  1. I'm missing something. When did we switch to flash drives, and for what benefit? I mean, the last time I checked, A DVD was still cheaper and faster than a 4GB flash drive. (and handier if you only have a 1GB flash drive, too ) Kel Flash drives have reached 8GB - that would do for UAs. Malcolm
  2. Hello Dansouza! Same error message but different cause. IMHO,I believe the Code 4 error is an umbrella-type message that covers all-and-varied reasons for not booting. In my case although I normally have NERO 7.2.0.3b installed - more recently 7.8.5.0 - on this occasion, since it is an UA with only XP SP2 and the hotfixes and no major applications, NERO can not be a factor as it's not installed. BTW, I believe 7.8.5.0 is VISTA-ready. Cheers Malcolm
  3. Hi, Bolus! In the meantime since the last post I tried integrating Sound A driver pack from a link in this tutorial http://users.pandora.be/jtdoom/basetute/Eng_tut6b.htm So, now my new UA has SP2, the hotfixes and Sound A driver pack. It solved the audio problem. This was done with help from, initially, MSFN Forum and later from RyanVM.net as well. What I was really looking for when I first posted was just the theory of it, which you supplied. That is, why the sound drivers worked on an attended install but not on an unattended one: no doubt the "unattended" aspect blocked responding to the WHQL signing dialog box as you pointed out. Thanks, Bolus! Now I wonder if I'll be able to get some applications into the works!! Regards, Malcolm
  4. I'm lost if I try to use that guide, Bolus! Just the OEM CD - I integrated no drivers at all, just the hotfixes. Malcolm
  5. Today I finished my first UA with only the hotfixes integrated, no drivers or applications. All worked well except there is no sound. I realize that I never used any of the driver packs but my sound (Realtek AC '97) has never needed drivers to be added after an attended install, the setup CD must've had all that was necessary. What I don't understand is why an unattended install should be any different. All the drivers on the CD would've been included in the original source files folder when the whole CD was copied at the start. Would someone explain whether my situation is the usual scenario? I note that driverpack Sound A has Realtek AC'97: will this restore my sound? Kind regards, Malcolm
  6. Well, my UA worked beautifully this time! It was just the hotfixes integrated with my XPSP2 disc. Muchly appreciate the RyanVM update pack!! I will now venture into trying an UA with drivers & major apps. I, no doubt, will need help but I'll start a new topic - is that the right procedure? Thank you all so far! Malcolm

  8. The reason why my disc failed to boot was a problem with the hotfixes I added as shown in this thread http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...mp;#entry645690 Thanks everyone Malcolm
  9. At the moment, no add-ons - just the hotfixes. This is a follow-on from my last effort which was manually integrating each hotfix as per msfn forum method. If successful with the RVM method then I will most certainly be interested in add-ons for my drivers & applications. Thanks for your reply - I'm a bit slow at this as it is all quite new to me! Malcolm
  10. I've DLed RyanVMInteghrayor & the latest UpdatePack but haven't begun yet. I'm keen to see how it goes! Many thanks! Malcolm PS: I would like still to learn the manual method - can you point me to some help on this?
  11. Further progress!!! I may even get there in the end! Anyway, my unatt instlln worked OK right to the end so it looks like you were right andrew: it was the hotfixes. I tried to use the RyanVM approach to integrating them but his site for the update packs is undergoing maintenance at the moment. Would someone teach me how to use MSFN's automated way of using a batch file to integrate the hotfixes. I note that there is a prepared batch file in the Guide but I don't know how to use it. I realize that I'd still need to know which of the hotfixes are giving me the troubles even with this method but it'll allow me to learn something while awaiting the RyanVM site. Thanks! Malcolm
  12. Thanks lots! So, I guess it's worth doing then? Then I'd know that was OK & so could proceed to andrew's advice about the IE hotfixes, etc. Malcolm
  13. I don't have a source that is just XP without SP2. I guess I'd still be testing the effect of the absence of the hotfixes if I do an unattended install like this:- * copy whole CD to HDD * compose a WINNT.SIF file (it'd be a simple one, wouldn't it?) & place it in the i386 folder * burn the CD Would this show anything? I suppose I'd just be testing the answer file? Thanks! Malcolm
  14. Well, progress - I think! I created an unattended using UltraISO. This did give me a CD that booted OK. However, now a new problem: the unattended installation wouldn't complete. It copied files OK, gave me the partition/formatting page which I wanted (so now I'm using my backup cloned partition(!!!), loaded files OK and got to the startup screens going through the memory checks and detecting devices and the WindowsXP splash screen, does a restart & then gives an error message which was very hard to read as it was displayed very briefly. Then it was a loop situation - it'd reboot and come up with the error message again and was happy to keep doing this forever! It must've looped a dozen times or more as I needed many displays to be able to read the error message which follows here:- "Not enough virtual memory or paging file quota is available for the requested operation" or similar. So, re my next step: should I try the differences mentioned by blackmodder (about burning the boot CD mostly) or is there something more fundamental going wrong re memory?? KInd regards, Malcolm
  15. Thanks, Andrew! Yes, I am using Nero & I had done all the expert settings as you suggested. I'll give UltraISO a go. Oops! re the product key; thanks! Malcolm
