown away ! now my source .iso already have IE_7 & WMP_11 in it, so how can SP3 come 1st ? or, after i extract source .iso to workshop folder, do i need remove things before starting project ? thnks again for all helps ...
  12. Greetings & Thank you for this excellent progam - I am using nLite for a year now but w/ most basic skills, wish I knew how to understand to write script and such, but computers is hobby & not main job. but, does not even the most experienced computer peoples start with not understanding things? Today I integrate sp3 into XP_sp2 build that also have IE_7 & WMP_11 integrated to it, but upon install, the computer it displays IE_6 & WMP_9 !! Why this ? also, does sp3 slipstreaming w/ nLite basically delete or overwrite the sp2 components? i wonder, because my first try, the result come out to 725 MB !! so, for the veery 1st time, I make selections on the Options/General page, thinking to try ways to make everything smaller. Trying again, I also elect to delete more folders during the procedure, this time come out to 450 MB !! Thank you much for your helping !
