  1. This may have been reported before, but I didn't see it searching MSFN, so here goes. If this is a dupe, fo ahead and remove it, mods.

So! Apple has this great new product called the iRack. Try saying it out loud. See this hilarious video about what it is and what happens. Best viewed with other people, and without food in your mouth. I was rolling on the floor when I saw this. :w00t: Not for supporters of the iRack - i mean Iraq  - war.

    Hee hee! Enjoy! :hello:

  2. So I have a Dell laptop with a built in (as in in the side next to the usb ports) 5-in-1 media card reader, for SD cards and the like.

For the first time since I got it in december, I decided to try and stick in my SD card. Nothing happened. I tried again. It was in the right direction, it was snug and all that. I don't have any other media types to try, sorry. Here's the info:

    --Computer--

    Intel Core Duo :)

    1gb RAM

    CD/DVD reader/writer

    Built in wireless

    4 usb ports

15.4 inch widescreen LCD and a VGA port on back with nothing connected :(

Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP2

    All windows updates, etc. applied

    A non-functional 5-in-1 media reader :(

    --The memory cards--

    Three:

    512 mb Lexar SD cards

    One:

    128 mb Lexar SD card

    --What the Device manager says--

    post-128497-1175995507_thumb.png

So here's what I expect is the deal: there's no driver for SD cards, or else not for this brand of SD card. Does anyone have any other ideas? I guess I'll go looking on the Lexar website for drivers, but in the mean time, anyone have an idea what's going on?

    Thanks in advance!

  3. Don't think the cd still is around... it may have never existed, actually.

The machine's an ancient Compaq and had windows 98 pre-installed.

Could I find the necessary file for upload on the computer somewhere (like C:/windows) and copy it over here and upload it?

I will look for a CD, but I doubt I have one.

  4. Pardon my ignorance. :blushing:

What file do I need to find? Any old version of systray.exe that's before 4.10.2224?

What do I do when I find that file? I would greatly appreciate it if someone made a windows 98 fe package or something, and I'll get that file for oyu but I need to know what file...

Again, I'm sorry for the hassle.

  5. Yes/no.

Not if you just put the .ppt or .pps file on a cd. But what version of powerpoint do you have? In PowerPoint 2003, and possibly XP and 2007, there is a presentation cd feature. Open the presentation you want to put on the CD. Click file > package for cd. It will let you choose options including whether or not to add other presentations, add any linked files (like other ppts or pdf or videos or whatever), etc. It will also include a copy of the powerpoint viewer. You will be able to open the powerpoint (but not edit it in any way) from any PC with windows 98se (i think) or later. I have verified that it works on Windows 2000 and XP, but I don't know about vista.

This WILL NOT work on a mac. I highly advise against using the same presentation on macs and pcs, or between different versions even. Big problems surface, trust me. You may want to look into converting the final presentation to a .avi or better yet a flash video. That way you could play it with any media player or with flash player.

    Good luck! :hello:

  6. Does this work with Windows 98 NOT second edition?

If you use Windows 98 NOT second edition you must replace systray.exe 4.10.2224 with older version.

What? Sorry, maybe I didn't explain well. I want to be able to use USB storage devices, like a flash drive, on Windows 98, non second edition. The info on the first page said they were for window 98 se. Are there any usb drivers for windows 98 regular is my question.

  7. What's he/she using it for?

Windows XP home is fine for most home uses like email and web browsing and some word processing and stuff.

Windows XP Media Center is the best choice I say because it's built on XP Professional, so you get most of the XP Pro features. It also comes with all the media stuff.

Windows XP Professional if you need to connect to a domain, etc. This is essentially the only XP Pro feature left out of media center edition.

I don't know if you can still get XP Media Center. What OS is currently on the computer? I know you can still get XP Home and XP Pro.

  8. @Idontwantspam, I have no such issues with VirtualBox. What happens on one PC may not necessarily occur on another. :hello:

OK, true, I just think people should be careful. Glad to hear there were no problems for you.

  9. Nnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why why why would they do this? I've been waiting for SP3 for a long time. How can they do this to me? I am NOT going to vista, so if they refuse to support windows xp, I'll say to h*** with them and start using linux.

Actually, all this panic may be unnecessary. On their life cycle page they say windows xp media center, which i use, will be supported until 2009. Surely there will be a service pack in the next two years? After that... well, I guess I may be using it for a bit longer than they support it.

    :realmad: :angrym: :( :(

  10. Can i upgrade to any other OS other then linux for free at all?

    No, but kinda maybe yes.

I know of no other FREE operating system. But if you go to a college, you may be able to get Windows XP from them for free or very little. If you are a US government employee, you can potentially get windows through your agency. They have a deal with microsoft. If you live in certain "third world" countries, you can get Windows XP Starter edition for very little money, but it's ridiculously watered down. Or you can get linux. It's not really that bad. I've used it some, never extensively, but as I said, I'm working on changing that. No other ways to a free upgrade I assume. Unless you pirate, but that's a big no-no. I advise against it.

But think about it this way. How much does windows xp home cost? A $99 upgrade. How much do you use your computer? When you look at cost per hour of computer use, it's not as expensive as it seems. Of course, I'm not rushing to buy anything expensive, so I'm being hypocritical again, but it's a thought. If you can't, I understand. So ask your employer or school or something if you can get windows xp or even windows 2000 would be better. But don't get vista. Ugh.

  11. Or you if you can't afford a new operating system, GET a new operating system. By that I don't mean pirate, I mean get Linux. Free, no DRM, open source. Granted, I'm being a hypocrite - I use Windows XP not linux (thought that may soon change!) But seriously, a machine that doesn't work with Windows ME (and what machine does?? ) will work considerably better with Linux - I've seen it happen. Faster, less buggy, no BSODs ever. Just an idea.

  12. I have a similar issue. I have a SanDisk U3 Cruzer Micro, 512 mb. I want to be able to use it on an ancient Windows 98 machine in our house, but I can't because there aren't any drivers. The driver mentioned here - would it work with Windows 98 NOT second edition? If so, I'll try that, otherwise, does anyone know where I can find USB drivers for Windows 98 for the mentioned device, or better yet, all USB devices? Thanks in advance.

  13. What OS are you on? If you're on Windows XP (as the host) DO NOT USE VIRTUAL BOX!!!

For me it killed the USB ports and gave me a BSOD. I advise you find more info or don't use it.

  14. WARNING!

Do not use Virtual Box (not to be confused with Virtual PC) if you have Windows XP. I got a bluescreen when I tried, and it screwed up my USB devices (see this post: here). If anyone knows more info, please post in the post mentioned above, but I highly recommend you don't use Virtual Box until more is found out. Virtual PC works fine, but it's Microsoft, and so it should work with microsoft software.

  15. Solved!

It was, indeed, VirtualBox causing the problem. After hunting around on the Virtual Box website, I found the following info:

If VirtualBox messes up your USB stack on Windows and you can no longer work with your USB devices, try removing VBoxUSBFlt from LowerFilters of the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}. At this time, we do not know what causes this problem and we have only had very few reports so this is just in case.

Well, here's another case for them, then

I'm not sure why this happened. It seems it was the issue with it not installing right. Now the issue is fixed, yay! :)

If anyone else has an issue like this, I recommend you visit this webpage:

    http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/User_FAQ

I'm glad I solved this, sorry for wasting anyone's time. Hopefully this will be useful to someone else some day!

  16. sorry to bump an old thread, but I was just wondering if gpedit.msc was available in xp home

No, it's not. But you can still edit most policies through the registry editor. I've tried it on an XP home computer. Some parent got ticked off at their kid for always locking the computer as they didn't know his password or have any clue how to unlock it. Now that user can't lock the computer, thanks to

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System!DisableLockWorkstation

  17. I am putting this in the Windows XP forum because it's on a machine with Windows XP. If it should be moved, please let me know. All of the USB ports are out on my laptop. It is not a hardware issue, Dell Diagnostics confirms that - my USB key lights up and is fine, and the diagnostics utility says they're fine. However the device manager says that the drivers are not working - that there's a problem with the drivers. I looked into this, and apparently this is maybe part of the issue:

Driver details for all of the 5 drivers shown (there are only 4 usb ports, so this makes no sense). All the driver details show several microsoft-signed drivers and a non-signed driver in the following location:

    C:/WINDOWS/System32/DRIVERS/VBoxUSBFlt.sys

I researched this driver and found that it is a USB driver for Virtual Box. I attempted to install Virtual Box on about April 2nd or 3rd. It didn't work - the computer did a BSOD on me. I don't remember the error code. So anyhow, after I rebooted following the BSOD, I went and looked and apparently nothing had been installed - there were no Virtual Box related folders in Program Files, it didn't show up in Add or Remove program files in the control panel. It appeared that nothing was done. But, there is this driver on the computer that might be part of the problem. I am fairly sure it is from Virtual Box. I have since installed MS virtual PC. I do not think it is related to that. Now since Virtual Box was never installed, I can't uninstall any components - like this rogue driver.

    Other possible causes/relevant info:

I first noticed this the 4th. I hadn't used anything USB since about the 1st or March 30th about.

There have been microsoft updates since I last used USB, and they may be related. A patch for the .ani bug was released on Tuesday, out of cycle, and has reportedly broken some things elsewhere. I don't think this is related but it could be.

    Here is the system info:

Type: Dell Inspiron E1505, about 4 months old

OS: GENUINE Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP2

    Processor: Intel Core Duo

    RAM: 1gb

    Hard drive: about 60gb

4 USB connectors, none of which work :(

Anything else you need to know?

I have seen on other (inferior to MSFN ;) ) boards talk of this happening. It seems to be happening mostly to Dells. Any clues what might be going on? This is a big problem for me, as I use USB devices a lot. Camera and memory key, mostly, which I use very frequently. I am considering maybe trying to install Virtual Box again, and if it works, uninstalling it to maybe remove the said driver. Any suggestions on what the heck I can do?

Here a re couple of screenshots, one of the device manager and one of the details for one of the drivers.

  18. Two funny nerd jokes, both true stories changed to be funnier, based on what a friend of mine said about a day at school recently.

The first "nerdy" event happened in P.E.

They were playing volleyball. The person with the ball walked up to the nerd and said "Do you want to be the server?" The nerd replied "Who me? No way! I'm a workstation, not a server!" The other kid looked at him with a blank stare. "huh?" "Oh, never mind," said the nerd. "No, I don't want to."

Later that day in math class, the teacher was talking and said "Now, open your books and turn to page 404." The (same) nerd, without even opening his book, replied "I can't find it!". The teacher didn't understand, "Just turn to page 404! It's there... the one after page 403!" The nerd quickly responded "but I'm not allowed to go to page 403!" The teacher, getting mad, was about to come over and show the student where the page was. "never mind, here it is," he said, rolling his eyes.

OK, that's it, any other nerdy stories are welcome!
