  1. Thanks Ghostrider - I'll have a look at the links.

I do think it's a local copy and not on any server. I will have to double check.

Our IT guy is coming in tomorrow to run scans and repairs or something. He says I have a 5% chance of retrieving anything. He says all the mail is stored as data into one folder. But this data has been corrupted now, and because I can't "rebuild it" I most likely won't be able to fix it.

I just don't understand - 1 min it's all OK and the next minute I've got an error message and my application is stuffed.

    Sigh

    Jules

I feel for you... any data can become corrupted so my motto is always Backup, Backup and Backup again. The Mvps.org might be the best place to visit. (copy the mail folder before attempting any recovery)

  2. I haven't used Entourage so I don't know if you have a local copy or logging into exchange which would mean the email would still be on the server.... try these links they may have some helpful info..

This one might have more precise info about your problem

Another interesting thing I read is that you

can include WINNT.SIF in a diskette to run unattended inst, or remove diskette to

leave it in manual inst). Thanks

PS: Lost a whole night with this issue, and I'm an advanced user...

I'm not being nasty, but i would say your not a novice.... if you were advanced you would already know the limitations ;)

  4. Your right you did include the router, i missed it.. and i re iterate i see you setup port triggering, it should be port forwarding. The picture you supplied does not show the ip of the local computer and you only need to forward port 5900, 5800 is not required unless you want to use java

  5. would be useful to know what VNC program you are using. i personally use UltraVNC and it works like a charm.

Im sorry I did forgte to mention That I am using Realvnc, hope this helps, it would be useful to have it working as then I can leave my pc running and stuff, but stil have accsess to my documents and things

Which router are you using....? In any case you should use port forwarding and setup 5900 to point to your internal ip address. Your computer must always have this IP or VNC will fail.

P.S I think your currently using the wrong router settings and you should use UltraVNC, it's the best of the bunch.

  6. I deal with this one all the time as a technical consultant... The cheapest, recommended and easiest answer

(as all the tools are already provided) for dynamic IP internet connection is to setup a dyndns account ie. (work.dyndns.gotdns.com) setup your router to forward port 3389 to your workstation IP, which of course has access to your files on the server and access the network that way.

SBS 2003 only has Admin access via Terminal services so although the connection is encrypted your still accessing from a family PC to a fully Admin accessible server (not good)

If VPN is a consideration then VPN access is easiest via a higher end SOHO router with provided client software but is more expensive and harder to setup. if you want other VPN options then buy 2 VPN routers, 1 at work and 1 at home and setup a permanent tunnel from home, just make sure your IP ranges are different at each end ie. 192.168.0.1-254 and 192.168.10.1-254

  7. I have a friend who I am attempting to convert from AOL, however he loves (I don’t know why) their email setup, there is one feature that he cannot live without... He loves that after an email has been read and his inbox is closed the emails move to a different folder. Does anyone know of any pop3 clients that do this, perhaps an extension to Mozilla Thunderbird or Outlook 2003?

Try Pegasus email www.pmail.com and it's free...

  8. I started a computer business almost two years ago from my home. I am 26 and have only been in the computer field for about 3 maybe 4 years. Most of my business revolves around removal of viri and malware, but I also custom build. I have a few clients that are friends of my grandparents and dont know to much about computers other then how to turn it on and start chatting in an IM program. I used to use Remote Desktop to connect at night and update programs and make sure everything is ok. How would I go about getting an email with all updated IPs from these computers so as I dont have to go over there or call and ask them to go to whatismyip.com and read me out their IP? Thank you in advance!!!

    Nick~

Consider a free account with Dyndns.org you can setup multiple domain names under the one account so you dont need to send emails, just login to grandad.gotdns.com or whatever you choose, use the free client to run on the workstations or setup DDNS in the router

  9. I am working for a company that deploys about a dozen workstations in a workgroup (peer-to-peer network). The workstations run Win XP. We have a DSL Internet connection, and a Cisco router that serves as the DHCP controller. The DNS is outside our firewall.

We employ one software application that users access via our LAN - a customer service database application. In order for the application to succeed we are required to map a drive on the "server", i.e. the machine that is running the application and maintaining the tables. This server is not a Domain Controller - we have none, and we are not running Active Directory.

We are experiencing connectivity issues with this application: we are unable to establish our full complement of licensed connections (11) and on occasion are also unable to open / view the mapped drive from a particular machine.

    <snipped>

I noticed you said Server but running in a Peer to Peer config, are you running a true server or using XP Pro as a fileserver, if so then you can only have 10 network connections and therefore will need true server, the other problem might relate to true server being setup for per server licensing which mean total connections, not users.. Just a thought...!

  10. I'd leave it as a workgroup server and not a domain controller, but it shut down every few hours and complains about violating the EULA. My server always complains about the router and then I have trouble getting by the "Configure" DHCP scopes when the wizard comes up. I also want to learn the RIS stuff and in that case it has to be a domain controller and have AD installed. I'd let it be the DHCP server, but I have a customer in the offices next to me tapped into my internet and I need to keep the internet going 24/7 for them and occasionally my server is down.

You should make sure you setup as a Domain controller, with domain name as example.local. SBS 2003 is an excellent choice. Remove/disable 1 of the NICs and use only 1. you can re-enable later when/if you install ISA. Set a static IP address and if you still need the router then disable Server DHCP and reserve the Server ip address or use one outside the router DHCP range. The server will be the primary DNS controller, make sure it points to itself for DNS settings and you can use the router ip as secondary DNS. Set the router as the gateway then make sure all workstations have the Server ip address as the DNS Server. Enable/disable exchange as required during the wizard setup and you should have internet for all computers.

As for Admin... NEVER give users admin status on the server, if they need admin privilages to work on the workstation then join the domain, reboot, login to local machine with administrator account then go to user accounts and add new user, add the domain login name then add server domain name (don't browse) click next then select administrator then reboot and login to the domain you should still have admin status on the workstation but user on the server.

  11. Microsoft software sucks.

Your opinion. Personally I think Microsoft products are just fine, but use the best tool for the task at hand - if Linux or Unix are better tools for you, I suggest you use those tools. Again, best of luck to you.

I agree that each to their own.... I do actually like Server 2003 and even better the SBS version and find they work very well, However, my problem has always been the internet connection. DSL is not made for VPN, you need T1 or Fibre, a good Wireless connection is better than DSL, (even cable works better  ) We would all be interested to know what the actual cause turns out to be... best of luck in finding it...

  12. I know this is a little simplistic an answer but having tried to work within the confines of customers budgets and trying to use VPN across DSL connections i can now categoricaly say... YOU SHOULDN'T DO IT... it sucks... Bell Canada have also recently (quietly) admitted that there are serious issues with VPN across DSL and on lesser routers your connection will drop, you have a good router so it keeps the connection but i believe througput will be very bad. as mentioned earlier i would try other alternate options, even 802 wireless, 1 of my clients is working this way when DSL failed...

  13. I have created a Server 2003 CD with SP1 and the drivers. The issue is the drives are Raid. How do I make it load the Raid drivers in the beginning. If I do a manula install you hit F2 and have the drivers on a floppy. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Easiest way is to use nlite and integrate the raid textmode driver at the same time you create the slipstrewamed SP1 then boot from cd to install.

  14. Thanks Ghostrider. :) This is exactly what I am trying to do with my programs. I want to make everything 100% Unattended in the creation of multiboot disks. ;)

In the near future the RVMIntegrator and Windows XP PowerPacker will have features that will help link them together without the need of many batch files. The RVMIntegrator will be able to call an external program (Windows XP PowerPacker or any other program) with any specified switches. It will run it after it finishes integration. This way it will be as simple as making your ini file and having Windows XP PowerPacker called from within the integrator. Windows XP PowerPacker will also have the capability of calling external programs as well. I plan to have an option to save your ini file into any specified name. And give the option to load a different ini file as well.

I also want to work on having PowerPacker automatically edit the BTS cmd file to make it unattended and hide the cmd windows. I also want to make sure the hex editing portions are completely hidden as well... to help keep the windows popups away during packing.

Well thank you for creating the programs..i was looking for something to do this kind of thing as i spent quite some time integrating, slipstreaming DP's and then creating a multiboot (all manually :( ) this is about as quick and as automatic as i can make it right now... i look forward to the new incarnations... :thumbup
