Today I finished my first UA with only the hotfixes integrated, no drivers or applications.

All worked well except there is no sound.

I realize that I never used any of the driver packs but my sound (Realtek AC '97) has never needed drivers to be added after an attended install, the setup CD must've had all that was necessary.

What I don't understand is why an unattended install should be any different. All the drivers on the CD would've been included in the original source files folder when the whole CD was copied at the start.

Would someone explain whether my situation is the usual scenario? I note that driverpack Sound A has Realtek AC'97: will this restore my sound?

I think your problem occurs because the Realtek drivers aren't WHQL certified. In normal procedure you click "ignore", but during Unattended install it refuses to install the driver. I am not sure how you made the unattended cd. Did you integrate drivers yourself or did you use the oem cd?

Just the OEM CD - I integrated no drivers at all, just the hotfixes.

Hmm allright. I think you have two choices. 1. Make a new DvD form scratch in which you manually add all drivers/apps/tweaks/etc. Check out the unattended guide for that: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ or 2. Use your OEM cd and install Realtek driver afterwards.

In the meantime since the last post I tried integrating Sound A driver pack from a link in this tutorial

So, now my new UA has SP2, the hotfixes and Sound A driver pack. It solved the audio problem. This was done with help from, initially, MSFN Forum and later from RyanVM.net as well.

What I was really looking for when I first posted was just the theory of it, which you supplied. That is, why the sound drivers worked on an attended install but not on an unattended one: no doubt the "unattended" aspect blocked responding to the WHQL signing dialog box as you pointed out.
