  1. Well, I resolved this issue so I thought I would share it with others just in case: The RAID array was failing because of a bad drive. There were no warnings in the event viewer that the drive was failing, but every time I would reboot the array would need to be reactivated and resynchronized. After a reboot yesterday, one of the drives was missing, and I was never able to get it back up afterward. I connected up my spare drive in place of the missing one and repaired the array with it. After that sync finished, it remained healthy with no hiccups. Fortunately for me, the failed drive still has one month left on the three year manufacturer warranty, so I just sent it out for an RMA replacement/upgrade. The Blocked Access turned out to be the fault of my RRAS server. About two years ago I was using RRAS for VPN access while I was away from my home, but shortly afterward I moved the VPN endpoint to my router. I have had RRAS disabled since, but somehow or another after the power outage RRAS was turned back on. I'm baffled as to how it turned on, but it disabled the Windows Firewall and blocked access to everything I had already allowed since it had never been configured in the first place. Strange, but after disabling it once more and turning back on the Windows Firewall everything went back to normal.
  2. Hello all, I have a server that I use for basic data hosting purposes giving me a headache. The server isn't used for much else, really. The box is running Server 03', and is completely up to date. No software is running on the machine, and the data is on a virtual RAID 5 array. Two days ago my power went out, and despite the server having been on a battery backup/surge protector, I seem to be having a couple issues now that I have it back up and running. Anyway, the problems are: 1. All incoming access is being blocked. 2. My RAID 5 array is failing every reboot. Blocked Access: My main problem. From the server, I can access the internet, ping everything on my LAN, and access all local resources (printers, routers, etc). However, nothing can access the server. I cannot ping it, I cannot access the share drives, I cannot access temp websites running on it, etc, etc, etc. All services are up and running just fine, and I don't have a 3rd party software firewall on or any other anti-virus apps running. Everything had been running smoothly (for two years) prior to this power outage. Now, nothing appears to be working. RAID 5 Array: This is less a problem and more of a question. I'm not sure why the array is failing, but I can reactivate it just fine after the server boots up. While trouble shooting, I haven't had the server up long enough to synchronize all the drives (1TB Data), so I was thinking if I let it finish synchronizing then it would be fine after a reboot. Am I wrong about that? I cannot say I have much experience with software RAID arrays, and the disks appear to be just fine. Any ideas or suggestions?
  3. First time for everything... Alright, so one of our end users has been having some issues saving Word documents (though other office products might also be suffering the same fate), where certain files -- saved files -- are opened, edited, and then lost after attempting to save the file. Initially I assumed the user was deleting the files somehow since he couldn't give me an example (intermittent error), so I kept the issue open and monitored his machine in the situation it happens again. Well, it did. What happens is he has an existing file, say "Trumpets 2008.doc", and opens it for editing. After writing a page or two he hits the save button, but receives an error that the he does not have access to the file. He then has the option to either change the file name and save it (which WORKS), or click cancel, which then forces Word to unexpectedly shut down and remove (somehow) the original file and in some cases the temp file for auto-recovery. If this isn't strange enough, the original document is nowhere to be seen at the time of saving, and the error claims that your file is named ~wf123.tmp*, but despite this you cannot save using the original document name until after everything is closed. For the time being I have him renaming the file as me makes changes, and then making occasional backups. Before I troubleshoot this extensively on his PC though, I figured I would do some research. Turns out hundreds of people have had this same issue in one manner or another, but I have found no resolutions as of yet. I also did a quick search here but found no similar threads (sorry if I overlooked one). I prefer not wasting his time with useless troubleshooting and figure out the actual reason this stuff happens, so I do not plan to uninstall/reinstall until I am out of options. Some (likely) unimportant details: While the problem is intermittent, the majority of times this happens is when he is accessing files on our network shares. While that is likely just because he works off the network more often than off his PC, I thought I would mention it. He is using XP Pro SP3, and Word 2003 with all updates. No recent changes have been made to the PC and he has full Administrative privileges to his PC. Same applies to the network share he is accessing. Machine itself is in fine working condition. Problem does not appear to have any sort of pattern, as it happens at random times with random files (size, location, etc). According to all other threads on this issue, it isn't a hardware issue and it isn't a user error.
  4. Thanks guys. I had used a Wireless Router with DD-WRT for my ghost casting purposes. We are definitely due for an upgrade and we will be forking out the money. As of right now our entire second floor has its cabling coming in at one place, and we plan to have all of that on a separate switch. I think we will be ok once we get to that point. My main concern was the second DHCP server not causing any problems. Thanks!
  5. I have a domain setup with about 50 Network Printers (I know, ridiculous), addresses 1-30 filled from Routers/Switches/Servers, about 80 or so PC's, 30-50 Laptops, a VPN Server w/ 20 Addresses in its Pool, and some other various networking devices strewn about. My problem now is that with our occasional Ghostcast sessions to setup our new PC's, Guests on our wireless, and more and more devices coming in -- we have just about run out of addresses so we want to tack on more. I was wondering what the BEST approach to this would be (how to do it would be nice), and any other input. For a temporary solution I configured another router with a static address to our internal network, and then used the routers DHCP to assign a new subnet to a different switch. This is allowing 20 or so PC's to work off a separate subnet while maintaining communication with both the net and the Domain. I was a little worried the DHCP "server" on the router would knock down our other DHCP server, but I guess since it's one hardware and one software they coexist w/out problems? idk; I never really had to spend much time in this arena, but would like to know. Thanks, ~Brennen
  6. Dang, that sounds cool. When I have more time i will look into more of this stuff. I have played around with some of the commands and such that I have from their index page -- but there is only so much I can "test" on my own computer logging in and logging out etc without losing my sanity. Oh, is there a way to test run KiX scripts without actually logging in / out. I figure there is...but I get an error whenever I try. Never pursued it much past there.
  7. Awesome, thanks!! I think this will be very useful for anyone who needs a basic kick start (pun...KiXtart..?) to use some functions and want to get a gist of how to use a login script. Since I started I have made a much more detailed script, and in turn found I can cancel many of the functions out and use GP -- but I love scripting, so with this I am sure I will touch some new ground. Thanks again!!
  8. lol. The primary reason is simply so that they have access to all their local resources. Since we have so many salesmen come and go, along with programs getting uninstalled/reinstalled, etc. -- giving them local admin access just seems to be the simplest solution. I mean without restricting them to something they would potentially I don't see how I could give them any other amount of permissions. Which is why I would like to be able to control everything from Active Directory -- but with 400+ users that seems kind of hairy. Unless you have some better suggestions (which I'm sure you guys do.) -- I mean, as I have stated -- I practically still a kid,; I am doing my best to to my best, but if I have no idea what I am overlooking I cannot do any better.
  9. Ooooookie Doke. I will just clean things up on our DC and then let it be. I am sure you are all right, my PDC probably is just a little on the messy side ----- and, this may be 2000 server I am thinking of, but I thought there was a registry change that needed to be made for it to be the Time Server. (Yes, I am sure the logon script works, we created all the users as "local administrators" to their PC alone** -- so when they login their time snaps back into place.) **Which is brings up a question of its own. I want to semi-automate the process of adding a new user to a PC while giving their account local administrator access without domain admin access -- or access to other PC's admin shares. I have a tendency to under/over think a process, but I feel like this is a paradox. I cannot seem to do this without giving everyone --- more or less --- Domain Admin privileges.
  10. Sweet thanks! Now if only I can get these things in order!
  11. I currently have kix32 running the SETTIME to the Server running it. I really need to backpedal this though because I know that it's not a very good procedure. I was under the same impression -- that it should automatically sync, but I have beeing seeing more and more of our PC's fail to check in or login or what have you due to incorrect time. But I have only seen this problem on our local PC's. Which is why I have it (kix, during login) check for a group that is specific to our local users/computers and then run the SETTIME command. This is working just fine for all of our local guys -- and I cannot really say if there are any problems with our outlying one, but for thorough and proper administration I wanted to have this controlled without my crappy script.
  12. Hello Again I feel like this is the millionth topic I have posted this month, but whatever. My question should be simple enough. [Question: Need to Push Time] I have Server 2003 / Active Directory going, and we have our network split up across America. Needless to say we have PC's checking in from multiple time zones, but I need them to all be on the correct time in accordance to their time zone. Obviously there are many advantages to maintaining the same date and time on all PC's, and I realize this is a very simple procedure I am sure -- and up until now I have simply had my logon script check groups and set the date and time accordingly. Though it works for our local PC's, this process doesn't do anything to our outlying sites. I figure I could set a policy per OU, and each OU containing the appropriate users/computers with its corresponding Tim Zone...but sadly when I started at my company a few months back there were no OU's setup aside from the defaults -- which contain about 400 users I have yet to make THOSE changes, so that is not yet an option... kthnxbye
  13. Alright. Here's the deal, I added all my tweaks from over the years and compared with most of these and got some tweaks from you guys to add, so thanks! But, I have added a few custom apps to my shell menus (Right-Click on My Computer, and Right-Click on Typical Folders). These additions I cannot imagine would be useful to anyone else, however -- I was wondering if: 1. Anyone knows how to change the name that displays on the Menu (Ex: I add the Command Prompt, and I want it to say "CMD" instead of "Open Command Line Here...") 2. Anyone knows how to change the order in which menu items appear (Ex: I have 4 options, Open / Command Line Here / Manage / Explore -- I want "Open" at the top, then "Explore" below it, then "Manage" below that, and lastly "Command Line Here" at the bottom of the top portion of the Menu) *does that make sense??* kthnxbye
  14. Honestly, I wasn't quite sure what you meant. So I used one of my port sniffers (York) that works as Network Trace software to essentially do what you requested. (i believe). My results from both ends show queries from eachother suchas: COMPUTERNAME(client) <-> COMPUTERNAME(host) Shared Network Folder 896 Byte COMPUTERNAME(host) <-> COMPUTERNAME(client) Shared Network Folder 896 Byte Where COMPUTERNAME is the name of the Domain Workstation -- client / host being the problem computer and the computer accessing it. Shared Network Folder is the Query type I am given (like DHCP/Telnet/ICMP), and the Byte number I am only assuming is the packet size for the data being sent/received?? With some honestly strange results that frankly mean nothing to me as I am undereducated when it comes to subnet masking: computername.domain.local <-> 224.0.0.251 Shared Network Folder 1392 Byte From here I personally do not no where to move. But hopefully someone else can decipher this?
